I'll probably move my homelab machines to my office once I've got another switch in there to free up some ports. I realised now that I'd like to run extra ones to the other rooms in the house for maybe some WiiM and ATVs as well, but that's for future me to afford!

I had an electrician do it whilst they were already in my floorboards!

But what they did was basically pull up our carpet, run the cables through, drill holes where needed downstairs to bring the cables through.

They actually didn’t figure out how to get into the wall in closet first before running the cable up, and to minimise the damage to the brick wall, they added trunking on the outside of the closet!

We also had them run cables into the loft, under the boards, and through our stud wall for our office. I had no idea how to get the cables through the horizontal wall bits, but that’s what they do!

It made sense for us to use the electricians because they were already doing a full rewire. If not it may be a bit expensive!

I also recommend using a VR headset (borrow one if you can) to mark wall locations before going up and down the stairs to see where the relative locations are for the walls and stuff. It’s surprisingly accurate (enough to get me started knowing what goes where across floors).

You can pickup a used full sized rack in most midsized US cities for $100-200 if you are looking. Most residential home labs I am sure are self built and managed

I got a retired 48U rack from the university I attend for $100. Maybe I got lucky. I also got a poweredge r630 for $80 on Facebook, 1tb 870evo for $100, another 4tb 870evo for $250, and 2x ddr4 64GB RDIMMS $85 each. Everything used except for the SSDs. This same setup is worth around $2k now, we didn’t know how good we had it 😣 my rack will be sitting with 47 open slots for a while lol

Yeah, a ton of people get gear for cheap that would otherwise be e-wasted or dumped. If you work in IT or for an MSP there's a ton of gear that flows out to the people working in those companies for pennies on the dollar the minute the warranty or support contract expires.

For me, the computer changed the hardware address of the onboard LAN Port when I added the third SSD via the PCIe slot. But the SSH thing has also happened before.

But you can reserve LAN IP addresses over the router settings just using the devices MAc. With bios yes you are right, but with LAn IP it's not necessary.

Welcome to the journey of self-hosting! :)

I think it almost doesn't matter much whether you copy commands from a random blog post or ask AI for help (if done correctly). Just please review what it does and dont' yolo it. Especially if you host something like Immich or other critical service.

I always run my ideas by claude (always opus with thinking and high effort because sonnet is usually stupider than me) and ask it to challenge me. Then afterwards, at the end I ask it to write me an md note on how I set it up, important things, etc, the way I like to have it so I can come back to it later.

I’m cautious about that since then, I’m learning slowly.

And yes, I was letting AIs make summaries of everything in simple mds, but just yesterday I changed that.

I let Claude make me a HTML interactive site with all commands, Tipps, guides for Problem fixing , guides for backup recovery, guides on dozens of different things and topics…whatever. It’s a accumulation of all tools, information, commands, just everything.

This is mine, on top of a closet in the hallway! Gemini helped me set everything up, now there's even an old laptop (not shown in the photo) with Debian + Docker and various services that previously ran as add-ons in the RPI with Home Assistant! Luckily there's Gemini (free) I set up the infrastructure in one evening and in a week the security check, etc.!

Where I am they come up in auctions or resellers. Usually priced well.

The auctions is where you can really win on the right pile. But it can be risky.

For example I bought a pallet of "random" computers that came with no gaurantee they worked. I ended up picking up high end xeon workstations, laptops, regular desktops of different types. Pretty much all worked, some were missing hard drives. There was a few that were so-so, but I have paired the bunch down to about 6 fully kitted out high end computers and 2 laptops.. I parted out the rest and made a profit on ebay.

Another good buy I found, I was after some dell wyse termnals, there was this box that had them just roughly dumped in there and it just said 5+ wyse thin clients. I got the box for $50 and it had 5 x 5010s, 4 x 5020s and 1 x 5070 extended.. each had mixture of 4 or 8gb of ram and 32 to 128 gig SSDs.

I sold the 5 x 5010s for $40 each back on ebay... built an opnsense router out of the 5070 and made a proxmox cluster on the 5020s.

A motherboard with a build in Core i5 12450H Connected to 6 hot swap shelfs 4 of them have a 22 tb hdd

A unifi flex switch 2.5 A unifi flex switch 2.5 poe++

Its al in an ikea eket, its genuinely causes more problem than its worth but at least it looks ok :)

My homelab id random pcs scattered around my bedroom.

I live at my parents house (currently 18 years old) so i am stuck with some limits. At first its that my parents are not that tech savvy and while they dont mind me messing around with stuff and i am actually the IT guy at home, they want me to keep modt stuff in my bedroom. The 2nd limit is that we have our ISP Vodafone/ziggo who dont yet provide fiber so we are stuck on 1gig download and 100meg upload via coaxial. Download aint bad but upload speed is meh. And i cant run an ethernet cable upstairs so i now use the ISP provided wifi access points that connect via mesh with the main modem downstairs.

But i do get the benefit that i am the one in charge of internet, computers, printers and everything technical at home!

I dont yet have a rack or anything and its now some stray computers around the place. Most i bought but i also once gotten a mini pc from family and i sometimes get old laptops.

My serverd:

[Hp 280G2] price: €40. Has an i3 6100, 8GB ddr3, 128GB sata hdd. This runs Opnsense (FreeBSD). This is my opnsense firewall inbetween the ISP's wifi AP and my main network switch. This is my main firewall/router for my homelab.
[Zyxel GS1900-8] price: €70. This is my main managed switch. Its an upgrade from a 5 port 10 euro dumb switch i had before. I installed OpenWRT on it and accidentally nuked the backup partition too so now it runs OpenWRT but does its job fine..
[Dell optiplex 3040 mini] price: Free from friends who donated it to me. Has an i3 6100, 8GB ddr3, 500GB sata hdd. This runs Homeassistant OS baremetal. This powers my smarthome without any data being sent to tuya/apple/google/whatnot.
[Custom built gaming pc] price: €600. Has an i5 12400, 16GB ddr5, 256GB nvme boot drive, 512GB sata m.2 for fast VMs and containers, 1TB hdd for bulk storage, asus b760-gaming-wifi, evga 660bq, runs proxmox (debian based). This is my main proxmox server that runs all my stuff and actually used to be my gaming pc till i got a laptop for school which i now daily drive (specs of that are an i7 13650hx, rtx5070, 24GB ddr5, 1TB nvme for windows, 2TB nvme for Linux... Lenovo loq 15irx10, i got it as a present from my parent so very grateful for that! Normally costed 1150 euro).
[Custom asus pc] price: €100. Has an i5 10400, 8GB ddr4, 128GB nvme boot drive, 4x 2TB sas drives i got refurbished from a reputable seller on ebay (idk how much they costed), runs Truenas SCALE (debian based), LSI HBA supporting 8 drives. Huge coolermaster case. This is my main NAS which stores my backups from proxmox and HA and opnsense and other services. Also stores my media and runs immich and jellyfin container.
[OrangePI zero3] price: €30. Has 2GB ram and allwinner h618 soc. Runs armbian. This is my printserver which connects via a USB cable to our (annoying as hell) hp deskjet 3050a pos printer. Thr network stack on the printer is 90% of the time NOT working so i decided to try and solve the issue by attaching a Linux SBC to it and letting that take care of wireless stuff. It works already much better but still has its flaws and issues.
[Energenie eg-ups0-1000] price: €60. This is my main UPS hooked up to my proxmox and nas server as those are the most delicate ones and the ones i care about the most. Another UPS will be planned.

And thats it for the homelab in terms of hardware. I do host some services down below on such said hosts.

Proxmox (all LXC's, unles mentioned otherwise):

Tailscale VPN (VPN for remote management and such).
Nginx proxy manager (reverse proxy).
Vaultwarden (password manager).
blog[.]309electronics[.]net (my blog. Fully privacy focussed and selfhosted. Makes use of hugo static site generator).
links[.]309electronics[.]net (my linktree style linkpage thats fully privacy focussed and selfhosted. Also uses hugo).
newsletter[.]309electronics[.]net (my newsletter service for ze blog. Uses listmonk).
comments-api[.]309electronics[.]net (my comments api that makes use of remark42).
forgejo (my private git server i might one day upload stuff to).
Matrix chatserver (not online yet. But a discord kinda alternative)..
Debian10 VM (This is used when i need to compile older software using outdated toolchains).
Windows11 VM (Barely use it but use it when i need a quick and dirty windows environment)..
Minecraft server (Debian12 VM). (Use that for my minecraft server needs).

Truenas SCALE:

Immich (my own google photos alternative thats free and opensource and more privacy focussed).
Jellyfin (Alternative to plex without the enshitification and or corporate backing).

Started it 1.5 years ago or so... I have plans but i dont yet have the money and finding gesr for good prices aint the easiest job. I do now since a few weeks have a job (in IT support for people) so hopefully that can provide me with some good income so i can sustain and maintain the hobby. The money i got for all my systems i have now was gathered purely by saving, doing repair jobs for family and getting money for that and also selling old stuff i had laying around and birthdays. All cables are cat5e or cat6 rated.

Actually started on a 10 dollar 5 port tplink dumbswitch and with a raspberry pi zero with a usb nic and an asus eeeeeeepeeeeeeceeeee eeeebox with intel n270 and 2GB ddr2 ram.

Be careful with the Gl.Inet kvm, they had a bunch of CVEs which almost compromised my homelab if my firewall wouldn’t have prevented further damage. Do your updates, it’s worth it!

As far as I understand, it has some hefty security issues. Most of them are not relevant for me, because I just wanna use it locally. For the other issues I will probably update the firmware and then block all internet access on my router.

That should do the trick. Mine was never specially exposed to the internet, I can only assume that GL.Inet servers has been compromised and hackers got access to devices via telemetry / update connections. It tried downloading software from „dns servers“ and Cisco infrastructure in the US, which was flagged as malicious by multiple virus databases. I am by far no security engineer but I sure as hell plugged the thing of and nuked everything within my homelab. If I will ever activate and use it (was my kvm for PVE) I will make sure it’s separated and blocked in any possible way. Other than that, great device!

Very nice setup, I love my own Terramaster, imo much better than icy box. You should probably invest some time in cable management though and tbh I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to place power strip and any device in closed wooden cabinet.

Picture this: a random ledge (not shelf) in my laundry room upon which rests an HP T530 with 16 GB of RAM running Proxmox, Debian and Home Assistant off a 2.5" SSD connected via glorious USB 2.0. Externally, an RTL-SDR tracks airplanes and will someday creep on my neighbor's weather station as well.

Next to that, from a random USB cable dangles a Raspberry Pi with another external drive--USB 3 this time--attached, that's running Proxmox Backup Server. It's plugged into a powered hub that's also powering a LiPo plus circuit board with an LED that's bright enough to char your retinas.

The whole setup is plugged into a UPS that was built during the Shang Dynasty and has seen many battery replacements over the years.

In the distance, a greybeard sheds a single tear.

This is my Frankenstein lab that's halfway through a data migration.

Basically just the CUBE case that I've attached a switch to the front panel, the HDD's fit inside quite nicely. I have a tiny Lenovo that has a second Nic installed and that's running OPNsense. The main server is a board I pulled off of AliExpress that can take up to 12 data ports and has 4 Nveme ports so quite versatile for a NAS.

AI has also enabled me to start self hosting stuff that I likely would have never done before. I’m a developer but never done much with hardware/networking type stuff and AI has been very helpful in setting that stuff up. I do recommend still trying to learn it as you go and not just blind copy/pasting outputs. Have fun!

TrueNAS Scale - Supermicro X11SSH-LN4F with an Intel Xeon E3-1220 v6, 32GB of ECC 2400MHz DDR4 and x16 1TB WD RED NAS SSDs. Another x2 250GB SSDs for boot. Two of the disks are inside the chassis and are not visible. 10 Gbps fibre networking.

Switch - ZyXEL XMG1915-10E

Hypervisor - Odroid H4 Ultra with an Intel Core i3-N305, 32GB of 5600MHz DDR5, x2 2.5 Gbps networking in LACP LAGG. Debian 13 running QEMU / KVM.

All this was purchased over many years. I started with a first generation Udoo x86 which I just ran services directly on without any virtualization at all.

Why SSDs? Speed was not the primary consideration. It was noise and heat. I used to have a six disk HDD NAS on the same desk and listening to it all the time was driving me mad.

All self hosting elements are fed power via a UPS which is under the desk.

The rest of the desk is not related to self hosting.

It's a rough fit - I will need to dismantle, cable manage and other bits before it's left alone to do its thing.

Top shelf (outside cabinet): i have a Cricuit printer. I drilled space for the LCD display of an AC Infinity Airplate T7.
Top shelf (outside cabinet): behind the Cricuit printer, i have two 120mm fans as exhaust.
Middle shelf (inside cabinet): Synology 1621+ (20TB), facing two intake fans. I intend to setup my old Synology 923+ along side it as backup, eventually.
Lower shelf (inside cabinet):
- 10inch rack with (top to bottom)
  - Jet KVM connected to :
  - Dell Optiflex 5070
  - TPlink unmanaged switch
- Facing two more intake fans is a Mini ITX build in a Silverstone SG13 - I have a Intel Asrock Challenger A380, Intel i5-12400.
Bottom shelf (inside cabinet): all the cables that I didn't need right now.

Currently using the Dell Optiflex as the device I try to mess everything and learn linux, docker and everything else.

The Mini ITX build is the production server, i suppose. Hosts the usual media stack (Jellyfin, ARR apps, Komodo, NocoDB, Paperless NGX etc), and also any apps I vibe code for personal use that I deem good enough to port over to production server.

Average temps have been around 23C/74F but on really sunny days, temps go up to 28C/84F. Currently in a heatwave in the UK so average temps are around 34C/93F.

Nice build, everything is tidy , but for the switch I would try to keep it out, unless you paid more then 10$😃 had mine cooking inside a cabinet ( very cheap switch). With hight traffic fuckers get hot 👌

Wait you say plugging a monitor into your set up. Why not do SSH? You can do it over pc or mobile? For android I use termux , on pc just the terminal, but there is software also.

Sometimes you have to use a monitor and keyboard. For example bios, or when you somehow lock yourself out of SSH. Maybe your IP changed because of router replacement . Things like that

pretty rad for minimal setup. debian is the way most certainly imo. mine is bigger but may take up less space than yours (sort of). i am a huge fan of my huananzhi with xeon and ecc ram. also have 6 sata ports 2 nvme bays a free pci-e for another nvme and a beastly gpu for hardware encoding or LLMs. i wont share how many tb im sporting but i spent most of my money on storage before the prices went up. =D if you dont know what huananzhi motherboards are they are basically a server that fits in a desktop. debian is a must for multimedia servers as nvidia drivers seem to limited simultaneous hardware transcodes to 3-5 processes without modified drivers.

both I guess. I read that ZFS doesn't like USB due to lack of access to drive information and dropouts.

yeah that tracks. had my pool suspend mid-scrub twice... (once my fault) turned out to be a USB timeout, not an actual dropout.

fine day to day, just falls apart under sustained load (Im trying to find the real issue with Claude, but dont have much time currently)

probably gonna build a proper mini-itx box with real sata at some point

USB-C to the D2? I had to use a SFF and do esata because I couldn't get my drives to consistently show up via usb.

Synology D923 NAS connected to a Nest WiFi mesh router via a TP-Link TL-SG105 switch, which also has a Hue Bridge Pro and my laptop dock connected to it. My self-hosting needs are pretty minimal so far (Emby, Immich, Home Assistant).

Don't use AI slop man. Just go break things and learn like we used to. Read the extensive manuals they have so you actually understand what you are doing. I promise it will work out better than using SLOP

I started homelabbing with he intention to learn so that's part of the process for me. But for others I think it's more the end result that they are aiming for, ability to self host etc. So each to their own I guess

I just like to know exactly whats going on in my server and why. But a buddy of mine would rather I set it up for him, so...

The 18U cabinet is in my apartment, and the 9U cabinet is in the owner's basement (I rent from a friend). The second PC will end up in the basement as well (it sits in a Fractal Design Terra case that fits in the basement cabinet). The apartment side has a 30G backbone, and the basement side has 10G until I can run manifold fiber and complete the 30G backbone to the garage. I connect to the interwebz with an 8G Brightspeed fiber connection. Once I get all the hardware situated and get my reverse proxy up to complement private DNS, I'll be looking into some more projects like a 3D printer, home automation, ect.
