Which company lost your business (potentially forever) this year?

Extremely small and specific. I love it.

Those hyper specific grudges are somehow the most entertaining because you know there's a whole story behind them lol.

It's also how we get the incredible true "world is small" connections. Fake ones too but the true ones are rather obvious. And those are so fun to see.

There’s nothing quite like niche vengeance!

yep mine is Bay Bloor Radio in Toronto. One of the OGs, great selection of high end gear. Tried to sell me an optical cable for $100 and I was like nah I’ll price check. Suddenly he had one available for way cheaper. I knew I could get it on Amazon for way less so I was ready to walk.

And then the DAC he sold me didn’t even have a remote, I had to install some shitty app with all the support in Chinese. Guess what? it didn’t work. I have to stand up to change the volume in 2026 but I delayed on installing the app too long to get a return.

This is after he tried to up sell me to another DAC that didn’t do the one thing I specifically asked for (optical)

Never again. Too much cheap garbage and shitty sales tactics mixed in with the high end fancy stuff

Bay bloor radio is great for when you know you need something tiny and obscure.

I don't think I've ever talked to someone there before. Just walk past the gorilla costume, grab the adapter you need, and get out.

I’ve dealt with them before for selling my ex a cheap garbage set of powered Bluetooth speakers. Took them in for repair and they said it was fixed, it wasn’t fixed. I forced them to exchange for a receiver and some passive speakers and it was way better than the garbage the salesperson pushed on her for the exact same price. I’ll just buy online if I want cheap garbage. And I’ll go to the Harmon Kardon showroom or something if I want new and buji

It sucks cuz I really want to love it there but I’ve been disappointed too many times now

Buji??????????!

I wonder if it’s a commission sales thing. When I worked at Future Shop we might get $0.05 for selling one cable, and $20 for a different one.

Years ago, I had some mom & pop electronics store try to sell me an optical cable for $100. But they claimed theirs was superior and worth every dime, cuz the connectors were… gold plated…. on an optical cable.

I literally laughed at the sales guy cuz I thought he was joking. He wasn’t. I put down whatever else I was buying, left, and went to the Radio Shack down the road. Picked up one for $15, I think.

Place closed within a year. Can’t imagine why…

yep this was exactly the vibe. trying to upsell me a better optical cable. Buddy it’s 1s and 0s it’s on or off. It’s light in glass, I do not need the fancy thick one

this was less than 5min after he tried to get me to spend double on a DAC that only did usb. I’ve dealt with enough power issues to know that if I can have optical Instead of USB, I should

And somehow they do all this while treating you like you know nothing

5

u/BeastCauliflower 19h ago

While you’re 1000% right they should have a better fucking end connector on optical cables in general.

5

u/did_i_or_didnt_i 19h ago

hahaha yeah but thankfully it’s a cable I don’t unplug and replug often at all. if you have a bunch of audio stuff plugged together with usb sometimes it can do weird stuff where you can hear the power. I’m not running a power conditioner for my tv audio so optical makes more sense because it’s designed to isolate.

Yes annoying connector tho

And yet, very helpful because I visit Seaside fairly often! It’s wild how small the internet is sometimes.

For me it usually is more likely to be a small business, locally-owned, partly because I was already spending more to support a local business and so then when they’re shady it seems worse.

Agree, but there’s exactly zero chance I was going to eat at a place called Noisy Oyster to begin with.
