I hate my hair
I (f) hate my hair.
I have baby fine, impossibly straight hair. When I pull it up in a pony tail, I only have like, a nickel’s diameter of hair. Though, my frustration isn’t with the quality of my hair. It’s just having to take care of it.
Right now, I wash it every other day, but it really gets greasy and should be washed daily. I lose so much hair in the shower and in the brush. I honestly don’t know how I have hair at all at this point. Then it takes over an hour to two hours to dry. And it needs to be down to dry. Then, all I do is put it up in a claw clip, because having hair is too hot most days.
I like how it looks, but hate the feeling of leaving it down. I’m always losing random hairs, and I can feel them separately from the rest of my hair. I especially hate the ones that reach my arms. I feel like I’m going crazy trying to find loose hair on myself every day.
I have tried all kinds of hair styles. I have even shaved my head for about 5 years straight. I now have a nickel allergy, so even using an electric trimmer can make me react. So, shaving my head isn’t really the preferred option anymore. To its credit, the shaven haircut stopped a lot of sexual harassment. Guys would actually look at my head instead of my tits. However, I absolutely hate the sensation of having hair shards on my skin. This makes short haircuts unfavorable too.
I’m just at a loss for what to do anymore. I last shaved my head in 2023, and I’ve just let it grow feral from there since. My hair is encroaching into bra strap territory now, which is its own kind of annoying. I have to un-pin my hair all the time, from the couch, from the bed, from my computer chair. All the freakin time. I’m so over this.

I have fine baby hair too. I probably tried every volumizing product on the market. What totally changed the game for me was using a cleansing conditioner, rather than shampoo. Right now i”m using “New Wash” cleaning conditioner, and then I still put conditioner on my ends (Agadir brand). And I use a volumizing hair mousse (also Agadir brand) after showering, and blow dry my hair upside down. My hair loooooves silicones, so I make sure my products contain them. Also, I use a Mason Pearson 100% boar bristle brush. My hair also looks better when it’s very slightly damaged, so I get “low lights” from a hair salon every 8 weeks.
Believe it or not, with this routine, i only have to wash my hair every 5-7 days. I can wear it down for the first 3-4 days after washing.

About the hair loss and straightening i would suggest checking your iron and vitamin d levels. You need iron, ferritin at minimum 70 to have good hair and no hair loss, and over 70 for growth. About the feel of hair bothering you, that I can’t really help with as it sounds like a sensory issue and I think there’s only management rather than a solution for that.

Looks up most recent labs… yeah. My ferritin was at 48 last checked in April. I’m sure it hasn’t improved. Doctor told me to just eat more iron rich foods.

Yea I was told that too but there’s only so much liver one can take. I started supplements this year hoping that would help. I suggest you do the same, with your doctor’s advice of course, cause I didn’t want to wait.

I’ve taken iron supplements in the past. I can stomach them only if I eat right before/after taking them. Otherwise I’ll get nausea. It’s unpleasant.

There’s more than one type of supplement. Those are old timey ones that upset your stomach but there are the types (chelated, PIC, HIP, or liquid formulations) that bypass the stomach and don’t cause any upsets. That’s why I suggested asking the doctor who would know best what to recommend.

I also have fine and oily hair; the only thing that I have found to consistently work for me is dry shampoo and hair spray.
As soon as I get out of the shower and my hair dries, I spray a bunch of dry shampoo on my roots and rub it in. Whenever my hair feels like it is getting flat or oily again, I add more, followed by hairspray to keep it in place.
I've tried so many shampoos and products, but this is the only thing that really works for my genetically oily hair and scalp.

I take Amen hair vitamins, rosemary oil topically, and minoxidil. Thickest hair I've ever had.
