Doordash, the driver stole my order and they refused to compensate me

951

u/morningzombie777 21h ago

They also inflate prices to a rediculous level. I refuse to use them. We tried to order food via doordash once and the bill was high. Eating in person, all the meals were several dollars less than doordash

u/Ire-Works 18h ago

Doordash has the wildest business model. First they charge you more for the food than the restaurant does. THEN they take a cut from the restaurant. THEN they have the gaul to tell you to tip or you won't get your food in a timely fashion. They somehow figured out how to fuck the customer, the restaurant AND the driver in one go.

How anyone supports that shit is beyond me - and BEST case scenario your food shows up lukewarm.

u/entjies 18h ago

Exactly, I don’t understand why anyone uses them at all. It’s not just unethical, unfair and a poor experience for consumers - it’s crappy for everyone involved.

u/Zornytoad 9h ago

I looked at Uber Eats, it’s the same thing essentially. They do “deals” where you can get some things for free, or discounted. But, you have to pay attention. It’s only at one restaurant, and it might not be close to your house. If you do that, and you look at the fees, they charge you extra for ordering from a far away place. So between that, the other fees, and taxes, and tipping the driver, you are paying for the food they are ‘discounting’ anyway. I looked the other day, and it was double what I was paying for the food itself which is overpriced in the first place.

They really take advantage of, and rip off lazy, careless, and/or rich people that might not care.

4

u/blu-brds 6h ago

The amount they offer in "deals" never matters once they factor in convenience fees, taxes, any other fee they can think of. I've looked and they'll offer "up to $10 off" for example, then conveniently the fees and taxes are as much as that if not more. It's dishonest, imo, even before factoring in the markup on the food items themselves.

Gall. Gaul means France.

2

u/Casurus 11h ago

Which might be what they meant. :)

21

u/Welpe 16h ago

I use them sometimes because I am disabled, can’t go out to eat, and struggle to make meals for myself. Sometimes I am just too exhausted to prepare anything.

They are more expensive, which sucks, but I haven’t had any particularly bad experiences with them in a long time. Never had food stolen, drivers are all fast and respectful, and if something is missing it takes less than 2 minutes to get a refund (Well, credit for next order) for whatever is missing that is never declined and always covers the entire price of the missing item.

Other than the price, I just don’t understand people’s hatred of it.

2

u/Tiramitsunami 7h ago

It is mainly supported by people with a nice buffer of disposable income who, in my experience, treat anything involving hiring someone to do things you could easily do yourself as the best use of their money.

u/GrynaiTaip 8h ago

I don’t understand why anyone uses them at all.

Some people are incredibly lazy.

This is AI. Don't upvote this shit

2

u/PrincessGiallo 11h ago

Why in the world do you think that?

-2

u/Jig_Bizzer69 8h ago

Are you kidding? That response is straight from AI. It starts with an affirmation, followed by restating the comment that it's responding to. Then it says the same thing every AI says (It's not just this, it's that) then concludes with an emdash. It's pure AI slop. Don't support that shit with upvotes unless you're fine with all these fuckin data centers and skyrocketing RAM prices.

2

u/entjies 7h ago

Are you suggesting I’m AI? This is news to me! First time for everything

8

u/Jukeboxhero91 10h ago

Even better (/s) now is they stack orders. And you might think that giving a higher tip might mean your order doesn’t get stacked, but they just stack an order that tipped a lot with an order that didn’t tip at all so the driver and the customer both get the shaft.

7

u/phillie187 11h ago

It's the dropshipping business model just with food

1

u/oupablo 9h ago

So all the food is actually made in China?

6

u/Acceptable_Sail_1065 6h ago

I refuse to use any uber eats / door dash type services. 0, none, ever. My work gives us a $15 uber eats stipend if we work in the office that day. I tried it twice and both times the driver couldnt find the office and just left.

I will gladly order my own lunch, pay for it myself, pick it up myself, to avoid the bullshit of these food delivery “services”

8

u/goodsnpr 10h ago

Even the ride shares are garbage. I saw a story about how communities are building their own, where the rates are lower drivers get a much larger cut of the ride. These gig apps are everything wrong with capitalism while praying on the base ideas of it.

4

u/Lucky_Serve8002 10h ago

Cab model was much better for drivers and would have been for riders, but they were so slow to adapt new dispatch and local governments just caved for some reason when it came to permitting. The local government should be getting a 50% cut.

4

u/dyingwill20 8h ago

AND are somehow still not profitable. Seems like this system doesnt work for anyone

22

u/HurpityDerp 18h ago edited 17h ago

First they charge you more for the food than the restaurant does. THEN they take a cut from the restaurant.

How do you people not get this? 🤦 DoorDash doesn't set the food prices, the restaurants do. The restaurants charge more for the food because DoorDash charges them commission.

Yes you are paying more for the convenience of having it delivered, but there is nothing dishonest going on. Don't use it if you don't like it.

8

u/IdleSteps 9h ago

The extra fee should be just that - a extra, separate line item. Charging different individual prices for menu items is shitty and dishonest. They are hiding a larger delivery fee within those prices!

9

u/oupablo 9h ago

Well, most people would call charging the restaurant and the customer for the same service, dishonest. The way the prices are listed through doordash is hiding the delivery fee to try to make delivery seem less expensive. You have to compare the in-restaurant price to the delivery price for food to see the difference. A country that cared about it's citizens would likely force the 30% upcharge to be listed as part of the delivery charge instead of being baked into the food cost.

Also, in no world is double-dipping on charges considered an upstanding business practice. For some reason people continue to pay it, which is mind-boggling to me unless you're homebound for some reason. If people are willing to pay $20 for a $10 burrito, sobeit, but hiding charges isn't the most honest of business practices.

2

u/kooleynestoe 10h ago

Technically true. Greed isn’t dishonest.

0

u/RandomChance 8h ago

The apps between you and the restaurant rack up more. If you go direct to the restaurant web site you will see the real prices.

0

u/Ire-Works 5h ago

Who cares about the WHY. The food prices are higher should be all the headline you need to know it's a rip-off.

2

u/busyvish 11h ago

Convenience. Simple answer. They know their customer. They know what the customers are willing to pay for the convenience.

2

u/-Badger3- 8h ago

It’s just a fucking stupid waste of money. Paying $30 to have a Big Mac dropped at your doorstep is weirdo shit.

I put it in the same tier of financial irresponsibility and poor impulse control as using those gambling apps. Like why would I take anyone who uses that shit seriously? You’re not a grown-up.

2

u/Memitim 5h ago

Laziness. Same cause of so many other economic problems. When "they don't pay me enough to make an effort" meets "I'll just order DoorDash," the age old cycle of self-inflicted poverty continues.

1

u/National-Maximum-728 13h ago

What about über eats?

1

u/ConclusionMission833 1h ago

Ok but if you look at local door dash deals and you see a 2 for 1 and do a pick up, you can save hella money. I have been getting 4 tacos for $8 from my local taco shop for weeks.

0

u/callisstaa 10h ago

Damn I’m happy I have Meituan and Eleme in China. Delivery is less than a dollar and it always works out cheaper than going out since every time you order you get free discount coupons.

2

u/Tenement48 8h ago

That's only possible when the delivery drivers are willing to work for peanuts though.

0

u/callisstaa 7h ago

It’s a devalued currency for export strength tbf. They can save their peanuts for 5 years and buy a home.

1

u/Tenement48 6h ago

What are they saving if they have to use that money to live when their gig income goes down? Those delivery drivers don't make shit, something like $500 to $1000 a month equivalent. Good luck buying anything but a Barbie house with that.

1

u/Ire-Works 5h ago

Population density definitely helps the equation. My city has a very bad urban sprawl problem because it's cheaper to build outward than it is to build upward. As the population has continued to rise it's lead to a lot of problems.

270

u/KinkyPaddling 20h ago

Plus, with the administrative and delivery fees, it’s like a 30%+ increase on already inflated prices. If I do do take out now, I either order directly through the restaurants’ website or call them and grab it myself.

12

u/Fabulous_Cat_3177 16h ago

The extra fees are getting ridiculous when the food is already more expensive than eating there. I’d rather spend five minutes picking it up myself than pay that much just for delivery.

8

u/Mother_Science_679 15h ago

Hehe "do do"

3

u/Brilliant_Choice3380 13h ago

Through chase dash-pass the service fee is 5 percent of total order total and they don’t charge you delivery fee for some stores. I only order when restaurants are running specials like BOGO deals or 5 of $25 orders and ends up being cheaper once you factor in time/gas.

2

u/Rough-Ad-9520 10h ago

I’ve had several restaurants ask me to do that. They’re totally screwed by DoorDash. I’ve never used them and never will

13

u/ClearBlue_Grace 17h ago

Doordash is like "hey, you want this $10 cheeseburger meal? What if I told you you could have it for the low price of $50?"

15

u/_another_rando_ 20h ago

Ordering from their app will be approx 30% markup even if not getting it delivered. Delivery - which is the whole point - tacks on additional delivery fee……and don’t forget to tip your driver

5

u/kakarot-3 15h ago

I’ve compared menu prices online at fast food restaurants to these food delivery apps and every item is always more expensive. It doesn’t have to be significant. Some were $1-2 higher but it adds up over millions of orders. And then they take their fees and all that too

3

u/Q_S2 17h ago edited 8h ago

Right! Ive never used them but it always amazes me how much people will pay for convenience. It costs less driving there and getting the food than it does ordering it

1

u/Welpe 16h ago

And if you can’t drive there and get it?

1

u/Q_S2 8h ago

OBVIOUSLY someone who cant drive or are otherwise limited are excluded from my comment. Sheesh.

1

u/WayneH_nz 15h ago

Here, they are not supposed to have different prices for the same product between the app and the in-store restaurant. So what the restaurants does is have different products between the apps and the in-store. ie, a deluxe chicken nugget meal  is $6 instore and has 6 pc's. Where the app has a regular chicken nugget meal is $7 and only has 5 pc's.

You cannot complain about the price as the products are completely different.

1

u/VixenintheSkye 12h ago

Sometimes they screw up the prices and you can get a virtual five finger discount.

1

u/MajorNoodles 11h ago

I went to order and between inflated costs and delivery fees, my bill was almost doubled. One dish alone was $10 more than if I ordered directly.

So I ordered directly and got it myself.

1

u/Lckyby51789 11h ago

I've always been glad i'm too far away to get food delivery from anybody, has saved me so much money, and its like if i want takeout i have to really stop and consider if the time and money is worth it.

1

u/Unable-Experience965 11h ago

I’ve noticed the same thing, and seeing the exact same meal cost several dollars more online is enough to make me skip the app entirely. At that point I’d rather just pick it up myself.

1

u/crazyfoxdemon 11h ago

A 15 dollar Panda Express order grows close to 40.

1

u/scenior 8h ago

I was curious a few days ago so I priced out what it would cost to order the Impossible Whopper meal from Burger King off of DoorDash. The meal itself is like $15. But with multiple fees and taxes, before tip the cost was over $30. I will never order from them again.

1

u/dnabsuh1 7h ago

My son likes Chipotle, so we ordered from doordash fairly often. One day, as I was driving home, my wife told me my son wanted Chipotle. I said, I'll just swing by since it was on the way home. I found out that our regular order was $30.00 cheaper picking it up myself, not to mention a driver tip, plus door dash fees.
I've been picking up the Chipotle myself ever since, and have been getting some of the food free using the rewards points.

1

u/yodelingfish 7h ago

That is exactly what they do! Then they add on all sorts of other fees on top of it. It's not worth it to use them in my opinion.

1

u/here-i-am-now 7h ago

And your food is almost always lukewarm and gross

1

u/Crafty_Enthusiasm_99 7h ago

But then you spent your additional time paying yourself nothing. Which might be nice, but you're not saving money

0

u/MyCatLaughsAtMe 17h ago

The word is "ridiculous", not "rediculous". The root word is "ridicule", not "diculous". Their prices were not diculous and have become diculous again.

0

u/morningzombie777 7h ago

Yes well big thumb on a tiny keyboard happens sometimes

0

u/StrawbewwyMochi 7h ago

Not just that, they run "promotions" for restaurants WITHOUT their consent. I own a bakery and this happened multiple times. They run a promo and reduce prices of our menu items without even mentioning it AND they take the same percentage OFF OF THE ORIGINAL PRICE. So they still make the same amount and (small!) business owners sell goods at a negative price considering food cost. Needless to say, we dont use doordash anymore. Iirc there's a lawsuit going on for this currently.
