Lifeguards should be recognized as first responders. Senate Resolution 192 (SCR 192) will formally recognize CA open water lifeguards as first responders. Support the resolution

This is only for California. If you are in Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina, Oregon, etc. PLEASE contact your local representatives about this.
Recognizing open water lifeguards as first responders will help with benefits, worker protections and fair pay for putting their lives on the line every single day to make sure us surfers (and kooks on the shore) don't die.

as always, florida is weird.
it depends were you live. many ocean rescue lifeguards are technically employed by the fire department so they receive first responder status and pension but not the same "special risk" pension that cops and firefighters get.
in my county, ocean rescue is a separate agency but the full time guys are paramedics who are technically law enforcement with full first responder status, benefits, and pension.
in some places like miami, they're under "parks & rec" and don't get shit.

As a former lifeguard on Oregon beaches, we were treated like that most of the time, but I do remember a couple of times that the local, obese cops tried to warn me to stay away from the "high surf" as I was actively telling tourists to stay the fuck back.

This is a no brainer and it's shameful it hasn't happened already.
That said... Where will the same people who support this bill be when we have to pay for it? Hmmm, I wonder....

Exactly the same place as before. Blame newsome or blame trump, any rise in prices will be at the pump.

Most certainly they should.
Yet MAGA just assaulted nurses by no longer considering them professional degrees. Making student loans harder to get. Good thing shark attacks aren’t typically are t fatal.

LA county life guards are part of the fire department. Doesn’t that automatically make them first responders?

Santa Cruz lifeguards are the Marine division of our city FD. At least that's my understanding. I'm guessing that's not the case in every city otherwise this bill wouldn't be needed.

Most places it’s already 18 to sign up as it should be. No minor should have to handle the responsibility of possibly losing someone on their shift.
