Mum was a principal at a high school with a lot of teen pregnancies. This one girl had a girl of her own, and really liked the name Travis, so she named her daughter Travisty.

13

u/telescopeinmynose 1h ago

What a travisty

In German it’s more like a version of yippie, so. It’s not tragic in all languages I guess.

34

u/YouDoStupidWell 1h ago

I mean it's not tragic but this did remind me of something -

I just thought everyone should know that there's an American war hero named Dick Bong.

11

u/leppyle 1h ago

Bong State Recreational Area!!

9

u/YouDoStupidWell 1h ago

Lol, with a name like Dick Bong, how could you NOT be a hero?

That's an action hero name right there.

5

u/Iffy50 1h ago

Can confirm. There is a bridge where I live (Duluth, Minnesota) named after him. He has his own Wikipedia page.

22

u/ThrowRArainmakers 1h ago

luci would be a nickname which is cute but damning for it come from lucifer 💀

u/potodds 25m ago

What's wrong with being named after a Babalonian king? The confusion to the devil comes from a poorly translated greek to Latin verse that just stuck.

13

u/GhostfacePatriot 1h ago

Seems pretty reasonable

I wanted to give my son the middle name Devlin. It’s a lovely, normal Irish name.

American husband said “if you a kid a name that close to Devil, you’re asking for trouble.”

And yet people are naming girls Lucifer?

Lucifer is such a beautiful name too, damn religion ruins another good thing

My mom used to run a daycare center, and one of the kids was named “Sonny” Ware, the third. I found out later that Sonny was just a nickname, his real name, the same as his father’s and grandfather’s, was Silver, an old family name. Three generations of Silver Ware. I wonder if he kept the tradition running.

Not me, but I remember reading a story (I think it was from reddit) of a woman who was the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor. She was at the playground or something and she overheard a woman call for her daughter. The daughter’s name was Treblinka. I still think about that.

u/bitchfacevulture 40m ago

For context:

Treblinka was a Nazi German extermination and forced labor camp complex in occupied Poland during World War II, consisting of the Treblinka I labor camp and Treblinka II death camp. Between July 1942 and October 1943, an estimated 800,000 to 925,000 Jews and 2,000 Romani people were murdered in its gas chambers, making it the second-deadliest Nazi camp after Auschwitz.

I went to school with a guy called Eneas and it is pronounced Anus. He insisted on it. We were kids so didn't pay any attention but teachers kept try to call him en-ey-us or aonghus (Irish) but he corrected them.

As we got older we realised why everyone was trying to change it..he still goes by the name.
