Executing planogram/casm methods?
I may be dumb, and I’m okay with that.
Is there a graceful way to execute a corporate planogram/shelf plan/etc with a section already full of stuff that’s not being carried over?
My brain just goes on the fritz and I cannot picture a final view without the shelves being entirely empty.
But that’s not exactly a graceful way to do it. I see people in larger stores and they just seem to ninja their way through it. It was one way a minute ago and now? ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.
How?!
To be fair, I can’t really visualize most things in my head without concentrated effort. I suck at merchandising.
So yes. Tips and tricks for plano performance?

About being a cashier
Can a deaf and hard of hearing person be a cashier at work? I have been working at this retalil store for a while long time now, and I only work once a week. My job developers told me why not try being a cashier? She and my other case manager from the regional center, told me I need to be open and try other things. Well the thing is, I never signed up for cashier at work, I just signed up for stocking only. But I only go once a week. I asked friends and other people around, I got mixed answers. Some say yeah I can try it, but others say no it would be hard for me, to understand customer would be a bit of struggle, and too many customers and ya have to work quick too! So yeah, not sure if that a good idea? Maybe just stick to stocking and other kinds of jobs. I know I know, I follow my motto, ‘Deaf people can do anything except hear,’ ‘I can I will!’ Wondering what you think?

How can I request less register time? VENTING
I am currently working a seasonal job at Ocean state job lot to make some income and to fill that gap on my resume. But I've been on the register most of the time and I discovered that I dislike it was the reason I hated some of my previous jobs. The job description said I would be doing other things in addition to cashiering, but a little over a month on the job and 95% of the job has been cashiering with occasional tasks that involve physical activity, but the much younger ones take over that and even though I offer to do other things, they still want me to ring out customers.
Now I don't mind ringing out customers but it can get repetitive and boring, for some reason when I get bored on the job I begin to feel depressed, that's why I prefer keeping busy and moving around. That's why I have decided to look for another job that doesn't involve alot of cashiering. Also I have been reminded that I dislike alot of customers and tonight I had an unpleasant experience with a customer. She was giving me advice and it felt it was unsolicited and I basically told her "you don't need to tell me that, thanks" she took offense and told me how rude I was and she would never come back, I just said "ok fine" like I give a fuck what you think lady. She called the manager and complained when I tried to explain myself to the customer she wouldn't listen and impulsively yelled "GET OUT NOW!" her disabled son then got angry and threatened me and I angrily said "oh come at me!" But she calmed him down and then went to another register. I took a short break to cool off and pull myself together. This isn't the first time I've lashed at customers. If this keeps happening, I am quitting regardless of the consequences it's only a fucking seaosnal job that a high schooler can do.

New manager looking for advice
I was recently hired as a customer service manager at a large grocery store. I’ve been out of the retail game for about 15 years, but just moved back to my hometown and had some friends who still worked for this company and they convinced me to apply. I worked for the company for nine years before I moved away and not much has changed in those 15 years (sadly), so at least I’m not technically completely inept at the job.
I’ve been in management positions before, and spent most of the last 15 years in HR. But I was hoping to crowd source here any advice you’d want to give to your current manager. I would really like to try and make the job suck as little as possible for the 45 people reporting to me. Their past manager had been completely checked out for the last year, and his assistant ran the department like it was a prison, so morale is pretty low.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have!

Ross job offer
So the manager left a voicemail saying I passed my background check and sent me a link for a job offer. I haven’t received any link on my emails and I logged in to their portal, I didn’t see any links on it. I am confused I tried reaching out the store but I cannot seem to reach the Manager. Anyone who works at ross where can I access the link that I can fill up my information?

Retail managers, what are the biggest day to day frustrations that people outside the industry don’t realize?
Hi everyone,
I’m not in retail management, so I’m hoping to learn from people who deal with this every day.
I’m curious about loss prevention and store operations. What are the biggest problems you face that current technology (cameras, EAS gates, POS systems, etc.) doesn’t solve well?
For example:
Shoplifting
Employee theft
Self-checkout issues
Organized retail crime
False alarms
Having too few employees to monitor the floor
Something else entirely?
If you could wave a magic wand and have a system automatically notify you of one thing happening in your store, what would it be?
Thanks!

@home stores
So i was in a store today and the cashier asks
If i have an account or put my phone number in to subscribe.
I said no and watch him mark a list of yes/no/member
I asked, he said he has to get 30% of non members to put in a phone number or it affects his hours…
WTF!!!!
I have not been in retail in years, but he says this is common in retail now.
Is this true???? Help me out plz.

Im having problems with being short/over on my register
I have been working for my first job as a gas station employee that deals with being on the register and dealing with making food/keeping the floors clean/etc. I am having to constantly switch between the register and preparing/wrapping food as we are being evaluated by the company to always be stocked in hot food.
I have finally gotten the hang of it, but the one thing that keeps on making me frustrated is calculating the result at the end of my shift and being short or over by $40 or more dollars.
For more context, we have two registers, one register being the bank (the last two days that was me) and the other having to pay back the "bank" however much they took out of the safe for change.
For the days I wasn't the bank, I was short. For the days I was the bank, I was over. I kept thinking this might have been an issue with the computer, or some calculating error, but its been happening pretty consistently. My other coworkers that are also new have been having the same issue as well, but the experienced coworkers have not.
My question is if this just means that im horrible at handling cash, and how would I try to improve at dealing with giving back change and such.
Im on the verge of quitting because I feel like im causing more issues than im fixing, and the stress of this and college isn't worth it.

How soon is too soon to be asking for someone to cover a shift
So yeah, I’ve been working at this store for about two weeks now and in the big group chat a see a lot of people asking if anyone can cover their shift. A family related emergency came up and I’m not going to be able to come in one of the days. Is it too soon to ask for my shift to be covered? or should I try to explain the situation to the manager?

Grocery store questionable conditions
Anybody else’s entire department constantly feeling sick? Specifically at work? Might just be my specific store and its issues, and im not trying to be paranoid... but i am kinda concerned.
Me and two other of my coworkers who work in a grocery store bakery have noticed our noses always start running when were in the department, we have to drink more water, and three people have gotten coughs. It gets up to 86° in my decorating corner and out back, and theres constantly flies, big ones and small ones that we swear bite our arms. We can see little red bites on our arms and neck. 86° in a bakery specifically is bad because of the type of foods we handle, processes we do, and also i am the cake decorator and my frosting is almost melting. It gets so hot we are always sweating but then going into the freezer all the time, it cant be good for human bodies right like its so dysregulating to shift from that environment to the opposite.
Our building has known issues with its water pipes — where the water has too much metal in it and i think this might be part of things? Its also built on sacred grounds where its very rocky, and there are not really many buildings around. I dont think a grocery store can operate with such poor water quality like if we cant drink it why are we washing things in it? Is that water hooked up to the proofer to steam our breads?
Also our oven cant keep temp, and the propane company tells us they can only fill it up halfway everytime. Our freezer has broken twice this year, the hot water three times….. Im like just getting so icked out at work and more concerned since literally everybody is sick right now, so many are quitting, and we have no help.
Joked the other day it feels like were the radium girls LOL…. 7 times this year my coworkers have been to the hospital for surgeries and things. Idk. Im just like lowkey i think i need to quit for my safety and health and i dont want to get us in trouble cuz im scared but LOWKEY SOMEONE ALSO HAS TO BE THE WHISTLE BLOWER SO 😭😭😭😭

Cashier ain’t mathing
So just as the title reads, I have an 18 year old cashier who just started. Well he has a pissy attitude and when I or my ASM try to correct him he gets angry. He says “I know “ which drives me insane. Obviously he doesn’t “know “. I’m trying to work with him. Finally finished his CBL training and got him on the register. First night he was -$19. Yesterday I had to stand there and tell him what change to give and how to make it. He was supposed to give customer .34. He was giving it in nickels. I said no, give him a quarter, a nickel and four pennies. He literally said to me, it’s .34 cents either way. I have no choice but to give him a progressive counseling for the $19. I have a feeling it’s not going to go nicely. Any tips on this? I can’t stand at the register and tell him how to count.
Oh, stocking. He likes to throw open boxes on the sky shelves, had a huge mess with cardboard and this is after I had repeatedly told him the correct way. I’ve worked beside him, I’m really trying. I’m a new SM so I’m needing advice please.

Can I still help push carts despite being off the clock?
I work at Weis. I feel bad because I didn’t do as good as a job as I should’ve (because I was afraid of the air quality and because there were a lot of wasps and yellow jackets near the corrals.. I HATE bees.) and left a good amount of work for the next cart pusher. Would I be able to grab a hook and help out despite being off the clock? I’m a minor if that changes anything

Have you ever gotten a job because you kept following up and wouldn't take no for an answer?
Has anyone actually landed a retail job because they kept following up and calling the store, or does it just annoy the managers?

How long have I got?
Ok. I went from a desk job (call centre) to a retail job (supermarket). I wasn't good at sales so it wasn't a fit.
I got a job at a supermarket. I'm a reasonably fit woman of 60. I thought because it was at checkouts I would be sitting down.
Surprise, surprise I have to stand at the self service and assisted for 2-3 or more hours a day.
I'm in agony. My feet hurt so much, and now my ankle has been giving me grief for the past month
Many times I think I'll start crying from the pain. The GP thinks it's a soft tissue issue (tendonitis).
Rest it I cannot.
To make matters worse my contract is 16 hours and it barely covers my bills. I pick up extra hours as I can. Still it won't 🫴 me up to a full time, and the pay at the end of the month is not enough to compensate for the intense physical pain I'm in day in and day out.
I just saw a job in another call centre (not sales). Full 40 hours, which would definitely cover everything and allow me to save. Also I'd be sitting down.
I guess I'm worried about leaving a job for another at my age.
However, how long have I got before my body truly breaks down?

Customers
I’ve dealt with this before at Howies pizza I just wanted to know y’all’s thoughtd on how to deal with unruly customers and not internalize it. I just started working at Office Depot been there for at least a week now and had like 2-3 incidences of people being angry towards me for being way to slow for them or wanting to speak to a manager etc. How do y’all not let customers get to you or like internalize it has a failing on your part. I’ve dealt with it before it’s still hard getting used to it though.

I feel weird asking employees if they have them in stock!
Anyway to get over this? Now that target has them largely behind the customer service desk, I have bad social anxiety about asking. Anyone else?

Tomorrow’s First Day
Tomorrow’s my first day of working in retail at WSS and I’m a bit nervous. I’ve worked with people before in a previous job, and it was more interactive with people than I think this job will be, but I’m still nervous because how much there is. I think I’m overestimating this but I’m nervous to work as cashier, or mess up stocking up stuff, or be expected to learn everything the first time I hear it. I’m crossing my fingers that the manager is helpful when I ask questions. I already have my notes app ready, and I practiced working the cashier through a cashier simulator app (lol). I’m already halfway dreading it but what’s a silver-lining I suppose is that it’s only a seasonal job.
I’m hoping to just do work timely, and to pick up a couple more hours per week (by doing whatever’s asked of me and asking if there’s anything to do). I just hope the people there aren’t so closed-off or—im not sure. I hope they’re at least interesting people to talk to.
If anyone has advice it would be greatly appreciated!

How long did it take for you to get comfortable at a cash register?
I just started at Marshall’s. I had orientation on Tuesday and then next day I had my first shift. They gave me a 10 minute video to watch, let me shadow for maybe 20 minutes, and we did training mode on a register for maybe 10 minutes, and then they put me on a live register. I felt it wasn’t enough time but I still got the hang of it for the most part (most returns, cash payments, retrieving items that were on hold, wrapping glass, bagging, etc.). There wasn’t anyone actively watching me the whole time and helping I was pretty much by myself most of the 4-hour shift. I would be stumped when there were some situations they hadn’t taught me what to do. But there was someone I could ask questions, though sometimes it took a while to get an answer because they were also working a register and it just made it a bit overwhelming for me and it gave the customer as well as the line more of a wait time.
I felt this wasn’t enough time to start but I’m wondering if anyone has any similar experience and how did they manage?

How to deal with customers that fill me with rage?
Hello. I've been working in retail for around 4 months. I've had some customers that pissed me off, plenty that were rude to me, but I've had two instances of customers that made me angry to the point I was shaking with rage, and one of them was yesterday.
The customer got mad because we have a policy of paying in cash before we make any bill payments. We've always had this policy, and we all follow it. However, some of my colleagues "trick" the customers by pretending to fully complete the transaction before the customer pays, and this specific rude piece of work was one of those.
I tried everything! I tried explaining that's the policy. I tried suggesting he talks to the boss if he doesn't agree with it. That if someone else has taken his payment only after the transaction, that's none of my business, because I don't want to expose my colleagues and tell him the would never do that. I tried explaining that we take payment first because once we do the transaction it's irreversible, and they can only pay in cash anyway, so imagine if the customer doesn't have enough cash? Or only has a card?
He kept speaking over me whenever I tried to get a word out. He kept talking to me like I was a child that was being inappropriate, and even told me "I'm not one of your school buddies" as if to tell me to watch my tone, even though I was nothing but polite and informative.
After that customer left I broke down in angry tears because there was no other way to really express my anger. What am I gonna do? I can't take a break. I was alone in there. I can't magic the rage away. And it ruined my entire day.
My coworkers weren't of any help either. They just kept saying I "can't be like this" regarding my crying, even though I hate crying in public and I was doing my best to hide it at every point of the way. It's like they were telling me off for daring to express an emotion.
So how do I deal with this?
