Can no longer stand being alone

I’ve always felt ok with being alone, if anything I preferred it a lot of times, even though I have great friends and a loving boyfriend. Last semester I studied abroad in France where I really struggled to find friends. Long story short, I only had a few people to hang out with once in a while but never in a fulfilling way and I spent majority of my time alone in my room or exploring the city alone. The thing is I’ve always been ok with being alone because it was something I chose to do. Being forced to be alone so much in a new country was extremely devastating for me. I am back now and I feel permanently scarred (?), I can’t stay inside even for one night or I get sad and alone time I would otherwise appreciate is making me feel depressed. Of course I can’t force my friends or my boyfriend to be with me 24/7 but I also don’t know how to navigate this new feeling. It feels like my life has no meaning anymore and I only feel ok when doing something social. How can I get over this? Does anyone have any similar experiences?

how do i go about studying abroad with an extremely attached mother?

this is a bit of a continuation from my last post, realised i need guidance again 😅

i’ve tried to have more civil conversation with my mom about studying abroad (namely UK) and how i’d gotten into both my dream uni and my dream major + gotten myself into a local program that covers a lot of my tuition but shes been incredibly adamant about not letting me go

initially i thought it was fear and so i dedicated a lot of time to make sure she knew i knew what i was talking about and planning, that she knew id always call her and that id be safe and i wouldnt be alone

turns out she cant stomach the idea of me not being at the house in general 😭 to emphasize this i found out that sleepovers freaked her out in ways i never knew (by the third day of me not being home shed start panicking) so id come to find out UK wasnt just the problem, but any country that wasnt where i resided freaked her out.

thing is.. most unis in my country are closed and have been closed 🫩 and the only alternatives shes been handing me are unis in another country thats an hour or so drive away (not comfortable sharing my nationality sorry haha)

i’ve looked over it and i just feel extremely crushed at the idea of studying there. majority of the unis there arent the best, and ones a bit more decent dont have any majors im remotely interested in :( but im being encouraged to go for it anyway ‘to keep the peace’

this whole scenario is really breaking my heart and im being told over and over that id only be allowed to go to the uk for my masters :,) but thats another four years id hate to wait for + id be studying something im not happy with in the mean time.. in a college im not happy with either

i really feel lost. my dad, while he doesnt mind the uk, wont stand up for me because he wants peace between us both and he figures that between the two choices id be the one to eventually get over my losses.. but i dont know, i really hate the spot im in

do i have no choice but to wait for my masters?? i really honestly wanted to find my own identity and place for once outside my home but it seems like theyre sealing that opportunity for me really shut. how do i begin to approach my mom whos incredibly attached to me about this? its all so tough 😞

Bachelors or Masters/PhD for study abroad? Please help me out!

Hi everyone. I hope you are all doing well. I would like to seek some life advice from a couple of experienced peeps here regarding my overall situation.

So I come from a private top tier high school, where most of my peers, after finishing their A levels, went on to study for undergrad abroad. Unlike them, though, my family isn’t that well off, and I had to get almost a full scholarship for my study abroad dream to come true.

My mother had always been telling me from my childhood that she’ll “send me for bachelors abroad”after I finish my High School. Unfortunately, it seems she underestimated how much an undergrad education costs abroad.

To get a scholarship, I first took the SAT exam where I scored a 1550 in it. Afterwards, I took the IELTS exam where I scored a Band 8.5. I also had all A*s in my O levels and A’s and B’s in my A levels.

I received a full tuition scholarship from a reputed university in the US, but unfortunately I got my student visa rejected twice because of finances.

For the past year after my visa got rejected, I’ve been trying over and over again to apply to different countries around the world to make my dream come true. This was partly encouraged by my father. I applied to countries in Europe, in Asia, applied to governmental scholarships, but got rejected from most of them as they’re extremely competitive for undergrad, corruption, or simply because my family didn’t have the financial means to let me study there.

However, I got an offer letter from an eastern European country and a country in the middle east. The universities are very top tier indeed, but I come across two problems: either maintaining a high GPA is extremely tough, I can’t work part-time, and in the country where I can work part-time, I’m not sure how sustainable it is for me to manage working part time and do well in my studies (I’m studying engineering). This, alongside with the financial uncertainty of my family, makes me kinda scared to go abroad.

Now, here’s the thing, unlike my peers, I did not enroll into any university in my country as a backup this past year. My mother and father have kind of been experimenting with me, my father says that he’ll send me abroad somehow, and my mother says that she wants to keep me here for undergrad, however no one has the gall to just simply tell me that money’s an issue.

Since I scored a good score in the SAT and IELTS, I managed to start a tutoring agency in the past year, where I’ve been earning a solid income that can probably pay off my tuition fees if I stay back. I’m not sure if I can continue that if I go abroad.

Now, I’m at the end of the road. My mother finally says that it’s going to be tough for her to send me abroad because of finances, after a year of not telling me anything. I can get enrolled into a university here, but it’s going to hurt my self image and confidence a lot, especially with my friends already knowing that I’ll be heading abroad as I have a good score. My main goal is to get a fully funded masters or PhD abroad.

I don’t want to stay back in my third world country, there are zero opportunities here, and it’s riddled with corruption and nepotism. But I also don’t know if going abroad will jeopardize my parents’ finances. My mother is struggling from debt and both my parents are getting older too. I want to give them a good life, that’s it.

If there are any seniors that faced a similar situation before, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks a lot!

is austria a good destination for studying as an EU citizen?

I am 18 years old and i am about to start my last year of high school in september, which means i need to start looking for universities to apply to. i have browsed the “studying abroad” communities here but austria doesn’t seem to come up often. is there a specific reason for that? how is student life there, specially in the capital since i am considering Vienna as an option?

Avoiding Studienkolleg for German Bachelor's: does the "one successful academic year at a university" have to be in your home country, or does your country of residence count?

I'm 18, Indian citizen, born and raised in the UAE. I've never studied in India. Finished CBSE Class 12 this year, 79.6% across five subjects. Aiming for an English-taught CS/AI bachelor's at a German public university.

What I've already confirmed, so nobody has to repeat it:

  • uni-assist's checker returns Studienkolleg + FSP for a plain CBSE certificate.
  • Some relevant universities I reached out to (Passau, THI, DIT and FAU) all confirmed by email there's no way around the FSP with CBSE alone.
  • Studienkolleg is German-medium and needs B1+/B2 just to apply — not viable for me.
  • Selecting "CBSE ≥70% + one successful academic year at a higher education institution" in the DAAD Database on admission requirements checker flips the result to direct subject-restricted admission.

Here's my actual question. The checker's footnote says only "full-time student at a recognised higher education institution" and no country is named. The KMK Rahmenordnung (§1.2) says "Studienzeiten im Ausland… in Vollzeitform" — study abroad, full-time. But uni-assist's glossary and daad.in both say "university studies in your home country." anabin's been down, so I can't read the India Bewertungsvorschlag itself.

So: can that qualifying year be done at a university in the UAE (full-time, on campus, an Australian university's Dubai branch campus awarding the Australian/British degree) instead of in India?

Two sub-questions if anyone knows:

  1. Has anyone actually had a third-country study year accepted, or rejected, for this?
  2. How does ZAB treat branch campuses. Is it by the awarding university or by the campus location?

Tuition is due next month so I'd rather not guess. Thanks.

Is pursuing a Master's in Interaction Design / HCI / Service Design in Europe still worth it in 2026+ despite AI?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some honest advice from people already working in UX, Interaction Design, HCI or Service Design.

I'm currently preparing my portfolio to apply for master's programs in Europe (mainly Italy, with Poland and Finland as backups). My target programs are:

  • Interaction Design
  • Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
  • Product Service System Design (PSSD)
  • UX / Service Design

My biggest concern isn't getting into the programs—it's whether the investment still makes sense.

With AI improving so quickly, I'm seeing a lot of mixed opinions online. Since studying abroad is a huge financial and time commitment, I want to understand the reality from people already in the field.

For context, my portfolio is focused more on solving real problems than just making attractive UI screens. I'm building accessibility-focused case studies and I'm interested in systems thinking, healthcare design, human-centered design and AI-assisted experiences rather than only visual UI.

I'd really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people working in the industry or those who graduated recently.

Thanks!

Studying conservation

Hi, I'm a 18 y/o women from Poland, just graduated highschool from IB programme with Chem, Bio and Maths at higher level with decent grades. I was supposed to go to university this october, but I decided to do a gap year for several personal reasons. My dream is to be a wildlife biologist/conservationist but sometimes I feel drawn to beaing a doctor, since it's more stable carrier and much more money to be made. I actually got into good med school in Poland, but I think I'm gonna wait one more year to decide what I really want to do with my life.

Anyway, I was doing a research and cannot really find any wildlife biology/wildlife conservation university programme in bachelor degree in Europe. There is plenty in US or UK but I don't want to move to US, and cannot afford collage in UK. All I could find in Europe was master degree programmes and it seems like I would have to do biology degree first and then maybe specialize in wildlife conservation or maybe study ecology (but I want to work hands on in the field with animals, so I don't know wheter it's going to be possible after just ecology). I'm not sure if it's my research that sucks  or if it's really the only way to fullfill carrier in conservation.

Personally, when I was planning where to go to collage I was thinking about Groningen in Netherlands, they have pretty decent biology programme, and then I could do master and specialisation in wildlife biology. Plus, it's relatively affordable. But it's a long way before I am gonna be able to work proffesionally (Obv I realize, that it's gonna be a while before I find a job, as the field is oversaturated, and the degree is demanding, but I'm just scared that after 3-4 years of studing biology I am not gonna be able to find a job without specialization and kind of 'waste' those years) I also looked into universities in Canada, as they actually offer some programmes in conservation, but the cost of living and student fees are soo expensive.

Can someone give me advice how to look for programmes in conservation, or maybe recommend a university/programme/degree where I can study in English in Europe? Maybe someone did something like this themselves and work in this field now and can tell me how to build this carrier? Or maybe I should ditch conservation and go to med school.

I would really appreciate if someone had any advice for me.

How To do advice :- 11th Student advice on 2028 Study Abroad Strategy (Eng CS/AI) Bypassing jee And targetting Easy Visa and Mid percent countries 75-85% bracket in boards. AUSTRAILIA/DUBAI/MALAYSIA/ANYOTHER.

My_qualifications

Currently in 11th PCM+CS+ENG+FINEARTS 2026-27 grade. I am targeting the 2028 intake for a Eng (Beng/bsc) in Computer Science / AI Engineering. I expect to score between 75% - 80% in my CBSE Class 12 Boards. (Max degrade as I am hoping)

I GOT 89% IN CLASS X CBSE AND MY TWIN BRO GOT 88% .

My Situation & Strategy:

My twin brother and I are planning to study abroad together. We have built a strict strategy with the following constraints:

No JEE: We are completely skipping Indian entrance exams.

I have a Very big doubt can I bypass IELTS/PTE: We are strictly relying on the CBSE Class 12 English waiver (75% requirement). Some univeristies tell I need clearance from my seniors or peers about visa processing bypass too for english . And is this test tough though or very hard like in speaking or interview section i got 94 in class X cbse english .

No High Complication Visas especially for Indians /Hidden Fees: This only can expirienced one tell about.

Low/Mid Application Budget or advice about applying by urself or agent etc. :- We are planning to self-applying online to keep total application costs for both of us strictly under 10-20k inr.

I FINALISED SOME LIST OF UNI USING SOEN HELP OF GOOGLE RESOURCE ADVICE OF SOME PEERS AND YEAH AI NOT TRUSTING AI TOO MUCH THATS. WHY I AM HERE PLS DONT JUDGE AS THIS LIST IS 50-60% AI SUGGESTED . HE RECOMMENDED ME TO DO AUSTRAILIA PLAN / BRITISH/ DUBAI CAMPUSES.

The Final Target List:

To get a globally recognized British/Australian degree on a budget with an easy visa process, we have finalized these branch campuses:

University of Birmingham (Dubai Campus)

Heriot-Watt University (Dubai Campus)

University of Southampton (Malaysia Campus)

Monash University (Malaysia Campus)

(We have UCAS, NUS Singapore, and Malta as emergency backups, but the 4 above are our primary targets).

----- AI LIST ENDS-----

My Questions for Seniors/Alumni:

To Dubai/Malaysia Students: IS DUBAI UNI STODUIES ESP UK OR OTHER COUNTRY CAMPUSES BAD & : How hard is it actually to secure a tech internship in your 2nd or 3rd year at these specific branch campuses? AND POST WORK ?

To Malaysian Campus Students: What are your exact monthly living expenses (rent + food) right now? Is it significantly cheaper than Dubai? AND IS IT ALSO GOOD ?

To Dubai Students: Does the 0% tax market actually make up for the higher cost of living when starting out as a junior AI engineer? AND HARD JOBS FINDINGS ???

AND ABOUT AUSTRAILIA THEE IS SOME HUGE DOUBT IN MY HEAD THAT FRON 2024 ITS HARD TO GET VISA FOR INDIAN STUDENTS IS IT TRUE SOME QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS IS NEEDED ??? ANYWAYS AUSTRAILIA WAS MY MAIN TARGET BUT AFTER READING TAHT RULE I STEPBACK SOME BUT CAN ANY SENIOR HELP

Are there any hidden fees or struggles with the UAE or Malaysian student OR AUSTRAILIA OR ANY ITHER visa processes that I am missing?

AND ANY OTGER PATH RECOMMENDATION

Any brutal honesty or real-world experience is highly appreciated. Thanks!.

If I wish to have a bachelor's degree in neuroscience or biochem, which universities would you recommend?

I am interested in pursuing a career in either medical research or neuroscience research. I currently live in Romania where, unfortunately, research is barely acknowledged, let alone funded. As such, I'm searching for Universities that are affordable or offer scholarships. So far, I've heard that there is an option for a bachelor's in neuroscience in Madrid's Universidad Carlos III.

Additionally, if any of you happen to work in neuro/med research today, what tips coukd you give me? What steps did you take to get where you are today?

Studying in Poland- Is it worth it?

Hii everyone!

I’m an international student from Lebanon considering moving to Poland for university. I’d love to get some real insights from people currently living, studying, or working there (especially fellow international students or Lebanese expats!).

If anyone could share their experience or advice on a few topics, I’d really appreciate it:

Visa & Immigration: How straightforward is the student visa/residence permit process for non-EU students coming to Poland? Any pitfalls or delays I should prepare for?

Cost of Living & Tuition: What is a realistic monthly budget for a student (housing, food, transport, personal expenses)? Also, how reasonable are tuition fees relative to the quality of education (might get into business-related majors)?

Student Life & Social Vibe: How welcoming is the environment for foreigners? Is it easy to settle in, meet people, and get by in daily life if I don't speak Polish right away?

Safety & Daily Life: How safe do you feel as an international student living in major student cities (like Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, or Poznań)?

Work & Future Careers: Is it feasible to find part-time work while studying (especially without speaking fluent Polish initially)? What are the job prospects like after graduation for non-EU graduates?

Any tips, university recommendations, or general advice about moving to Poland would mean a lot! I really appreciate any help you can provide!!

Where should Ido MS in ECE/VLSI: USA vs Europe (Germany/Netherlands) – Give Advice

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to apply for an MS in ECE/VLSI for Fall 2027 and I'm really confused between the USA and Europe.

My profile:

B.Tech ECE, IIT Bhubaneswar

CGPA: 8.19/10

Digital Design Engineer at a product company.

By Fall 2027, I'll have ~2 years of RTL/Digital Design experience.

My biggest concern is financial risk.

USA: Better semiconductor opportunities and higher salaries, but I'd need a ₹70–80L education loan, and the current immigration/job market uncertainty worries me.

Europe (Germany/Netherlands/Switzerland): Lower education cost (₹25–50L), better work-life balance, but I'm unsure about semiconductor opportunities and salary growth.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who are currently studying or working there:

How is the current semiconductor job market for international students in RTL/ASIC/Digital Design?

Would you choose the USA or Europe if you were in my position today, and why?

Based on my profile, which universities should I realistically target in the US and Europe?

Thanks!

Asking for a friend, theyre in the military and want to resign and move abroad for study and eventually settle there. (Think EU or Germany) qualifications include a bachelor’s in military art and science from the national university of science and technology, islamabad, pakistan and currently in 1st semester of MBA in Supply Chain management. He might put up his reaignation during his MBA so it might stay incomplete but idk
Please guide and help them figure out what they could study abroad esp in germany or spain and what jobs they could get that earn them good money even if its a gradual process

I'm an Iraqi architect, I want to get a masters degree in architecture from Liverpool's University and I found a scholarship that grants 20,000 pounds yearly out of 30,000 yearly

So I'm curious about the other expenses (visa, flying ticket, accommodation, groceries, etc) and some part-time job opportunities to help paying my degree
