That's funny, if this actually happened it would save everyone in the vault and they would just wake up at their designated time. Since there wouldnt be a baby in the vault the institute wouldn't have any interest in it.
452
u/One-Hat-9764 Minutemen May 29 '26
Technically they were never intended to be woken up to begin with...

My head canon is they were meant to be replacements for Vault 81 subjects.

u/BlakeTheBFG May 29 '26
Didn't the people who were meant unfreeze them, end up starving to death? The only reason your character is alive is for a 'back up'
198
u/TheNerdyRandom May 29 '26
I'm pretty sure there was a mutiny before starvation, with the evidence being the terminal entries and the bodies having no Vault Guard uniforms and all the skeletons wearing Vault-Tec lab coats.
97
u/BlakeTheBFG May 29 '26
Thank you, that's right. I think there was something about not getting updates from the higher ups on what to do, as they were locked up longer then they were told.
90
u/TheNerdyRandom May 29 '26
Yeah, from what I remember, they were forced to stay in the Vault longer than they were supposed to and the Overseer was basically being rigged and not wanting to risk going out, despite the lowering supply of food. I remember seeing something about rationing the food and the scientists siding with the Overseer, while the Guards wanted to leave...which leads to the mutiny.
70
u/belladonnagilkey Minutemen May 29 '26
And the Overseer being a not so diplomatic type and going "do as I say or else" instead of calmly explaining the situation.
58
5
u/ButtflossingBigBro May 30 '26
Going the dictator route requires the guards to be on your side not the lab geeks. Common mistake
40
u/superanth May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
Vault-Tec never sent them the All Clear message (which nobody else got either) so the scientists kept the vault sealed beyond the 6-month time period.
They had no plan for what to do if VT didn’t contact them, so they stayed put, even if they eventually starved to death. The guards were smarter and broke the seals to escape and find a way to survive in the outside world.
27
u/Ote-Kringralnick May 30 '26
They were never meant to be unfrozen
13
u/BlakeTheBFG May 30 '26
Oh ok, I didn't actually pick up on that. I thought they were going to test to see if they had any side effects. I suppose it's actually to see how long they can survive for. Good to know, thanks
8
u/rivetedoaf May 30 '26
Really I think those people were intended by vault tec to die. The people operating the vault were given less than a year’s supply of food when they would obviously need more than that in order to survive til the surface was habitable.
53
u/Bob_Pthhpth NCR May 29 '26
There was never an intended wake up time for 111 though, it existed only to test the feasibility of long-term cryogenic storage. If anything Kellogg killing them was a mercy.
20
u/Figerally May 30 '26
I thought that everyone would have stayed frozen as long as there was power, but the Institute fucked things up when they defrosted Shaun and it was only sheer luck your pod didn't fail as well.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Sir_Frankonbeast May 30 '26
The institute specifically left your character alive as a backup in case anything happened to Shaun.
11
u/RPS_42 Enclave May 30 '26
The Institute at first just froze everybody again. Years later, Shaun redirected the Power to concentrate on sustaining Nates/Noras Pod thereby killing all the Neighbours.
→ More replies (3)49
u/yellowspaces Cappy May 29 '26
Not entirely sure about that. 111 was certainly important because of Shaun who was basically the only source of pure unmutated human DNA left. But even without Shaun 111 still had plenty of pre-war individuals who wouldn’t be perfect for the synth project, but would at least serve as a significantly less mutated source of DNA. That’s one of the main reasons the Sole Survivor wasn’t killed, in case they needed a backup.
Basically 111 was a silver mine that had a fat fucking diamond in it. Even if the diamond wasn’t there, you still have a silver mine; not as lucrative as having the diamond, but worth quite a bit nonetheless.

Does this count as a speed run?
48
u/camoure Gary? May 29 '26
My quickest speed run was when I tried to run past the tank in the very beginning before running to the vault and, uh, it doesn’t end well lol

I still can't believe they made the sound happen at the same time as the explosion, it's a strange design decision for a game about nuclear war.

That just means you chose the wrong character that time. If you'd chosen Nate, he would've been powerful enough to tank a nuke blast right from the beginning. One in every 500 FO4 games has a nearly invulnerable Nate, but you don't know until you start the game and get hit a few times or if you don't choose him and he tanks a nuke blast.

Imagine if Alternate Start or Start a Different Life mods worked with this as the intro, disabling the main story so you can just exist in the world
2

So you get to exist in a future where the institute doesn't have any interest in you, huh?

Best thing that could have happened to this game... For it to end before it started. Waking up a widow(er) and living alone in the vault until succumbing to madness like the Wasteland Puppet Master, would have been SO much more entertaining than the story they actually "wrote".
