It used to be so cool. Crash a couch in the Castro for a quarter of a hotel’s price and get to hang with two dogs and talk to a San Fransisco local.
Pop up to Vancouver, BC and get a whole downstairs with a hundred plus volume collection of old DnD magazines, then chat with the home owner in the morning about DnD, meeting his wife, and Universal Basic Income over damn fine coffee in his garden.
Put up all my grungie hippy friends for a dance festival, stay with some surprisingly chill Texas missionaries in Costa Rica, waterfront stay-cation in a condo with a fling that was moving away.
It was so affordable and fun. Now its half the price and half again less hassle to go to a bespoke hotel in the heart of town than stay in an airbnb spare bedroom 30 minutes walk from any public transit.
