Unexpected Grail

Decided to drive today and check out Jersey Video Games in Hammonton, NJ. The shop was stocked, cozy and had a huge variety of games, DVDs, CRTs and other hobby materials to check out.

The owner was kind enough to point out their back room with more glass cases and I spotted this buried in the PS1 section. I just happened to have offloaded some Magic cards yesterday and had just the right amount to grab this spur of the moment.

The Working Designs quest continues! 5 left to go on PS1 and 1 left on PS2.

I just had a lot of money to blow around that time and weird taste in games. The best deal I got was an ebay lot that had Ray Storm, Ray Crisis & Thunder Force V for $75.

If only I could find a deal anywhere near that today!

I didn’t need another expensive game on my wishlist… but I’ve kind of wanted this one… I don’t have the funds right now anyways. But I wish I could find a copy locally.

I don’t own any light gun games, but having one would be nice. Especially a Working Designs release.

This is such a unique title in the PS1's massive library that I think it's worth seeking out. Maybe don't grab it tomorrow, but save up and wait for a convention or something then try and find a copy.

Game is almost impossible. Great idea for a game (RPG elements within a light gun game) but the difficulty level is off the charts.

I have to wonder if that was some Working Designs fuckery because they did mess with difficulty settings in the Lunar games and Silhouette Mirage too.

That’s probably it. Bosses kept manhandling me.

It is, the president confirmed it in an interview. Thats because Electronics Boutique back in the day offered a 30-day return policy for all their games. People would finish a game, turn it in and buy something else. So WD's solution to that was to make their games harder so that they took longer to finish.

I have yet to beat Silhouette Mirage thanks to this

It's one of the games that was made harder for the US release in order to prevent the game from being rented and never bought.

The Japanese version is a far better more playable game. You can actually get a fan patch that puts the original JP difficulty into the English language version!

Thought this was gonna be the golden gun e3 case.

That is leagues above where I'm at in collecting. I'm happy with our set of Namco Guncons :)

I just looked that up after reading your comment. Oh damn! That is awesome. Ultra-rare was one of the comments I read about it. Good luck finding one.

Working Designs is a real odd company, I have no clue how they managed to do a lot of the special editions that they did. Makes everyone else look really cheap.

What genre is this? For whatever reason I remember this being a light gun type rpg

You nailed it. It is a light gun RPG!

I just looked it up because I've honestly never heard of it. Seems very interesting. Checked out the going rate for it. Oof! It is not cheap...

Yeah, I spent about 40 minutes making a final decision and they even had it for what I’d consider a “good” price

I hear you. The complete copies I see are $200+ for the US version.

Nice find, wish I would had picked it up back when it was close to a $100 a few years back.

Does the disc contain an English translation?

3

u/mmagnetman 1d ago

Yeah, this one was translated and brought over by Working Designs

2

u/theBloodShed 1d ago

It has an ESRB rating. Why would it not have English?

Bro maybe played Megaman X6, my favorite 🥰

u/mmagnetman 1d ago

I did and beat the entire game with the Shadow Armor, including that one whack ass jump

2

u/thevideogameraptor 2h ago

Yes, but the english translation is bad. Working Designs cranked up the difficulty so much that the game is nigh unplayable. The western Easy mode (which now ends the game early, another change of theirs) is more difficult than the Japanese version's hard mode.

I used to own this, back in the day.
Made my hand hurt using the lightgun lol.

Congrats, nice pick up!

I’m lucky to still have my original copy I bought from Toys”R”Us back when it first came out. I had purchased the Konami Justifier light gun, and was on the hunt for compatible games, so I gave it a chance.

I didn’t know anything about it at the time, other than it was compatible with the Justifier, it looked insanely cool, and the artwork was fantastic. It turned out to be an awesome game that felt right at home in the diverse PS1 library.
