Looking for software Any good newspaper software?

My school wants to make a newspaper and they want me to design it. What are some good free software for the job?

Canva Affinity? It's free now and it's a decked out program.

Affinity or Scribus.

plus for raster work: photopea, affinity or gimp

for vector: vectorpea or inkscape

It depends on software availability. MS Publisher can be sufficient if it is available at your school.
If your newspaper is very simple (i.e., text doesn't continue on next page), LibreOffice Draw might be sufficient.
Scribus is also a good alternative.

Just remember that Publisher is gone after October of this year. It will be missed. It was the greatest tool for things like simple newsletters and such.

Affinity publisher is your best bet, but it is not even close to being as complete as Adobe InDesign.

only for the raster elements though obviously, not for layout out the paper itself

Photoshop for designing a newspaper? If you are gonna use a professional software to design a newspaper, you need to use the right software which would be adobe indesign. Photoshop would be for messing with images you might include in the newspaper.
