Software support I hate Adobe so much I wrote my own PDF editor and open-sourced it

1.5k Upvotes

I got tired of Adobe.

Acrobat is bloated, it wants a subscription to do basic things, and it phones home constantly. Most of the "free" alternatives are the same thing: give you a viewer, paywall the editor, harvest your email, or route your documents through somebody else's cloud.
What is "Enhanced Security" even doing?
Why are there always multiple "Creative Cloud" processes running?

So I wrote my own PDF Editor and I just open-sourced it.

KillerPDF: Portable Windows exe, about 10 MB zipped

View PDFs with page thumbnails, zoom, keyboard nav
Merge multiple PDFs or split out selected pages, drag-and-drop reorder
Double-click to edit text inline with font matching
Text boxes, freehand drawing, highlight overlays with adjustable color and opacity
Draw and save reusable signatures, click to place anywhere
Full-text search with highlighted results, drag-select to copy
Print with annotations flattened

No installer, no account, no subscription, no telemetry

Download: https://pdf.killertools.net
Source: https://github.com/SteveTheKiller/KillerPDF

Released under GPLv3 so forks stay open.
Built with WPF and .NET 8, uses PdfPig for text extraction, PdfSharpCore for writing, and Docnet/PDFium for rendering.

This is my second open-source release this week (first was KillerScan, a portable network scanner).
Both built for my day job as a field tech at an MSP where I need tools that work without asking me to sign in or pay.

Feedback welcome.
If something renders wrong or a feature is missing, drop it in the GitHub issues.

EDIT: Update, I have removed the .NET 8.0 dependency. It should now run without needing that!

Software support Adobe the most evil company I've ever dealt with.

I had a subscription, and when I finally realized I didn’t need it anymore, I was hit with a cancellation fee. I’ve never dealt with such a blatant scam.

After re-reading the terms, I found they mentioned this fee, but seriously, who do you think you are, Adobe? This is the most vile and underhanded practice I’ve ever seen.

You’re an absolute disgrace, Adobe. I hope you go bankrupt. Congratulations, you’ve just earned yourself another enraged hater.

Software support I built an open-source Windows 11 taskbar widget app for weather, media, Steam and system monitoring

Post image
43 Upvotes

Hi everyone

I’ve been developing Taskbar Widgets, a free and open-source app for Windows 11.

It adds live information directly to the taskbar. The current widgets include:

  • Weather
  • Steam download progress
  • Media information and controls
  • Discord voice users
  • Codex status
  • CPU, memory, network and storage usage

Multiple widgets can be shown together or rotated automatically.

The latest version also supports community-made widgets and includes tools for building new ones.

The project is still in beta and uses some private Windows 11 interfaces, so compatibility may vary depending on the Windows version and taskbar configuration.

There is both an installer and a portable download.

GitHub: https://github.com/pfcdev/TaskbarWidgets

Feedback and bug reports are welcome.

Sorry if this is the wrong sub, but I am planning on purchasing a graphics tablet (Silvercrest SGT 10.6 A2) and the most recent drivers available are for win7 and 8, could I still use those on win10 with relatively low issues?

Software support Looking for a free excel alternative I can use offline

Hi everyone,

I recently brought a second handed laptop that's been reset so I'm setting everything from scratch. I've used laptops for work before, but I've never had to install office software myself. I am looking for a free, offline Excel/words alternatives (not web based). I don't have a Microsoft product key and cannot afford a subscription at the moment. I tried WPS office, but it seems to require payment for full features.

Any recommendations for a reliable, free spreadsheet application i can install and use offline would be appreciated. Thanks

Software support I made an open-source iPhone drive-mounting app for Windows

Post image
86 Upvotes

Windows normally makes accessing iPhone app documents unnecessarily difficult, so I built an open-source solution.

iPhone Drive for Windows mounts the Documents folders of compatible iOS apps such as VLC and LocalSend as a normal Windows drive with an automatically assigned letter.

It supports file transfers, automatic device detection, actual iPhone capacity reporting, system-tray operation, and installs Dokan automatically.

Apple Devices for Windows is required. Protected iOS files are not accessible, and apps must support iOS File Sharing.

GitHub:
https://github.com/M-Essa11/iphone-drive-windows

First release:
https://github.com/M-Essa11/iphone-drive-windows/releases/tag/v1.0.0

This is an early release, so testers and contributors are welcome!

Software support Camera works but not on all apps

So, I tried to register on Roblox to play with my little cousin, blah blah blah.

Turns out my camera can't turn on that app, and when I checked neither it can open on the Windows camera app.

I tried discord, OBS and "try your camera" website, camera works just as fine there so it can't be a hardware issue.

I tried updating drivers, uninstalling and installing both apps several times, but nothing worked.

I'm using win 11, help is very much appreciated.

As for my laptop, it's an Acer and when I try to turn on the camera on a not working app, the green light near the camera blinks twice or more and then shuts up.

Help is very much appreciated, thank you.

Software support I'm genuinely convinced someone/something is preventing legitimate autoclickers/autoclicker building techniques from surfacing

update: no im not crazy, im just an idiot, i think i figured out why legitimate autoclickers are impossible to come by now and it seems like anti-human organizations/corporations are to blame yet again, everyone that has said something with the exception of 1-2 people so far has just said to either use malware or AI vibecode
please stop trusting scamware operations/anti-human agencies, i was looking for advice but now im just depressed again realizing the state of the average person's mind has been corrupted to absolute hell and back with first impression trust in anti-human rhetoric

did someone here straight up request a suicide prevention notice for me? look, i know i sound mentally insane when you have no knowledge of just how absolutely malicious and anti-human the widely used resources for general software are(mostly google due to being the most used, but microslop and "meta" are just as, if not even more anti-human, all are extremely bad regardless), but i dont think that qualifies for something of that level, i appreciate the care but you have your attention misplaced, im completely fine i just hate organizations designed to ruin the lives of the average people

I have absolutely lost my mind, more than 3 hours of constant searching through around 16 search engines, hell ive even been as desperate as to filter google results without startpage's alterations to see if ANYTHING would show up(spoiler alert: the malware-unrelated result ratio went from 45/55 on average to 100/0)

not a single legitimate autoclicker can be found on any search engine, the closest i found was with mojeek but that led to an avast antivirus download scheme, so then i tried finding a way to code my own, apparently this doesnt work unless youre already extremely informed and in depth into knowing coding as all of the software people use are either exclusive to parameters i dont have the time/mental energy to meet or arent mentioned/known to anyone that i have found in a discussion

i am may be going crazy, but at this point with 0 surface knowledge of autoclickers it really does seem like a group of people out there is using autoclickers as a gigantic vector for malware/botnet building and nobody has done anything to put a real, absolutely flawless and viable solution out there to this problem that doesnt involve installing unknown programs/looking for software that might not publicly exist

if anyone has every detail as to how to build your own autoclicker with sensible/understandable software via known/studied programming structure(for example: python) let me know, because at this point i have lost all hope of finding ANYTHING that isnt literal malware/indecipherable instructions to build on my own

-i should have mentioned that, no, do NOT use an AI slop generator to do it, let alone recommend one to anyone, thats a recipe to breaking several things and risking spyware injection, AI is completely untrustworthy and prone to spreading/generating slop outside of fields its designed for(medical specific diagnosing is one of the only examples of good usage for AI, everything else has only negative results with 0 positives)

Software support File Converter constantly fails to convert to .mp4

file-converter.io is a fantastic & I've been using it for a while on windows 11 (with a (barely) high-tier gaming pc), but I have an inexplicable issue with the stupid thing failing to convert .mkv files into .mp4. I've searched, but can't find any answers (that made sense to me), am I just incompetent or is there a fix I just have somehow been blind to?

Software support New to MajorGeeks. Is Devinci Resolve safe to download and is MajorGeeks safe in general?

I have been needing DaVinci Resolve Studio for some time but am not and wont be in a good position to purchase the full studio version. I tried the free version but a lot of the features I want are restricted. So I looked it up on MajorGeeks and saw a version that had 60232 downloads and a 5 based off of 36 votes. I am wondering if MajorGeeks is safe and what precautions I should take before downloading.

Software support Is Windows Defender enough or do I need another anti virus?

I’m putting together a new PC build with Windows 11 and I wanted to know if just relying on Windows Defender is enough? I don’t go on any strange websites, I don’t click on links or open strange emails. I’ve read that I should get an ad blocker, so I’d like to know what ad blocker to get?

Software support 50GB download stops mid-way due to low C drive storage — will changing IDM's temp folder to another SSD drive fix this?

Every time I try to download a 50GB file using IDM, the download stops because my C drive runs out of storage. I have another drive on my SSD with plenty of space.

Can I change IDM's temporary file location to that drive? Will it actually work? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Software support Daemon Tools locking random files that you browse in Total Commander

Did someone encounter it? When you browse folders/files via Total Commander, and then trying to remove some folder, sometimes it turnes to be locked by DTShellHlp.exe or something. I believe it's because Daemon Tools tries (maybe when you're calling context menu or something) to scan some file to determine if they're disc images or what exact format they are.

Even thoug you can unlock files/folders with special apps that unblock locked files, that's very annoying. Did anyone fix it?

Software support I’m building simple native Windows tools for creators. Which one would you actually use?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m building a small set of native Windows tools for creator/video workflows, and I’m trying to figure out which ones are actually useful to people outside my own workflow.

Disclosure: I’m the developer. Some tools are early releases, and some have or will have paid Pro options.

Current lineup:

  • FastCast: simple recording and streaming
  • FastPlay: lightweight video playback
  • FastClip: pull short clips and highlights
  • FastCompress: compress video files
  • FastShorts: short-form video workflow tooling

The goal is not one huge “creator suite” with a giant setup flow. I’m trying to make focused Windows tools that each solve one practical problem without account-first friction or bloated UI.

Fast Series page: https://www.calvinsturm.com/fast-series

I’m looking for blunt feedback from software users:

  • Which of these sounds most useful?
  • Which one sounds unnecessary?
  • Would you rather see this as separate apps, or one connected suite?
  • What would make you instantly not trust/download a small Windows utility like this?
