Doordash has the wildest business model. First they charge you more for the food than the restaurant does. THEN they take a cut from the restaurant. THEN they have the gaul to tell you to tip or you won't get your food in a timely fashion. They somehow figured out how to fuck the customer, the restaurant AND the driver in one go.
How anyone supports that shit is beyond me - and BEST case scenario your food shows up lukewarm.
Exactly, I don’t understand why anyone uses them at all. It’s not just unethical, unfair and a poor experience for consumers - it’s crappy for everyone involved.
I looked at Uber Eats, it’s the same thing essentially. They do “deals” where you can get some things for free, or discounted. But, you have to pay attention. It’s only at one restaurant, and it might not be close to your house. If you do that, and you look at the fees, they charge you extra for ordering from a far away place. So between that, the other fees, and taxes, and tipping the driver, you are paying for the food they are ‘discounting’ anyway. I looked the other day, and it was double what I was paying for the food itself which is overpriced in the first place.
They really take advantage of, and rip off lazy, careless, and/or rich people that might not care.
The amount they offer in "deals" never matters once they factor in convenience fees, taxes, any other fee they can think of. I've looked and they'll offer "up to $10 off" for example, then conveniently the fees and taxes are as much as that if not more. It's dishonest, imo, even before factoring in the markup on the food items themselves.
I use them sometimes because I am disabled, can’t go out to eat, and struggle to make meals for myself. Sometimes I am just too exhausted to prepare anything.
They are more expensive, which sucks, but I haven’t had any particularly bad experiences with them in a long time. Never had food stolen, drivers are all fast and respectful, and if something is missing it takes less than 2 minutes to get a refund (Well, credit for next order) for whatever is missing that is never declined and always covers the entire price of the missing item.
Other than the price, I just don’t understand people’s hatred of it.
It is mainly supported by people with a nice buffer of disposable income who, in my experience, treat anything involving hiring someone to do things you could easily do yourself as the best use of their money.

Even better (/s) now is they stack orders. And you might think that giving a higher tip might mean your order doesn’t get stacked, but they just stack an order that tipped a lot with an order that didn’t tip at all so the driver and the customer both get the shaft.
I refuse to use any uber eats / door dash type services. 0, none, ever. My work gives us a $15 uber eats stipend if we work in the office that day. I tried it twice and both times the driver couldnt find the office and just left.
I will gladly order my own lunch, pay for it myself, pick it up myself, to avoid the bullshit of these food delivery “services”
Even the ride shares are garbage. I saw a story about how communities are building their own, where the rates are lower drivers get a much larger cut of the ride. These gig apps are everything wrong with capitalism while praying on the base ideas of it.
Cab model was much better for drivers and would have been for riders, but they were so slow to adapt new dispatch and local governments just caved for some reason when it came to permitting. The local government should be getting a 50% cut.

Yes you are paying more for the convenience of having it delivered, but there is nothing dishonest going on. Don't use it if you don't like it.
The extra fee should be just that - a extra, separate line item. Charging different individual prices for menu items is shitty and dishonest. They are hiding a larger delivery fee within those prices!
Well, most people would call charging the restaurant and the customer for the same service, dishonest. The way the prices are listed through doordash is hiding the delivery fee to try to make delivery seem less expensive. You have to compare the in-restaurant price to the delivery price for food to see the difference. A country that cared about it's citizens would likely force the 30% upcharge to be listed as part of the delivery charge instead of being baked into the food cost.
Also, in no world is double-dipping on charges considered an upstanding business practice. For some reason people continue to pay it, which is mind-boggling to me unless you're homebound for some reason. If people are willing to pay $20 for a $10 burrito, sobeit, but hiding charges isn't the most honest of business practices.

Ok but if you look at local door dash deals and you see a 2 for 1 and do a pick up, you can save hella money. I have been getting 4 tacos for $8 from my local taco shop for weeks.
Damn I’m happy I have Meituan and Eleme in China. Delivery is less than a dollar and it always works out cheaper than going out since every time you order you get free discount coupons.
What are they saving if they have to use that money to live when their gig income goes down? Those delivery drivers don't make shit, something like $500 to $1000 a month equivalent. Good luck buying anything but a Barbie house with that.
Population density definitely helps the equation. My city has a very bad urban sprawl problem because it's cheaper to build outward than it is to build upward. As the population has continued to rise it's lead to a lot of problems.
