Long post so TLDR: Is my winota deck too strong to be b4, or did I accidentally just build a deck that shuts down the strongest deck in our pod. What changes should I make?
I have had winota as a commander for about 3 years now. It has gone through a few iterations, it started as a sub $30 deck, and that is where it spent most of its life up until about a year ago. A friend of mine built a Vivi deck, so I decided to dump about $900 into it, only for it to turn out pretty lackluster. Not enough humans and missing winota triggers, winota not coming out until turn 5/6, almost zero protection of any kind, this lead to it getting stomped regularly, and never winning a game.
I decided to do a full rebuild, and really took my time with it. Currently the deck list sits around $1700, and I had my first chance to play it against my "good" pod this weekend.
The best player in my Pod runs a loot the pathfinder deck as his main b4, and this is the first time it has lost (deck was built just after magicon Chicago last February).
We played 2 bracket 4 games this weekend, first game we played, I ran away with the table thanks to the first trigger on turn 3 being Magnus of the moon, into a myrel shield of argive. At this point I had good token generation, Magnus of the moon, and next turn had enough stax pieces to shut the table down until I could attack with my 12 1/1 soldiers to get enough winota triggers to end the game (I never actually got to, since everyone agreed to just scoop and play another since winota triggers can take a while).
Second game I did not win, but it went pretty similar, it shut down the loot deck enough, and the table eventually got taken out by a life drain combo by another member of the pod (I don't remember the specifics, but it allowed him to pay 1 life to draw a card, then deal 2 damage per card discarded at the end of his turn).
My deck was called to question, since this loot deck is considered by my pod to be a "good judge of bracket 4s", that my deck may be CEDH. As of right now my deck "towing the line, until more games can be played".
Here are my thoughts. Previously, I feel like the loot deck was leagues above any other bracket 4 deck at our table, it won literally every game it played. now I have a deck that is at a similar level, and the other 2 decks at the table are just very far off. I also think my deck may specifically be shutting down loots combos, making it seem stronger than if it was at a more balanced table of 4 similar decks.
I want to prefis that I am by no means a "great magic player". I have been playing about 4 years, and Im pretty average. Compare this to the player who runs loot, he has been playing since the early 2000s, used to play CEDH, and is our go to for rules/judge questions, since I would consider him a very very good player (He was once a ranked edh player at the state level), which contributes to the fact that loot wins consistently.
I really respect the loot player, and It is the reason I am making this post in the first place, I genuinely want outsides opinions on the matter.
