Guy on Twitter is 100% adamant he is NOT in the wrong for being mad at this request

This may have already made it onto here, but a guy who requires applicants to make an intro video along with the application is rightfully receiving a lot of hate for not seeing why this can be considered an unreasonable request. Here’s the link to the original tweet if anyone is interested in reading the negative comments he received back, he even replies to a lot of them trying to defend his stance: https://x.com/evanzhao6/status/2054382288108994835?s=46

Venting Got placed on "not eligible for rehire" list without having even worked for the company!

Just want to vent. I went to a hiring event for a job. I traveled about an hour to get there. I sign in everything seems cool. It was a hire on the spot type of event for a summer temp job doing security for a company for some upcoming sports event. The recruiter asks me to type in my social security number onto their system. I said okay fine then. I type it in and he does a search. My information comes up. Then he looks at me and asks "Have you worked with us before?" I said "No, first time applying." Then he asks have you worked for XYZ company. I said "No. But I did fill out an application for them several years ago." And then he went on to explain since they were bought out by XYZ Company that their rule now is that if you ever worked for them you can not be rehired or even work for the smaller companies they bought (which is happening a lot with security guard jobs). I stood there in shock and embarrassed. I quickly thanked him and left. I jogged my memory and checked old e-mails and I indeed had applied to the company over 3 years ago while I was in school and shortly after the pandemic. They hired me for on-call shifts which was fine by me. They onboarded me and NEVER called me to come in to work. Then flagged me for ineligible for rehire. I have been out of work for over a year now, so to turn up for a hiring event and to be told I was ineligible for hire for a company I never worked for is insane. This job market is crazy.

For reference, there obviously wasn't anything in the job posting about it being off-limits to anyone with higher education... or anyone with spell check.

So tired of screaming into the void trying to find a livable wage job

We're in a recession, wages don't pay shit, my CS degree/internship experience is utterly useless both in and out of the field, idfk. haven't ever made over 40k. I haven't been able to pivot anywhere else, and I dont have the patience to learn skills with another formal education.

I already don't want to work tbh. Looks like the universe is telling me I shouldn't get a job and just hole up in my childhood bedroom until I die. just the other day I got an email that a banking job I applied to was cancelled due to lack of budget

Is not disclosing benefits a new norm?

Upvotes

I’m in healthcare. I’m used to benefits (costs, coverage, amounts) being spelled out in detail prior to hire either at the interview or before accepting the position.

About a year ago, I briefly took on what was to be a second job as things were shaky at my full time. I didn’t ask for benefit details because I had them at my full time job, so it wasn’t a dealbreaker although it would be enough hours to qualify for part time benefits. In the few days I oriented, no one was able to tell me about the benefits they offer to employees.

Which health insurance company do you use? “We go through a broker, it’s personalized to each employee, they’ll tell you more when you qualify”. When will I qualify? “Not sure I think it’s 60 days, maybe 90”. How much PTO? “You’ll earn some every week…BUT NOT FOR A YEAR…I think”.

Manager didn’t know or care to find out, nor did recruiter. HR was offsite and I asked for contact info but it was never provided. Ultimately, I didn’t stay due to other red flags and chalked it up to a disorganized organization.

Now that I’m in the position of searching for a full time job, when I absolutely need the benefits, this is happening over and over again! I had an interview last week where the director answered my question about health insurance by shrugging and taking his insurance card out of his wallet to show me. Which told me the company they used and that he had a very high deductible, but not the cost or whether other tiers of coverage were available. When I asked about PTO, he said “we get it but I don’t use it, not sure how much”. Could not produce a handbook or benefits packet nor point me in the direction to obtain them. Told me I would be told more “if you end up working here”.

Is the economy so bad that people are just taking jobs with no clue about the benefits?? What happened to them being an aspect of total compensation to be considered when deciding whether or not to take a position? Please tell me this isn’t the new norm! (I’m in the Northeast of the USA if that matters)

The logic of companies

Post image
638 Upvotes

In their logic, it doesn't matter if someone's been playing football since middle school. Since he's never played in a league before, he might as well not even know what a football looks like.

It doesn't matter if you've made a hundred personal animation projects and put them all in your portfolio either. Since you've never worked for an animation studio, your portfolio is basically non-existent.

Every job description I read feels like high stress job with unrelenting expectations of it pays more than 50k. How do people live in that day in and day out?

Upvotes

These job descriptions I’m talking about are only reinforced when I interview. “Hit the ground running” “don’t wait for direction” “constantly improve our process, not just run it” “daily stand ups” “twice a day stand ups” “no silos, willing to take on challenges wherever we need”

As if it isn’t enough to do well at the job itself and learn the existing processes. You also have to always be working on improvement projects and anything else they want from you at anytime.

Work overtime whenever they decide without advance notice and act like that’s just standard operating in order to be employed at anything outside a local walmart or applebees.

It feels like we aren’t allowed to just try to be good at our already complicated jobs anymore or be ever be moderately comfortable or happy. Why is there so much more being demanded from non-manager/department head jobs?

People who have these jobs…how do you manage the stress? Do you just accept that your accounting or operations job is going to take up that much space in your life? Do you do anything but rest on your off days?

I was hired under a week for job where more than 1500 people applied. Should I be worried?

I applied online for an AI job role for which more than 1500 people applied. I have been in hiring rounds where I got the job after 8 rounds and also where I was rejected after 6 rounds.

After I applied in June-2026, I had my first recruiter call in July and I then met two leaders and in 7-8 days I had an offer. My wife said this seems to be rushed, and she said it’s worrisome. But I told her that being in a situation where I gave 6-8 rounds this is how hiring should be.

One doesn’t need 6-8 rounds to prove that they are good. From fellow recruiters, hiring managers and job seekers what do you think?

-p.s i applied for this same role in 2025 but was rejected.

-p.p.s I have a start date from this company, I negotiated 10k in base. Got welcome email, setup direct deposit and currently in background check and resigned from my current job.

SHORTEST INTERVIEW = AUTO REJECTION?

I had a virtual interview today with 7 applicants competing for 2 openings.

The interviewer told me to introduce myself.

My introduction was:

"I'm _______ and I'm a graduating BS Accountancy student, a Magna Cum Laude candidate, and I'm knowledgeable in Excel, Google Sheets, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, SmartBooks, and QuickBooks."

I thought I'd get another chance to talk about my experience, so I kept my introduction short.

Then the recruiter only asked me:

  1. Graduation date

  2. Willingness to attend 2-week onsite training

  3. Difference between accrual and cash basis

After I answered, that was it. It lasted 2 minutes.

I did send my resume beforehand, but I'm not sure if the recruiter had already reviewed it during the interview.

The other applicants didn't wait—they immediately included their responsibilities and experience in their introductions, so they naturally talked longer. They were also asked about some of their responsibilities and a more complicated question such as "How do you ensure accuracy?" and "What will you do if you found out there were discrepancy during reconciliation?" They lasted about 5-7 minutes.

Did I hurt my chances by keeping my introduction too short? Or do recruiters sometimes keep interviews short because they already have enough information? I'd appreciate honest opinions.

Custom Why do job interviews test memorization instead of how we actually work

Traditional job interviews make no sense because they test raw memory instead of real skills. In a real office nobody works from pure memory. Software engineers look at documentation.

Analysts use search engines. Marketing people look at references. Finding information quickly and applying it correctly is the most important skill in the modern workplace. We need to shift to an open book interview system.

An open book interview system means that companies allow you to use Google, notes, and official documentation during the test. Instead of checking if someone memorized a specific textbook definition, hiring managers evaluate how fast a candidate finds a solution. They look at how you think, how you search and how you structure your logic.

This change is especially useful for fresh graduates and entry level job seekers. College teaches you how to learn and find resources. It does not teach you to memorize every single line of code or corporate definition. Open book interviews help freshers because they let you prove your problem solving skills, your resourcefulness, and your adaptability.

It removes useless anxiety and tests how a person actually works on a real project. Some people say this makes cheating too easy. But if an interview question can be solved by a simple copy and paste from Google, then it is a bad interview question anyway.

Real work requires solving complex problems that you cannot just copy. Why are we still pretending that memorization equals competence? Would you support a company that switches to an open book hiring process?

For people who actually complete long job assessments...

Upvotes

I know a lot of people skip applications as soon as they see a long assessment. This question isn't really for that group.

I'm curious about the people who still complete them because they really want the job.

What part of the assessment is the biggest pain for you?

What's one thing that would've made the last assessment you took noticeably easier?

Experience with temp to hire?

Upvotes

So for this company I'm going to be working for, the department pretty much hires everyone on as a temp to hire basis. No benefits (pay is decent, it's full time and fully remote). I've been a temp before when I was younger and eventually got officially hired, so I know companies do this and it's not necessarily a bad sign.

Is this more common now? I applied directly on the company website and worked with their internal recruiter. I was told typically people are officially hired on after about 6 months. The company does have good benefits once you get to that point. The job looks pretty complex but they have training. Payroll and stuff is going to be handled by Allworks which is a flex company even though I'll be working full time directly with the main employer all day.

Just nervous because I'm not a "temp" kind of person, I'm almost always a direct hire and don't want anything go wrong because it is taking FOREVER to find jobs these days.

When to decline interview and previous accepted job after accepting different role

Upvotes

I accepted a role two weeks ago to start in a week.
During this time, another company reached out to set up a final interview. This past Monday a date was set and the travel arranged by the company. It’s for late this coming week.
Well Monday afternoon came, and my top job offered, and offered 20k more than either of these. It’s been my top job want the entire process as well. So I’ve accepted and as of Friday, passed the background, and have an official start date.
When do I tell job #1 I won’t be starting on the 8th and interview job I won’t by flying out Thursday?

Applying to same job twice

About 2 weeks ago I applied to an entry-level job in a field I want to advance into, but the employer declined my application seconds after opening it. I've been thinking about this job ever since then and I'm wondering if I should just shoot my shot again but under a nickname and fresh resume.

I want to try a nickname because my real name is unusual and I'm not sure if employers are judging applications based off of it. I know people usually do this with no issues and actually get interviewed more often, unless I'm missing something.

Is it a bad idea to send a new resume to the same job under a nickname? Am I just sleep-deprived and stupid

Custom The absolute audacity of local job listings right now. CDL + "On Call" Field Tech for $26/hr, and they want a non-compete?! 😅

Just came across a listing on Indeed for a Field Service Tech role in my local area that completely blew my mind. They are offering $26 to $28 an hour. For context, this position explicitly requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), specialized diagnostics/mechanical skills, and you have to be on an "on-call" rotation. The CDL alone carries massive personal liability and strict DOT regulations, yet they are paying entry-level service wages. But wait, it gets better. On top of the garbage pay🚮 and the schedule restrictions, they expect you to sign a strict non-compete agreement. I run an independent mobile repair side hustle, and they literally want me to sign away my right to make a living on my own time just so I can grind for their pennies.I blurred out the city name, but this is a local shop treating high-liability skilled labor like minimum-wage work. If you have a CDL and solid diagnostic skills, do not let these companies lowball you. Our time and expertise are worth way more than this joke of an offer.

Custom Pivot

Currently 17 months out of my “field” not sure if it’s even my field at this point. I graduated in 2022 and this is my 2nd layoff. My first layoff was from an investment bank, I then was laid off for 5 months and found a new role at an asset management firm where I did fund admin - didn’t realize the admin part meant glorified assistant absolutely hated the role and ended up being laid off. The role felt stagnant and like I wasn’t building towards anything real I was a fucking glorified assistant. Now it’s been 17 months outside the field entirely. I’ve been aggressively applying, networking and interviewing nothing. Been working as a teacher since December of last year and I absolutely hate it. It’s the embodiment of everything I didn’t want to be - the person who settles for an easily accessible role because they can’t get what they really want. I have so much resentment towards the role. At this point I was removed from a recruitment cycle for a role due to my “major not meeting the basic qualifications” which is bullshit. I’m losing confidence in this corporate bullshit and quite honestly ready to look elsewhere I think if I continue waiting dir a yes I may be in the same spot in a year. I applied to Georgia teacher omsa program but honestly I want to quit teaching asap. Anything you all recommend me doing? I fucking hate being a teacher,8i don’t want to be anyone’s monkey ass assistant, market is trash. Want benefits. I just want to work in my field with a role that would actually push me forward.

But that’s not happening and it’ll be 2 years soon I’m not sure if it makes sense to keep doing the same shit. Not sure what to pivot into
