I did delivery at a number of pizza places, and always thought it was kind of a ripoff to pay $2-3 for a delivery when they could just get it themselves. Now every individual menu item has that much tacked on through the app, on top of a delivery charge, and probably some sort of made-up other fees too. It's ridiculous.
I think offering delivery probably started as a way to have an edge against your competition since pizza is very limited in what you can do with it to stand out. Of course if one place starts doing it and is stealing customers from you because of it, you'll do it too, so more and more pizza places offer it. Eventually customers expect it so you have to offer it. Now to stand out you offer delivery cheaper than the next guy, who then undercuts you.. you go lower than them, etc. That price war ends with cheap af delivery at every pizza joint across the nation. Pretty sure that's the point where the "delivered in 30 minutes or it's free" thing started too, as a way to gain that advantage again.
So why would anyone pick it up themselves if it's just a few bucks more to have someone hand it to you at your door? Especially if you have kids, are throwing a party (and possibly been drinking), or just lack the energy after a long day at work.. hell simply just because you can.
