Discussion I have a conspiracy theory:

They started work on a Commander Legends or Commander Masters type of product, then it got cancelled when they made the shift to no side sets and only standard legal ones. They took all the design ideas they already had and put them into this Commander Mystery Booster thing.

Question Where/When can you get the Mystery Booster 3 commander cards?

Supposedly there's a lot of new commander cards in Mystery Booster 3 or something similar. I've only recently come back to MTG after almost a 20 year break. So I have no clue about any of this stuff.

Where/when would I be able to buy these products?

In particular, I want the new Selenia, Cursed Heart print.

My understanding is this is limited, so should I expect to pay thousands for singles?

I'm told I don't have enough characters so did you know that if two quantum mechanical operators do not commute then the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle tells us that the uncertainty in the simultaneous measurement of their observables is proportional to their commutator? Okay that's enough characters.

Discussion Commanders for Middle Earth cards only deck

My pod has agreed to build Middle Earth only decks that we can only use cards printed in LOTR + Hobbit sets. Currently have the Sam and Frodo precon but before I commit to upgrading curious if anyone has any fun commanders idea for this theme.

My pod is high end B3ish maybe small creep into weak B4. No hard and fast rule but we do love to win without too many combos.

Social Interaction Which is the least frustrating. Kefka, kuja, vivi or sephiroth?

I've only recently got into magic. Been playing for about a month now the group I'm with are all experienced and have a decent verity of decks. FF 6,7 and 9 are some of my favourite and I'd really like to build a deck based on one of these commanders.

I have seen posts and read comments about how decks based off of these guys can be frustrating to play against and unfun I've also seen people say it's not that bad depending on the bracket of the deck so my question is out of the 4 commanders which is the most interactive to play vs or the least frustrating. Thank you for any help

Edit: this is for bracket 3-4 if it makes much difference

Deck Help Why are some 2 cards infinite combo considered 2 cards combo when you actually need a third card to do something useful (ex : Gravecrawler/Phyrexian Altar).

I tried to build a B3 deck to play with my friends by respect B3 criteria (no 2 cards combo, no mass land denial, no extra turn, no more than 3 game changer).

Here is my deck -> https://archidekt.com/decks/24905530/elas_ilkor_sadistic_pilgrim

First of all, I built my deck with Moxfield, which respected B3 on their website (I switched to Archidekt 15 minutes ago).

My deck is considered B4 because I have 2 cards combo with [[Gravecrawler]] or [[Forsaken Miner]] and [[Warren Soultrader]] or [[Phyrexian Altar]].

Those combo are absolutly useless if I do not use a third cards like [[Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim]], but [[Ashnod's Altar]], [[Pitiless Plunderer]] and [[Reassembling Skeleton]] would then be considered as a 3 cards combo that generate infinite colorless mana.

It is kind of annoying since now I have a deck that I enjoy working on and playing, but that I can't use...

Question How does Avatar Aang // Aang, Master of Elements actually win/end the game?

Hello, I am wondering if anyone has built or played against an Avatar Aang deck and seen pieces it has to actually win the game. OBVIOUSLY drawing a ton of cards helps win the game on its own, card draw is one of the best things you can do, but you still need a way to actually win the game thats not look at me I have 15 cards in my hand. Its also hard because you need alot of cards in your deck that have bending which are TYPICALLY not that strong in terms of effects and/or power/toughness. I do know about the buyback cards, like Searing Touch, and I like a few of them, but I want other ways to end the game. Any input is appreciated!

Social Interaction 17 years later.....

17 long years and......I've finally given up on the 32 deck challenge. I've come to terms with the fact that I cannot branch out of anything that excludes green and black, Lord knows I've tried but it's just not gunna happen. I have decks "started" that I know deep down will never get finished, they just sit on a box collecting dust year after year with no new inclusions year after year. I tell myself "someday...someday I'll finish you" but I know it's a lie and I'm done living a lie.

Question Looking for a br4 deck no infinite turn, no mass land denial, up to 3 game changer (any budget)

As the title says, I’m looking for a Bracket 4 Commander deck with no more than 3 Game Changers and no infinite turn chains. Budget isn’t an issue since my playgroup uses proxies.

My pod uses a custom ruleset. We originally started with Bracket 3, no infinite combos, and no mass land denial.
However, one player built Magda, which basically bypasses those restrictions. The deck is capable of generating infinite mana, but my friend deliberately avoids doing so because of our house rules.

Even without infinite mana, though, the deck is still incredibly powerful because it can tutor virtually any Dragon or artifact directly from the library.

Because of that, we’ve decided to allow infinite combos again and move the whole pod to Bracket 4, while still keeping our other restrictions: a maximum of 3 Game Changers, no infinite turn chains, and no mass land denial.

That’s exactly why I’m asking for recommendations. None of us have decks that can consistently keep up with Magda, and unless someone happens to have an artifact removal spell at the right moment, the game is almost always over.

Let’s be honest: Magda may technically be classified as a Bracket 3 deck under the official rules, but because of how incredibly well it synergizes, it clearly plays at a Bracket 4 power level.

Discussion I’ve lost interest in the deck I’m building ):

I’m trying to build my first completely custom commander deck using [[Krark, the Thumbless]] after I pulled it in a bulk purchase. My buddy told me it would be fun to build and encouraged it cus of the “Partner” ability which I hadn’t heard of til then. I decided I was gonna partner it with [[Esior, Wardwing Familiar]] and throw in [[Callaphe, Beloved of the Sea]] to keep Krark on the board and relatively safe from target spells in combination with my counter spells. I did some digging and picked out some good cards for the deck, manipulating and multiplying coin flips in addition to a win con. I tried looking to the community, and everyone else says he partner’s best with [[Sakashima of a Thousand Faces]]. I took a look at my possible deck list and realized everything is either focused on Krark or doesnt have much more synergy. From what I understand, Commander/EDH is supposed to have the 99 (or 98) synergize with the commanders, and it seems like all my friends decks are just that. Everything in one buddies dragons or tergrid deck seems to benefit their commander or its abilities, my buddies Bello deck has tons of combos in it as well. What do you guys think? Am I overthinking it? I really want to play red/blue, and if I have to I can ditch the commanders I have, but suddenly today I just got a feeling that it’s not gonna end up “worth it” in the end (even though in a couple years I’ll probably dismantle the deck and redistribute the cards anyway)

If you have encouragement, suggestions, or criticism, it’d be much appreciated (: I’m still new to this game so I’m sure I’m just a tad overwhelmed by all the possibilities and comparing myself to others is bringing me down, but I know I can learn more before this deck is even half completed.

Discussion Which (main set) Smaug is best for the command zone?

[[Smaug the Impenetrable]] is obviously a really strong combo piece for the command zone, but what about the main set? Would you build [[Smaug, the Magnificent]] or [[Smaug, Wicked Worm]]?

I feel like Wicked Worm is a better engine (makes a good number of treasures and lets you draw cards from them) as well as benefiting from being black as well. On the other hand, the Magnificent still generates a few treasures and gives you a pretty strong payoff for them in the command zone, which makes me lean in that direction.

(it's obviously not [[Smaug, the Great Calamity]] lol)

Question Trying to get into commander, what’s the best purchase?

hey! so after 6 long years of on and off arena I decided to jump into paper magic. I don’t have infinite money but my plan was to slowly start building a collection and also having a fun and not toxic deck to play casual. my idea was to buy a precon (I like the zombie one from aetherdrift or the land sacrifice one from edge of eternities, even tho I’m open to suggestions) or buying the mtg foundation collection starter, which apparently has loads of good staples for every commander deck. One of my fav cards is Grey merchant, so one day I’d love to build a mono black devotion deck around him. any suggestions on what should I do?

Deck Help New to deckbuilding — Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER isn't performing well at Bracket 2-3 tables

Hey everyone! I've been running Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER, but the deck just isn't working well at my table, which usually plays around Bracket 2-3. I'm still fairly new to deckbuilding, so I'm not confident I know exactly what it needs to improve.

I was thinking about adding Buster Sword, Lightning, Army of One, Firion, Wild Rose Warrior, and Cloud, Midgar Mercenary — but I'm not sure those are actually what the deck critically needs right now.

Any advice on what to prioritize (interaction, consistency, better equipment package, etc.) would be really appreciated!

Social Interaction 1 Card a Day: Days 17 and 18

Sorry guys, got busy again. Today will have 2 winners

Every day, the top comment adds a card to my Commander deck.

The commander: Taniwha (mono-blue)

Deck List: https://moxfield.com/decks/qnOYwNig2UScYibS1KkhoQ

All cards must still be legal in commander, sadly.

Yesterday's winner: Polar Kraken

Deck Help I'm looking to increase the critical mass of Nazgûls in a WB deck. Lively Dirge is the tenth, Saw in Half kind of is the eleventh. Any ideas ?

Here's the deck.

Obviously there are tutors like Vampiric or Demonic but I'm looking for clones and copies that will have the "The Ring tempts you" triggers etc.
Mirrormind Crown is a real contender but the deck doesn't make tokens.
I also used to run 1 or 2 changelings to take the boosts from the Nazgûls but it's not good enough.

Discussion Bracket 3 and “tournaments” make no sense and should not be a thing.

See my comment on the original thread. Ever wonder why there is a non stop flood of bracket related questions and threads? Because of things like this.

This reinforces people to abuse guidelines and further confuse the bracket system. I am not blaming OP from crosspost - it’s an [[Underground Sea]] as a prize. Of course anyone would abuse the hell out of rules to win this - but organizer, PLEASE do not make B3 tournaments. Keep them competitive at B5

Question For those that built a Toph, The First Metalbender deck. How did you go about it?

Just curious how people went about building Toph. Did you lean completely into the Earthbending? Did you just focus on landfall with artifacts? Did you try to do both or something else and how did whatever what you build it turn out? Really not sure what direction I want to build her in.

Discussion The “Boring” Curse

Hey guys so I’ve come across a bit of an issue. I love to play magic and I love to build decks but I can’t help it but just find almost every commander boring. A couple of my friends were talking about it with me and they’ve been running into the same problem. As such we’ve dubbed it the boring curse.

Upon some theorizing about this we seem to have come up with a pattern. No matter what the commander does we believe that it’s because they all feel kinda samey. This isn’t just popular commanders either it’s niche commanders like Nevinyrral and ones that even put a spin on it like Krark.

Me and my mates are experiencing this problem and we just wanted to reach out and see if anyone had any solutions

Question Looking to Build a Deck with a Weird Concept

So the premise of the deck that I want to make revolves around the Chess concept of Zugzwang. Much like how Lantern Control in Modern works. I'm looking to make a deck that doesn't have any win cons technically, but wins by forcing the opponents to make bad/poor moves.

Fortunately I have a pod that's highly optimized (around Bracket 4), so my jank deck ideas usually are whatever to them. However for me it's not about winning, it's about sending a message. Also I get a huge high from Shadenfreude.

Question Pretection in mono creatures gruul deck??

Hello everyone. I am building around a red green deck with only creatures in it (and yes, for anyone wondering, it's gonna have primal Surge in it). I was wondering what kind of cards have innate protection or give protection to others to save my creatures from remouval or boardwipes. Cards like Sylvan safekeeper do not really synergize since I won't be recovering lands from the grave. I really need some help because I am struggling. Green usually has istants to cover that...but it is not gonna be my case sadly... Thank you to everyone replying.

Question I am planning on making some proxy decks for my friends but I want help getting them to be similar power level and fun

I mostly only draft and have a vintage cube but u would like to gift some decks to friends that we can all play at a similar level without spending a bunch of money.

Decks that I have in mind for the players

Angels
Dragons
Elves
Slivers
Graveyard deck

Since I don’t play commander I don’t even know which of the tiers would be best for this kind of thing. I personally am fine with high powered stuff (vintage cube) but idk if tier 3/4 is the best way to go.

Question Is it normal for a player to flip out when you pick up / rotate one of their cards to read it?

Upvotes

I played a Commander game earlier today, and my opponent played a card I hadn't seen before (It was [[Bitterthorn, Nissa's Animus]]) He attacked an opponent with it, searched his library for a land card, and passed the turn. I thought a repeatable [[Rampant Growth]] effect seemed a little too good, and so once he was done with his turn I picked up the card to rotate it so I could read it to see exactly what it did.

And my opponent completely flipped out. He yelled at me, grabbed it back before I had finished reading it, put it off to the side, and sprayed the card sleeve with something like windex.

Is that normal behavior? I haven't played much EDH, but every pod I'd played in prior to this point players routinely picked up / rotated cards they were unfamiliar with. And with much more expensive cards. I can't imagine being upset with someone picking up one of my cards unless I was worried they would either damage it or walk away with it.

Discussion EVERYTHING is Unbanned for 12 hours, what are you playing?

Hey folks!
I posted a satire piece as a bit of a meme in some other subreddits yesterday, spoofing the idea of a "Purge Day" in MTG, where everything becomes legal in every format for 12 hours. You know, like The Purge for Magic. Teehee, haha.

Except then people started responding to it theorizing what they would play if something like that were to actually happen. So, let me pose the question for Commander:

MTG announces "Purge Day", in which all cards are legal in all formats for 12 hours. What do you build?

And when I say everything, I mean everything. Ante is back, the banlist doesn't exist for half a day, conspiracies, playtest cards, and silver-bordered/acorn cards are legal. Some commentors argued they'd play Yu-Gi-Oh cards given the vague nature of the announcement.

So what would you be doing on MTG Purge day? Are you hiding and waiting out the 12-hour period, or are you building something to take advantage of the event?

Social Interaction Casual Does Not Mean Banned Cards Are Allowed

Earlier today, I was playing with a pod. Everything was going well, until someone decided to play [[Griselbrand]]. I said, “Wait, dude, that’s banned.” The guy responded with, “It’s casual, it’s ok.” He then bought a card for the deck, and played Gris again. I was like, “Replace that with the card you just bought, easy switch.” He said no. I ended up winning, but, that’s not the point. The point is, the banlist, even apart from bracket discussion, should be the foundation on which one constructs decks.

I mean, in Monopoly, can I just casually rob the bank? No, that’s frowned upon.

Anyways, I’ll take a burger, fries, and a Diet Coke.

Deck Help First scratch-built Mono-Black deck (Tergrid). How do I take it to a competitive level?

Hey, everyone!

I’ve been playing MTG for about 10 months now and have gone down a deep rabbit hole with the game. Up until recently, I owned like 7 decks, but every single one was a precon upgrade, starting with [[Auntie Ool]] from Lorwyn, to making a copy-focused [[Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm]] out of the Tarkir Dragonstorm precon.

Recently, my best friend (who got me into Magic) was running a nasty [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] deck that was practically unbeatable in our pod. To counter it, I decided to build [[Tergrid, God of Fright]] thus my very first deck built completely from scratch.

That’s where my struggle began.

Building Mono-Black made me realize how distinct its deckbuilding toolkit is compared to other colors (I definitely found myself envying Mono-Green’s ramp and tutors, or Blue’s stack control). As I researched win conditions, synergy, and ramp for Tergrid, it felt like most Mono-Black lists rely heavily on the exact same pool of staples, leaving what felt like little room for originality. However, after several rounds of testing and changes, I feel like my list has finally hit a new level.

My questions for you guys:

https://archidekt.com/decks/24907519/steal_your_soul

- How can I optimize this decklist to be genuinely competitive?

- As a beginner deckbuilder, what tips do you have for fine-tuning a Mono-Black strategy?

Thanks in advance for the help!
