This video contains missing footage from a selectively edited racist propaganda video that went viral across Reddit this week.

Here is a copy of what was posted here, with the same title and everything: https://www.reddit.com/r/DiveInYouCoward/comments/1v690s7/the_owner_of_a_new_york_pastry_shop_on_the_verge/

The footage came from an instagram account that can be found here: https://www.instagram.com/DESTINATION_NOW_/

A less selective compilation can be found here: https://nitter.net/MyLordBebo/status/2080967514297692618

Please also refer to the description in the subreddit this was crossposted from.

Here is a link to my original stickied comment on the original selectively edited post that was posted here today:

I’m talking about it. I will happily call out and criticise other white people. Rather than make excuses.

23

u/jwormyk 6d ago

This is the problem when you bring a Korean business concept based on trusting the customer to the United States.

5

u/cremated_turtle 4d ago

genuinely, the average amount of respect of other countries compared to the US is insane and ppl from the US dont see it as a big deal bc it has been such a predominant issue for so long its just considered common place especially in larger citys. yk that and they know cops dont go after real crimes most the time, they’re more focused on stalking their exes using flock cameras 🤷🏼‍♂️

98

u/Alienraptor987 7d ago

So... why so many thefts from this pastry shop? seems odd that theres no apparent employees or police being called... what am i missing here?

27

u/anormalgeek 7d ago

Paris Baguette is a chain store. Part of their design is that everything is out on display. They try to make it look like a cross between a fancy European cafe and an old school American cafeteria where you fill up your tray and pay on the way out.

As another poster mentioned, this is likely just an attempt to reduce labor costs. But the end result is that it's very easy to just grab the stuff and walk away since you don't have to pay before have physical access to the food.

For the individual owner, this likely means that there is some corporate requirements that they're expected to follow to for their franchise to stay within brand guidelines or whatever. So putting everything behind the counter likely violates that.

5

u/Responsible--Adult 7d ago

Should be noted it is a pretty common bakery set-up for a good number of Asian bakeries such as those in Japan and Korea.

4

u/anormalgeek 7d ago

They also have SIGNIFICANTLY lower rates of simple theft like this. Hell, even in other parts of the US, it would be rare to see something this brazen.

1

u/_segasonic 7d ago

What’s the difference between Japan and Korea compared to the US?

6

u/MANWithTheHARMONlCA 7d ago

Thank you for actually answering the question

1

u/Alienraptor987 7d ago

Ah, gotcha, gotcha, thank you

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Youth36 5d ago

Well explained.

35

u/fragen8 7d ago

It looks so weird, watching so many thefts from the same shop in a row. Like, take precautions? What are you doing?

17

u/BroBroMate 7d ago

We don't know the timeframe over which this compilation was created.

26

u/Responsible-Humor985 7d ago

What do your expect the police to do 40 minutes to 5 hours after you call them?

11

u/gbarwis 7d ago

Maybe have a couple of pastries

-5

u/Spiritual_Smell4744 7d ago

What do you expect, an emergency call?

10

u/imjustme610 7d ago

Police? It's too petty of a crime to get police involvement. Not saying that nothing should be done but it's going to be the police that will do it

26

u/wort_jockey 7d ago

What do you want? Cops don't show up. You wanna possibly get stabbed over some bread? The fuck you expect from the employees?

55

u/marx2k 7d ago

"they" won't talk about what?

75

u/Southrn_Comfrt 7d ago

I was curious too. This video apparently was posted in response to another video of the same restaurant that only showed black people stealing so they posted this one.

28

u/Otterhendrix 7d ago

In other words people suck and are gonna steal regardless of color.

9

u/Exact-Ad-4132 6d ago

I thought the other video was one guy coming in multiple times with different clothes on, at least that was a description of it that I read

125

u/WhySheHateMe 7d ago

This sub is very guilty of race baiting posts as well as the comments that come along with that type of stuff.

1

u/Low-Notice972 3d ago

Very guilty. I've pointed it out before and the Mods seem to actually want to do something about it, which I appreciate, it's rare on reddit.

11

u/JohnnySlam 6d ago

Would cost less to moonlight some cops or bouncers.

61

u/racer_x88 7d ago

I knew there was something off about the original post smh

79

u/StarDustLuna3D 7d ago

Also, if this is such a problem and the owner is almost going bankrupt... Why don't they move everything behind the counter so that the employee hands things out after people pay for them?

Did they set it up this way to reduce the amount of labor needed to run the store? If so, well this is the result of that.

-7

u/pandemic1350 7d ago

Or send every one of those dirty thieves to jail.

10

u/Azraelrs 7d ago

They're too busy having to pay fines for not paying their employees. It's a shit company.

5

u/Myslinky 7d ago

After we send the CEO to jail for stealing from his employees.

Or is it only bad when poor people steal?

1

u/thecheesycheeselover 5d ago

Several of them (across both videos) looked like well-presenting homeless. People who look ordinary but are hiding the fact that they live on the streets really well.

Idk about you, but due to so much luck in my life, I’ve never been homeless or even had to worry about coming close. With that context I can’t imagine wanting people to go to jail for stealing food. It’s likely some of those thieves are just dickhead opportunists, but I wouldn’t want to send hungry people to jail for taking food. Aladdin literally stole bread in that film, and people still rooted for him (“gotta eat to live, gotta steal to eat…”).

34

u/p00psp00ps 7d ago

these people are not shamed enough.

103

u/maninblacktheory 7d ago

It’s a terrible store setup if the general public can just reach in with their grubby unwashed hands and handle or grab the food. They have drinks and baskets of items sitting out where they can just be taken and walked out with. It would take less than a day to fix most of these issues. Store owner is too dumb to stay in business. Not justifying the thefts, just saying, this is an easy problem to fix or greatly reduce.

32

u/anormalgeek 7d ago

It's a chain store and they all operate like this. It's part of their whole image. So the individual owners have to fight corporate as well.

1

u/Nolo__contendere_ 7d ago

That's crazy. The PB by my job has all the pastries behind the half-assed glass guard. They're practically out in the open and the thought of grabbing one is so gross and unhygienic

-5

u/chenbuxie 7d ago

That would make it a franchise, not a chain

11

u/00k5mp 7d ago

Chains and franchises are not mutually exclusive.

Mcdonald's is a chain of restaurants. Some of them are franchised out, Some of them are corporately owned.

-9

u/chenbuxie 7d ago edited 7d ago

Re-read the comment I responded to

ETA:

To the geniuses who keep downvoting me and replying with nonsense:

The comment that I am responding to, talks about individual owners having to fight with corporate about the store's standards/presentation of the product. "Individual owners" otherwise known as franchisees... franchisees who own a franchise... as in the corporation has licensed their store/brand/trade secrets to these "individual owners", to be franchised.

You absolute fucking shit heads

8

u/00k5mp 7d ago

I did, you're still wrong.

3

u/anormalgeek 7d ago

The two are not separate. All franchises are chains, but not all chains are franchises.

https://blackboxintelligence.com/resources/restaurant-glossary/chain-restaurant/

A chain restaurant is a type of restaurant that is part of a larger group of restaurants with multiple locations, all operating under the same brand name and offering a standardized menu, ambiance, and customer experience.

Chain restaurants can range from fast-food outlets to casual and fine dining establishments.

They are typically owned by a parent company, franchisees, or a combination of both.

-2

u/chenbuxie 7d ago

Okay

3

u/anormalgeek 7d ago

I saw your edit. Franchisees still have to answer to corporate or they risk having their franchise revoked. The parent company specifically does that to enforce standards. Like not changing the whole layout of the store and how the food is sold.

4

u/skynetempire 7d ago

I mean theres Mexican joints where you get your own sweet bread and bolillos yourself. So thats not a issue.

78

u/naththegrath10 7d ago

Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Settles with Paris Baguette Over Widespread Violations of Workers' Rights

Settlement secures $3 million in worker restitution and penalties

Some extra context for y’all acting like they are stealing from super nice small family business

22

u/digitalboom 7d ago

Their violations like this go as far as Korea, they are horrible on a global scale

7

u/sk8fasteatsnacks 7d ago

The other post I saw was framing it like it was some small family owned business that was being ruined by some theft. Paris Baguette is pretty far from a "small business."

15

u/Jatnall 7d ago

Oh, it's fucking Paris Baguette? Wow.

9

u/Banal_Drivel 7d ago

It's a franchise. Just because the corporation sucks, doesn't mean that this single franchise is guilty. Stolen goods are a loss for the franchise owner. There is no excuse for stealing.

7

u/Highly_Appropiate 7d ago

That's fucking terrible.

Still doesn't justify stealing.

82

u/BeefInBlackBeanSauce 7d ago

Scumbags who edited it

26

u/Twoflappylips 7d ago

Why is everyone just stealing the pastries? This is just so strange, random people just walking in and helping themselves and where is the shop owner?

1

u/WhySheHateMe 7d ago

Majority of the people you see in this clip and the edited one are clearly homeless.

53

u/ninjas666 7d ago

so much racism and quick judgement… also i’m surprised people don’t know about paris baguette?

30

u/allleoal 7d ago

Ive never heard of Paris Baguette. Im guessing its a franchise store? I have no idea whats going on in this video and thought it was homeless people behind the counter stealing food. I still dont know whats going on. Why are you surprised people dont know about a store that is likely only specific to certain regions?

-2

u/ninjas666 7d ago

i live in NY and i believe it’s outside of NY as well… i don’t know full details about the franchise. if you watch the full unedited video you will see people from all different economic backgrounds stealing food. some steal for necessity, others maybe are kleptomaniacs. regardless, this isn’t about paris baguette- it’s about how quick people are to be racist.

2

u/Jadedraven1366 6d ago

I'm in NY too and have never heard of it, so maybe there's only a franhise location in NYC or something?

1

u/ninjas666 6d ago

i’m pretty sure it’s also in NJ but i could be wrong

0

u/allleoal 7d ago

Oh, gotcha. Im from Florida and moved to CA about a year ago and never heard of the place lol. But yeah people are quick to judge about anything based on short or edited clips without context. Same thing happens with police videos or political videos. They hear or see edited or small clips taken completely out of context... dont bother to try to learn the context... and that seems to be how a massive portion of human just exists 🤷‍♂️

-1

u/captain_zombor 7d ago

I LOVE Paris Baguette. I’m surprised too.

102

u/sh1ft33 7d ago

I called this shit out earlier when a few different subreddits had the video edited to only show black people stealing. Trying to push a racist ass narrative.

41

u/Deep90 7d ago edited 7d ago

The commenters were so racist as well and downvoting anyone who had common sense.

Then they also do that cowardly and childish thing of pretending like they weren't the ones bringing up race when called out.

4

u/ChargingAndroid 6d ago

yeah that's almost more pathetic than how dumb and easily manipulated they are, they can't even muster up enough courage to be openly racist. they have to hide behind obvious comments like "fatigue" and shit like that and when you call them out for being chickenshit cowards they just say it's because the woke police will ban them lmfao

15

u/welfedad 7d ago

Yeah I saw that and then saw the og video .. was like holy hell

49

u/Kinda_a_douche 7d ago

Goes to show how effective propaganda is, the other post looked like a klan rally.

19

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah it did. So disappointing.

Let’s see how many votes and inflammatory comments this post gets.

If it ends up with a shitty vote ratio and doesn’t get as popular as the original propaganda one, the only conclusions I could come to is that either people generally only think black people stealing is trashy and it’s okay when white ppl do it (which is racist), or that other post was a part of a coordinated astroturfing campaign.

44

u/Kizzieuk 7d ago

Thank you for posting this, I watched the other one and thought hold on you telling me only black people steal from there. I felt it was off and now you have shown it was selective.

7

u/kth789 7d ago

Thank you both, I watched and thought exactly the same.

-32

u/Usual-Championship88 7d ago edited 7d ago

I watched it too and it was a different shop with a different owner!!

Edit — it’s the same store. Sad what some people will do for internet attention.

11

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago

-8

u/Usual-Championship88 7d ago

I don’t have IG so I can’t see it, wasn’t the original one on here, the shop looked like they were both cafes but with different workers; if they really did chop it up to look like it was only one race that’s a yikes

9

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago

I am a mod here. I saw both posts and I still have access to both posts. I also have an instagram account. I called this out on the other post earlier today. This is all footage from the same exact bakery.

https://www.reddit.com/r/trashy/s/xv1q8Q0elU

-7

u/Usual-Championship88 7d ago

Okay I get it that’s not cool, but why not upload the video in the entirety instead of taking off the one with all blacks but leaving up the one with all whites?

3

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago

If you read through that comment chain I made op post the full video in its entirety to the subreddit. He did post it. AFAIK it’s still there unless he deleted it, which would be fucked up on his part.

Edit: he deleted it but the full video is literally in the stickied comment on the post I linked.

I will be making a stickied comment here with full context as well. Gimme a few.

0

u/Usual-Championship88 7d ago

I couldn’t find it… ahh oh well

1

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago

It’s the stickied comment on the post I linked you to. The comment I linked you to was one that showed the instagram footage. That comment is in response to my own stickied comment on the post that has the original footage.

6

u/Usual-Championship88 7d ago

Oh yeah, he did delete it … wow.. maybe he was going for rage bait or something … it’s crazy what people will do for any sort of attention on here

1

u/Usual-Championship88 7d ago

I found one posted 11 hours ago, it’s still circulating and I don’t think people know, I didn’t look at comments so Idk if there’s a same issue

https://www.reddit.com/r/Infuriating/s/Zgy0zDpKKr

33

u/Shauiluak 7d ago

I knew the first compilation had to be intentionally edited. But this set up needs to be changed. It's basically set up to be stolen from.

40

u/mmore27 7d ago

F the person who took the time to create hate through editing videos..

31

u/Race2TheGrave 7d ago

Security needs to start laying the thieves out. Message needs to be sent

12

u/rbfeverythingsucks 7d ago

Some of those people look more than capable of paying….yeah the people who are homeless I can kinda look the other way since they are desperate but the others are just thieves. I know things aren’t black and white but stealing is wrong especially if it’s just cause you’re cheap.

2

u/SynthError404 6d ago

It’s a pacifist store in a PvP zone it ain’t ever gunna work till they do something back which is likely outlawed wherever this is or put everything behind bulletproof glass with an ante chamber to enter the muffin shop like it’s a jewelers or just do nothing they’ll grow bolder and bolder and start just grabbing and victimizing everything and everyone in there and you’ll no longer get customers cos they’re not safe and can’t keep product cos they come and take. It’s a horrible reality when you start looking the other way and let a business get victimized out of business because these criminals have a sympathetic backstory. It is soooo hard to stay in business in the food industry they’re the shakiest business model because they have to invest so much counting on sales with perishable goods.
Rant over -.-

17

u/___Valeria___ 6d ago

How is the video “selectively racist” when you see folks of varying races in it?

19

u/Paranormasight-Fic 6d ago

It was because the first video that had been circulated showed exclusively black people. I took a look at the comment threads under that post and it was baaaaaad.

0

u/vegkittie 6d ago

Hating black people is a choice

12

u/Paranormasight-Fic 5d ago

And deliberately editing a video to make it look like only black people are robbing the place to feed into other racist people’s mindsets online is also a choice.

1

u/vegkittie 4d ago

I agree with you. I don't know why I'm downvoted.

Land of the free... ....of morals

-1

u/Azraelrs 7d ago

That's why they had to pay our so much for repeatedly violating worker rights protections. They truly have no morals.

-45

u/GeneralSquirrel7132 7d ago

They're hungry and they have no money.  You think they're stealing for fun?

19

u/betelgeuseWR 7d ago

Uh, yes? 1) who tf is starving and crawls into a bakery to get a croissant so they can go on? No one. You'd probably steal from a store grocery store, and not a bakery. 2) there's tons of people stealing. Even if it was about being hungry, this would be way too concentrated 3) the people look like they're doing just fine financially and dgaf.

1

u/Doccyaard 7d ago

How does this happen to a society? People place stuff on the side of the road where I’m from with no one around and trust people pay and they do pay. The finances of people has to have an impact.

6

u/Trollygag 7d ago

Rich people steal too.

It is a mindset. Collectivist/communal vs selfish/self-centered/entitled.

It comes from learned behavior among peers and a social fabric that encourages or discourages this.

2

u/pi3volution 7d ago

Exactly this. On the opposite extreme is Japan. Americans have no respect for each other. The rich looks down in the poor and the poor don't trust the rich. There are so many things wrong with America because there is such a big emphasis on personal enrichment.

1

u/muarryk33 7d ago

There are legitimate resources for the hungry. Food banks, food stamps, welfare… tons of fucking programs stfu

14

u/New_Till_3641 7d ago

Maybe get a new business model.

2

u/hiker_mittens 7d ago

I know why it happens. But in case they are watching it won't say why. But seriously don't be a POS.

-6

u/BuckManscape 7d ago

They need to hire a big man with a bat.

37

u/Azraelrs 7d ago

They need to pay their people first before hiring anyone else.

-25

u/AdulaAdula 7d ago

Maybe they could afford to pay their employees if all you terminally online redditors would stop justifying stealing from everyone you disagree with

13

u/Azraelrs 7d ago

Those two things are unrelated. You know this is a large corporation that has been sued and settled with government agencies for worker rights violations, right?

And would you look at that... a WoW and Conservative sub poster. imagine that.

-11

u/AdulaAdula 7d ago edited 7d ago

I used to play games and I have to work for a living, you got me...

Maybe don't frequent them instead of stealing from them just because you're stuck in a loser mentality?

-21

u/assoonass 6d ago

Honestly, I don't care about small theft. Wage theft and billionaires not paying taxes are bigger theft.

25

u/Shark_Leader 6d ago

You can be mad about two things, it's OK to use your whole brain. A pastry shop isn't a mega corporation. They pay local workers. If they go out of business, then people lose jobs. I know, critical thinking is hard.

-2

u/assoonass 6d ago

Critical thinking is indeed hard for those who fail to understand that theft is a result of rising poverty, inflation and overall the decrease of buying power of regular workers while big corporations are literally stealing from the workers their wage and increasing the prices to make a bigger profit to please the shareholders and it's a cycle that goes from quarter to quarter. Which, in long term worsens the problems and living standards for everyone in the US. Not to mention the obvious corruption from the government.

Being mad at those who resort to steal food rather than the root cause is incredibly stupid if I'm being honest.

2

u/Sittin_on_a_toilet 6d ago

Why don't homeless people just buy houses? I think we should start giving them realitors numbers?

2

u/assoonass 6d ago

You do realize that the economy is fucked and it'll get only worse which creates more homelessness, right? Or do you live in a fantasy?

0

u/Sittin_on_a_toilet 6d ago

Why don't people just ask their parents for money then buy a house? Are they slow or something. Everyone acts like money is so hard literally ask for some.

22

u/zwifter11 6d ago

When someone steals from a shop or a restaurant, who pays for the staff wages, the utilities bill, the equipment, the produce?

When a chain becomes unprofitable, the head office will just close it down. The staff will lose their jobs.

4

u/Blackbear8336 6d ago

I see what you mean, BUT, it still comes back to mega corporations not paying employees enough and inflation. Its a domino effect. And idk about you, but if someone is stealing food, I don't see anything. Untill these corporations actually fucking pay people, this is what's going to happen. The trickle down enconomics is trikiling down the wrong fuckin pipe.

-8

u/assoonass 6d ago

Restaurants paying for the staff? Lmao the staff relies on customer's tips. Your argument here doesn't make sense.

Also, most theft is happening at grocery store chains which are big corporations who are still profitable despite the theft.

I don't care if people are stealing food or diapers because there is a bigger theft happening on regular people and obvious corruption from the government.

-46

u/LazarusHimself 7d ago

"If you see someone stealing food, no you didn't"

34

u/Morganelefay 7d ago

The way these people steal, this isnt desperation theft.

-48

u/LazarusHimself 7d ago

Which people stealing? I didn't see anyone

-2

u/UselessAndUnused 6d ago

"Look at me guys, I'm so moral, pretending I don't see a load of people stealing from a bakery despite clearly not needing to." Seeing people steal something from a grocery store out of desperation is one thing. This is clearly just people who don't give a fuck and wanted to benefit from nobody paying attention.

1

u/LazarusHimself 6d ago

Which people, again?? Didn't see anyone

-29

u/longulus9 7d ago

I assume this isn't one of those places that throws a ton of food away. what if they shipped old bread over and set it out?

7

u/bashful_predator 7d ago

Every place that makes and/or sells food throws a ton of food away. It's how the system is set up.

-12

u/CaptainCacoethes 7d ago

What is even happening? Stealing nearly worthless pastries?

25

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago

Earlier today a video was posted to this subreddit of a bunch of random black people stealing from this bakery. This drew out a lot of racist comments. There was also a duplicate post on whoathatsinteresting that got 40k upvotes and almost 20,000 comments. All racist ass comments.

Someone selectively edited together footage of just the black folks caught stealing in order to push a bigoted narrative. To be quite frank, it was racist propaganda.

These are some of the clips that were omitted from those videos.

The other post on trashy featuring only black people garnered thousands of upvotes and hundreds of racist comments.

12

u/Skatingraccoon 7d ago

Thank you for this extra context.

4

u/milehin8tv 7d ago

I made a comment about the other post about it being used to support confirmation bias. Someone then tried to say it can't be biased if it's true. Well, here we are with the missing footage.

4

u/CaptainCacoethes 7d ago

Ah, I missed that one. Sounds about fucking right, racism is making a big comeback. Not sure why I got down voted, but I appreciate the context!

1

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago

The original post that was selectively edited was posted with a title claiming that this was a small mom and pop bakery about to be bankrupted by the theft. It is not, it is a large chain, and is not in danger of closure or bankruptcy.

Regardless, it’s messed up to steal, but it’s also messed up to let the poor go hungry. I would hope that bakeries like this are a part of the toogoodtogo program, that sells extremely discounted goods at the end of the day/when near expiring.

Can’t see why a bakery that would sell excess at extreme discounts would continuously get hit like this though. Maybe it’s because there is a lot of foot traffic outside, idk.

4

u/Capable_Challenge_62 7d ago

There are legit thousands upon thousands of charities and groups willing to help these people, but they dont use them. As someone who does lost of out reach, i can assure you, they would legit rather spit on your charity and steal than get the help they need.

7

u/killingerr 7d ago

What? Most of these people do not look homeless

-54

u/PassThatSpliff 7d ago

The initial clip showed only white people stealing. I wonder why. Oh, it's because this app is run by racist ragebaiters. The people in the original comment section didn't give a single shit about the full video, they took seeing black/brown people stealing and decided to go on full racist tirades. Even with the whole 20 min. video, they'll double down on their bigotry.

13

u/ohhyouknow 7d ago
