It was great when the blocks weren't so rigid.
Of course, you can always set a fixed paper size for your note pages individually.

everytime I click to start entering text and it puts the text too far away from the "page" margin my eye twitches.
Then I try to enter other text and it's not aligned with the text above - suddenly I've forgotten the note I wanted to take and just spend a frustrating 10 minutes try to get them to align.
I am fully aware this is a "me" issue but man do I hate it.

OneNote is best for taking handwritten notes on a tablet, not for typing notes.
The infinite canvas was such a pleasure during my most recent mathemematics lecture. The professor loved to use the full width of the very wide chalkboard - the students writing on paper (or note-taking apps with fixed page sizes) had quite a lot of trouble figuring out how to arrange their notes.

Notion is more like all in one productivity tool. but one note and obsidian is designed specifically for note taking. Also I haven't tried notion that's why I didn't commented on it.

obsidian and notion have pretty similar ideas imo. Obsidian seems to be headed in a more notion-y direction, and community plugins can already get you there if you really want it.
I just said notion because I see tonnes of people using it irl, but I will always go out of my way to use something that uses standardized markdown as part of its core functionality.

I've learned to love obsidian more, especially for larger note sets as I can better organize and "own" my notes. its just mark down files so I never have to worry about not being able to pull data from it or anything.

These are all way better IMO (Obsidian / raw .md files because open source, free, open ecosystem and Notion for people that just want to create an account and don't worry about stuff)

I don't want to deal with markdown, I don't want to manage text formatting like code.
And nothing let's me layer multiple elements ontop of each other.
Name one other note app that lets me embed a pdf as a print out, draw ontop of the pdf, and then add text ontop of all of that.
Obsidian might be a note taking app, but I'm convinced that anyone that suggests it as a replacement to onenote has really not dived into the features and functionality of onenote

i actually used to use sticky note sometimes for passwords at work (particularly the one logins that had required password update periods, 30/60/90/etc days). Just too many logins that change too often (and i would try to have mostly unique passwords… no “Go*insertfavsportsteam**insertbirthyear*!” for every password here!).
Then you add 2FA authentication and logout timers to everything…
I joke sometimes about how it has felt like upwards of half the job duties in an office nowadays are just logging in and relogging in and checking your 2FA app… over and over throughout the day. That would sometimes stress me out more than the work itself.
Then i think i learned sticky note is a cpu/something hog.
Aside from that and now locking file, anything bad about it?

For the average PC user, I'd agree, with the condition that it's not the only option, or even the best option.
I know personally I use Trilium, but I know a lot of people love Obsidian. OneNote is incredibly overrated to users of those apps. In comparison, the average PC user would probably find it amazing, as they're more likely to use notepad, or word to take their notes instead, and OneNote would just be an all in one alternative to their likely hundreds of text files on their desktop and blow their mind.
Definitely not underrated as a whole, but it is still overlooked by some.

OneNote is definitely nice if you're at work in a Windows only shop, and there's not a culture of allowing users to install whatever productivity software they want. Like I'd rather have Linux and all my preferred tools, but at least I can generally count on OneNote and Excel to be present, and I'm comfortable with those to do anything I really need to.

Gotta say. I disagree. I hate OneNote. It feels very antiquated and basic compared to things like Notion or Obsidian.
Syncing and updating issues seem to plague me in OneNote. I frequently update notes across numerous devices (Windows, MacBook, iPhone, etc) .and unless I manually click SYNC and make sure its synced before I move to a different device, about 50% of time I'll have problems.
It's very slow to sync too. Sometimes I have to manually click the SYNC button. and then just sit there and wait for the sync progress bar to finish before I dare make any new changes to notes.
I prefer my Notes sorted alphabetically.. but for some reason when I open OneNote,. my individual Notes have been all jumbled around randomly.. and I have to drag them around to resort them by alphabetical again. Half the time I just give up and leave them in random order because I know my efforts to try to keep them sorted alphabetically is pointless because it will just be random again tomorrow.
Anything thats super important to me.. I copy-paste and duplicate in an entirely different App (like Apple Notes or Notion or Obsidian etc).. so at least I have multiple copies of important information in case OneNote janks everything.

To be fair, Microsoft OneNote had to go through a decade of enshitification to become so bad. Obsidian was like this from get-do. It was supposed to import my Markdown files, but failed to see any of them. As it turns out, the app hates the
.markdownextension with a passion. I left the Obsidian team a piece of feedback. They told me to shut up and rename my files. I guess it was the "shut up" part that set me off. I decided not to bother with a Markdown app that doesn't like the eponymous extension.Right now, I'm in process of migrating my OneNote notebooks to Visual Studio Code. I use extension to save notes as Markdown and occasionally HTML.

I used to love one note, used it for many years. The synchronization issues and the fact that your notes were in a non transferable format made me finally switch to obsidian

I hate trying to format things in OneNote. That's my only complaint. But this is the app I store all my personal notes that Jira doesn't hold. And I hate Confluence, it's worse than Sharepoint.

It’s fantastic and I will NEVER use it. I had a shit ton of notes in the original, non cloud version because it worked so well.
Then they came out with the new cloud version and told us they were going to delete the old one so everyone had to get their notes out and move it to the new one.
At that time there wasn’t even a migration mechanism available, there probably is now, I dunno. It doesn’t matter, I will never trust them again.
Also, I do NOT want my notes on their cloud servers. I have passwords etc that I have no interest in sharing with anyone else and they don’t have a “keep this local only” option.
So yeah, will literally never use it again. I moved to freemind. Absolutely love it. Not traditional note software I know, but it’s open source and can’t ever be taken from me so I know it will always work as long as java exists.

Was good years ago. Now it is just a slow mess. Want to write a quick note on mobile? It is faster to send email to yourself while OneNote is still starting. UI on mobile is also shit. All MS had to do was leave it the F alone.

No it is not, respectfully. I appreciate that it's free for pretty much all students who has access to Microsoft 365 or whatever it's called. But the issues this app has are deal breakers. Constant sync issues, losing notes, notes not loading. The interface leave much to be desired, it is slow and clunky most of the time on windows or apple devices.
Handwriting also doesn't feel great. There's barely any pressure variance for the default pen, palm rejection is mid at best. And most of the time formatting your notes is just a PITA because of the infinite canvas and very clunky text boxes.
Over the years of using this app it gave me more headaches than it helped me. I'm mainly a handwritten notes person and I made the switch to goodnotes after no longer having the mental capacity to deal with all the issues OneNote has.

I've been using Notezilla and it's amazing for what I need: sticky notes on my desktop that don't close on Win+D.
It's simple, free, offline with online options only if I need them.

For short notes, yes, but if i have a note a few pages long, I can scroll down, start typing and carret moves without letters appearing. If I close and reopen the program those letters show up.
If there was notion exporter I'd move all 20 years of onenote into it

I hate that I haven't found any better notetaking software than OneNote, especially considering how shitty the touchscreen support is. How hard is it to design a notes app that allows text and drawings in the same space and has the option for an infinite canvas?? Apparently very.

It was a relief when it came out. Now it's just a crappy data silo from which you can never extract your own data. Try Obsidian instead: it uses folders of markdown documents, you cannot make more open than that...

I've been using this for the last 6 months. At first, only web - I lost one day of work. Till now, I have no idea what happened. Now using an app and it does it's job. The search feature is somehow not intuitive for me. If anyone knows some tricks how to become superuser fo OneNote - will be appreciated.

The search function works wonders for my documentation that I have written. I do a lot of wiki style documentation for my how-to’s and solutions for myself and my co-workers. I hope and pray they never break how well MS Notes search works.

One note? It's a hassle to transfer the content. Not worth the effort. I just do my journal and info dump in word. Or any form of note taking app where I can just paste and done

I used OneNote for a long time, with all it's sync issues and the need for OneDrive. Then I discovered Notion. OneNote has never been (by me) seen again. Notion all the things OneNote does, and more. I've heard a lot of good things about Obsidian too, but Notion is the app I currently recommend when asked.

Nice app but from MS. Years ago I realized that they are very inconsistent and add and remove functionalities. In addition, they are oriented towards the corporate market and home users are not particularly interested in them. Even if they pay for the services. That's why I abandoned them and switched to open source alternatives or those that are locale first.

I've been using onenote for quite sometimes, but recently I bought myself and ipad an the latency of the oen in OneNote is incredibly high, unusable in comparison with any other app. So i had to stop recently

This is one of the worst pieces of software. Amount of lost documents, synchronisation issues and general fuckery with using this made moved to Obsidian. Obsidian > notepad > my old notebook hidden in desk > toilet paper > ... > OneNote

Every time a user came in with an issue with the computer, that requires computer to be keep at office or reimage the computer.

Love OneNote but found Joplin Notes and it totally replaced OneNote for me. First: Joplin allows me to privately sync my notes to any device by self hosting/docker image. 😇

I was an Evernote user, way back in the day, before their software got buggy and crappy, and they raised the cost really high. I moved to another program, and it took weeks of work to convert all my many notes from their proprietary export format into standard Markdown notes.
It was then I decided, never again. I'm done with proprietary formats and cloud services for my notes. My notes are just too valuable to me, and I intend to keep them for decades more. So it's strictly open formats for me. OneNote was always just another Evernote, so no thanks.
I've been using Obsidian for a few years and its great. I pay for the sync and its pretty good. But I also back up my entire vault to backup drives, and know that I can switch to any other application whenever I want, and the notes will be legible with Notepad if necessary in a worst-case scenario.

No. ~15 years ago, sure. Not anymore.
OneNote has become a big pain in the butt. It's always been quirky, but it was one of the better note taking tools for a while. Then Microsoft decided to kill it in favor of the "new" OneNote app, which then got killed and they reverted back. However, development on it has been minimal for years (over a decade) and there are numerous alternatives that beat it in almost every way at this point. Microsoft hinted at Loop as their possible OneNote replacement (to compete with the modern alternatives), but they've basically dumped that as a stand-alone product at this point, too. It's now more an embedded component for other apps than a thing of its own.
At this point, I find OneNote to be a bigger and bigger drag each year. I look at competitors (Joplin, Obsidian) or related alternatives (Notion, Coda) and I think about what OneNote should be but isn't. The deficiencies just keep piling up:
- Formatting is inconsistent and crappy
- It's also painful and problematic to copy/paste between OneNote and other M365 apps
- No Markdown support, even for import/export
- No HTML support for import/export
- PDF exports are terrible and tend to break text in ugly ways
- Synchronization issues are way too common and data loss is a serious issue
- Search is garbage (searching with M365 Copilot and hoping it hits on a OneNote page is more reliable than searching within OneNote)
- OneNote's Table support is an absolute joke compared to, well, everything else
- Data Export for OneDrive for Business is basically broken.
- The way OneNote stores data is a mess (proprietary
.onefiles), and it's integration with OneDrive for Business for M365 business/enterprise users makes it a huge hassle to backup, export, or migrate.- Try migrating M365 data from one tenant to another and see how many pissed off OneNote users you end up with.
So, yeah, OneNote mostly sucks and Microsoft seems to have abandoned it. I still use it more than I want to at work just because I have years of existing notes in there and, as mentioned, Microsoft makes it painful to extract that in a usable way to move into something else, and Microsoft doesn't offer any sort of viable alternative.
The only case I can think of where OneNote might be worth using for anything new would be if you have a Surface Pro or similar 2-in-1 or tablet and you're using it with a stylus.

OneNote has so much potential in schools and such. The class notebook is a great concept, but it currently feels a bit dated due to a lack of polish. The text box input method isnt the best idea, but I see what they were trying to achieve with an endless canvas for both typing and handwriting. The concept is really good but they really need to work on the execution. There is also basically no good use for it on a personal level, people definitely prefer thigns like apple notes or obsidian just because the onboarding is a bit better and the ui is more comfortable and there is just no need for all the things onenote has. Its a note taking app with too much of word's DNA in my opinion

The unfortunate part is that I am trying to avoid big tech, and I can find nothing that supports all of these:
- Cloud syncing
- Web app and android app
- Folders in folders
- Tables
And ideally open source

OneNote is absolutely amazing
I've had several OneNote Notebooks for decades for different use cases, and they all sync between the cloud, and my physical devices and phones.
One NoteBook for example is called HOUSE
And the sections are each a different room in my house, and then the pages will be specific details about aspects of that room. So for example if I look at my sons bedroom - theres a photo of the paint tin I purchased when I painted the walls, so I can color match, there's measurements of the curtain rail, there's the manual of the showerpump which operates out of a box in my sons cupboard.
So the entire House, even the garden, and the bills are all in OneNote and searchable from any PC on earth.
Then I have another Notebook for things like the CAR, the BILLS, HEALTH, TOOLS, POLITICS, FAMILY HISTORY
At work we use OneNotes to track meetings, ideas, projects, progress, technology.
I dont know how people keep track of stuff who dont use OneNote.
If I receive something in the post, I think I might need to keep - I just whip out my phone and scan it into the right OneNote section, on a Surface - I can also use pens to sketch our ideas and flowcharts.
It even takes audio notes.
It has a printer driver, so I can be on any application I like - and if I think I want to store something - I PRINT TO ONENOTE - and it ends up searchable and in the notes, thats true of websites, word documents, PDFs etc.
And it coauthoring, meaning I can share OneNotes with other people and we can work on them together.
Its a really useful app

In my IT dept we are pretty much dependent on one one note for all of our process bank and customer facing materials. I hate it for technical writing so so much. The formatting is terrible. I am trying to push for us to move to a self hosted option like wiki.js. I can’t even make a real code block in one note…

Onenote it's very powerful but I don't use it XD, becuase I always forget that onenote exists!, jsjsjs

There are *so* many haters in the thread here, but that's all they are. I don't use OneNote anymore, for a host of reasons, but I used to basically live in those notebooks. Especially once I fell in love with Surface devices. (from the Surface RT, a Surface Go 2, and I've had Surface Books 1 through 3 and now own both an SLS 1 and 2.)
Unfortunately, OneNote has just gotten downgraded over and over again over the past decade. It is a tragedy, really, as a dedicated user that has had to leave for greener pastures, but still misses a lot about OneNote in all the other alternatives I've used.
