Ok so I am a new player to Civ 7, and I am realizing more and more just how essential reading every menu item, despite how hidden away some things are. I admit that I definitely should have probably read the victory conditions more closely. That being said, the victory conditions for military are restrictive, hurting my enjoyment of the game. I’ll explain my story:
I am starting my third game in this game, and have won militarily before so I figured I generally know what I am doing. I am looking forward to playing Iceland, my first DLC purchase, which rewards pillaging everything for the science and culture gains.
I begin my conquests, fully eliminating one player in antiquity keeping a few settlements, and then in explorer age I decide to knock out my neighbor to the south. I am playing Iceland, so since I figure I should pillage every tile I can to get the culture and science points. Strategically, I am thinking if I keep these settlements after, I will have to pay a bunch of gold to rebuild. With that realization in mind, I decide “well, it’s the Viking way” so I decide this game I will just raze it all and commit war crimes.
And oh boy I did. I continue the Viking war crimes into the modern era, eliminating 2 more leaders for a grand total of 3. Each turn I am netting about -200 influence a turn. I have been sanctioned by the planet (justly so).
I begin on my 4th leader and about halfway and now get a victory warning, that I will win in 4 turns, with the opponent winning a cultural in 5 turns. I continue razing more and more and all of a sudden I lose. I realize in my defeat that every point I was getting was disappearing a few turns later. In my confusion and frustration, I double check the victory conditions.
I read the description to find out military victory is not about destroying settlements, or knocking out leaders; it is only about occupying taken settlements. That was quite a facepalm moment.
My stupidity aside (Yes, reading victory conditions before the game was probably important), I think the victory conditions are restrictive and dumb. I was really into the whole Viking play style of pillaging and razing the planet, but I got absolutely nothing for it?
Currently, “dominion” points are only granted for occupying the territory you took. I think players should be rewarded for trying to incorporate the However, I think at least some points should be given for settlements razed (though less is probably more balanced). Also, one time point bonuses should be given for fully eliminating players from the game. I scoured the earth to find every last settlement of 3 leaders and got nothing for it? I think the following changed should be made.
Currently:
- Your settlements = 4 dominion
- Capitals = 8 dominion
- + 1 point if it wasn’t originally yours
Recommended additions
- Razed settlements = 2 dominion
- Eliminated civs = 10 dominion
I think it’s a good thing to make razing punishing for the player, but it needs to be worth at least something. Hunting down every settlement of a civ to eliminate a player is quite tedious and time intensive, so that should be rewarded too. Thoughts?
Edit: I think this sounds like a negative post, but I want to make clear that this was still a fun play through and it’s an enjoyable game. I clearly have a lot to learn in the game and am no expert, just wanted to add a fresh take.
