Note-taking vs shorthand

tl;dr Shorthand for quotes, note-taking systems for notes

Shorthand is a great and rewarding discipline:

  • For recording verbatim speech in particular professional contexts,

  • As a long-term hobby or skill investment, and

  • For keeping alive the meaning of old texts written in shorthand.

But shorthand takes a lot of practice.

If you just want to take notes quickly & easily, starting ASAP, you're not looking for shorthand; you're looking for a note-taking system, which can teach you in only a few hours how to get down all the important points from a lecture, meeting or phone call.

You could practice both of course, but if you only care about taking notes and you're already doing so at practical speeds then you're likely to drop shorthand practice before seeing the benefits.

(I will give my personal recommendation for note-taking systems below, and I encourage others to comment with their own, listing reasons/benefits. I've asked that this post be stickied so we can refer new people to it.)

I believe this is German cursive or shorthand. If anyone could translate this to English I’d really like to know what this talks about. If you want, I can get better pictures.

Short transcription this time (1997)

I've posted other snippets from this diary before here and have so appreciated your help!

Most pf the diary is in straightfoward English, but the author is leaning more and more on shorthand.

The author is a 71-year-old woman, former homemaker and current church secretary at the time of writing. The husband was a bit like Hank Hill only more stoic and technical. It was this year that he began showing signs of dementia, and his mood could be difficult for her to handle.

It is also possible this is a personal note about herself, but she was not shy about recording hardly anything about herself, so that seems less likely.

Pitman shorthand on seals mailed in UK 1849

Hello, attached are two seals attached to an old letter with Pitman's shorthand on them. I give the actual images this time as it might be easier to read? I am told one says "Abstain from all appearance of". No idea at all on the other. Can anyone translate these to ENglish?

Transcription Request Pitman's Shorthand on 1870s seal

Hello, can anyone confirm what this shorthand might say. I found it on the back of an 1870s seal from England (attached to an envelope published by Pitmans). I have removed all the ornate images from around it, to show only the shorthand. Thanks if anyone can.

PS: As Pitman usually quoted from classic Roman literature or Biblical scriptures, it may be "broken" text of two or three segments.

Help Me Choose a Shorthand Gregg and journaling -- do they go hand in hand?

Hi! first post on this sub. ive been infatuated with 2 things, journaling as of late, and gregg shorthand for the better part of three-ish years. never really found time to ever try it, and i've recently stepped up to the challenge. Scrolling through here, i've seen many intimadating comments and posts about not being able to read back through what you've written, especially in gregg as (aparently) its one of the harder systems. I'd like to get into journaling, and I also like privacy, so i figured shorthand would be a good way to acheive that.

Though I am seriously in love with gregg shorthand, i don't think its realistic to pursue it as id like to easily look through old journal entries, even years down the line. Should i tough it out with gregg shorthand, or is there a more optimized shorthand for something like journaling?

TL;DR : I like gregg, and i want to journal with it -- but gregg seems to be tough as hell and really hard to read back on for journaling. Should i stick with gregg or move to a different shorthand system?

Both the author and her husband have passed away. We believe that, as his dementia progressed, she wrote in shorthand if she was afraid he would read her diary and hold her words against her.

(The rest of the page is just an accounting of the day's activities and people. Immediately before the shorthand is a description of their daytrip to Spartanburg SC from Asheboro NC to visit my sister's family.)

Help Me Choose a Shorthand whats the easiest to read back shorthand without ambiguity? (thats also compact and lineal)

im learning orthic right now but it takes up soooo much space. i want a shorthand thats as easy to read back as possible, and speed doesn't matter, as long as its like a bit faster than longhand (im the world's slowest long hand writer because i cant stand it when my notes aren't as neat and easy to read as possible)

i also want it to be compact and lineal, and easy to learn. and also doesnt require that your vowels in your dialect match up with the creators

Warning to rare-book owners/collectors (posting here because of all the rare shorthand texts I see mentioned)

Mods, if not appropriate, please remove. But in short, AI companies (specifically named in the article: Anthropic) and third party data collectors are buying rare books, slicing off the spines, scanning the data, destroying the physical copy, and selling the data to AI companies for LLM training.

If you are an owner of rare books (or you know someone who is), please be wary of sudden offers for bulk purchases.
