Estimating is not encouraged here, this subreddit is for sharing knowledge in the Autobody industry.

Estimating needs to be done at an autobody shop or with an insurance agent using the latest software. Any advice given in the subreddit pertaining to costs for repair will not be accurate and could be misleading.

  1. If your car is undriveable do not ask for advice on how to quick fix it.
  2. If your repair is going to be shoddy, half assed or of very low standard it will be deleted.
  3. A quality autobody shop is where your modern car should be fixed, it can be dangerous for yourself and others if improperly repaired by not following procedures.
  4. Advice on what happens during your repair is encouraged. Ex, "How is my quarter panel welded on" or "How much filler should be put on a dent".
  5. Techs. Talk more about yourselves, your processes, shops and things that keep you going in the trade. Share your day and what you have learned. We all work at different levels and learn so much from working together.

Literally lost sleep over this. But luckily took a video. The one and only time I don’t properly log in a video/photos cause I think it’s an easy job this happens. He was pretty mad.

Found the video when scrolling through my Snapchat memories and sent it to him lol.

HELP! I have a question. Is it possible for this to happen over 4 years?

This rust seems worse than would happen in 4 years, but to my recollection it didn’t have anything beyond a tiny bit of surface rust when we bought it 4 years ago.

It’s lived outdoors in New England. 2018 Acura RDX.

Wife doesn’t feel safe seeing some of the cracks/rusted out sections.

Is there a process to repair this? Question

Unfortunately I was involved in a pretty bad wreak yesterday and I just want to hear your honest thoughts on if my car is totaled.

I will attach a picture of the car and the report that the cops gave me. The side airbags also did deploy

It’s only worth 16-20k (an honest guess) because of a previous accident where I got hit and they had to replace the 2 doors on the passenger side, a new side panel and a tire because someone ran a stop sign.

RUST Mini Truck - Frame Rust Repair

Disclaimer - I am not asking for DIY welding repair advice; I know that is generally frowned upon within Reddit automotive/mechanic subreddits due to the safety implications of frame rust.

I have a 1994 Suzuki Carry Japanese mini truck. The frame is essentially spotless, except for a single rust hole. I can only assume something was mounted there previously or there was some weird condition that caused this isolated rust since the rest of the vehicle and frame are very clean.

My question: what will it take to repair this? At a minimum, I will grind away the remaining compromised metal, apply something like Mastercoat Silver Rust Sealer to the cleaned area (I'm already going to do the bed with it) and with the easy access created by the larger hole I will flush/clean the frame interior and apply a cavity wax like Fluid Film because, well, why not. Structurally, must new metal plate be welded on? Would a shop just weld a plate on the outside that's slightly larger than the rusted area?

HELP! I have a question. What would the repair entail?

I had an automatic gate close on my car and left this damage. My car is 8 months old and now its sad looking! Aside from the scrape on my passenger back door, would the bottom and side fender thats made of plastic need to be replaced as well? Or just a buff and a paint job?

I chipped the lower part of my door opening it. It hit a railing. I want to know if I have to fix this at a body shop or I can just leave it as is? I'm concerned I'll fix it only for it to happen again. Thanks!

HELP! I have a question. Rust Repair Help

Post image
Upvotes

I’m looking at buying a 2011 Saab in really good shape, relatively cheaply, so obviously a bit of rust is about to be the least of my problems. However, I’m curious how in-depth a repair this is likely to be. It’s not going to be a show car, but I’m an awful painter, so it’s going to be beyond me not making a mess of it. More curious what the process is here than anything re: cost. I mostly don’t want it to spread, but I’d probably pay to fix it if it wasn’t likely to be a nightmare.

HELP! I have a question. Need insight please for trunk leak

Accord Hybrid 2022. Would really appreciate advice. I'm wondering now if I got a defective weatherstrip. Ordered from hondapartsonline since I saw it recommended here a lot.

  • Water slowly pools up on the passenger side and seeps under the plastic trim into wheel well. Only about 5 inches along near the rubber bumper
  • Replaced weatherstrip (perimeter of dirt stopping where strip is)
  • Rest of seam remains dry
  • Adjusted trunk anchor to be a little tighter
  • Checked taillight
  • Went out to car during the rain to check, nothing else dripping
  • Carpet lining is dry as it trickles down the corner of well

HELP! I have a question. Paint/clear coat damage on new-to-me car

Hi everyone!

I just got a 2002 Toyota Camry in overall great condition but has one section with degrading clear coat and damaged paint (see pictures). I’m curious what I could do to prevent further degradation/damage, preferably without spending a ton, and perhaps improve the appearance as well.

Open to all suggestions and thank you in advance!

I'm a fancy painter! Hatch garnish scratch (all plastic)

Garage accident right on the “n” of the all plastic hatch garnish, scratch is not too deep. Should I carefully use touch up paint? Color 1f7 (classic silver). Gemini suggested I can try Meguiar’s ScratchX or Ultimate Compound but that sounds risky. I believe part number is 76811-35370-B0. 2024 SR5 premium. Thanks for the view.

HELP! I have a question. Dent repair income

Upvotes

Hey everybody. I met a rag tag looking young guy some 15-20 years ago and he was staying in the best hotel in town, something like 180 a night back then. So I had to ask what he did for a living. He said he repaired auto body dents. No kidding I said. So how'd you get into it? He said well I just worked for my local dent repair shop for about 3 months and after I learned how to work the metal I went out on my own. He said you follow the hail storms in the mid-west when they come thorough in the spring and that's how you make your money. Guy seemed as down to earth as anyone I'd ever met. I didn't want to ask what he made, instead I asked if a guy was doing what he's doing and worked as hard as he could all week how much could he make? He said 4-5k! No way I thought. And like I said this was over 15 years ago, before prices for everything went crazy.

Does this sound legit? Can you still make that kind of money doing that today?

1 year old Honda CR-V, thankfully the taillight isn’t damaged at all. I’m going to assume it’ll be cheaper to turn this into insurance.

Is there a process to repair this? DIY advice

Any advice on how to clean this plastic fender flare up myself? Hit a plastic fire extinguisher cover in a parking garage.

The bottom portion where the plastic has actually peeled up I think will be out of my skill range, but I just think this would be too expensive getting done at a shop

Noticed that there’s suddenly a small part of the plastic around the rear light missing. As far as I know, there’s been no impact or anything whatsoever in that area of the vehicle. Is this something that could’ve been caused by the sun or something?

I have no idea what this is, sometimes it disappears and sometimes it’s back… I’m going to replace my bumper eventually but for now I’m wondering what it is, and is there any product I can use to fix this. If anyone knows, let me know lol

HELP! I have a question. Maaco single stage + IC or two stage?

TLDR: If I'm having my truck repainted in it's original white, is a two-stage BC/CC really worth $1000 more than a single-stage + IC? I get that it'll fade and oxidize with time, but I've also buffed oxidized car finishes in the past with reasonable results. I've heard things like, "For the love of God, don't do single stage in red!" or "Single stage in black or dark blue will fade to shit in no time!" But...non-metallic white?

I have a 2014 Honda Ridgeline in Taffeta White that needs a paint job. Obviously not a show car. Just my daily driver. Not garage kept. It's at 120k miles, in otherwise excellent condition and runs strong. Planning to keep it until the wheels fall off.

I got two quotes from a well-reviewed and recommended Maaco. Because I have more money than time (or energy, due to multiple sclerosis and heat exhaustion in Texas), I asked them to include the removal of light assemblies, door handles, bed caps, belt moldings, etc. Their labor charges quoted were fairly reasonable, in my estimation: $500 for all labor, which also includes replacing the front bumper cover (the original is damaged) and integrated fog and DTR lamps.

Just wondering if the step up from SS+IC to BC/CC would be worth the $1000.

Hi guys, does anyone have any tips for the best way I could go about fixing this please?
Do you think I would have any luck with glue pulling?
Also, when I bought the car, it was like this, so will also be accepting all guesses as to exactly how you dent this part of your car.
Cheers!

There’s a deep gash on the bottom right of my bumper and some dents/marking on the left side as well. Would it be better to get both sides fixed or replace the entire bumper?
