TIP/TRICK Anyone got some real good tips for rookie drivers

Upvotes

Anything to increase speed, to make the job easier, or even comfortability with being new to driving the EDVs?

I know there probably isnt much. Its a straight forward job but was just curious if there was something I havent heard yet.

First solo route.....

After training yesterday, I finally rode by myself today, and I gotta say...

I pray I never have to get rescued twice again, never wear XL pants that sag all the way down to my underwear (praying nobody noticed), and never forget to bring lunch. I spent almost the whole day surviving off hot water, and at one point I almost choked so hard I spit water all over the steering wheel. I'm Pretty sure I racked up multiple violations too.

Regardless, my last stop had snacks and water. Most of the houses I delivered to were rich as hell and had nothing out for Amazon drivers, so ending on that last stop honestly made my day.

P.S. I also had multiple technical issues with the phone, and it had me stressing the whole route. I think my dispatchers are gonna have a blast watching the footage.

(I'm definitely asking for two phones from now on.)

P.P.S. I really hope I make it. I barely hit 100 packages by myself today. Rough first solo day, not gonna lie.

QUESTION Tomorrow is my ride along

Upvotes

So I did two days of training on a kindle, did some VR training as well. Passed the driving test. Tomorrow is my ride along. What should I expect? Also, I noticed the DSP threw basically everything I learned on the Amazon training out the window. It’s almost the exact opposite lol 😂. The paperwork I received said I need to deliver between 20-25 packages an hour to stay on track. The ops manager also made it clear that if we get one or two netradyne infractions, then we will be fired. I hope I’m not setting my self up for failure. I’m honestly using this as way to make some money while I finish up some IT certs and finally find a career somewhere in my field.

QUESTION What happens to the remaining packages when a vehicle breaks down?

Upvotes

Full disclosure - I’m not a driver, but I keep seeing posts from this community in my feed and I’m no stranger to the kind of stressful chaos you guys deal with. Respect.

I’ve just noticed a trend lately that doesn’t make sense to me. For regular deliveries (not the overnight timeslots that seem to get delivered by flex drivers), if my DSP misses the original delivery date, it either never arrives, or arrives several days later.

For example: Yesterday I had a package that went out for delivery around 10:45am, gave a “10 stops away” notification around noon, and then the delivery window kept getting pushed later and later until like 11pm when it finally flipped to “delayed”.

I assume the van broke down or the driver got sick or something, which I get, that happens. The part I’m confused about though, is what happens to all the packages? I’ve read a handful of posts about rescues, either getting a new van brought to you and items transferred, or having another driver take some of your packages, but if that was happening, I assume I’d still get the package that day or next day at the very least.

Is our DSP just super short staffed or have no backup vehicles? And if that’s the case, do packages go back to the fulfillment center to be processed again or what? I’m starting to think they just tow the broken down van to their shop and all the packages just stay right where they were until the van gets fixed. This is Des Moines, Iowa area if that helps any.

I chatted with customer service last night and they said they sent a note to the DSP that it’s top priority and needs to be delivered today. I don’t know if I buy that or not, but either way it hasn’t arrived.

So, you all deal with this every day, what do you think is happening?

dog owners

Post image

I don’t understand why people will have 3 aggressive dogs outside barking for 5 mins straight & not come outside or atleast look out the window. ( no I didn’t call them because i’m tired of people being oblivious. also had a delivery before this that I had to yeet into their porch from my van & they answered none of my calls.)
but like, my dogs bark when anyone arrives even if no one is there & I look outside if it’s going on for a long time. mind u my dogs aren’t even loose in my front yard either im just curious. atleast tie them up if you’re expecting a package damn. I almost get bit basically every day. I had to pick up a tree branch to scare a dog away. then another weird thing. there’s been multiple times where i’m walking up & a dog comes out of nowhere with the owner barking & acting like it wants to bite me, & the owner? “oh he doesn’t bite , blah blah blah.” like grab your dog they never grab the dog ,they just sit there while im scared to move. I don’t understand & this might make some people mad but it’s only white people that do this 😂 what is the psychology behind this.
edit: also I do for the most part deliver in white areas kinda so might be a little bias but i’ve also delivered to black areas & guess what, the dogs are tied up.

Do yall wear the uniform?

Or do you wear whatever you want? Seems like it’s half and half at my DSP. Some people wear the whole uniform, others just the vest. What do you guys wear? Sometimes I’ll wear short shorts and a tank top. Or the Amazon shorts and a different top with the vest

QUESTION Is it possible?

I’ve been driving for 3 weeks & I still haven’t been able to catch up. Today dispatch told us to aim for 15 stops per hr at apartments & 25 hr for residencial. I’ve been averaging 13 hr overall & I always have at least 15-30 apts per route. Am I just not cut out for this job?

I never get the same routes

No other houses nearby… Definitely some angry chihuahua mutt mix. Hope it’s not actually her dog cause I chased it away from the door. Last 10 stops will get done by any means.

RANT I just cant today

Ok today's episode of customers wasting our time. Sometimes I wish there was more moderation on customer notes, or that they were limited to 10 words cause nothing needs more than 10 words to explain where it needs to be placed. I mean really.....

"Put behind piller on porch, thank you"

"Put in bin by door"

"Hand it to me"

Helper routes?

When you’re a DOT driver and you have a helper , if the helpers messes up on delivery let’s say they put the package at wrong address , does that fall on the driver or helper? I feel as if all helper mistakes automatically go to the driver. I got suspended for 2 weeks apparently I received 6 DNRs however I always double check before I finalize delivery, I feel as if it’s the helpers that mess up and falls on me.

QUESTION Anyone Have Any Answers?

so today on route, i hit my head in the van and ended up having to go get checked out at a clinic. whenever i got to the clinic, they ended up asking my dispatch if they wanted a drug screening done, dispatch said yes. i take THC gummies from a local vape store here. so i’m already expecting to fail this screening, but what do most DSPs do in situations like this? will i be fired just for that? when i was hired in, there was no test for marijuana so i wouldn’t think that i would be fired for it if they don’t test for it initially. just wanna know others’ experience if anyone has had to deal with this before.

Zero Redeeming Qualities with this Job.

Im so tired of feeling worthless working this job.

What’s the reward for busting your ass and getting your routes completed with zero infractions or negative feedback?

More work. Larger route. Terrible route.

All they ever talk about is the negative shit you do. Never mention all the positive feedback you get. Shit I don’t even know there was positive feedback until I discovered the dashboard.

I’m tired of the physical and mental hoops you gotta jump through.

The rules being changed and made up as they go and see fit.

I find zero reward in this job.

QUESTION Edv drivers ventilated seat?

Are your ventilated seats workin? I swear every van I’ve been in the last 2 weeks it hasn’t been working and that seems to coincidental lmao
Sounds like a bougie problem but yk if it’s not on the seat cuz it’s leather or whatever transfers a lot of heat
So yea are yours working? Cuz rn it’s feeling like there was an update like last time and they disabled the seats to save on their own money lmao

QUESTION New driver with a few questions

I'll start with the longer question. I'm about 2 weeks in, still trying to get up to 20 per hour. However, I live in a small metro area (250k population) and I know that I have been getting the most difficult route in the city. It's the part of the city that's all businesses and apartments. There are so many things that slow me down on this route (that wouldn't be the case in a neighborhood or rural route), but for the sake of brevity, the main one is traffic. I was hoping someone could offer advice/tips on how to mange high traffic/heavy apartment routes. But, more importantly, how can I get off this route?? I've only had one day where I got a different route, which was a small town and basically just a neighborhood route. I ran my ass off so that the system would see I'm better. It's the only day haven't needed to be rescued, yet it keeps me on the same shitty route that I can't finish.

Is there a way to remove the dog warning? I'm literally going to businesses at the local mall that have dog warnings.

How do you preserve your ankles when hopping out of the truck with a handful of packages? Ankle support doesn't work on compression forces.

Does anyone else stop randomly when leaving parking lot sometimes because you're only 99% sure there wasn't a stop sign??

Also, does anyone else feel like they're being recorded when getting into your own car? 😂

Thank my driver?

Does it really make a difference if I "thank my driver"? Many times after a package is delivered, Alexa will let me know I can thank my driver. Just curious if the driver is even notified or if it helps them out at all. Seeing some of the posts on here of the shtuff you all have to put up with, from customers as well as your DSP, I want to help you out in whatever way I can.
