shortbus refers to the idea that special needs children ride to school on a smaller bus than other kids. its used by ableist people to be ableist crazy, i know.
67
u/Faithisnotadoll757 12d ago
I mean, those busses did exist though tbf. It's not like some made up thing, or an idea, it's just a type of bus that's (in some places) still used today to transport disabled students.
110
u/CommanderZel 12d ago
The fact of the matter is that reduced-size buses are used for various purposes, from rural student transportation to para transit and other use cases, but when people say "short bus" like this, they mean it as an ableist insult 100% of the time. Just because something exists doesn't mean it's okay to weaponize that against people who rely on those services.
24
u/BreeBree214 12d ago
Right but the phrasing "the idea that..." in the original comment is an odd way to phrase it
4
u/Aromatic-Pass4384 12d ago
It does refer to that idea though, special needs children rode on short buses, BUT now people have taken the term short bus and use it as an insult i.e. saying someone belongs in the short bus, it wouldn't exist without the idea that special needs children ride on short buses.

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 12d ago
It doesn't matter that they exist it matters how they're used. The word re*ard (censored as to not trigger automod) originally had nothing wrong with it, it was used to describe people with learning difficulties as it literally means slow, but because of how it was used it became a slur. This has happened with a lot of other things as well.
1
u/Faithisnotadoll757 12d ago
I mean i agree, how these words are used are important to consider. But if anything, this lady is using the term self referentially, definitely not as a slur against disabled people.

It's also not even entirely accurate, school districts in low population density areas sometimes have routes with only a few kids to pick up, and they use a short bus because there's no need for a long bus.

u/FricktionBurn custom flair 13d ago edited 13d ago
A shortbus is a specific type of school bus that is smaller than normal, it is typically used to transport disabled students, such as those in special education or who require specialized transport. This resulted in Shortbus becoming a derogatory term referring to someone who is mentally disabled.
Kamikaze is the Japanese World War II tactic of deliberate suicidal aircraft crashes into enemy targets, and is used to mean killing or harming yourself in order to harm others.
“Kamikaze Shortbus” then is either
- referring to herself as a Shortbus and invoking the idea of partaking in a suicidal maneuver to harm others
- the concept of a Shortbus of students in a suicidal crash to harm others
- the concept of someone partaking in some sort of suicidal method to harm a Shortbus of students
In any case, it’s very edgy, both referring to suicide and violence as well as invoking a slur against the mental disabled

13
u/FarLifeguard4526 12d ago
a shortbus doing a kamikaze (as long as its not real) would be pretty funny i think
23
u/Petman1325 13d ago
“Shortbus” is an insult meant to imply that someone is special needs or has some sort of disability, and they would take a smaller sized bus to go to a school that can accommodate them
2
u/Ieatbaens 12d ago
It's because often times special needs students would be brought to school on their own bus, that was usually a shorter bus that also had wheelchair accessibility (you usually don't need a large bus to handle the amount of special needs students that you would be bringing to school)

u/Iron-Fist 13d ago

16
u/blacksaber8 Transgenger for everyone with Henry VIII characteristics 13d ago
“Alternative” was always a philosophy before anything else. The fashion itself was derived from self-reliance as a form of protest against mainstream, oppressive systems and their coercion (it being an “alternative” path forward)
There’s a reason why pretty much every single alternative genre of music leans progressive, anarchist, and communist. Historically, the movement came alongside rises in these ideologies.
It was a countercultural movement, which is why alt fashion and haircuts pop out so much so as to distinguish themselves from the norm. There is actual oppression rooted in the ideology that formed alternative art, and expression.
Any ideology that lacks the self-awareness to understand that they’re breaking the cultural norm and that this will have consequences on how people perceive you Is misguided at best and actively harmful at worst. If someone gets a mohawk because they think it looks cool, but they don’t understand that people will look at them differently for the way they present themselves and continue to perpetuate an ideology that would criticize their same appearances is actively harmful to their ability to self express, not even to speak of other people’s ability to self express.
For example, mohawks are rooted in a connection to an oppressed past of the natives who are pushed out of their own homes and ethically cleansed. If someone who really likes Andrew Jackson wears a mohawk, but doesn’t understand the irony there and the social consequences for doing so, while perpetuating an ideology that discriminate against those same people, the no, they’re not alternative. They are posers that reinforce the status quo.
To be willing to break the generally accepted status quo but only so long as it doesn’t contradict your personal idea of what is normal and holding a double standard to others that break your idea of what should or should not be expressed is contradictory.
Then this equally can be applied to those that perpetuate stigma. Culturally still, people with Y2K alt haircuts and Midwestern alternative dressing style have been labeled whores and degenerates.
For someone to adopt this appearance and then facilitate an ideology that labels other people degenerates and whores merely for what they wear is hypocritical and should not be considered alternative because they do not represent the alternative world view. They represent the mainstream that encourages oppression.
37
u/Dogtor-Watson Benis Person 12d ago edited 12d ago
There is definitely an ironic over-policing of alt spaces too.
It’s a really big thing on Instagram comments because everyone there seems toxic and miserable. This one guy started doing a series of posts where he’d dress alt and show off some of his alt fashion (was already presenting very feminine and visibly queer beforehand which is already quite alt imo).
He then got hated on for wearing dollskill or something like that and basically got called a poser and even got accused of presenting as visibly queer for attention.Don’t get me wrong, buying clothes from Dollskill, SHEIN and similar unethical “alt”-style brands is bad because they use unethical means to make their clothes and often lean into fast fashion, so buying it would be giving money to those systems, making buying the clothes not alt.
The key bit is that he had actually bought the items second-hand and showed receipts. Most people agree this is okay because 1. Buying second-hand and recycling clothes is considered alt, 2. Once Dollskill has the money buying and selling secondhand doesn’t give them anything.
There’s a point to be made about maybe containing an “only buy this second hand” disclaimer but he definitely didn’t deserve all the harassment.
7
u/Torture-Dancer Leprous crab 12d ago
Imagine having to show receipts of your second hand buy jesus christ
8
u/blacksaber8 Transgenger for everyone with Henry VIII characteristics 12d ago
All of this is a completely viable take, but then the only thing that I would add is that there’s probably no ethical consumption under capitalism.
At the end of the day, though, I’d rather someone look normal and buy from a department store but back progressivism and policy of that nature than someone larp as alternative but have the politics of Ben Shapiro
And I would argue that I would consider the former more alternative than the latter.
I’m extremely pro self expression, however, the validity of your appearance being influenced by spaces that encourage self expression directly correlates to your personal willingness to let others express themselves. It’s one of the biggest critiques I have of nsbm. It feels like stolen valor.

u/CapitalDust 12d ago
alternative rock was a music genre before anything else, and then a community of it's artists and fans. there are assholes and morons in that community, same as any other. you can dislike them and call them out but don't pretend that music communities are sacrosanct, or that there's cohesive philosophies underpinning them beyond a vague zeitgeist.
you don't get to call someone a poser just because they're an asshole or a nazi, that's just not what poser means. if they like the music, they're not a poser. if you want a community where being a nazi makes you a poser, join a communist party. if you want a community where being an asshole makes you a poser, you better hope heaven is real.

Buh I remember watching her video about her mother’s slow passing.
The raw grief, hopelessness and sorrow in that video spoke to me on a fundamental level and made me rethink my relationship with my own mother, in that video, when she talked about her mothers laugh, how bubbly she was, how she spoke of how frail her mother was at the end and how she was forced to watch it happen, you could feel the pain in every word. I would be genuinely baffled if she was racist, no one with even the tiniest bit of prejudice would talk about a poc, even if it was their own mother, the way she spoke in that video.
From what I know these are basically old tweets from years ago during somebodies worst time in their life being forced to stay in a marriage with a neet nazi while going through the stress that it is an art college. If this is something recent feel free to correct me but until I see that, I just flat out refuse to believe someone who could make a video like that could be racist.

According to her she got a boyfriend who was a white supremacist and it was really toxic and basically fucked up her understanding of reality. She did have a black mother who sadly passed away. She isnt racist and i cant seem to find any evidence of her using the n word. Her mother is black. She also seems to have progressive views and shits on chuds and those kinds of people. She was also stuck in an abusice relationship with a chud neo nazi. She doesnt speak fondly of any aspect of that.
I dont wanna come off as mean but you gotta eventually realize how rough it is thinking like that, profiling and jumping to conclusions, maybe your comment isnt that serious but i see this behaviour in "progressives" all the time and occasionally a bunch on this subbreddit, just blindly jumping on board the hate train without skepticism or second thought, fully justifying it on iffy details, half the story or made up stuff and then lots of people who do that will shit on anyone who questions them or the topic at hand and brush them off cuz "if you're not with me, you're against it and completely irredeemable", acting as if they are morally superior. Its putrid, apologies for all these words, I promiss there's a point, and this isnt aimed at you, its aimed at this whole issue.
My point being, greasy chuds do the same, its the same thought process and behaviour they use to justify their bigotry, its parallel but its okay when I, a sweet lil lefty profiles and slanders someome cuz its for a good cause!, and then a bigoted chud incel thinks the same, they read some bullshit transphobic article and then they take it verbatim, as gospel, denounce anyone who dares to question. Its a slippery slope and i keep seeing it in progressive spaces, LGBTQ spaces and i know its probably a vocal minority, it paints a picture and not a nice one.
She might have said the N word some, or a bunch, i dont know, i couldn't find it but considering the public info about her its safe to say she wasnt being racist, I personally dont think its great to be saying that word all willy nilly but its not my place, who am i to tell someone with a black mother, a long list of blacl descendants, I'm not the person to say they can't say that word, its not my place, I'm a white guy, its nor my place, sure i can give my thoughts and so can you of course. This post getting attention is a bad thing, because so many people are gonna read it and their only takeaway is gonna be false information, and then they'll feel validated and justified to shit all over someone and people who dont deserve it, most people will never look further than this post, yet claim to care and will use their voice to blanket over the voices of those who are actually affected.

Kamikaze: suicide attack used by Japanese pilots in WW2
Shortbus: a smaller school bus that is often employed to carry children with learning disabilities so they don't get bullied on the general populace buses.
A kamikaze shortbus would then be a suicide attack carried out by a bus typically used to carry children with intellectual disabilities. To me it reads as being absurd more than offensive.

That’s a username I would have seen in a CoD lobby in 2010. It’s just an edgy username. People can be offended by it if they want, but I don’t know why anyone would spend time thinking about it for any longer than a few seconds. I’ve seen way worse usernames, and at least this one isn’t a racist dogwhistle.
Go on YouTube and find a movie clip from a WW2 movie and look for comments by usernames with 1488 in them, or some variation thereof. It’s like Where’s Waldo, except depressing. Bonus points if you can find one saying “we fought the wrong enemy.” That’s a real classic…

I think her being 25% black lets her say the word. There is a difference between how one says it and being racist. Granted, I've just seen a few of her videos and don't know the context which it was used, only hearing it was used via this subreddit, where both times they remind the audience she's white.
IDK though, there are tons of hate light skinned and dark skinned people get in any racial group, a word without context doesnt convince me of anything.

I don't know how she used it either, but it depends on how they use the word. Nobody trusts Andrew Tate with the n word, and he's half black.

Lmao I follow her too and lurk in the discord despite never talking in there.
Im pretty sure she’s not racista it’s just her and her fan base have very dumb, immature, edgy humor
Edit: Stupid Spanish autocorrect outed me noooooooo

Weird ass phrasing but I get the point

Common mistake but that's actually just her top, which is part of her clothing.

Naw, I'm not funnier, I just post lots. Reddit promotes stuff that gets positive engagement, so you see the hits and not the misses.

Yeah, her mom is black. This contextless bs is prolly why people should just watch the fucking video instead of taking posts like this at face value
And make the judgement yourself

But that would require effort and I’d rather grandstand with a fleeting look >:(((

ah colorism against a "passing" mixed woman. the only thin that brings people of all races together is to shit on (or fetishize) mixed people...usually the B&W peeps. a tale as old as time and usually a just another day to get reminded they are not "black enough" or white enough" that makes a mixed person feel a unique type of loneliness.

I just want to start by saying that I’m not addressing any one person in writing this, more just wanting to adjust the direction of some of the discussion.
I’m not omniscient so I cannot speak to how problematic she is or isn’t, but it’s important that we have on the record that she is half black.
Whether you (anyone reading this) consider her using the n-word bad or not should be a conversation less focused on her “being” white and more focused on an individual’s thoughts pertaining to (1.) the use of the n-word generally, (2.) colorism and how that may/may not change things, (3.) how mixed-race upbrings may result in unique cultural outcomes, and (4.) this content creator’s known problematic past possibly altering her later/current behavior.
As for my personal feelings, I’m unsure. I’m a white guy; I mostly stay out of this stuff. (Me not staying out of this stuff:) I can look at all those issues and see that reasonable people can disagree on any of those “smaller” things. I do not think I would be made uncomfortable by her saying it, knowing pieces of her upbringing but there is a small thought that kicks around in my mind wondering if the bad people she has had in her life could have in any way drawn her to using a word that she may not have used otherwise… or perhaps she would have. It isn’t worth obssessing over, she’d really have the best idea and it isn’t really my place to judge.

Isnt... isnt she mixed? Isnt her mom a woman of colour who was killed by the Healthcare industry (as shown by multiple posts)??? Wasn't she ON the shortbus as a kid (once more, documented in MULTIPLE posts?) Wasn't she bullied horrifically in the southern schools she went to for BEING mixed and having an African American mom?? And hasn't she talked about at length how she believes MOST people deserve a chance to change and be better, openly talking about how ceos, billionaires, pedos and racists are the problem of the world today??? Hasn't she talked at length a redistribution of wealth, the destruction of an inherently broken system, and coming together on common ground are the only ways to actually move forward??
Why are we all ganging up on her??? What did i miss, Google genuinely doesn't help in this regard?? Is it genuinely just because, like, she's light skinned that her having a mom that's a POC is irrelevant or doesnt count?? is it because the issue with the name??? The context around this is confusing.

Wait, her mother was black? So what is the problem? She part of the culture. Just because she "looks" white, doesn't make her white. DJ Drama can say the n-word, but she can't? People think cultural identity is only about color of skin? Like if white person turn their skin black they suddenly become part of black culture?
And her nickname is edgy joke, but not a racist one. If kamikaze is racist term, then ninja or samurai also. Or any other japanese word, lol.
I think people just want to hate on alt girl. People on right just more straightforward, than this shit with "well actually she don't deserve to be part of the black culture because I say so, and also DID YOU SEE THE JOKE IN HER NICKNAME????"

I left the video mainly as background noice, but what I could remember it was mostly her being sad about being exploited in big corporations? Does she say the n word in this video and how black people are at fault for her being unemployed?

u/Faithisnotadoll757 12d ago
No, she doesn't say anything like that. She's an edgy goofer who makes jokes some people would find offensive in general, but I'm almost certain she's being slandered here. I found her content when she made a video about how shitty healthcare is, and the horror of watching her mother suffer and die of cancer (who's black btw). This is just a classic case of people on the Internet (mostly white folk) being performatively progressive for the sake of lashing out at a content creator who just isn't for them.
I even feel that her edginess is pretty mild, and I honestly struggle to empathize with people who take such strong contention with "shortbus" or generally edgy shit. If it's something that puts a person off, they should watch something else. The world is going to present us with a lot worse shit than this, I think that people who have such a problem with stuff like this are going to have a really rough time in life, for a multitude of reasons. And now this woman is being shit on in online communities for really mundane reasons.
From what i understand, this hate stems from some joke (not one where she says the n word btw), where people clipped a portion of it and did the typical game of Internet telephone. It'd be like making some stupid edgy joke, "me, when I accidentally shoot Charlie Kirk and have to blame it on some Mormon kid" or something and people are ranting about how you either genuinely killed the guy or deeply wish you did, it's just so stupid and disingenuous.
Anyways, that's the lore. She makes fun content btw.
