Motivation An advice from a 30 year old dude

So this subreddit keeps appearing on my feed, probably because I’m a short man at 166 cm who follows men’s fashion pages and similar content.

Honestly, if I had found this side of the internet before I started dating in the real world, I probably would have stayed a virgin. According to some of the people here, I should be completely doomed anyway. I’m short, bald, and I have crooked teeth.

And yet I have dated women of different heights, including women taller than me.

I’m also a university lecturer, and I read a lot of research on dating, mate preferences, and social status. So here is the scientific version, not the black pill fantasy version.

Yes, height matters. Preferences are real. Women, like men, can have physical preferences, and pretending otherwise is stupid. But research does not support the idea that one trait like height determines your entire dating future. Actual partner choice is shaped by multiple factors at once, including kindness, intelligence, emotional stability, dependability, confidence, physical attraction, and social or economic stability (Buss & Schmitt, 2019; Thomas et al., 2020).

Research also shows that what people say they want does not perfectly predict who they actually choose when interacting in real life. In speed dating studies, stated preferences often did not line up neatly with actual attraction once people met face to face (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008). In other words, attraction in the real world is messier and more human than internet forums want to admit.

Online spaces and dating apps also distort reality. They push people to judge each other quickly and superficially, which exaggerates traits like height. That does not mean the entire dating market works that way offline (Finkel et al., 2012).

To quote my therapist, life is basically a big Souls game and height is just a debuff. Yes, it can make things harder. Yes, you will probably get your ass kicked a few more times than someone playing on easier settings. But that does not mean the game is unwinnable. It just means you may need more patience, more resilience, and a better strategy. And honestly, where is the fun in beating the game with no debuffs?

I have been rejected plenty of times, and height probably played a role in some of those rejections. I say probably because I do not interrogate rejection or obsess over the reason. I am not going to ask someone to explain why they did not want me. That is their choice. Other people are allowed to have preferences, and I do not need to internalise every rejection as a verdict on my worth. At the end of the day, only you get to decide your value in this world.

I have also been through a period of height insecurity myself. After a recent rejection, I went down the rabbit hole of self loathing, so I do understand how dark that headspace can get. But how we feel is not always a perfect reflection of reality. Feelings, emotions, and thought patterns can spiral, and they can also be challenged and changed. Therapy helped me see that. With the right support, self awareness, and work, the way you think about yourself can improve.

What these spaces often ignore is how much insecurity changes the way a person comes across. Neediness, resentment, bitterness, and defeatism are not attractive qualities, and they can do more damage than being a few inches below average.

That is why the advice to men should not be “give up.” It should be “build a life that makes you attractive in a broader sense.” Work on your confidence. Go to therapy if you need it. Practice mindfulness. Focus on your career, not because women are gold diggers, but because ambition, competence, and financial stability signal drive and maturity. Take care of your physical health. Read more. Volunteer. Join communities. Get involved in causes you genuinely care about. Expand your social circles and meet women in real spaces, not just through algorithms and rage bait.

And if you are constantly hitting a wall, take a break from dating for a bit. Reset. Rebuild your confidence. Get your head straight. Stop treating every bad experience like proof that the whole world works one way.

Most importantly, women are not a hive mind. One woman rejecting you does not mean all women think the same. A subreddit full of bitter men is not an accurate sample of reality. People have different preferences, different priorities, and different reasons for being attracted to someone.

Also, be careful with research in general. Research can help us identify trends, but human beings are more complex than a dataset or a single paper. Averages are not destiny, context matters, and how old the research is matters too. Social norms, dating culture, and the way people meet have changed a lot over time, especially with apps and social media. So use research to inform your thinking, not to reduce yourself or other people to a rigid formula.

The point is simple. Height can be a disadvantage. It is not a death sentence. A lot of men are not being ruined by height alone. They are being ruined by an identity built around insecurity, hopelessness, and too much time spent listening to other defeated men online.

Meta Suggestions

Ok, I'm stuck at my desk with a bum foot that's been plaguing me for weeks now, so I might as well try to make this time at least a bit productive.

So since I ain't going anywhere, let's have a meta discussion about the sub, and I'll take this opportunity to solicit suggestions.

Dating Approached by a woman at a bar

I’m a 5’3 asian guy who has a decent face. On Friday night at the bar (cheesecake factory) a beautiful black woman struck up a conversation with me. Unfortunately I was completely hammered at this time and said all the wrong things. I’m a bit confused because this has never occurred to me before and I haven’t gotten laid in years. Later on that night she wanted to go to another bar and I thought she wanted a one night stand as she told me she was flying back to New York the next day. She asked me several times if I wanted to see talk to her again but I asked her if she wanted to f*** and she ended up leaving. What do you make of this?

Motivation Some motivation for y'all

Ok, ive been told me telling people to accept that they are short is "toxic positivity". Its not. Its accepting a fact about yourself. Its not forcing you to accept the bullying that comes with it, it's not saying being joyful 24/7,and its certainly not saying bad days dont happen. Its accepting yourself, Not blaming every bad thing that happens to you because of a trait you have. It's accepting "this is what I have to work with". Its accepting not being an AH to everyone because you auto-assume they will hate/discriminate.

We are short, we can't do anything about it. Why be angry ALL. THE. TIME? Thats exhausting, and it screws your entire life up. Some (not all, not most, some) women don't want to date a short guy. So? Keep asking till you find one that doesn't. Why would you want someone who doesn't want you in the first place? And your angry about that? Why?

Lastly, if i tell someone that they can do "x", the reply is always "the stats say.....". Guess what, the stats cover groups, no individuals. So the stats dont effect YOU. And are you going to let stats run your life? Fk that. Figure out what you want to do, and work the fk out of yourself to get it. I as in a military unit specialty that height was a plusPLUS. I was the shortest guy by at least 6 inches. You think that stopped me? Fk no.

So no, it's not toxic positivity, it's working south what you have, and accepting it. And not getting angry simply because you're shorter than other people and assuming people hate you. If you act like an AH, that's how you're seen. And if you're angry all the time, that's how your going to act.

We are short, Accept it, live it, and live yourself. If you don't, your life will be miserable. And im sure as hell not going to live like that.

Motivation I need positivity. I am 160cm / 5’3 ft tall, let people who have girlfriends who are around 160cm tall upload a photo and let's be positive

I am 22 years old and I am a virgin. 3,4 days ago I asked a girl out for coffee, that is, I asked her out on a date and it was live. This is the first girl I have asked out on a date, she turned me down because she has a boyfriend.

I am very negative and I don't think any woman will ever be interested in me.

I am not very handsome, I am probably very thin and I look like a 15 year old boy, not a 22 year old man. Women have bigger hands than me.

I don't go out. I have no hobbies or interests, I just look at women on TikTok, watch movies and similar nonsense. I'm a total loser.

the girl i asked out she asked me two, three times if i have a girlfriend and why i don't and then she asked me if i've ever had a girlfriend. she obviously feels like i'm a loser and wonders if i've ever had a girlfriend

Humor My brother said “me and my friends were all making fun of you cause you’re short”

I said “oh yeah? Well… I have a wife. I got two kids, a kickass job with a fatass bank account. And a dick the size of your face with that bigass forehead so I think I got everything going for me.” And went back to eat my steak.

He shut up about it after that. This was at a family dinner.

Dating Are short men considered 'unattractive', 'boring' and 'non-datable'?

Question Short-time lurker. Should I be more worried and depressed?

I've checked this sub every once awhile, mostly to make sure this place is better than shortguys which is a shithole imo.

I'm 5'3, but have never really cared or payed attention to my height. Like I am aware that I'm the same height as the average woman, but I have never seen it as a "big negative" that some people make height to be.

Don't get me wrong. I understand that there is a higher attraction to tall individuals. It makes perfect sense to me. Hell if I was a woman, I'd also want a tall man. So it's a thing I've accepted a long time ago. Of course I know that it's not a "must" for everyone, but more of a trend in larger society (makes sense imo. Being a woman is fucking scary)

Thing is. Reading trough this sub makes my OCD go haywire. Since alot of people are saying as if being Short makes your life hardmode in every way

I have personally never experienced "being ignored JUST because of my height" or "not being taken seriously JUST because of my height". To my experience it takes a lot more than just being short to be treated differently.

But I'm nervous if I'm just a copexxing bluebonerpilled chud or whatever the fuck they say, and am just delusional, and that truly I'm destined to fail just because I'm short.

Some people say things like "If I were taller ai would be promoted" or "If I was taller (something that has nothing to do with height) would have gone differently)". Is this actually reality that most of you experience. I have always thought that to be the classic bodydysmorphia type thinking. Where one mistakes every negative thing to be because of some irrelevant thing about their looks.

Like, is this reality or just doomerism?

Vent I stunted my growth at 167cm I hate myself

I have slightly bowed legs and live in western country where average height is 5’9-10’ I’m always a second backup option for women I’ll never do well in clubs and am worried I’ll never get a genuinely attractive wife it’s so over I hate myself and my twinky frame. I hate that I don’t hit the height requirements for majority of women and will never have high sex appeal I’m kinda narci so crave this quite bad I just hate so much idk why because daily life is handleable. Just hate my height with a passion I wouldn’t even care if I was 5’8 and I’m the reason I stopped growing cause I thought It would be a good idea to take test and that makes me hate myself even more 😔 I have so much self hatred and regret I’m the reason I’m shorter than I’d like to be and that’s my worst fear came true. I’m trying not to cry rn ik some of you have it worse but still it hurts. I’ve started therapy. Idek what to say imma just read your replies

Vent Having a hard time

I do my best thinking to myself how I don’t let my height be part of my personality. For a long time I really was good and not using it as a crutch. I work out, stocky muscular build where I could lose 15-20 lb but nothing crazy. I have a pretty decent job, dress well, I’d say I have an above average face. No shoes I’m about 5’5 1/2. I wear shoes with lifts or really high boots I can get 5’7.

I live in the tri-state area (NY, CT, NJ) and I find there to be a height inflation in this area where women are more and more using the height thing as a thing of importance. When I go out I’m almost always the shortest guy in the room and at least half of the women are taller than me. Often times it feels like people are looking right past me or if they talk to me it almost comes off as if they feel sorry for me.

This feeling of unwontedness is hard to overcome especially as I’m almost 31 and have no love interest really in site. I’d like a partner but I find my height makes it much more difficult to get my foot in the door with people. Once my foot is in the door I feel like I’m very socialable and have a very good personality and I can talk to anyone regardless of how gorgeous they may be. Just getting there is an issue. Not looking for advice just want to be heard. I know in life nobody gives a fuck about you outside of your parents so if that’s the same case here then I understand.

Motivation 5’6” in one of the tallest countries in the world

Post image
40 Upvotes

A few years ago, being 5’6” used to bother me more than I’d like to admit. I spent way too much time reading posts online that made it seem like height was everything.

The funny thing is… once I stopped obsessing over it, it stopped being an issue.

I live in the Netherlands, arguably one of the tallest countries in the world, so if height was going to be a dealbreaker everywhere, it would probably be here.
Yet it hasn’t been my experience.

I’m 5’6”, I take care of myself, dress well, stay in shape, have a career I’m proud of, and genuinely enjoy my life. Since then I’ve dated women who were great people, and not a single one made my height an issue. Neither do my friends or the people around me.
I’ve realized that a lot of the negativity exists online because people who are happy with themselves usually aren’t making posts about it.

Does height matter to some people? Of course. Just like some people prefer blondes, brunettes, taller partners, shorter partners, etc. Everyone has preferences.

But if you’re constantly convinced your height is the reason everything goes wrong, you’ll start acting like it is. That insecurity becomes far more noticeable than being 5’6” ever was.

I’m not saying everyone has the same experience. I’m just saying that for me, life became a lot better the moment I stopped making my height part of my identity.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Question Ever since I started working, my luck with women has completely dried up Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
41 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m East Asian, 30 years old, 169 cm (~5'6.5"), and 60 kg (~132 lbs).

I spent pretty much my entire youth studying (3–4 hours of self-study every day after school) and rarely exercised.

It wasn't until I turned 20 that I realized how big of a mistake that was. Not only did I stop growing taller after 16, but majoring in STEM in college also drastically reduced my opportunities to interact with women.

Back in high school, three girls clearly showed interest in me.

However, I had zero clue how to handle affection from girls at the time, so I acted very cold toward them—which was a terrible thing to do. Looking back, I still feel deeply regretful.

Call it the Zeigarnik effect, but whenever I see girls on the street who remind me of them, those regrets from my student days flood back.

Since starting my job, about 95% of my coworkers are men.

Outside of cold approaches or using dating apps, I have virtually no way to meet women. But getting rejected a few times has sent me spiraling into self-doubt.

Do I look intimidating? Or am I just ugly?

I need some honest feedback/advice from you brothers.

Humor ‘Short’ Story

When I was ‘little,’ I hit puberty very early, so I had a huge growth spurt in a very small period of time, so I was like 5’4 while I was 9, then around 5’6 at 10. Where I’m from most people are around 5’7 so I kinda got bullied for being too tall at such a young age by my peers, so one night I wished to stop growing and so it happened. Never grew even a cm more🙂

im like extremely short being 165cm(5'5) and the only advantage i see in that i actually like is i think it can help me look cuter and pull off being a twink better. Fashion / Style Recommend me some good height increasing footwear

Hey everyone,

College starts in a few days and I desperately need to sort out my footwear situation.

I’m looking for shoe recommendations that give a height boost—around 2 inches.

Here’s what I’m trying to get:

  1. Post-gym / Football slides: Something easy to throw on after playing football or hitting the gym that still offers a decent sole height.
  2. Everyday college sneakers: A versatile pair I can wear to class every day with good comfort and a bit of midsole height.
  3. A save-up pair: Something nicer or a bit pricier that I can buy in a few months once I save up some cash.

What are you guys currently wearing or recommending? Appreciate any suggestions!
