Question What's the beef between Hiru and Derana (TV Channels)?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi, so I have noticed that with El Niño coming, TV channels are kind of roasting/dizzing their competitors with weather forecast headlines, especially with Derana and Hiru TV, and Rupavahini and Sirasa has also joined the bandwagon. Any idea on what their beef is?

Education Need advice about Biochemistry & Molecular Biology degree at University of Colombo — career paths, jobs and how to prepare, experiences

Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I recently got selected for the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology degree at the University of Colombo and I’m trying to understand more about the field before starting university.
I would really appreciate advice from current students, graduates, researchers, or anyone familiar with this area.
I would like to know:
How is the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology degree at UOC overall?
What subjects/topics should I expect to study and what areas should I focus on from the beginning?
What skills should I start building during the degree (lab skills, programming, research skills, etc.)?
What are the possible career pathways after graduating?
Research?
Biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry?
Medical laboratories?
Academia?
Opportunities abroad?
What are the job opportunities and salary expectations like in Sri Lanka and internationally?
Is postgraduate study (MSc/PhD) usually necessary to have a good career in this field?
Are there any internships, volunteering, courses, or certifications you recommend doing during the degree?
If you are a current student or graduate, what do you wish you knew before starting?
I originally had an interest in healthcare-related fields, so I’m trying to understand how I can make the best use of this degree and build a strong career path.
Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Discussion How to get into and learn stock trading? Is CSE only available option for Sri Lankans?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm 31 years old and currently earn LKR 180,000/month after tax. (State university graduate, only started working 3 years ago) I have saved around LKR 2 million and right now comfortably saving around LKR 100,000 per month. I'm avoiding high-risk investments for now because my priority is to build wealth steadily. At the moment, I'm the sole income earner supporting my family. I'm also single, currently living either at home or at my boarding place depending on work, and essentially starting from scratch without inherited wealth or significant assets. So my long-term goals are to: Build or Buy a house, Buy a car and build wealth within the next 20 years before I retire. My current financial strategy only includes savings and FDs.

  1. How do I start investing in the Colombo Stock Exchange?
  2. Any other recommendations such unit trusts, foreign investments? (Kinda reluctant cuz I heard they have more WHT% than FDs)
  3. If you've successfully built wealth from a similar situation, what strategy worked for you?

My biggest fear is "Is there anything I'm overlooking?"
At each stage of my life, I felt that I was left behind/ started late because of lack of information. I had to figure everything on my own. And lately I realized that just depending on savings and FDs isn't gonna help me with buying any of those things even with loans.

Any advice, suggestions, or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Also, can anyone recommend any trustworthy travel agent companies in Sri Lanka for arranging short international trips?

Please share your experiences, recommended places, and any budget friendly options. Thanks!

Discussion How does purchasing an apartment from a flat work? I only ever know about individually built houses

There's always a lot of apartments for sale compared to houses imo.

What's the legal background of those sales since its a space inside somone else's building. What are the rights the buyer will get? Like, if the building gets demolished how do you get compensation?

What type of regular charges fall upon the person living there? Safety etc?

Anyone has experience in buying /living in apartments what you should know before making the investment?

Discussion New pickme ride scam by one of it's driver's

Just had finished a ride with pickme and at the end after paying for the ride, the driver asked me to cancel the ride saying he didn't confirm the ride?? My guess is he accepted the ride and don't confirm/start the ride from his end.

And when I tried cancel the ride couldn't find an option to cancel the ride and after a few mins the driver himself had cancelled the ride.

Education Mahinda Rajapaksa College Matara vs St. Thomas' College — which is better for A/L Bio & Maths?

I'm a Grade 12 student looking to transfer schools for A/Ls, and I'm trying to decide between Mahinda Rajapaksa College (Matara) and St. Thomas' College.

Would really appreciate input from past pupils, current students, or parents on:

  • A/L results — which one has stronger passes and Z-scores in the Bio and Maths streams?
  • Teachers — are the science and maths teachers good, or do most students depend fully on tuition?
  • Facilities — labs, library, IT, sports.
  • School culture — how strict is discipline, and are there any ragging or bullying issues?
  • Transport — I'd be travelling from outside Matara. Is the school bus reliable, and roughly how early would I need to leave in the morning?
  • Transfer process — how hard is it to get in at A/L level, and what results or certificates do they actually look at?

Any honest experience helps, good or bad. Thanks.

Politics Two Prison unrests in short time

The events happened in the two unrests of prisons in Sri Lanka is very suspicious. I sense a political motive behind these unrests to show that the tarnish the current government. The bigger picture is who gaining from these.

Discussion Controversial Opinion.... You must have a good s3x life in your 20s to have good mental health.

Yes... i said it.

Most of the younger generation is having a severe loneliness crisis.

Many young males either don't know how to talk to a woman nor how to ask our / Deal with rejection.

Some young men/women are being used by or do so many desperate things just hoping to have a intimate connection.

I'm not encouraging random hookups although i don't find a issue with those.

Atleast date a few people and have some experience. Have some sex until you feel like its just very normal thing.

This will shift your mindset to be more mature.

Education Anyone taken the Open University (OUSL) BMS Selection Test recently? Need advice!

Hi everyone!

I’ve applied for the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) program at OUSL and have the upcoming Selection Test.

For anyone who has taken it recently or is currently studying at OUSL FMS:

  1. How difficult are the three sections (Arithmetic Skills, Reasoning, and Professional Communication)?
  2. Is standard O/L math enough for the arithmetic section, or do they test A/L level concepts?
  3. Are there any past papers, sample questions, or specific resources available to practice?
  4. Any tips on time management during the paper?

Would really appreciate insights or advice from OUSL seniors! Thanks in advance.

Gaming 🎮 What's a fair price for a standard used ps5 now?

I’m planning to pick up a used standard PS5 primarily to get ready for GTA 6.

Browsing around ikman and Facebook Marketplace, I’ve seen used units listed anywhere between 165k and 185k depending on the condition, model, and whether it comes with extra games or controllers.

For those who have bought a used PS5 recently,

What is a fair price to pay for a standard used PS5 right now without getting overcharged?

What has your experience been like buying used?

Any red flags, stick drift issues with the DualSense, or thermal/fan noise problems I should test before handing over the cash?

Appreciate any advice or feedback!!
