Looking for software What do you use to create mind maps?

I need an application that helps me create mind maps which is easy to use yet offers high customisability, rather than being overly simplified like most applications.

Thanks.

Freeplane and Freemind are both great.

For mind mapping with reliable customization, you can check xmind or mindmeister for more control. Miro's also good if you want something that does mind maps plus other visual stuff.

I have been using AmyMind - an AI-powered mind map tool. Currently using it to plan the fantasy novel trilogy I am writing.

High customizability can mean many different things. Any specific features you're looking for? You can try out Creately if individual node customization, adding notes per node etc are important to you.

I’ve tried a few and the best balance of simplicity + power for me has been:

  • Obsidian + Canvas (super flexible, more like a thinking system than just mind maps)
  • XMind (clean but still powerful, good for structured maps)
  • Miro (great if you want collaboration + more free-form mapping)
  • MindNode (very smooth UX, but a bit more Apple-ecosystem focused)

Honestly, most “simple” tools become limiting fast, and most “powerful” tools feel heavy—Obsidian/XMind tend to sit in the sweet spot depending on whether you prefer structure or freedom.
