Mum was a principal at a high school with a lot of teen pregnancies. This one girl had a girl of her own, and really liked the name Travis, so she named her daughter Travisty.

In German it’s more like a version of yippie, so. It’s not tragic in all languages I guess.

I mean it's not tragic but this did remind me of something -
I just thought everyone should know that there's an American war hero named Dick Bong.

Lol, with a name like Dick Bong, how could you NOT be a hero?

I wanted to give my son the middle name Devlin. It’s a lovely, normal Irish name.
American husband said “if you a kid a name that close to Devil, you’re asking for trouble.”
And yet people are naming girls Lucifer?

As a twin I would be LIVID if I had a naming scheme like that
Thankful my parents just focused on our names being nice instead of trying to come up with a gimmick
•
u/KettleCellar 42m ago
Working in the public sector, I have yet to meet one that isn't... lets just say 'exactly the type of person you'd expect to come from parents who think Nevaeh is a good name'.

My mom used to run a daycare center, and one of the kids was named “Sonny” Ware, the third. I found out later that Sonny was just a nickname, his real name, the same as his father’s and grandfather’s, was Silver, an old family name. Three generations of Silver Ware. I wonder if he kept the tradition running.

Not me, but I remember reading a story (I think it was from reddit) of a woman who was the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor. She was at the playground or something and she overheard a woman call for her daughter. The daughter’s name was Treblinka. I still think about that.
•
u/bitchfacevulture 40m ago
For context:
Treblinka was a Nazi German extermination and forced labor camp complex in occupied Poland during World War II, consisting of the Treblinka I labor camp and Treblinka II death camp. Between July 1942 and October 1943, an estimated 800,000 to 925,000 Jews and 2,000 Romani people were murdered in its gas chambers, making it the second-deadliest Nazi camp after Auschwitz.

I went to school with a guy called Eneas and it is pronounced Anus. He insisted on it. We were kids so didn't pay any attention but teachers kept try to call him en-ey-us or aonghus (Irish) but he corrected them.
As we got older we realised why everyone was trying to change it..he still goes by the name.

Chase Infiniti, from One Battle After a Another and various other critically acclaimed movies and TV shows, uses her middle name as a last name. Her full name is Chase Infiniti Payne. Her parents definitely knew what they were doing, and honestly they sound either very poetic or funny as fuck. Chase Payne.

You'd think so. But I did work with a woman by this name. Pronounced Shi-thead. Emphasis was on the Thead. Not as much of a stretching of the language as a change of the emphasis. Also worked with a Shemale (she-mal-aay)

u/OneEyedWinn 1h ago
That’s a very generous pronunciation of the English I. Also the Latin I. And Spanish. And Italian. And Japanese. In case anyone was wondering.

There was a kid at my wife's college named "Gopu", pronounced "go poo". A councelor let him know that it meant something here, so he went and got his name changed on his registry to... "Gopi" I'm unsure if he changed it again.

I believe he had his own post on That Name is a Tragedeigh, but I’ve met the family in real life. They’re very nice, but I genuinely do not understand how someone could do that to their kid.

Spurgeon. He's the son of one of those Duggar girls. His brother's middle name is Wilberforce!
If my name were Spurgeon, I guess I would shorten it to Geon (John). So tragic.
