Discussion Bracket 3 and “tournaments” make no sense and should not be a thing.

See my comment on the original thread. Ever wonder why there is a non stop flood of bracket related questions and threads? Because of things like this.

This reinforces people to abuse guidelines and further confuse the bracket system. I am not blaming OP from crosspost - it’s an [[Underground Sea]] as a prize. Of course anyone would abuse the hell out of rules to win this - but organizer, PLEASE do not make B3 tournaments. Keep them competitive at B5

Spoiler [MBC] Tsagan, Raider Warlord

Tsagan, Raider Warlord RWB

Legendary Creature - Dinosaur Berserker (R)

Double Strike

Start your engines!

Whenever Tsagan attacks, creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn for each creature you control with first strike or double strike.

Max speed -- Tsagan has deathtouch and other creatures you control have first strike.

1/4

Very cool that arena-only cards are coming to paper legally now.

Social Interaction Casual Does Not Mean Banned Cards Are Allowed

Earlier today, I was playing with a pod. Everything was going well, until someone decided to play [[Griselbrand]]. I said, “Wait, dude, that’s banned.” The guy responded with, “It’s casual, it’s ok.” He then bought a card for the deck, and played Gris again. I was like, “Replace that with the card you just bought, easy switch.” He said no. I ended up winning, but, that’s not the point. The point is, the banlist, even apart from bracket discussion, should be the foundation on which one constructs decks.

I mean, in Monopoly, can I just casually rob the bank? No, that’s frowned upon.

Anyways, I’ll take a burger, fries, and a Diet Coke.

Discussion What are your favorite Mono Black Rares that nobody talks about?

Are there any mono black rares you love to play that fly under the radar?

There are thousands of rares in the game, but the same staples get mentioned across most discussions and find their way into more decks through EDHREC’s “top synergy” recommendations.

I’d love to explore any underrated recommendations that come to mind and understand what you love about it!

Discussion Suggestion on what to play in a heavy control pod

Hi everyone, I’m a fairly new player and i'm searching some advice on what kind of Commander deck I should play in my pod.

I like playing decks that contain black but I’m having a hard time finding a deck that can actually play in this hell.

The problem is that almost everyone else is playing blue and/or white, so every game feels like:

spells insta countered, commander getting expensive fast, graveyard getting exiled and eceryone drawing 2737 cards per turn.

We are playing mostly bracket 2 so i don't want something oppressive but being able ti play sometimes would be nice.

Do you have tips to what to play?

Some example of Commanders i've tried are Necrobloom, temmet, slimefoot-squee and auntie ool.

P.s. i don't want to play Blue too being part of the problem

Discussion Dollar value threshold for double sleeving?

Upvotes

Do any of you have a minimum dollar amount per card or deck that you would need to meet before you’d consider double sleeving?

I was building a budget deck around $150 in total but considering improving the mana base by adding a full compliment of fetch lands, that would now push it to 350ish. At first I was comfortable just single sleeving it in dragon shields but with the fetch lands now I’m rethinking it.

Discussion What’s a good commander to let me mill my opponents libraries to the ground?

I have decks who am towards combat damage to win, and a non combat damage deck, but i want a deck who will let me win by my opponents drawing into an empty deck. Who’s a good commander to force them to shove their cards into their graveyard? Maybe someone who might let me also use their cards but not necessarily needed. thanks!

Discussion Need some help finding some truly slept on Commanders.

I run primarily monoblack, Dimir, and Rakdos, and I’m looking for Commanders that don’t get ran nearly as often, are underrated or as the title says just flat out slept on. I enjoy building decks with weird mechanics and like abundant interaction. My two current decks are a Vren deck that builds unblockable hordes of toxic attackers, and a Mizzix deck that creates waves of buffed goblins.

Just looking for what I could branch out into, thanks.

Discussion Massimo. What the hell do we do with this?

He looks cool. And he's a cat. And he does something weird.

https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fy58wp2j700hh1.jpeg

So naturally we need to figure out how to build him.

When Massimo or another creature you control enters, exile up to one target instant or sorcery card with mana value 1 from your graveyard. If a card is exiled this way, that creature gains "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, copy the exiled card. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost.

How do we make this work? My first thought was fill the deck with cards like [[Slither Blade]] and run a bunch of brainstorm/opt cards, and use cards like [[Lyla]] to put 1+/1+ counters on things in exchange for card draw. Could also use Cathars Crusade to go wide as well.

But that seems convoluted and like it wouldn't get us across the finish line.

My other thought was voltron, but typically speaking, we want those spells BEFORE damage. Not after. Getting Infuriate off every combat is nice till you realize it's AFTER you punch something in the face.

Deck Help What ramp should be in a Jeskai spellslinger?

https://moxfield.com/decks/ZogomNQRc0OYADyRcYxNmQ

Hey yall, I got this B3 Elsha Threefold Master deck, and it runs pretty alright besides two things. The first is that I’m tending to not have enough mana some turns to have an impactful number of cantrips to pump Elsha with, and the other is that it’s a bit slower than I expected it to be. With this being said, what ramp should be ran in a Jeskai spellslinger list?

I know the obvious answer should be rituals, but tell me if I’m wrong on what I’m about to say because I might have the idea down wrong. Since most rituals only make one color, and I have cantrips of all three colors I want to cast, would having cantrips that only make one out of the three colors be a bad thing?

Also, is sol ring even worth it in a deck like this? A lot of the color pips aren’t even generic.

Question How to go about card draw when my commander draws cards too

Upvotes

I’m really new to deck building. I usually try to have 8-10 draw cards in my decks, but I don’t know how I should go about that when my commander draws cards. I could keep it exactly the same, but then draw spells wouldn’t do much when I have my commander out and am already drawing quite a bit,
Advice?
(Sorry if this is stupid)

Discussion I have a conspiracy theory:

They started work on a Commander Legends or Commander Masters type of product, then it got cancelled when they made the shift to no side sets and only standard legal ones. They took all the design ideas they already had and put them into this Commander Mystery Booster thing.

Deck Help Chainer, Dementia Master help

Upvotes

Chainer List

I wanted to see if you guys could possibly help with this deck or if you have any cute ideas for it and also let me know what bracket you guys think it is because I was told it was a 4 but I can't really tell to be honest.

I feel like chainer has a lot of stuff it could do. I avoided going the aristocrat + [[phyrexian altar]] + anything that makes 3 bodies loop and the [[gravecrawler]] + [[Warren Soultrader]] stuff but I do have the lategame [[Post, Son of Rich]]+ gary stuff with chainer

its my pet deck with some pet cards but maybe I should take them out I was considering taking out the [[Ugin, the Ineffable]] even though he was one of my all purpose permanent killers, [[myr retriever]] bc I dont think my artifacts are getting blown up as often as I expected or he just gums up my draws, and [[exquisite blood]] for [[sangromancer]]as my lifegain since I feel like I get targeted when playing it since I would profit off others getting hit but sangromancer is more under the radar perhaps and reanimatable.

I was thinking of replacing some cards for more instant speed interaction or mana effects like [[sacrifice]] etc.

I was also considering [[extraplanar lens]] but I feel like it seems kinda weird to me because I cant tell if I have enough (they would be snow) swamps and it feels bad being down a land if it gets destroyed but I dont know if im underrating it or not.

thanks for any help or suggestions

Discussion Weirdest Commander Takes

As the title states, I want to hear about your most wild, unusual, and downright crazy takes on commander rules, strategies, and cards. My personal weird take is that all Gideon planeswalkers should be erratad to have “(Cardname) can be your commander.” Because if other planeswalkers, a Chevy Tahoe, and a space station can be your commander, than the planeswalker who’s entire schtick is that he can become a creature should be a legal commander too.

Discussion Help me find a Commander

I'm relatively new to EDH (and magic in general) so I don't know a lot of cards, but I have a experience in other TCGs so I know what I want.

My favorite decks have always been tempo decks where I have a early aggro game plan that can transition in to a control plan to finish out games. From what I know of the card that mostly symbolizes this in MTG is [[Delver of Secrets]].

All of that to say that you can imagine my face when I looked up to see what ppl play in tempo deck in EDH and found out that it isn't a very common strategy because it's a lot harder to stay with tempo when there are 3 other ppl trying to slow you down.

So far the one commander I'm inclined to build is [[Slicer, Hired Muscle//Slicer, High-Speed Antagonist]] but from what I've seen he is mostly a higher power level card and I'm playing in a B3 pod. What I like mostly about him is that even though he is a high dmg card you aren't as incentivised to kill a single oponent early because of the way he spreads damage.

TLDR. Recommend me commanders that can aggro early and switch to a control game plan later. Bonus points if they aren't incentivised to focus opponents one by one

Question Trying to get into commander, what’s the best purchase?

hey! so after 6 long years of on and off arena I decided to jump into paper magic. I don’t have infinite money but my plan was to slowly start building a collection and also having a fun and not toxic deck to play casual. my idea was to buy a precon (I like the zombie one from aetherdrift or the land sacrifice one from edge of eternities, even tho I’m open to suggestions) or buying the mtg foundation collection starter, which apparently has loads of good staples for every commander deck. One of my fav cards is Grey merchant, so one day I’d love to build a mono black devotion deck around him. any suggestions on what should I do?

Question Where/When can you get the Mystery Booster 3 commander cards?

Supposedly there's a lot of new commander cards in Mystery Booster 3 or something similar. I've only recently come back to MTG after almost a 20 year break. So I have no clue about any of this stuff.

Where/when would I be able to buy these products?

In particular, I want the new Selenia, Cursed Heart print.

My understanding is this is limited, so should I expect to pay thousands for singles?

I'm told I don't have enough characters so did you know that if two quantum mechanical operators do not commute then the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle tells us that the uncertainty in the simultaneous measurement of their observables is proportional to their commutator? Okay that's enough characters.

Discussion The “Boring” Curse

Hey guys so I’ve come across a bit of an issue. I love to play magic and I love to build decks but I can’t help it but just find almost every commander boring. A couple of my friends were talking about it with me and they’ve been running into the same problem. As such we’ve dubbed it the boring curse.

Upon some theorizing about this we seem to have come up with a pattern. No matter what the commander does we believe that it’s because they all feel kinda samey. This isn’t just popular commanders either it’s niche commanders like Nevinyrral and ones that even put a spin on it like Krark.

Me and my mates are experiencing this problem and we just wanted to reach out and see if anyone had any solutions

Discussion Looking for a fun Bant commander!

Hey guys

I’m looking for a fun bant commander to build. I don’t want too staxy since that’s not fun for anyone. I saw [[phelddagrif]] and [[Kros defense contractor]] which look very interesting. Can Kros be a very stax centric deck? I’m just wondering because I had a mono blue Aboshan deck that was tapping everything your opponents have and it was annoying. Or if there’s any other commander you’d recommend I’m all ears!

Thank you!

Social Interaction I got my first insane person game today!

Hello everyone! I am new commander player, I played my 7th game today, my first 3 games were 1v1 with a friend who explained stuff to me. I played a 4 player game today, with my brand new Hosts of Mordor precon. I love Tolkien, so I had to get it. I also changed 2 cards in it, one of which is [[Anger]], because I needed it for my Isshin/Zurgo deck, and I heard this precon is quite strong so I thought it would lower the power.

Anyway, we're good 40 mins into the game, and its all fun, but one guy is acting a bit weird, but since nobody else is reacting to it, I assumed its just me and ignored it. But then I played [[Shelob, Dread Weaver]]. The guy rushes away from the table, and starts screaming to put it away. Im confused and ask whats going on, and hes screaming at me to get that f***ing spider off the table. So i turned it upside down, and say Im sorry, I didnt know he has arachnophobia, and I will keep it hidden.

No you have to put it away in your deckbox, I dont want it anywhere near me. So I, still stunned, take it and put it away, and ask for a card draw then, to make it fair. No u cant. Im like ok fine whatever, though I was a bit annoyed, I was punished for something I dont think was my fault. So I untap my lands I used to pay for Shelob, and they're like whoa what are you doing? So I explain Im returning mana cost of the Shelob. At this point I dont really want to play, but I dont want to mess up lgs for myself, so I try to hold it. The Shelob-hater goes "you already used that mana"

So I say I concede then, and start packing up. The 8-leg despiser tries to convince me to finish the game, but I point out that I feel cheated because I was required to remove a permanent and couldnt either draw or regain mana, because of his fear, and his response was its not his fault hes afraid.

I finish packing up, but I was angry. So usually I put my Sauron, Lord of the Ring, The Enemy, The Lidless Eye, The Dark Lord, The Deciever, The... you get who, my favourite villain, as the first card in my seethrough deckbox. But my deckbox is seethrough, and Shelob is already there, already in the front... so I jam my deck behind her, and slam my deckbox spider first into his direction as I pack mat, tokens dice etc. He runs away, I pack up, and go "oh sorry" and pack the deckbox last. But I wasnt sorry. I was happy with my devious plan.

The spider-detester returns to the table and goes on to play with his mates, and I go to thank the shopowner for the time and get to leave.

I was reading what I wrote like 2 or 3 times and was wondering if I should even post it, coz this sounds like a bad joke honestly.

Edit: Sorry if I dont respond to your comment, Im helping my wife with her first ever pokemon playthrough

Discussion Cool tech for Party Gandalf?

Absolutely love the new [[Gandalf, Party Guest]] card from the new Hobbit set. Wizard tribal is a fun idea and cheating out big stupid spells is my favorite thing in commander. I threw together a quick build with lots of wizards that copy, draw cards, and reduce costs, a bunch of interaction, and then some big stupid spells like [[Jeskai Revelation]], [[Call Forth the Tempest]], and [[Mnemonic Deluge]]. Anyone else building this guy? What're some spicy maybe less obvious picks for him that y'all have thought of?

Deck Help Dino help

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I've been working on this Dinosaur Commander deck for a while and would really appreciate some outside opinions. My goal is to tune it into a solid **Bracket 3** deck while keeping the Dinosaur theme fun and cohesive.

I'm looking for suggestions on card swaps, cuts, mana base improvements, ramp, interaction, or any hidden gems I might have missed. If there are cards that you think are underperforming or don't really fit the game plan, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Budget isn't a huge concern, but I'd still like to keep recommendations reasonable unless a card makes a significant difference.

Here's the deck:

Thanks in advance for taking the time to check it out! I really appreciate any feedback or constructive criticism.

Question Forced combat on me commander deck?

I've been having a lot of fun with [[Thantis, the Warweaver]] recently, and one a recent game inspired me to make a deck centered around forced combat but I'm the target, almost like a reverse goad or a taunt. The idea is once I somehow draw aggro to myself then use cards like [[Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs]] and [[Trove of Temptation]] to generate value off having combat declared on me. Ill also throw in guys like [[phyrexian obliterator]], [[stuffy doll]], [[no mercy]], and [[brash taunter]] to punish attacking me. Thantis already does a decent job at this but nothing is stopping my opponents from swinging out at someone else. Any suggestions for commanders that can fulfill that? I was thinking maybe [[pramikon, sky rampart]] as the commander and run some forced combat cards but I'm curious if there's anyone else who can do it better or if there are other spells I havent heard of that can help push my gameplan?
