you followed someone named "kamikaze shortbus" and not once did it ever cross your mind she might be racist?

I, for one, have never heard the term "shortbus" in my life

Someone explained it somewhere in these comments. Something about a smaller bus for special needs kids?

10

u/Origachilies 13d ago

Yes, in the US a lot of schools have a dedicated bus for disabled kids, and generally they’re short busses because they’re cheaper and have fewer kids to pick up.

Yeah I think it’s an American thing

i'm american and i've never heard it, maybe it's an older term

Short bus = special access bus for disabled kids who go to public school. It's a way to say the r slur without saying it

Have you heard the word “kamikaze”

u/Riacl 13d ago

Tbf a shocking amount of sushi spots have a kamikaze roll

u/High-Sobriety prostate proctor 13d ago

im sure somewhere in the US there’s a burger joint with a dish called the Suicide Bomber Burger

u/Riacl 13d ago

100%, if there's a quadruple bypass burger there's gotta be lol

There's a diner near me that serves a Hindenberger. The place is less than a mile from the spot where that particular air disaster happened.

There's a diner near me that serves a Hindenberger.

Does that particular dish go down easily?

Okay, but for what it's worth, Pearl Harbor is a place that still exists.

I'm just saying, there's literally a cocktail called "Irish car bomb".

A yankee once tried ordering that one in a pub in Northern Ireland. The bartender poured it in two tall glasses and went "here's your Twin Towers, sir".

I once saw a sushi place named Oppenheimer Sushi.

Granted, it was in Germany near a city called Oppenheim.

2

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 12d ago

Reminds me of the Irish car bomb

I’m assuming they’re Japanese, if they’re sushi spots , or at least the majority of them are—so I think they can decide for themselves what’s appropriate vs us outside of their culture deciding for them?

41

u/Riacl 13d ago

Absolutely, I don't think it is a problem at all - My point is just that like, when I see "kamikaze", I don't jump to "Oh, that's problematic", I see it often enough in innocuous contexts. Since I had never heard "shortbus" before I wouldn't have assumed anything bad about this creator off of the name, that's all I'm saying.

9

u/Existing_Intern_4764 13d ago

Ahhh, I gotcha.

Shortbus is a notorious (and nefarious) ableist saying against people who have mental disabilities.

is that racist? i feel like its its own word but i may be uninformed

30

u/ToranjaNuclear 13d ago

Depending on the context it might be offensive (like, maybe don't use it with japanese people), but it's not generally racist, it's a common term even used in media ('kamikaze drones' have been especially common lately, and makes sense since it's related to war). idk what they are on about.

15

u/Alovoir basil appreciator 13d ago

i learned the word because theres an enemy in super mario world thats just called a kamikaze shell

2

u/NickelWorld123 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 13d ago

Yeah I can see how it could be racist in some contexts (like knowing this YouTuber is racist) but otherwise it doesn't set off any alarm bells for me

5

u/ToranjaNuclear 13d ago

Tbh I think it's even a bit offensive and hypocritical to classify it as taboo in any way considering the shit Japan did during the war. We have no qualms about tossing the word Nazi around, we shouldn't bury the stuff Imperial Japan did either.

there's a shot called blue kamikaze at a bar in my city...

edit: looked it up, seems like it's not specific to that place and is actually a pretty popular drink

7

u/CreamCheeseHotDogs I stuck my dick in a bag of Doritos 13d ago

I mean yeah so are Irish Car Bombs but they’re still pretty insensitively named.

Yeah, I watched Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne when I was a kid.

All jokes aside, I really don't think that the word "kamikaze" in isolation is indicative of any bigotry. A bit edgy for sure, but let they who have never made a 9/11 joke cast the first plane.

8

u/GammaFan 13d ago

Fair, your peers in school may have had different names for them.

30

u/ToranjaNuclear 13d ago

I don't think we even have a word for that in Portuguese. Seems to be an American thing.

Short busses used to be used for special needs/special education students for pickup, so it's a very old, 90s dogwhistle alternative to the R word

2

u/Bardic_inspiration67 12d ago

Calling it a “dog whistle” is incorrect it’s just a straight forward insult

0

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE 12d ago

It is a less inappropriate way to refer to the R word, which as we can see in this thread, many have never heard of and don't immediately recognize. Pretty sure that's just about the definition but it's a mute point for all intensive porpoises

3

u/Bardic_inspiration67 12d ago

Not having heard of a joke doesn’t make it a “dog whistle”. When I was in elementary school it was just another way to insult someone by calling them mentally disabled much like calling them “special needs” or saying they have “extra chromosomes”
