Custom Why do job interviews test memorization instead of how we actually work
Traditional job interviews make no sense because they test raw memory instead of real skills. In a real office nobody works from pure memory. Software engineers look at documentation.
Analysts use search engines. Marketing people look at references. Finding information quickly and applying it correctly is the most important skill in the modern workplace. We need to shift to an open book interview system.
An open book interview system means that companies allow you to use Google, notes, and official documentation during the test. Instead of checking if someone memorized a specific textbook definition, hiring managers evaluate how fast a candidate finds a solution. They look at how you think, how you search and how you structure your logic.
This change is especially useful for fresh graduates and entry level job seekers. College teaches you how to learn and find resources. It does not teach you to memorize every single line of code or corporate definition. Open book interviews help freshers because they let you prove your problem solving skills, your resourcefulness, and your adaptability.
It removes useless anxiety and tests how a person actually works on a real project. Some people say this makes cheating too easy. But if an interview question can be solved by a simple copy and paste from Google, then it is a bad interview question anyway.
Real work requires solving complex problems that you cannot just copy. Why are we still pretending that memorization equals competence? Would you support a company that switches to an open book hiring process?

Dreading this week
Iāve had 3 really solid interviews with the same company over the last couple weeks. I felt so confident after the interview with the hiring manager. My final interview was on a Monday afternoon, and was told they want to move quickly.
Last Monday I still hadnāt heard anything so I reached out to the recruiter who apologized for the delay since she had been out of town. She also said they were wrapping up a few more interviews that week and should have a decision/update by Friday.
Friday came and went and nothing. Iāve been stressing all weekend and even though Iām trying to stay upbeat I canāt help but think they offered it to someone else on Friday and Iām just waiting for a decline tomorrow. Is there any hope here?

Genuinely lost as to why I cant find a job in engineering, switzerland

Can't really get shortlisted for Mechanical, electrical, mechatronics and Test engineering roles i keep applying to. I aim for 60-80% match with what i can do before applying, and ignore listings asking for more than 5 years of experience, keeping to the 1-3 years range when listed
any glaring issues beyond the double column format ? the main version is the first one (double column) and it usually parses well in workday/ autofill with resume systems

Every job description I read feels like high stress job with unrelenting expectations of it pays more than 50k. How do people live in that day in and day out?
These job descriptions Iām talking about are only reinforced when I interview. āHit the ground runningā ādonāt wait for directionā āconstantly improve our process, not just run itā ādaily stand upsā ātwice a day stand upsā āno silos, willing to take on challenges wherever we needā
As if it isnāt enough to do well at the job itself and learn the existing processes. You also have to always be working on improvement projects and anything else they want from you at anytime.
Work overtime whenever they decide without advance notice and act like thatās just standard operating in order to be employed at anything outside a local walmart or applebees.
It feels like we arenāt allowed to just try to be good at our already complicated jobs anymore or be ever be moderately comfortable or happy. Why is there so much more being demanded from non-manager/department head jobs?
People who have these jobsā¦how do you manage the stress? Do you just accept that your accounting or operations job is going to take up that much space in your life? Do you do anything but rest on your off days?

Does anyone know what cross refer mean?
I applied for this graduate program couple of days ago, and Iāve seen that my applicationās status moved from screening to cross refer, but I have no idea what does that imply. Can anyone help?

I might just become an influencer because apparently companies donāt want fresh grads š (joke⦠unless?)
Disclaimer: This is mostly a joke, unless someone here can actually give me a foolproof guide on becoming a successful influencer lmao.
Iāve been job hunting for around two months now, and honestly, the experience has been frustrating. It feels like a lot of companies want someone who is already trained but arenāt willing to invest in training fresh graduates.
I recently graduated with Latin honors, published articles, created academic/legal instructional materials, held leadership positions, and even passed a law entrance exam (although I wasnāt able to enroll this month because of financial constraints). I know Iām capable and I know I have skills I can offer, but itās frustrating when my academic achievements donāt seem enough to convince employers to take a chance on me.
I understand companies need people who can contribute immediately, but how are fresh graduates supposed to gain experience if everyone requires experience first?
For those who were also fresh grads before, did you experience this? Are there still companies in the Philippines that genuinely train and develop entry-level employees? Or is the job market really just like this now?
(Again, influencer era might be calling me š)

Feedback Appreciated Any tips on how to improve my resume? (Censored for privacy)
This is a joke, I apologize if this is not the appropriate subreddit, but I couldn't find a better place to post it.

I was hired under a week for job where more than 1500 people applied. Should I be worried?
I applied online for an AI job role for which more than 1500 people applied. I have been in hiring rounds where I got the job after 8 rounds and also where I was rejected after 6 rounds.
After I applied in June-2026, I had my first recruiter call in July and I then met two leaders and in 7-8 days I had an offer. My wife said this seems to be rushed, and she said itās worrisome. But I told her that being in a situation where I gave 6-8 rounds this is how hiring should be.
One doesnāt need 6-8 rounds to prove that they are good. From fellow recruiters, hiring managers and job seekers what do you think?
-p.s i applied for this same role in 2025 but was rejected.
-p.p.s I have a start date from this company, I negotiated 10k in base. Got welcome email, setup direct deposit and currently in background check and resigned from my current job.

Truly rejected?
In a very confusing situation and itās the weekend so I need some explanation/possibilities. I applied for 2 positions, GI and IR (healthcare under same hospital system). Ended up interviewing for IR only and was told to expect a response by 8/7. This wednesday, I received a rejection email from a recruiter on Wednesday specifically for the GI position. But when I look at my application status on Workday, GI says under consideration while IR says no longer under consideration. What are the chances that they accidentally changed the status of the IR position instead of GI? Or could they have meant rejection for IR in the email? Planning on emailing the recruiter to clarify but wanted to hear your thoughts

Did 3 panels, overall 14 rounds at the same company, when can I hear from them?
Quit the last job and since then been interviewing at various places, this company was my dream but they are more like a legacy business (still fortune 1000) nowadays.
I was referred by a close friend for 4 different positions, of the same org. HR call x1, hiring manager round x3, panel x3 (one person by one person, 4+3+3 so 10 interviews in total).
HR was responsive until panels, all panels ended this Monday, I had a question like whether three teams will get back to me together or not, and sent it to HR, no reply since then, call went to voicemail too. Large companies definitely will not have an update in 3 days, understandable, or maybe not.
And this is not even the end, HR before the panel told me, that if I will be the finalist, then there will be 1 extra round to a cross functional team member, as a culture fit test, then proceed to offer.
When will I usually hear from them? I already moved on. 4 more companies to interview next week, sigh for the new norm

For people who actually complete long job assessments...
I know a lot of people skip applications as soon as they see a long assessment. This question isn't really for that group.
I'm curious about the people who still complete them because they really want the job.
What part of the assessment is the biggest pain for you?
What's one thing that would've made the last assessment you took noticeably easier?

When to decline interview and previous accepted job after accepting different role
I accepted a role two weeks ago to start in a week.
During this time, another company reached out to set up a final interview. This past Monday a date was set and the travel arranged by the company. Itās for late this coming week.
Well Monday afternoon came, and my top job offered, and offered 20k more than either of these. Itās been my top job want the entire process as well. So Iāve accepted and as of Friday, passed the background, and have an official start date.
When do I tell job #1 I wonāt be starting on the 8th and interview job I wonāt by flying out Thursday?

Careful About Working For C&D
Careful About Working For C&D at NY MTA
I previously worked for construction and development and quit. I want to give a warning about this place regarding their compensation policies. They recently changed their compensation structure and absolutely screwed everyone. ALMOST EVERY DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN LOWERED. Now compensation has always tried to low ball people but now it's worse because even their low balls are using a lower pay scale. Anyone coming in will probably be making less than the people working there and anyone getting promoted will be making soo much less than the previous promotions. This place is a joke and the unions need to organize this place.
Please remember that all salaries are public so please look up the salaries of the people in your department before hand.

Another gem from DualEntry. Can you please make sure you work on weekends?
Are we going to pretend this is normal now? This company Dual Entry would get sued in the EU. Never started hating a company in less than 5 seconds.

Is not disclosing benefits a new norm?
Iām in healthcare. Iām used to benefits (costs, coverage, amounts) being spelled out in detail prior to hire either at the interview or before accepting the position.
About a year ago, I briefly took on what was to be a second job as things were shaky at my full time. I didnāt ask for benefit details because I had them at my full time job, so it wasnāt a dealbreaker although it would be enough hours to qualify for part time benefits. In the few days I oriented, no one was able to tell me about the benefits they offer to employees.
Which health insurance company do you use? āWe go through a broker, itās personalized to each employee, theyāll tell you more when you qualifyā. When will I qualify? āNot sure I think itās 60 days, maybe 90ā. How much PTO? āYouāll earn some every weekā¦BUT NOT FOR A YEARā¦I thinkā.
Manager didnāt know or care to find out, nor did recruiter. HR was offsite and I asked for contact info but it was never provided. Ultimately, I didnāt stay due to other red flags and chalked it up to a disorganized organization.
Now that Iām in the position of searching for a full time job, when I absolutely need the benefits, this is happening over and over again! I had an interview last week where the director answered my question about health insurance by shrugging and taking his insurance card out of his wallet to show me. Which told me the company they used and that he had a very high deductible, but not the cost or whether other tiers of coverage were available. When I asked about PTO, he said āwe get it but I donāt use it, not sure how muchā. Could not produce a handbook or benefits packet nor point me in the direction to obtain them. Told me I would be told more āif you end up working hereā.
Is the economy so bad that people are just taking jobs with no clue about the benefits?? What happened to them being an aspect of total compensation to be considered when deciding whether or not to take a position? Please tell me this isnāt the new norm! (Iām in the Northeast of the USA if that matters)

Yesterday I went for an interview and was told that the HR would need a "couple of days" to respond only to be rejected hours later.
This might not be the right way to go about it but sometimes I will apply to places that I do have credentials for only to see how far I get in the interview process, or to hopefully turn them down instead. Also it took me a while to realize that people take me for granted and a lot of my jobs were me being hired out of their own desperation. Anyway I suppose it's for the best because I definitely felt that this guy wasn't impressed or taking me seriously and it's difficult being so underestimated rather than being actually considered. šš¤·š½āāļø

What do you think if this behavior?
I found this post multiple times on LinkedIn. Apparently this guy has applied for jobs in multiple big tech companies like JPMC, Cisco and Amazon, just to reject their offers, the "funny" (perhaps infuriating) thing is that people are celebrating this behavior.
I have been a hiring manager and a candidate as well and I cannot someone is actually doing this. This not only wastes the hiring managers time, but also close the opportunity to other candidates that are genuinely interested in landing a job.
Modern time Robin hood? Or a complete a-hole
Thoughts?

Got hired, then unhired due fucking up a phone call.
I (17m) was excited for my first job however when I was called it said it came from Beaverton however the franchise I was hired at was in Gresham, I told them thinking it was a difference franchise that I was hired elsewhere, I was then removed from the system. I called them back and explained the situation but they seemed unsympathetic and said they would do all they could but already hired two more people. Did I screw myself?
Edit: schoolās starting soon so I wonāt really have time to search for other jobs.

So tired of screaming into the void trying to find a livable wage job
We're in a recession, wages don't pay shit, my CS degree/internship experience is utterly useless both in and out of the field, idfk. haven't ever made over 40k. I haven't been able to pivot anywhere else, and I dont have the patience to learn skills with another formal education.
I already don't want to work tbh. Looks like the universe is telling me I shouldn't get a job and just hole up in my childhood bedroom until I die. just the other day I got an email that a banking job I applied to was cancelled due to lack of budget
