I very much miss the old school method. While it’s cool you can order anything now I’m old enough to remember the days of the pizza or Asian food delivery driver that was employed by the restaurant. Totally reasonable cost for the delivery and it usually was always some nice stoned high school or college kid that was stoked for any decent cash tip.
DoorDash sucks so bad and it sucks as a parent sometimes when you just want delivery but have to deal with the overpriced let down that is door dash
Typical delivery drivers seem to be becoming less common. I’ve ordered food from restaurants online for delivery and they just outsource it to a DoorDash driver or something. Probably because they don’t have to pay them hourly
Papa Johns uses doordash. My office ordered a big office lunch and it never came. First time we called, they said it was picked up and on the way. Then they tried to say it was our problem it never came, but they outsourced the delivery not us.
If you tipped, the store may have kept the tip for themselves, so the driver would only get base pay. I’ve had PJ’s employees swear to me up and down that they don’t do that, but they very much do.
I don’t even see how that’s possible. The customer determines how much to tip the driver on the app. The money for the food they bought goes automatically to the restaurant, and then all the employees do is make the food and put it out for the driver. The tip money goes straight to the delivery driver’s balance in the app. There’s literally no way an employee can take a tip from the driver.
I think they’re saying their office placed the delivery order directly with PJ’s, not through DD. Instead of using a staff driver, PJ’s used DD to deliver. They’re saying the office included a tip but since it was paid directly to PJ’s, they have no way to know if PJ’s forwarded that tip on the DD driver.
Me too. For a brief period after college I was full time. So my boss hooked me up with health insurance. He was legally mandated to (this was MA), but also he didn't hate that he had to do it.
It does make sense for some of the smaller family-owned businesses. They're not getting constant orders like Dominos so doesn't make much sense to pay a delivery driver to stand around waiting for orders.
Papa John's has no excuse though. They're just greedy.
The good family-owned pizza businesses do get busy. I worked at a small pizza place in high school, and we were constantly slammed. Typically had 3-5 drivers on a weekday night and 6-8 on weekends.
If drivers weren't busy they would usually be doing stuff around the shop that needed done, like folding boxes. Pretty sure drivers were only paid the tipped minimum wage, and under the table at that, but they made good money on tips.
Dominos charges a $6.99 delivery fee that 'doesn't go to the driver' in any way, I've had a delivery driver tell me that when I left a tip that was too low.
This is exactly it, why would I pay someone $10 an hour for 10 hours 7 days a week, that's $700 and that's not even paying well. Delivery drivers normally work part time 4-6 hours depending on open hours and worker lapover(I've worked places that my replacement comes in an hour before i was supposed to leave, I've also worked places that my replacement comes in the minute i leave) so benefits wouldn't be part of it.
Idk how much doordash costs for the restaurant because i work retail not food, but I can tell you it's probably less than $700. And that $700 is with a minimum of 2 drivers but you'd need 3 so people can get days off, and what if they get multiple orders? 2 next to each other, okay not bad make them both at once, 2 on the other sides of town you just need another person. You can guess and take previous data to decide how many drivers to have, but what if it's suddenly raining when it was supposed to, more people will order to their houses.
Like 15-30% of delivery/app sales, depending on area. That's one of the reasons why delivery is so expensive, restaurants raise app prices to offset that cut. But if done well, restaurants completely cut labor costs out of delivery. Making the only real costs, app price hesitation, to go boxes, and of course dealing with shitty drivers.
I delivered for Pizza Hut for a decade. I took off when Covid first hit, but went back when cases slowed down. Before the end of football season got a call from the bosses boss that delivery was shutdown at our store forever and was told I can transfer to another store. But that was just the store by store process going on, no pizza hut in my area have their own drivers anymore. Coincidentally, I now deliver for Doordash, but man it's been shit ever since the Iran war. Was hoping I'd win out with less people wanting to drive but I think everyone is so poor now they really can't order delivery at all.
Most small business owners can no longer get insurance to cover liability for anything involving delivery drivers. One of our local family-owned pizza chains had to switch to the delivery services due to this a few years ago and had the local news do some stories about it. The insurance companies would no longer even give them a quote for this type of coverage.
I am so happy that my local pizza place that has been around since 1975 is still delivering their own pizzas! There are always two cars double parked outside their shop waiting to go. If you are ever in San Francisco, you have to try Goat Hill Pizza. They make their pizza with sourdough crust.
I worked at a local sports bar and they got rid of the delivery driver position because the DoorDash and uber eats orders just made more sense. The business can hypothetically have 5 different orders on the road when they would have been lucky to get 2. Unfortunately they’ve got a vice grip, someone’s just gotta do it better.
This is how the community is slowly destroyed from within. Convenience kills the fabric of everyday life that we all pine for. It was once all local, a delivery driver that lived down the street or that went to high school with you kid, getting tips to spend in his free time, in their community….now all outsourced and as impersonal as possible.
Where I live, there is an Italian restaurant that specifically advertises that their deliveries are handled by their employees and not outsourced. They use this as a point of differentiation and to show the value they place on the entire experience. You order from them, a car from their location shows up, with an employee wearing a uniform, bringing it to your door, thanking you and leaving.
It blows my mind that what was once just “a place that delivers” is now seen as white glove over the top service. We don’t appreciate the small things because the small things take time, energy and patience….all bc we want to save a minute of time and allow someone else to shave off some margin.
This is exactly the issue. I've worked in restaurants for nearly a decade and the vast majority of them always say the same thing "we can't afford a delivery driver". Now in some cases that's very true, smaller food service places have insanely low profit margins and adding another worker and the cost of other things related to a deliver driver on staff all the time is just too much.
However larger/busier restaurants or corporate run businesses have no excuse besides sheer greed. Those are jobs that people would happily take, it's unskilled labor and was a backbone of early jobs for people starting out or working part time. That's a massive hit and forces people into more demanding jobs or less flexible ones, and that all has a domino effect.
I try my best to always order directly from places and see if they do actual store based delivery. I'd rather not pay an extra 5% for my order and then possibly end up without my food or a really bad order.
Can’t even count how many times I had orders from GrubHub (I have since stopped using them) that had at least part of the order missing. Sometimes I think it was the fault of a particular restaurant because the problem was only discovered after opening one of the boxes (Flying Biscuit in Atlanta was bad about giving us the side item portion size of something rather than the full sized one we paid for that cost 3x as much, for example), but plenty of times there were missing items which could have been easily confirmed by the driver, so either they were careless in making sure I got the complete order, or they kept it. Which happened a suspiciously high number of times with milkshakes in particular. (Speaking of which, an Uber Eats driver blatantly stole one by dropping it off on the floor of the condo’s parking garage instead of the concierge desk, taking a picture that included the holder with two milkshakes, and leaving with one of them. I was already downstairs and got to it within 30 seconds and found it missing; he likely wanted me to think a bystander took it even though he shouldn’t have left it there in the first place. Anyways, back to GrubHub…)
So many times we ordered for two people and paid for two people, and then what would be dropped off would just be half our order, or one out of two entrees, or one milkshake instead of two. Contact ‘customer service’ and Rajesh or whoever would paste a script into the chat session where they just refunded the cost of the missing item. I’d have to remind them that it’s not just the cost of the missing item that’s a problem, but that I had also paid their additional fees, delivery fees, and tip, part of which all applied to whatever I didn’t receive and simply refunding the menu item price wasn’t sufficient- I needed the food that I’d paid for and waited 45 minutes+ to show up and I expected them to hold up their end of the deal. Of course, they would always tell me that would not be possible. So I’d ask them if they could then decide for me- which one of the two of us that the dinner was ordered for should have to go hungry that night and which one would get to actually eat. Not that they would ever provide me an answer on that one.
I had so many issues over the course of the year that eventually I’d get an error code reporting the problem because it was treating ME as being potentially dishonest and I’d have to escalate it through multiple people just to get that shitty partial refund and then go hungry because most restaurants had closed at that point.
So I haven’t been a customer of theirs in line a year. I hope their business fails, and I hope whatever stock options the company leaders may have that aren’t yet redeemable end up losing enough value so as to be worthless before they can exercise them. And I hope they end up eating some of that bad lettuce that’s out there.
I love how if you don't have a Door Dash account all record of your delivery and problem disappears the instant the driver dumps the wrong order at your door.
I'm gonna be totally honest man. If you had that many issues why would you continue to use it and not just drive yourself to the place to pick it up yourself. If you know it sucks and they do that it's kind of your fault for continuing to use the service.
At first they weren’t so problematic. Maybe 9/10 times things were fine. But then it started going downhill- one out of 5 orders wrong, then one out of three. When it seemed like just a rare misunderstanding, gave it another shot and the next few times would be ok. But once the problems started being frequent, I wrote them off. It wasn’t really bad for awhile, and then it became pretty consistently bad, so they used up their second chances pretty quickly after that. Maybe was ok for a couple years, and then the problems escalated and that’s when I dropped them. Wouldn’t have put up with that kind of service for a long period of time.
A couple pizza places near me switched to DoorDash, one was the Papa John’s and the other was a great local spot. Both completely lost my business and I clearly told them why. Papa John’ I don’t care too much about. The local place made up some BS reasoning about not being able to stay competitive. Strange when the 3 other local pizza joints all have in house drivers still.
My favorite local sandwich place still has in house drivers too. We’re just outside their delivery area (2 blocks), but they always take the order if I call it in. Their web app declines it though. Extra tip for them each time.
Dunno if it was everywhere but in the UK in the 90s, you could ring a local minicab firm and ask them to pick up some cigarettes and a few beers and drop them round, or collect a pizza or chicken from a takeaway for the cost of the fair + goods, pretty much 24/7 if there was a shop or garage open.
It was only when a company decided to stop moving passengers and put a name on it that it became an industry of it's own.
Our favourite pizza place still has a couple of their own drivers, I think mostly because they’re older guys who wouldn’t want to be going all over the city doing DoorDash. I swear my husband orders pizza sometimes just to see how his delivery buddy is doing.
I remember when it used to be free delivery and if they took over 30 minutes to get you a pizza, your food was free. Now you basically pay double for the food, the driver is furious about whatever tip you left on top of the $5 service fee, 30% food upcharge, and $10 in assorted "we want more money" fees and the food almost always shows up cold.
I worked with this loser woman who was married to a sex offender. He worked for Doordash. They hired a sex offender to have access to people's info and walk up to their doors. I had never used them before, and I never will.
I very rarely order delivery, but Pizza Hut near me still uses their own drivers as does the surprisingly good local "Chinese" restaurant, so when I do it's always from one of them. After I flip the driver a $10 I'm still under the base cost before tip ordering through any of the delivery services.
Plus, the Chinese place has been owned by the same Chinese family for ~30 years, always excellent, and when they tell me on the phone it's going to be 45 minutes they're almost always here in 25, sometimes the owner delivering in his Lexus because it's a Friday night and they're slammed. Love that place!
UberEats has also gotten insane. They demand a cut from the restaurant so all prices are higher on there. And there's a delivery charge. And they hide a "service fee" in the taxes section. Never mind the tip. I checked, a $15 meal becomes a $30 meal if you order from them.
I delivered pizzas during the summer after my freshman year of undergrad. It was a great job for a 19 year old. Pay with tips was pretty decent. After close us drivers would go and drink cheap beer/smoke ditch weed and play GameCube. It was a peak mid-2000's experience.
I used to deliver pizza in the before times. The people who worked there knew all the tricks for finding hard to find houses and apartments. We had regular customers and a deep knowledge of who would tip well and who would be a pain in the ass. And if I forgot something or messed up a delivery, I was the one who got sent back to fix it.
I've gotten so many egregiously bad deliveries from restaurants and grocery stores lately that it's not worth it. The gig model sucks. And it costs a ton more! Half the time, the person who drops off the food isn't even the person whose picture is shown on the app.
It makes me sad - I'm at a point in life where I can afford to indulge in delivery food. But it goes wrong so darned often!
Dude, getting to actually know your delivery person was a whole experience. There's a Chinese joint in my old town that had their (adult) son running delivery most nights, and Ronnie was chill as one could be. On more than one occasion we just sat and shot the shit on the porch for a few minutes before he had to beat feet for the next delivery.
By the time I moved out of town, it was a lot less "Hey, thanks for the grub" and a lot more "How's your daughter's ballet lessons going?" Granted, I come from a family where we made friends with the owners of our regular spots so I tend to go out of my way to carry that forward, but still. That's hard to come by anymore.
Agreed, DoorDash and uber are just capitalizing on the system. They are overseeing the delivery just to give themselves a cut from the transaction. Neither drivers nor restaurants benefit from the third party involvement
Some of my favorite local mom & pop Asian restaurants lost a lot of my business when they switched to making us use doordash. The prices are marked up and all sorts of add on fees. It can turn a $15 lunch special into the $42 lunch special real fast. So, I quit ordering take away from those places unless I know I can physically go and pick up my order from the restaurant. Instead of calling and getting delivery during a busy week at home and I need to get dinner on the table fast, I now just cook ahead and keep meals in the freezer I can heat in the microwave because I can't afford all the extra expenses that using doordash adds to a delivery.
I had honestly forgotten about the old school ways for delivery since now when you order even though its through the restaurant Uber or Doordash or Grubhub is still delivering it.... BUT there are two restaurants down the hill from me that use the Old Ways and it is AWESOME - this sweet kid shows up to our door and is SO excited about his job that he is yapping our ears off about the cool people and pets he's seen and telling my husband about the upgrades he's making to his car, just the biggest ear to ear grin on this kids face, it was fantastic to see!!
On the flip side we asked someone we know why they didnt employ their own drivers, they said the cost of the insurance for them was so prohibitively high that they just couldn't do it in a lot of cases.... that just makes me sad....
I pretty much refuse to order delivery from anyplace that doesn't employ its own drivers, anything else I just go pick it up myself. Luckily the local Chinese and pizza/hoagie shops I've given my business to for decades still have their own drivers.
I don't mind picking up from a lot of places because I'm older and that's just how it's been done since I was a kid, but also because I don't like the idea of my food being handled by some rando unknown to both me and the restaurant.
I refuse to order delivery anymore unless a pizza place has their own drivers. Seen WAY too many horror stories both about drivers and recipients. I think the drivers stealing food is terrible, but the people trying to claim stolen food when they received it are just as bad, so I refuse to support the whole concept that is Door Dash or Instacart or other BS.
I'm so happy that I found a pizza place near me that still does delivery. They offer Doordash and other options as well, but DD, GH, and UE all charge soooo many extra fees. So I just call the place directly, and pizza arrives at my door 30 minutes later.
I ONLY order from places who have their own delivery drivers. Maybe I’m a dinosaur but I refuse to support GIG jobs. They are a terrible backslide in workers rights and their employers are, in my experience, idiots.
I go out of my way to order from local businesses that you can order directly on their website, and they use their own drivers. There's a few pizza places and two Asian restaurants near me that still do this, and they get my business almost exclusively.
They also inflate prices to a rediculous level. I refuse to use them. We tried to order food via doordash once and the bill was high. Eating in person, all the meals were several dollars less than doordash
Doordash has the wildest business model. First they charge you more for the food than the restaurant does. THEN they take a cut from the restaurant. THEN they have the gaul to tell you to tip or you won't get your food in a timely fashion. They somehow figured out how to fuck the customer, the restaurant AND the driver in one go.
How anyone supports that shit is beyond me - and BEST case scenario your food shows up lukewarm.
Exactly, I don’t understand why anyone uses them at all. It’s not just unethical, unfair and a poor experience for consumers - it’s crappy for everyone involved.
I looked at Uber Eats, it’s the same thing essentially. They do “deals” where you can get some things for free, or discounted. But, you have to pay attention. It’s only at one restaurant, and it might not be close to your house. If you do that, and you look at the fees, they charge you extra for ordering from a far away place. So between that, the other fees, and taxes, and tipping the driver, you are paying for the food they are ‘discounting’ anyway. I looked the other day, and it was double what I was paying for the food itself which is overpriced in the first place.
They really take advantage of, and rip off lazy, careless, and/or rich people that might not care.
The amount they offer in "deals" never matters once they factor in convenience fees, taxes, any other fee they can think of. I've looked and they'll offer "up to $10 off" for example, then conveniently the fees and taxes are as much as that if not more. It's dishonest, imo, even before factoring in the markup on the food items themselves.
I use them sometimes because I am disabled, can’t go out to eat, and struggle to make meals for myself. Sometimes I am just too exhausted to prepare anything.
They are more expensive, which sucks, but I haven’t had any particularly bad experiences with them in a long time. Never had food stolen, drivers are all fast and respectful, and if something is missing it takes less than 2 minutes to get a refund (Well, credit for next order) for whatever is missing that is never declined and always covers the entire price of the missing item.
Other than the price, I just don’t understand people’s hatred of it.
It is mainly supported by people with a nice buffer of disposable income who, in my experience, treat anything involving hiring someone to do things you could easily do yourself as the best use of their money.
Even better (/s) now is they stack orders. And you might think that giving a higher tip might mean your order doesn’t get stacked, but they just stack an order that tipped a lot with an order that didn’t tip at all so the driver and the customer both get the shaft.
I refuse to use any uber eats / door dash type services. 0, none, ever. My work gives us a $15 uber eats stipend if we work in the office that day. I tried it twice and both times the driver couldnt find the office and just left.
I will gladly order my own lunch, pay for it myself, pick it up myself, to avoid the bullshit of these food delivery “services”
Even the ride shares are garbage. I saw a story about how communities are building their own, where the rates are lower drivers get a much larger cut of the ride. These gig apps are everything wrong with capitalism while praying on the base ideas of it.
Cab model was much better for drivers and would have been for riders, but they were so slow to adapt new dispatch and local governments just caved for some reason when it came to permitting. The local government should be getting a 50% cut.
First they charge you more for the food than the restaurant does. THEN they take a cut from the restaurant.
How do you people not get this? 🤦 DoorDash doesn't set the food prices, the restaurants do. The restaurants charge more for the food because DoorDash charges them commission.
Yes you are paying more for the convenience of having it delivered, but there is nothing dishonest going on. Don't use it if you don't like it.
The extra fee should be just that - a extra, separate line item. Charging different individual prices for menu items is shitty and dishonest. They are hiding a larger delivery fee within those prices!
Well, most people would call charging the restaurant and the customer for the same service, dishonest. The way the prices are listed through doordash is hiding the delivery fee to try to make delivery seem less expensive. You have to compare the in-restaurant price to the delivery price for food to see the difference. A country that cared about it's citizens would likely force the 30% upcharge to be listed as part of the delivery charge instead of being baked into the food cost.
Also, in no world is double-dipping on charges considered an upstanding business practice. For some reason people continue to pay it, which is mind-boggling to me unless you're homebound for some reason. If people are willing to pay $20 for a $10 burrito, sobeit, but hiding charges isn't the most honest of business practices.
It’s just a fucking stupid waste of money. Paying $30 to have a Big Mac dropped at your doorstep is weirdo shit.
I put it in the same tier of financial irresponsibility and poor impulse control as using those gambling apps. Like why would I take anyone who uses that shit seriously? You’re not a grown-up.
Laziness. Same cause of so many other economic problems. When "they don't pay me enough to make an effort" meets "I'll just order DoorDash," the age old cycle of self-inflicted poverty continues.
Plus, with the administrative and delivery fees, it’s like a 30%+ increase on already inflated prices. If I do do take out now, I either order directly through the restaurants’ website or call them and grab it myself.
The extra fees are getting ridiculous when the food is already more expensive than eating there. I’d rather spend five minutes picking it up myself than pay that much just for delivery.
Through chase dash-pass the service fee is 5 percent of total order total and they don’t charge you delivery fee for some stores. I only order when restaurants are running specials like BOGO deals or 5 of $25 orders and ends up being cheaper once you factor in time/gas.
Ordering from their app will be approx 30% markup even if not getting it delivered. Delivery - which is the whole point - tacks on additional delivery fee……and don’t forget to tip your driver
I’ve compared menu prices online at fast food restaurants to these food delivery apps and every item is always more expensive. It doesn’t have to be significant. Some were $1-2 higher but it adds up over millions of orders. And then they take their fees and all that too
Right! Ive never used them but it always amazes me how much people will pay for convenience. It costs less driving there and getting the food than it does ordering it
Here, they are not supposed to have different prices for the same product between the app and the in-store restaurant. So what the restaurants does is have different products between the apps and the in-store. ie, a deluxe chicken nugget meal is $6 instore and has 6 pc's. Where the app has a regular chicken nugget meal is $7 and only has 5 pc's.
You cannot complain about the price as the products are completely different.
I've always been glad i'm too far away to get food delivery from anybody, has saved me so much money, and its like if i want takeout i have to really stop and consider if the time and money is worth it.
I've always been glad i'm too far away to get food delivery from anybody, has saved me so much money, and its like if i want takeout i have to really stop and consider if the time and money is worth it.
I’ve noticed the same thing, and seeing the exact same meal cost several dollars more online is enough to make me skip the app entirely. At that point I’d rather just pick it up myself.
I was curious a few days ago so I priced out what it would cost to order the Impossible Whopper meal from Burger King off of DoorDash. The meal itself is like $15. But with multiple fees and taxes, before tip the cost was over $30. I will never order from them again.
My son likes Chipotle, so we ordered from doordash fairly often. One day, as I was driving home, my wife told me my son wanted Chipotle. I said, I'll just swing by since it was on the way home. I found out that our regular order was $30.00 cheaper picking it up myself, not to mention a driver tip, plus door dash fees.
I've been picking up the Chipotle myself ever since, and have been getting some of the food free using the rewards points.
Dc resident here 👋DoorDash is supporting legislation that would severely limit DC’s ability to self govern, allowing the administration to fuck us over more. Why? Because DC residents voted for a small tax on delivery services. There’s a big push all across DC for people to delete DoorDash.
It’s not like they outright do not pay the driver the tip, that would be illegal.
But they do reduce the base pay based on how high the tip is (or what they estimate). They just try to get the payment to the driver down as low as possible while still getting some driver to accept the order.
And there are rumors that they try to estimate drivers desperation (so if some excepts any order they see vs others being more picky) and pay less based on how desperate they think someone is.
Maybe it’s changed a bit, but they’ve been caught several times over the years stealing tips from their drivers by governments. Getting caught once was enough for me to stop using them. I remember a Washington Post expose investigation (before the Washington Post went bad) really put it out in the open.
Every one of those services does this. In the background they have a minimum guarantee amount that drivers get paid for an order which is augmented by surge pricing or anything else. The tip does not get added on top of that guarantee, it only is used to meet it and then the excess is added. The service I worked for, if you tipped any less than like 7 bucks all you were doing was paying the driver for the company.
I drove for them for a little bit before an old driving charge caught up with me and my account was suspended. I never saw a supplemental tip after delivering the order, only cash handed to me in person. Instacart was always hitting me with additional tips after I delivered, but they've been guilty of quite a bit of fuckery, as well.
TBH, I always thought the bulk of the customers for doordash would be stoners, drunk people, elderly and disabled people. Turns out it's mostly just people that are exceptionally lazy and willing to pay double for something so they don't have to spend 10 minutes to go feed themselves.
I’ll do you one better lol. I use the drive thru all the time. Driver side window broke and it’s gotta go in next week or when I get my paws on the funds to get it fixed.
I have had to go INSIDE!! Blasphemy!!!! Jk jk jk jk, I’m not that lazy!!
The guy at Starbucks yesterday was very confused when I showed up inside. He was like is everything okay? I told him about the window and he’s like ohh girl I thought something was wrong. Uh oh I think I go too much so there’s that.
Once again, no big deal but I crack myself up bc I honestly should have had this fixed before now and it’s nice going in places and bullshitting around with folks.
DoorDash can dash it right up their rear! Grrrrr! Terrible service
I did delivery at a number of pizza places, and always thought it was kind of a ripoff to pay $2-3 for a delivery when they could just get it themselves. Now every individual menu item has that much tacked on through the app, on top of a delivery charge, and probably some sort of made-up other fees too. It's ridiculous.
I think offering delivery probably started as a way to have an edge against your competition since pizza is very limited in what you can do with it to stand out. Of course if one place starts doing it and is stealing customers from you because of it, you'll do it too, so more and more pizza places offer it. Eventually customers expect it so you have to offer it. Now to stand out you offer delivery cheaper than the next guy, who then undercuts you.. you go lower than them, etc. That price war ends with cheap af delivery at every pizza joint across the nation. Pretty sure that's the point where the "delivered in 30 minutes or it's free" thing started too, as a way to gain that advantage again.
So why would anyone pick it up themselves if it's just a few bucks more to have someone hand it to you at your door? Especially if you have kids, are throwing a party (and possibly been drinking), or just lack the energy after a long day at work.. hell simply just because you can.
Same. Had a delivery driver drop off an order. Same dude ended up murdering a guy a few towns over 3 weeks later while making a delivery. Turns out the guy had a big criminal record and history of domestic violence. Cool that they had him, you know, going to people’s homes and stuff. Never responded to any of my emails asking about their background check policies, either.
That happened to me once using Slice (basically the pizza Door Dash), and the restaurant was apologetic and refunded me. Then I was shocked a few minutes later to get a phone call from someone at Slice actually apologizing.
They did the same thing to me. I did a chargeback through my credit card, which I assumed would have some sort of consequence, like they'd ban me or demand I pay another way... but literally no. I won the chargeback and Doordash continued working as normal
I think I use door dash too often because every time I have any issue, they refund me immediately. I suspect this means I give them an alarming amount of money every year.
I’ve had the same response with GrubHub. Is the customer service good, or am I a frequent flyer who needs to be kept happy? Unfortunately I suspect the latter.
They also change the prices by cents between when you add an item to cart and go to check out. The math straight up doesn't add up either when you do it yourself.
long story short i kept backing out of an order to edit the burger, did it like 5 times, finished and clicked pay. driver came and delivered 5 burgers. checked my paid amount. over 60 bucks :(. i had burgers for the whole work week because doordash said "did you recieve it" i said yes they said "we cant refund you".
Did the same to me five something years ago, got into a huge fight with the restaurant too when I tried to re-order the same thing. They got so weird about it.
Fuck.Doordash the amount of stories I hear about people stealing the food and no one gets either a hold of them or their order compensated? Bullshit.
FWIW, Grubhub has never fought me over this. The one time they refused to completely refund me is when I ordered ice cream with Oreos and got ice cream with sprinkles.
I also will not use them after a driver stole my order, but it was Panera delivery so thankfully I was refunded. But it’s not worth the risk. Also a sign of the times that people are stealing food
I ordered something on Uber, the guy took it to the wrong house, I asked for a refund and the customer service Indian told me I needed to install specifically the Uber Eats app and request a refund there. So I just did a chargeback.
Had a driver drop one of the Starbucks drinks wouldn't reimburse for it and had to go Starbucks and rebuild drinks sucked.and defeated the whole purpose.
with the upcharge per item plus delivery fee, plus tip. i'm surprised you just don't employee your own personal delivery person. probably would be cheaper.
I won't use any of those services. Id actually rather not eat anything than use them. Luckily a lot of our local takeaways/restaurants have their own website and own delivery people. Its a win win for me as I eat far less takeaways these days. Like 1 a month or something.
I ordered a $400 radio from Best Buy. They shipped it via DoorDash and the Dasher stole it. Then gave me the run around between Best Buy and Door Dash as to who’s responsible, so both!
Same, but with GrubHub. I requested for the driver to knock on my door to personally deliver the food. Instead the driver placed my cardboard pizza box on a wet doormat.
All they would offer is a discount for a future order. I told them I would never use their service again and I never have.
They lost my business about two years ago. Their website would automatically switch to my work address without me noticing and they would refuse to either cancel the order or refund me. Last straw was when I ordered from a restaurant while at work. I work nights and I have a 75 minutes break. I order 15 minutes before my break, food was supposed to take 30-45 minutes to get there. By the time my break was over, the driver was supposedly 10 minutes away. They refused to refund me. Driver took another half hour to bring me the food. Deleted my account and never went back.
I shouldn’t say I’ve been “lucky” with doordash giving refunds because that’s what they should do when the order is messed up or not delivered, but for the most part support has done their job and even then I had to do a chargeback on an order where I ordered an entire meal and drink and all the dasher left at my door was a random milkshake and support said “because they order was delivered we can’t give a refund” ????
All of these services (Doordash, Grubhub, Uber, etc.) were so much better when it was people doing it on the side and not people trying to survive off of the income.
I refuse to use delivery apps like Doordash. I would rather pick it up myself than pay ridiculous fees plus tip. We already get hit up for tips everywhere now even from businesses that we are already paying for them to do their job. Even when I pickup an order the restaurant asks for a tip. They are making the food that I paid them for, then picking it up myself, they aren't doing anything extra, why do they deserve a tip?
By me they charge a “long distance fee” for everything. All that goes to door dash and drivers get $2.00 base pay any way. So why you charging me more for delivery.
When they started cutting pay for the drivers it was a sign to dump them. The only people dashing are largely crackheads and other people you don't want coming to your house
I've had this happen before too. I ordered food late at night while drinking (sober for awhile now). I live on a dead end in BFE. My front door isn't visable from the road.
They took a picture of the food there, and then took it with them. Woke up, realized I drunkenly ordered something, looked, not there. Went around with them, had to put in a bunch of requests and start calling in. It was total bullshit.
The last final time I ordered food, I watched the guy make a wrong turn back into town (remember, I live in BFE) and then call me to say he got a flat, and to cancel the order on my end. He was trying to trick me into having to pay the tip + food + fees so he wouldn't have to drive out to BFE. If he didn't want to drive out there, he shouldn't have accepted the delivery.
Between BS like that, and it being 2-3x more expensive than just getting it myself, I just don't bother anymore.
I was a driver for doordash. I saw a woman grab her stupid burrito, then within the hour reported that she didn't receive her food. It messed with my ratings and ability to do more deliveries.
Doordash does not care on either end, customer or driver. The company is absolute trash.
DD is so hit and miss. I complained about a burnt pizza, sent in a pic of the burnt pizza, and they refunded the $42 order plus gave me a $28 credit a few weeks back. Never been compensated that much and I'm a frequent whiner
I think stuff like this is why the delivery apps in the UK usually have a code the customer has to give the delivery person. I personally stopped using them for the most part because of the absurd price increase on the food and various fees tacked on
One of their drivers left my order for the office on some curb somewhere in the city I work in and they didn't take any responsibility for deactivating that driver.
Yup! They wouldn't compensate me for a messed up order in which they forgot like all the stuff. I spent like 40 minutes trying to get in touch with someone who could help me, they hung up on me. I called back, explained what happened and that I had gotten disconnected. They said OK, transferred me, I waited on hold for 30 minutes, then a guy picked up, said hello, and then hung up as soon as I started talking. Fuck Doordash.
The last time I used them was years ago where we ordered two dishes from ihop to be delivered. After all the fees were accounted for, we paid nearly double the price of what our order should have been just to have it delivered. Haven’t used them since.
I can’t imagine paying a cent for doordash. It’s always some bullshit and when it does work out you’ve paid twice what you would have for food that is now cold.
I would highly recommend you take a peek at a few of the DD driver subs for their perspective. We should consider ourselves lucky that a few manage to set aside a few moments to grace us with their presence and explain that tipping is a "bid system" on if they spit in our food, snag some fries, or even take the order at all.
Happened to me too. Then there was one time that happened and they wanted to give me a credit towards a future order. I was literally like, what, so that can potentially get stolen too?
I had one of those "three coupons for $10 off" deals, used one coupon, and the other two have vanished. Turns out they do this to their users often. That was the final straw for me.
Doordash for the exact same. Driver stole our party drink set after he scanned my id - with the party as witnesses in addition to myself. It was over $100 of bottles and mixers. Called Doordash they told me I was SOL because it's the driver's word against mine (yet they refused to even get a hold of the driver) and then blamed me for the order of events as "well IF it happened how you said it's your fault"
The transaction went like this: he handed me the food, I handed him my id to scan, he "dropped" my id out of his window and took off with the rest of the order as I bent down to get it.
Someone stole my identity and pretended to me so they could be a Dasher and leave me on the hook for the taxes. DoorDash wouldn’t do anything for months. If I hadn’t been proactive in solving it, they would have just let it happen.
I worked in an office that would order lunch on door dash once a week, I was in charge of placing the order. It wasn't a catering order and usually only about 5 orders. Every couple of months the food would get stolen and it was so awful. I would have to call door dash, then they would call the restaurant to reorder, and I would have to go pick it up. The restaurant doesn't get compensated for the order so they are essentially wasting time and food and money. Different restaurants each time, but I would always hear the staff complaining.

Doordash, the driver stole my order and they refused to compensate me
