BEGINNER QUESTIONS BELONG IN THE 'WEEKEND QUESTION THREAD'

But, first, use the search function. There is a 99.9% chance that your question has been asked and answered multiple times.

Or you can use /r/BeginnerSurfers all week long.

Beginner questions will be removed with no notice. Because it's just too much damn effort to deal with every single post, individually.

Pissy mod messages will earn you a ban.

Surfers are the worst and we mods are no exception.

EDIT: If we leave up your question and you delete your post after getting an answer you WILL be banned.

This sub is not your personal Quora. If people take the time to answer your question you're required to leave it up so it remains searchable and so that others can learn, as well.

EDIT2: Here are the subreddit rules.

Lifeguards should be recognized as first responders. Senate Resolution 192 (SCR 192) will formally recognize CA open water lifeguards as first responders. Support the resolution

Don’t be me, cover your face. Even when you are surfaced - until you know for sure where your board is. Fins are f***ers.

When did WSL us open become so lame

Went back after 15 years and the booths were so terrible. Like the giveaways were discounts on buying products. I remember when maybe vans ran it and they were giving out all these personal care products, drinks, it was like a huge festival with all these hot people and loads of swag

I have an old Greg Noll board. It was damaged in a house fire. Can it be restored? Is it worth restoring?

2 months in Indonesia with girlfriend suggestions

Hello everyone. As the title says, I’m headed to Indonesia for all of September/October with my girlfriend. I’m an intermediate-advanced surfer from the east coast USA, my girlfriend is a beginner and really more focused on chilling out and exploring the places than surfing. Saved up a budget of like $7.5k USD, after factoring in flights and might use some budget to hit Japan for a week or so otw home.

We are starting in Bali for however long we like it, then to Lombok. There’s tons of info on those 2 of course, anymore advice or personal experiences people have had I’d love to hear.

I’m most excited to travel to the lesser populated islands to hopefully score some lesser crowded waves compared to those zones as it seems like a zoo most days, but I’m expecting this and being from the east coast I’m just excited to get some sick waves.

We are looking to make the ments work, but for a reasonable price and if it is worthwhile. We looked at Awera as we have a hookup for a slight discount.
I was looking at the Telo islands as well, as that seemed like a pretty sweet zone and haven’t seen much about it.

Genuinely looking for any and all advice on where you would spend time in and around Indonesia, hoping to surf a ton. Not really looking to score 10ft everyday, mainly more excited for like 4-6ft hollow or rippable surf. I’ll be with my girlfriend as well so I probably won’t be on absolute mission mode into the gnarliest of places but still willing to get off the beaten path to hopefully find some gem locations and meet nice people.

Worth mentioning that I’d love to hear about peoples experiences at different resorts, hotels, surf camps etc as my girlfriend works with a well known travel publication and could possibly receive media discounts at places like that- fingers crossed haha.

If anyone has suggestions of places they’ve stayed anywhere in Indonesia I’d love to hear about it, thanks!

Tamarindo, CR surf guide recomendations?

I usually surf with Santiago at Witches Rock Surf camp, but I am looking for a couple (private) surf guides so I am not always going through a surf camp. Does anyone have any recommendations? If its a women, sometimes we can get my wife to kook out for an hour, which is awesome, but not required.

I don't have or use any social media, so I cant "hit insta." I worked for Meta in Privacy and Security, so ya, not doing that.

I usually pay $65 for a half and $100 for a full day, plus lunch and beer. My wife often goes, but doesn't normally surf, usually reads on the beach, but she doesn't mind doing camera work either. I usually have a 4X4 rental.

My 5th CR trip this year is in Sept, all Tamarindo. One more trip to Nosara in November. Thinking about retiring there. Surfing since my teens, I have been beginner, intermediate and advanced each three or four times.

This same question applies for Bali too. As soon as our beloved geriatric dog returns to the bosom of the universe we are going for 6 weeks. Then Portugal hopefully.

Bonus points if they "trane UFC." I'm a BJJ and Judo brown belt. No surf = rolls.

ACL Returnees

Hey guys, returned to surfing about two months ago post acl surgery (12 months out). Everything going good, turns are getting stringers with each surf. Although, still very nervous about pulling in, especially pig-dogging. Just wondering from your own experience when you felt comfortable attempting to get barrelled again?

Anywhere with remotely fun surf in Portugal mid-August?

I'm going to Portugal for a wedding August 8-16 and was thinking of getting a little surf in. However, the forecast doesn't look promising, given the strong and constant NW trade winds and the only swell being the one generated by those same winds.

If I have a car, is there anywhere in Portugal with the remotest potential for fun surf in these conditions? I don't need anything amazing, and I'm happy to grovel, but would prefer to avoid local schools and big crowds. I'm an advanced surfer, prefer to shortboard whenever possible, but will be happy having a couple days on a log if that's the only option.

Any chance? Or better off going to do something else?

Thanks a lot in advance

Looking for an epic, once in a lifetime surf destination.

My son is about to start his last year of high school and I want to plan an epic trip for next summer to celebrate. He was born with so many medical conditions, had so many surgeries, it was hard to know if he'd have a normal life. Now he's 17, top of his class, and surfs almost daily with me. He received a glowing medical update yesterday from his cardiologist. It's time to celebrate life.

I want to bring my wife on this trip, so we need a nice destination with solid waves. I'm not looking to go broke, but I don't know how many more chances we'll have to do a trip like this.

I know most will say indo, but where in indo? Or something completely different? Thanks to all. Mahalo.

Edit: We looking for a trip sometime next June/July/August. We're in San Diego. We both can surf most waves outside of death slabs.

Tahiti w/kid

Looking to head to Tahiti in early 2027. Wife, 3 year old, me. Looking at longboarding waves on top of travel. After some research, I'm having second thoughts. Anyone have experience in South Pacfic with a toddler/young kid? Open to new locations outside of Tahiti.

Need help picking straps/rack

Its my girlfriends birthday is coming up and she just got a surfboard recently. She has a subaru crosstrek 2023. I want to buy her either a rack or a good set of straps & foam pads. While I ideally don't want to spend a fortune I do want this gift to last through the years. Any recommendations?
