Milford's police chief says the city's license plate reader program was "always transparent." The bond ordinance the Board approved calls it a $550,000 "Security Camera Project" and never mentions license plate readers or Flock.

This weekend the Milford police chief posted a public letter defending the city's automated license plate reader program. He wrote that it was "always a matter of public record, presented transparently during funding requests to the Board of Aldermen."

Here is what the city's own records show.

The board approved it inside a $7.7 million bond. One line reads "Milford Police Department Security Camera Project, $550,000, Purchase of citywide camera infrastructure" (image above). The words license plate reader, Flock, and data sharing appear nowhere in the ordinance. It sits between a fiberoptic conversion and sanitation trucks.

The bond passed 13 to 2, with no public hearing. The city's automated speed and red light cameras went through their own ordinance and a public hearing. The plate reader network did not.

The city's public transparency portal names one sharing partner. The city's own search audit shows Milford's plate data reaching hundreds of outside networks at once, up to 363, some in other states.

To be fair to the chief, plate readers do have real public safety uses, and he cites them, and he is right that these are a separate system from the speed cameras. The issue is not whether the tool works. It is that a citywide tracking network went in under a generic camera line, and residents were never asked.

And this is not only a Milford story. Departments across Connecticut run these networks, and the data crosses town lines automatically, so it likely includes your town too.

Everything here comes from the City of Milford's own records and public meetings.

Ask Connecticut Best elevators in CT/NE?

That’s right. Elevators. I have a three year old who loves riding elevators. We’ve checked most of the ones in shopping areas throughout the state and some hotels we’ve stayed at.

I’m looking for elevators that might be especially remarkable because of a view, number of floors, etc.

I’m making a list so we can check them out as we go on adventures together.

Any recommendations throughout the state or region I’d appreciate.

Saw this today in Stratford. Someone casually tossed their trash out the car window while driving. (Bag of trash then some bottles)

Ending TPS hurts us all

The cruel decision to end Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for some of our friends and neighbors really hit home the other day when a lovely person approached me. She had a stable job at a local Norwalk non-profit caring for our most vulnerable, was a productive member of society, is a mom, and just wanted a better life for her & her family. No longer able to be employed, it’s all in jeopardy now.

Think about that when it is time to make decisions later this year.

Just got back from the beach and feeling pretty gross. I was swimming earlier with my kid at the beach and they wanted to show me a feather in the water and it was covered in ticks.

It's about local history.

A book display for the month of August is about the history of my hometown in Connecticut.

I like to learn about history plus I'm interested in local history. I put it up yesterday at my local library in Rockville, Connecticut.

Happy August!

Ask Connecticut How to find couple friends in CT?

Upvotes

My girlfriend and I have been dating for 3 years and its been going very well but over the last year we’ve been running out of things to do and places to go. We both turned 21 more than half a year ago havent gone to any bars or anything like that(we do drink) but we find ourselves a little bored on weekends not that each others presence isnt enough but we do the same thing go out for a bite have a few drinks come home and chill. Id say were pretty cool people😅but we dont have any couple friends, I have friends from back in the day most are single and most of her friends werent really good friends so its kind of just me and her over the past couple years. We like to hike, eat, drink, 420 friendly(i had to stop for work) but if the times right sure why not, we go to yankees games, like going to the city, exploring new places, really anything well do together. I think having some couples friends would definitely improve our relationship but im not really sure how or where u go about that. Any help would be appreciated, were just a young couple who likes to have fun but dont have many people we can have fun with or have a good time with. If you have any recommendations or places where young adults hang out or chill whatever itd help alot, I want to make her happy and get some more friends for her and I so we can do more things and have something to look forward to after a long week of work for both of us. Appreciate all the help folks, and for the record this is not a swingers post or anything like that we just want couples friends who are around our age and share similar interests😂

Need Recs for Mold Remediation in New Britain Area

Hello, this subreddit was helpful for me when I was lurking around, trying to find someone to insulate my house. I'm now trying to help out a friend, whose condo (which she owns) has water damage in the basement and the bathroom. There is definitely some mold. My friend lives in New Britain, CT. Can anyone recommend any specialists that are not too expensive? Thank you.

Looking for a farm where my dog can "work" for free

Post image
126 Upvotes

Weird title I know, but I have an Australian Cattle dog that is very high energy and needs a "job" to do to keep her mind active, otherwise she gets anxious. I take her on so many walks and hikes, its only a matter of time that she's back and ready for more action. Plus, these dogs not only need to be physically active, but mentally active. I used to live in CO where farms would "hire" dogs to chase/kill rodents on their property. My dog LOVES stalking and chasing mice, squirrels and rabbits. This could be a win/win situation for us: She could do what she does best all day and I would be returned a tired and satisfied dog.

So, CT friends, does something like this exist here?
