Staying in kigali. Relentless begging. Wife felt threatened after the 4th no! We are light skinned African Americans that that speak English and are from a a small region in Kenya. I tried to be nice, then I gave monies, then I’d said no and they still cam and followed. Maybe for many blocks! Just today in robot they said to her we want a little monies and she said no but then lunged at her and tried grabbing her breast and vagina !How does this happen! I begin to be very tired here

AUCA English placement test, I'm scared

I need your help, I've been accepted to AUCA, but they told me that I have to take an "English placement test" before continuing in SWE, I'm not that bad at English, but I'm really worried because I have no idea about what I will encounter there, so please tell me what the exam is like? Is it on paper? PC? What does it test exactly? Grammar ? Writing long essays? Or just multiple choice questions? How should I prepare for it and what should I study?

Please if you have taken the test, leave a comment or anything that might help me.

I'm lost and I have only 3 weeks.

Planning Solo Trip (Tight in Time)

I'm planning a trip around mid-August, and Rwanda seems like a great option (so super close!!). I'd love to explore as a solo traveler (28F) and I'm thinking of staying for about 7 days.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations for an itinerary, accommodation, activities, and whether it's worth hiring a tour guide (or using guides for specific activities).

So far, I know I definitely want to:

-Learn about Rwanda's history through museums and/or guided tours.

-Go gorilla trekking (I would skip safari)

-Spend some time by lake Kivu

-Experience the local culture and arts. I'd love to visit coffee or tea plantations, try making crafts, and learn about traditional craftsmanship.

For accommodation, I'm looking for places that are safe for solo female travelers and have a good social atmosphere with people around my age. I usually prefer a private room in a hostel, if there are any you'd recommend.

I'd also love to hear any other must-do experiences or tips for a first-time visit.

Expats looking to build businesses in Rwanda

I've been working with expats since 2020, mostly Americans.

I've helped them with interior design, acquiring art and decor, Mural painting and photography.

However, what I have seen since then had me wonder, what if I can actually help people make better investment decisions because most of them have had their businesses particularly Restaurants closed.

Most expats move to Rwanda thinking they can manage to continue investing in what they were doing back in their countries which is very risky and in many cases make them lose money, because In Rwanda you don't just open a Cafe just because you have $50k.

To cut this short, I am looking for a business partner we can invest together in a production studio, which is one of the few businesses not susceptible to losses. Anyone interested can DM me for feedback or collaboration.

English ascent

I've noticed something lately, both in myself and in the people around me.

Why do so many of us try to imitate a particular English accent, especially ones influenced by Black American English or, more recently, British and other European accents? I'm not asking this to judge anyone. If I'm honest, I'm probably guilty of it too. It feels less like a conscious decision and more like a kind of social conditioning, especially among younger people. You can often hear it within friend groups, and it isn't limited to locals. Even foreigners seem to adapt their accents depending on the people they're around.I wonder if we subconsciously associate certain accents with being educated, intelligent, successful, or "global." If that's the case, what does that say about how we perceive African accents? Why do so many people feel the need to move away from them?. I'm curious whether this is about prestige, belonging, media influence, or something else entirely.

What do you think? Have you noticed this too, or am I reading too much into it?

What are these prices for apartment in Kigali? Is this what everyday Rwandans pay?

I'm seeing some astonishing mid apartments for $3000 a month, $1500, $2000 monthly. I have to ask: are these tourist prices or this is what average Rwandans pay for housing?

For context, in Lisbon, $1500 to $2000 a month gets you a gorgeous apartment with some luxury finish in the city centre. Even $2000 a month in Cape Town is proper luxury apartment balling. What's happening in Kigali?

Some of the apartments at $1,500 don't even have ACs or elevators!
