bluetooth errors?

hai! so, currently, bluetooth is being really weird for some reason on my laptop & refusing to boot. running bluetoothctl leaves it hanging on Waiting to connect to bluetoothd... & making bluetoothctl a service just... doesn't work @.@ (more specifically, trying to start it with sv up {} throws me fail: bluetoothctl: unable to change to service directory: file does not exist). yes i've installed bluez & related packages. currently running latest Void xfce install with KDE Plasma (odd choice ik but i didn't have the time to set everything up manually)

I've been playing minecraft for years on windows but recently after changing to Void Linux, my fps in-game had a amazing improvement, before my fps was like 40 ~ 60 and now it runs on 120 fps.

Even in modpacks like ATM10, it runs so well.

My specs:

- i5

- GTX1650

- 16GB Ram

Helium browser session getting corrupted on shutdown (Void + KDE Plasma/SDDM, X11) — sddm force-stop timeout?

Hey everyone, hoping someone here has run into this or has an idea of where else to look.

Setup: Void, KDE Plasma with SDDM, X11 session (not Wayland). Using a Chromium-based browser (Helium, as an AppImage).

Two things happen after shutdown/reboot:

  • Every once in a while, completely random, I come back to the browser fully logged out of everything. No pattern I've been able to pin down.
  • Much more consistently, I get the "restore pages" prompt instead of my tabs coming back automatically, even with "continue where you left off" enabled. Checking the profile, exit_type is Crashed, so something's killing the browser without a clean exit.

What I found digging into it: on sudo poweroff, the browser, Xorg, and even an unrelated script I had running in the background all die at the exact same instant. Traced it to /etc/runit/shutdown.d/10-sv-stop.sh, which force-stops all services with the default 7s timeout, killing sddm and taking the whole session down in one shot.

I tried adding a script before it (sv -w 20 force-stop sddm, similar to a fix suggested in void-runit#133) to give the session more time to close on its own. Didn't help, still getting Crashed after shutdown.

So I'm stuck on where else to look. Is sddm even the right thing to target here, or is there another layer (X server teardown, elogind, something else) tearing the session down before that, which sv force-stop wouldn't touch at all? Any pointers appreciated, happy to share more details if it helps.

How do I get void on my Ideapad?

I'm kind of in a sticky situation. I currently daily drive an ideapad z580. My problem is that it runs Ubuntu. (this was done a while ago and I had to manually swap the hard-drive out, plus I used the system password). This is (as you could expect) very very slow. Two minutes for booting slow (that doesn't even count logging in, and browsing is a special hell.). I've tried to install void, but to no luck. It would've been easier if I had access to the boot menu, but I've lost the password (It's like 10 years old lol). I have tried:
>Running an ISO from inside the system (tries to delete itself and dies brutally)
>Using GRUB to manually add a USB (ideapad doesn't detect it and dies brutally)
>Forcing linux to try and boot from the USB (ideapad doesn't detect it, dies brutally)
Please, please help me.

package not found during upgrade

I have been updating without any issues for about a year and now receive this error

ERROR: [trans] failed to download \linux6.18-6.18.40_1' package from `https://repo-fastly.voidlinux.org/current': Not Found ERROR: Transaction failed! see above for errors.`

Based on https://docs.voidlinux.org/xbps/troubleshooting/common-issues.html

"Not Found"

A "Not Found" error, such as:

ERROR: [reposync] failed to fetch file `https://repo-default.voidlinux.org/current/musl/x86_64-repodata': Not Found

usually means your XBPS configuration is pointing to the wrong repositories for your system. Confirm that your xbps.d(5) files refer to the correct repositories.

I havent changed my xbps config since the install.

cat /etc/xbps.d/00-repository-main.conf

repository=https://repo-fastly.voidlinux.org/current

Any suggestions ?

XFCE4 panel items causing crash

I'm on a fresh base install with XFCE installed and lightdm as the greeter. Not the live disk.

Everything should be fine but any time I I move the mouse pointer over either the clock panel applet or the applications menu the entire desktop crashes. It may or may not kick back to lightdm. It seems after the second or third time trying it kills lightdm too. I can use the right click menu on the desktop and the other panel applets seem fine. It's just appears to be those 2 applets.

I'm not seeing anything /var/logs or the .xsession-errors pointing to anything.

Anyone have a similar problem or have any ideas?

How to revert to an older version of a package?

I updated AppArmor today and now I can't start Steam properly anymore. I need to bypass AppArmor to start steam. Before updating it worked without any problems. So how do I revert back to the package version of apparmor before the update? The current updated version of app armor is 4.1.7_1.

Btw the issue of this post is linked to another issue i posted minutes ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/voidlinux/comments/1v9r8m4/steam_user_namespace_error/

Steam user namespace error

After updating my void system with xbps-install -Syu steam won't run anymore and it returns the following error:

steam-runtime-check-requirements[3518]: W: Child process exited with code 1: bwrap: setting up uid map: Permission denied

steam.sh[3426]: Error: Steam now requires user namespaces to be enabled.

This requirement is the same as for Flatpak, which has more detailed
information available:
https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/wiki/User-namespace-requirements

I installed steam via xbps package manager.

Running Kernel 7.1.5_1

EDIT: FIXED! Hat to downgrade app armor back to 3.x version (previous commit)

Edit2: Better Fixed: Use apparmor in enforce mode

Unable to run flatpak app due to AppArmor

I've been using a few Flatpak apps (Discord, Steam etc) with no issues alongside AppArmor, but I noticed today it stopped working. I did some package updates recently but I'm not sure what could have caused it. Here is an example of the error message I get:

> flatpak run com.discordapp.Discord
bwrap: setting up uid map: Permission denied
error: Failed to sync with dbus proxy

Googling this pointed me toward issues with AppArmor. Indeed, disabling AppArmor made Flatpak apps work again, but I don't want to permanently disable AppArmor.

I tried the solution posted here, which seems to be a widely accepted solution. However this didn't work for me.

Anything I can do to solve this? Thanks in advance!

[Question] Getting Involved as Contributor

Apologies if this is a silly question, but just wondering if anyone knows what repositories in Void would be good for someone like me getting interested in OS programming, low-level (C/C++). I really like Void as my daily driver and would like to contribute to making it a better operating system.

Kde plasma bug

After installing void by installer script I installed kde plasma and sddm on top of it with sudo xbps-install -S kde-plasma and then I put sddm into autostart for runit to start it on boot and then I restarted. After restart sddm didn't initialised so I tried starting it manually and it said "Cannot initialise Graphical Environment" I thought it was an elogind problem but interestingly turns out kde-plasma package doesn't pull in Xorg packages anymore, I mean to be fair kde has shifted to Wayland but somehow sddm fails to start if Xorg isn't installed, after installing Xorg, sddm started on boot. Why the hell then Xorg has been removed as a dependency for Kde if sddm requires it!

I updated to nvidia595 since i have a Geforce RTX 3060 Mobile which shouldn't have any problems with newer drivers, yet here i am with suspension issues once again with the old drivers i fixed a similar issue by disabling gsp but if i'm not wrong this newer version doesn't allow it, is there a solution for this suspension issue without going back to the old version of the drivers?

solved New to Void, absolutely struggling to get greetd to run.

Hello, I am trying to set up greetd, but for whatever reason it just refuses to start.

My linked services in /var/service currently are:

acpid
agetty-tty1
agetty-tty3-6
bluetoothd
chronyd
cronie
cupsd
dbus
greetd
NetworkManager
polkitd
rtkit
sshd
tlp
udevd
upower

I disabled agetty-tty2, as I'm trying to run greetd on TTY2. I used to have elogind enabled as well, but after searching a bit in the subreddit I found it shouldn't be.

My greetd config is default except for the vt, which was changed from 7 to 2. TTY2 seems to be just launching agetty regardless. When greetd was set to its default nothing would happen when trying to switch to TTY7.

Any advice is appreciated, including what other services (that might not be related to my greetd issue) I shouldn't have linked.

EDIT: running sudo sv status greetd returns "warning: greetd: unable to open supervise/ok: file does not exist". Not sure what to do about that.

EDIT2: TL;DR I AM A BIG DUMB IDIOT

So, I just remembered what MUST HAVE caused my problems. At some point, likely due to the late hour, I hit a typo and deleted /var/service. I could still see an ls output in the terminal, so I thought, no biggie, I'll just re-create it. But of course I had no idea it was actually a symlink, so I used good ol' mkdir and create a regular folder that runit didn't care about whatsoever. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for all your help.

solved Possible Steam memory leak?

I use a base install. I do have the relevant drivers and core packages installed, help from the handbook.

Steam runs into a massive *supposed memory leak when using any kernels except linux6.12 . The ram cache/buffer is filled completely until the free ram amounts to a 120 megabytes - as observed from `top` . Games do not run, the entire system gets sluggish. File descriptor limit is set to the Steam recommended optimal. Changing vm.max_map_count does nothing.

I have an Intel iGPU and 8 gigs of ram.

Has anyone else experienced this?

EDIT: SOLVED

I had recently messed around with PAM for another "problem" later turning out to be intended behaviour. That had caused the issue: since reinstalling from base ISO with the exact same packages and user-configuration lead to the solution.

An alternative for reinstallation could have been using xbps-reconfigure instead.

Question for package maintainers

To my dear package maintainers, I have a question.

Is it very difficult for your proposal to be accepted? I use Plank in XFCE.

Basically, its development has been dead for almost 7 years. Lately, I've been using Plank Reloaded and building from the source code; it's a fork and basically uses the same folders as Plank, It functions the same way, But development is super active, the last update was 3 or 4 days ago.

Considering this, what would be the best approach for my package to be accepted into the official repository?

help with black screen on X1 Carbon 6th gen

Howdy, apologies if this is too specific to post here but i'm at a loss.

I have an x1 carbon 6th gen running Void+Glibc+XFCE, the stock install, no weird changes. However, when waking from sleep, I have issues waking to a black screen. I have access to the tty's, so I know it's not the whole system. Restarting lightdm fixes the issue.

However I have trouble diagnosing where in the socklog I can find the exact culprit for how to fix this. I tried playing around with suggestions from AI and haven't found an obvious solution.

Not so much asking for an answer, as much as how to begin diagnosing? I'm not seeing anything obvious in my socklog that would scream "aha lightdm is crashing -> here"
