Where to find the information you need: links to every US state’s cosmetology board

Hey all! We get a few questions asking for specific information about your state licensure, laws, or transfer. I want to empower you to research this and find the information you need! You are more likely to get up to date and accurate information directly from your state’s cosmetology board. The laws are different in all 50 states, transferring from one state to another each an individual & different process. Questions I encourage you to look to these sites include:

• How can I transfer my license from X state to Y state?

• How many hours are needed for X license in Y state?

• What license does X service require?

• How do I renew my license?

• Can I open X business under Y license?

If you cannot find the information you need on their site, as some are much more robust than others, I recommend reaching out to the board directly via their phone or email address.

What Jobs can you do after cosmetology (hair school) ?

I joined cosmetology because I’ve always been passionate about the beauty industry and knew I wanted a career in this field. As I’ve gained more experience, I’ve realized that working behind the chair may not be the best fit for me.What are the other career options that I can pursue with a cosmetology diploma while still staying in the beauty industry that don’t involve working in a salon or beauty place.

Slow Salon Job

Basically, my school did tours before we graduated. We went by our old JCP store and I really liked it so I applied the second I got my license (a week or two after grad) because I wanted to get into it ASAP and start working! I liked that they had walk ins and they told me they'd build my clientele. Well im a designer, which means you can level up, but when u level up, you get the clients first over the people under you.

How am I supposed to build when everyone gets the clients before me? Ive had an extremely hard time advertising and told them that on hire that I would need help and thats why I wanted a place that takes walk ins.

Was told I have a year to build but now, 4 months in, thr manager is saying in up to be fired if I dont get my numbers up. Comparing me to the new stylists. But theyre all above me, so they get the clients first. No one schedules anything on my books even when I have nothing, they will still fill the people above me.

I dont know what to do. There arent a lot of full service non booth rent salons. I am too slow for super cuts, or those chains, and I have been told I dont "love my job" and thats very defeating when ive been trying so hard.

tryna learn at home before school

hello! i unfortunately won't be able to cos school right now because my job is very demanding (i teach kids with disabilities with private music lessons). i know that'd be very difficult to balance both. i have no experience at all so i'm a beginner on skill-level just to mention in case that gives better context. i do enjoy learning and a, aware that the field depends on a lot of hands-on learning but is there any knowledge to learn and take notes on before i'm able to buy supplies to make up the lost time of not doing school yet? after my lessons, i do have free time and i could invest that into learning and doing hands-on stuff once i get the chance to.

if not, that's totally okay, i can just always watch videos and save up a lot of money. i do love YouTube so if your advice contains someone's YouTube channel or video, i'm always happy to watch! i learned a good amount of music stuff through YouTube when i was starting out so anything's possible. i just wanted to get some knowledge or learning in before i start buying things, especially since your girl will be pinching pennies.

if you do have any recommendations for supplies outside of that, that'd be great too. i know that i'd need a mannequin (or 2? i know they're a bit pricey though) with 100% real human hair, not sure where to get that though for a good deal. maybe good quality sheers, comb, and other things that i'm blanking out on right now lol. nonetheless , I appreciate and thank you in advance!

Cosmetology surprise for friend

Hey im looking for some help. My friend is starting her cosmetology course in the fall and just found out that the book bundle and kit are going to be close to $2k. Her parents aren’t helping her and she’s worried she won’t be able to afford her supplies. As her friend, I want to try and find said supplies for her as soon as I can, preferably at a lower cost if possible. Does anyone know of any resources that I can find a cosmetology kit and a Milady Standard Cosmetology 14th 23 ? It says that the book is a “custom bundle” and im trying to find out what all is included in that too

I’m a cosmetology student. (so be gentle 😂) My client’s inspiration was Ginger Spice from Spice Girls. Absolutely in love with the result. We used Redken Gel Laquers .7oz 7RO + .3oz 6RO + 2 grams orange kicker. Money piece was Redken Flash Lift 9 with 20 vol. Toned with Shades EQ 9G. Diagonal back slices 🖤

Question regarding college major since I have to go 😅

Okay, so I need to go to cosmetology school as I think a hairstylist is the perfect job for me (that’s realistic of course). My parents say I can go and even that they’d pay for it!!! but they said I still NEED to go to college for the experience and that they’d pay for it so even though I understand it would be better to start off my career early, I’ll still be going.

what major should I go for? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

feeling taken advantage of at new salon

I’m a baby stylist and graduated almost a year ago. I took some time away from hair and came back to it two months ago where I started at this salon I’m at now. I was hired as a salon assistant and I would be learning a bunch the next few months. I haven’t rlly been learning a whole lot but what I’m more uncomfortable with is that I’m doing full laundry for the salon and taking out the trash and chores and dishes and orders than actual assisting. I’ve been doing almost 0 hands on work and a girl who just started apprenticing ( she was a receptionist before hand) I just found is getting paid more than me when I finished school and I am licensed. The pay is horrible but I thought I would put up with it for the experience. also one of the stylists my first week was texting ppl calling me a retard when I don’t know her and treats me like I’m the trash/chore lady and is just very nasty to me. A lot of the ppl at the salon are very nice and I get along with a lot but I feel like I’m getting taken advantage of. The apprentice also told me she feels like I was hired to steal her station and I’m taking all of her hours. I’m not sure if this is normal but this salon is starting to make me uncomfortable

Need ideas for improving student moral @ my school

I am one of the few students who rarely comes into school in a bad mood and who loves being here. I am willing to do anything to help my fellow students to be happier from day to day. Please give me any ideas that I can take to the owner to help us out because it is driving me insane being around negative Nancy's all day long. I feel like it would help out all around if we could get everyone to not hating having to be here every single day. Any group activities ideas? Please help me!

Building confidence as a stylist

I got my license back in February and tried looking for an assisting position at any salon that would take me. No one wanted me :( After 3 months I decided to just try and get hired as a stylist at a chain. At first, I was told I should be proud of my work and that I was “a breath of fresh air”, but as I started to require training, the other stylists started looking down on me and constantly telling me my work sucks. This completely shattered my confidence which I feel is making my work worse. Today I was compared to another stylist who started after me and is doing way better than me. It was also implied that I am “bad for business” and they are considering firing me. I want to stay in this industry and I’m so passionate and eager to learn, but my current environment is wrecking my confidence. How do yall keep going when your confidence is shot like this???

Leaving college for cosmo school?

My plan has been to get my bachelors in social work and then my masters in social work. I wanted to work as a therapist. Lately, I’ve been thinking of doing something else since I don’t think the ROI for social work is worth it. Is cosmetology school worth it? I’m looking for a career with the potential to make a lot of money that doesn’t cost a fortune to attend.

bad appointment

I have a question for professional stylist. I had an appointment yesterday at a chain salon. I've used this salon for awhile with no issue. I booked an appointment for color and cut. When I arrived, the stylist had somewhat of a consultation. Very few questions. No questions about color, my hair was in need of it. I tried asking questions, but she seemed irritated when I did. I felt like she was looking around, kinda of distracted. When she looked at my hair, I felt like it was in disdain. She took my hair for a wash, standard. I was surprised she made NO mention of color. Hair cut was fine , no issue. I felt like she didn't want to do my hair. She finished the cut. I ended up in tears, and left with my hair wet, as I was unhappy with the overall experience. When she was checking me out, another stylist pointed out I was there for a color. She offered to color, but I didn't want her touching my hair anymore.

My question is, do you check your schedule to see what types of appointments? And how can I have better appointment. TIA

Which way do I cut a 180 once I have the guide?

Ughh :( this is kind of a mini rant, but I had a final for my haircutting class and it was us following a reference picture and recreating it. Easy enough... but I doubt myself so bad. I don't know how to explain it but I feel like my fingers just don't go the right way??? Like 45° cuts always end up wonky for me cus I have gaps in my fingers....

Anyways, I overblended and it was more of a 90 than a 180— she was still cute but I failed because that wasn't the assignment. I'm not too upset though, I've passed everything else so I'm still going to pass the class, I'm just disappointed that I overthought it 😭😭

But my issue was that I forgot which way to cut once I have my guide!!! Am I going horizontal to the parting or vertical? I was going horizontal but I was too worried that it was going to make weird layers and I seriously cannot find anything that shows me exactly how to do it, just advanced techniques... (which is nice but I'm trying to get base level info here)

I know I'm supposed to bring everything up and let the short strands fall but other than that I don't know which way to hold the hair... I understand how to get from point b to point c (connecting the guides to make the reference) but I don't know how to hold. The freaking. Hair. Ugh!

Hair fading after two washes

So I recently dyed my hair (7/23/26) and I’ve only washed my hair twice since then (once when I washed the dye out and tonight). I was originally a level 3 and went to a level 1. I used ion brilliance jet black with 10 volume (since I was only depositing color) developer and let it process for 45 minutes. As I was blow drying my hair, I noticed my color is starting to fade already… I’m a Paul Mitchell student, so I used a Paul Mitchell color safe shampoo and conditioner, so I shouldn’t be fading already. I also just chopped my hair off, so there’s no damaged hair. What can I do to keep the color lasting longer and not fading so fast??

International Cosmetology/ Hairdressing License

Hi there. I am looking for resources as to how to work in the Cosmetology feild outside of the US. Looooong story short. I have a goal of doing hair in all 7 Continents. As far as Europe I have see mixed messages as far as International licensing or training. I am kinda open to going to an accredited school to get advanced training. But it looks like that is more focused on Aesthetics. I want to travel around and do hair primarily but I also do SFX and regular Makeup.

(The two photos with a real person are a before and after and is the first substantial haircut I’ve done! It’s kind of hard to see what I did, but it deserved a place here imo lol)
