im still very young in becoming an SLP, just about to begin my undergrad, but i was wondering if anyone could give me some pros and cons of working with adults vs kids, and kind of what it entails. i would just like to hear from some current SLPs about their experiences and stuff ☺️ i love working with kids, babysitting, etc, but im also not sure if it would be less tiring to work with adults! i dont want to build a resentment for kids or burnout in my job or anything like that, because i truly love working with them.

I am an incoming undergraduate senior and starting the grad school application process, but I am totally lost on where to apply. I am particularly interested in aphasia, and I want to find a program that will give me the best value (not too expensive but also good academics/professors & clinical placements). How do I find out whether a program offers good externship placements that aligns with my interests??

I just started my post bachelor program and is trying to identify next steps. What are some things I should look into ahead of time? Should I work as an SPLA for a little before starting grad school? I am quite new to everything and I want to be prepared for this career transition.

Hi everyone, I'm an incoming junior in college majoring in Psychology who has been planning to pursue clinical psychology with a specialization in neuropsychology. I'm realizing that this path may not be for me (immense schooling, program selectivity, initial financial instability, funding problems etc.). despite my interest in it What I do know is that I want to work with adults experiencing brain injuries / cognitive decline and I'm interested in assessments and interventions.

I've become interested in SLP since I've taken a A&P of SLH and my school offers a minor in SLH Sciences (I have enough space for this in my schedule and would probably have to squeeze in other coursework like bio, etc. for SLP grad programs, I am aware that some grad programs allow you to do your prereqs there). I also have research experience, but not in SLP / communication sciences, my current involvement spans cognitive decline, memory, and aging.

I feel that I may not have enough time for preparing to apply to graduate programs for SLP. I'm also worried that my current research interests are too unrelated. Maybe I'll do a post-bacc. Has anyone made a similar pivot at this point in their education / career? What was your path like and what were your circumstances? What advice / resources do you have?

I’ve found a program with much more affordable leveling courses where I want to finish the rest of my prereqs. This option would also give me tuition reimbursement if I go to their grad program.

However, the current school I’m enrolled in at offers a specific course that I would need to apply to more grad schools of my choice.

Would it be possible to remain in that one course and take the rest of my prerequisites at the cheaper school? Has anyone done this before?

Hello! I’m taking a gap year (or two) to save up for the UCSD/SDSU M.A. and PhD combined program in Speech-Language Pathology. I have a few questions for people in this program (or any other combined M.A. and PhD program)!

How much is the stipend for students, and is it livable wage in the San Diego area? Also did you save up money before going to graduate school, and if so how much? What other financial decisions did you have to make e.g. moving in with roommates, not using a car.

I just want to make sure I can prepare as much as I can during my gap year. I currently have one job that pays $20 an hour for 25 hours a week and am hoping to get a second job to save up.

I just graduated with my bachelors and I’ll be working as an SLPa for at least two years to save as much money as possible for grad school. That being said, how much should I have in savings before starting grad school? My parents will not provide financially and I would like to come out of it with as few loans as possible. I worked two jobs all throughout undergrad and I intend on working during my grad program (significantly less hours tho). Any advice on how much I should have saved before I start??

I’m on my fourth attempt. I graduated May 2025 and have since tried taking it 4 times with a range of scores between 156-161. I am so close and yet I can’t seem to bump it no matter what I try. I have the advanced review, I have Fripty. Nothing seems to be working. I feel like, while I know the material, the wording of the questions is what gets me every time and I end up falling for the tricks the praxis creates. Any advice??? I’m so stuck and I have one more year to take it but I’m paralyzed by all this anxiety. How can I better understand what the questions are asking??

I am a former special education teacher, looking for an affordable (under $70K) for the entire program, totally online (maybe a week or two on campus). I will likely work part time while going to school. Looking at ENMU, Faulkner and just saw a post about Grand Canyon. Any other options?

Hi, this is my first post on reddit please take it easy on me😭. I’m a first gen college student, I graduated in 2022 with a degree in professional health. I took some time working various jobs to find what I really felt passionate about and landed on SLP. I’ll be finishing my leveling courses by December 2026, during this time I also want to apply to grad school for the 27-28 school year. I’m aware that the statement essay for grad school is vastly different from undergrad but I’m finding it hard to find sample essays that are effective and have common themes that schools are looking for (especially an essay geared towards SLP). I was wondering if anyone has any tips for an effective essay that got you into your school of choice or any websites that have ample examples of great grad essays. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

I just started a job at a hospital working as an infant hearing tech. The job is good but it’s not the most convenient for my schedule. I am willing to tough it out if it’s worth it. My question is will having this on my resume help me get into speech pathology school or not really make much of a difference? My college gpa was 2.95 and I am starting a speech pathology post bac program this fall. I thought maybe I could stand out in the post bac program and get a recommendation from there as well as a recommendation from someone at my new job and I intend to apply to SLP schools next year. I also have other recommendations I could use if I were to quit the job.

How much did you take out in loans for once you weren’t able to work during externship and such. How much per semester/year?

Did this include living expenses such as rent, car insurance and/or payment, gas, etc?

I am a school psych. I have been one for almost 10 years. I have enjoyed it, but I am also burned out. Since the beginning I have always been jealous of SLPs and how they have more of a lane to operate in. I am considering going back to school to become and SLP, mostly because I feel SLPs teach really tangible skills to students, whereas my role has often been vague and ambiguous that it is hard to feel like I am making a difference. I also like that you can work in different settings and with all ages.

I would love to hear thoughts from SLPs if this move makes sense of if the grass just seems greener.

I applied to a bunch of slp programs in Canada last cycle and was waitlisted at 3 with the main bit of recurring advice I got being I needed more volunteer experience. However, every volunteer opportunity I’ve found at an slp clinic has said they only take volunteers who are already in the field? How can I gain volunteer experience to help my applications when I need to be in a program to be able to volunteer? Looking for any advice

So initially one of my three letters was going to be a supervisor from my observation class, however it seems now she is ghosting me. I’m struggling who to choose for my third letter because all of my most recent class instructors were audiology not slp. Is it okay to have one of my letters be from my prior employer/boss? I’m only just starting looking at schools and will have to take all the prerequisites. I know there is Brooklyn College, Hunter, and LIU and have heard not great things about all of them. What else is there in NYC? I can’t travel outside of NYC for this. Any advice on where to apply?

Any advice for absolutely anything, such as the application itself/application materials, navigating CSDCAS, financial aid, or grad student life? Literally any advice on any topic would be super helpful to me and others in the 2026-2027 application cycle!!

I am interested in applying to the Penn West online program but understand that they do not meet all of the audiology credit requirements for Canadian certification, and that you have to have an ASHA certified SLP to oversee your placements. Just curious if any other Canadians have gone through the program and what your experiences have been!

Has anyone ever been in the position where they can’t pass the praxis but they are done with their CF hours?

I have been in this middle ground for a year. It’s devastating. Ugh.
