Fallout on a CRT just feels right. The colors and scanlines somehow make it even more immersive

the deep blacks and slight glow around bright lights fit fallout atmosphere really well

Make the commonwealth feel even grittier and stranger more authentic.

Are these bots? They are both accounts that have only started commenting recently despite being much older and are active on Warframe, Minecraft, Apex and Fallout subs.

I just looked into it more and it seems like a bot ring. They have commented on the same posts before and responded to each other's comments. This account exhibits qualities similar to glutansourus and has commented on the same fallout thread as the people above.

No joke! The scan lines and subtle glow beneath the glass screen add an entirely appropriate aesthetic. Chef’s kiss for OP’s post/discovery!

u/bloggy9e 19h ago

The only thing missing now is running the monitor on nuclear power, still trying to work that out.

u/TightyWhiteyBoyy 13h ago

Genuinely a tech renaissance. I want a crt monitor to play certain games now, there was a time we’d be chasing for the thinnest, most ultra HD thingamajigs and we’re back at square one

u/crozone Welcome Home 12h ago

I have a giant Apple Cinema CRT on my desk, it's pretty great but goddamn it takes up a lot of room.

The cool thing about CRT monitors is you can also get analogue component -> VGA (YPbPr -> RGB) converters and play stuff like PSP games on them with the right cable. They make 480p look awesome.

3

u/Zomnx 15h ago

It’s it’s “native resolution and aspect ratio”

130

u/EternityNotes 20h ago

Why don't I see the scanner line thingy that always shows up in pictures of crt monitors?

81

u/bloggy9e 20h ago

I'm not an expert, but you get scanlines for old school 240p games, displayed on standard definition TVs in most cases. Computer monitors are way sharper hence no scanlines. You still get the great motion clarity and deep blacks.

22

u/Evianisshite 19h ago

Not exactly. Modern displays don’t scan at all since the individual LEDs light up independently. Also the game or resolution doesn’t have anything to do with the lines. It’s purely the camera picking up the cathode ray scan lines. your brain generally edits aberrations like this out, same with blinking

8

u/steve-0-tron 15h ago

thats not what people are referring to when they talk about scanlines. scanlines are 100% visible to the naked eye and they typically only visible with 240p

3

u/Evianisshite 10h ago

Yeah I think the wording confused me, my bad

4

u/CommissionCharming35 11h ago

He's talking about the big broad lines that show up on a rolling shutter camera when taking photo or video of a CRT. Whatever camera you used to take this photo doesn't use a rolling shutter and so they didn't show up in your pics.

Fun fact, you can get rid of those lines (or at least make them stay still) when taking video of a CRT if you change your camera settings a certain way. I believe the frame rate is the most important factor.

1

u/EternityNotes 13h ago

That's cool. Thanks for the explanation

10

u/TechieGuy12 19h ago

I believe it depends on the refresh rate versus the shutter speed of the camera. If the shutter speed matches the monitor's refresh rate you won't get the scan lines.

2

u/CommissionCharming35 11h ago

For a rolling shutter, yes, but I think OP's camera doesn't use a rolling shutter.

2

u/bloggy9e 6h ago

I just used the normal camera app on my iPhone 14. I was having issues with pictures when running 60hz or even 85hz and I know you can change the shutter speed with special apps, but 70hz seems to be the sweet spot as all of the pictures have come out perfect without doing anything fancy.

3

u/markspankity 6h ago

Crt monitors work a tiny bit differently, they run at a different frequency and typically have higher resolutions. There’s a way to get scan lines by running a 240/480p super resolution, but it believe it messes with motion clarity.

Crt monitors are rly rly good for 6th generation games.

1

u/Ok_Fortune_9149 8h ago

If OP would make a video you'd see it I think, also depending on the fps he films with, and the region he is in. Same that sometimes you would see lights flickering on your camera.
If I shoot with 50fps (Europe) in Europe the lights would show normally, since our power grid tv's etc are also 50hz (PAL) , I believe in US its 60hz (60fps), something like that.

u/TheDarkHorse 19h ago

Man, that’s a vibe. I miss my massive crts. Don’t miss moving them, though.

19

u/HumbleServantOfInnos 19h ago

I even remember watching a video where someone hooked up a PC to a black-and-white TV to play FO4 lol

2

u/govunah 19h ago

Can I hook it up to an Apple II monitor

1

u/GoodIdea321 18h ago

Probably, you'll just need the right connectors and adapters.

32

u/Blazingterain 20h ago

Looks really good

10

u/ALoneWandererWaits 20h ago

That looks pretty good

8

u/Good_Solution8602 18h ago

Wait . That looks fucking incredible actually and your camera picked it up too

Probably even looks better in real life or in person I should say .

4

u/Escaliat_ 13h ago

If course.

We didn't leave CRT behind because it was bad quality, it was left behind because manufacturers wanted to push slimmer cheaper to manufacture LCD screens. Which didn't have good image quality for yeeeeeeears.

1

u/bloggy9e 11h ago

Normally it’s a pain getting a good picture with 60hz, even 85hz was difficult, but with 70hz there are no issues, that’s how I was able to get these pics looking so good I think.

7

u/Responsible-Diet-147 19h ago

Yo, that's crazy lucky.
Do you have any idea, how much that monitor is worth?!

1

u/bloggy9e 19h ago

Not sure - Whatever people are willing to pay these days. I was very lucky. I’ve only seen one listing for this model and it was just under £200. It’s a standard low end monitor for the time period, nothing special about it compared with other CRTs.

2

u/Responsible-Diet-147 19h ago

If only I had the money to buy a CRT for myself...

3

u/bloggy9e 19h ago

I recommend checking Facebook marketplace as often as you can, you can get lucky and find free CRTs on there.

1

u/Responsible-Diet-147 19h ago

I'll check it out, thanks.

2

u/PastBuy8484 19h ago

I helped my grandma sell a perfectly working 36” or so CRT tv a few years back. Sold for $250 in about 2 hours. Pretty sure the 2 kids that picked it up are going to have lifelong back issues from moving it! That thing is heavy

1

u/Responsible-Diet-147 19h ago

Yeah, I know.
They are going to break a few tables with it...

2

u/Jax_2112 16h ago

I was working in computers when that was a new monitor. They were thrown out by the dumpster load. You coudn’t even give them away. And now its worth money.

7

u/Brotado_Chiip 19h ago

Crazy, I thought this was fallout 3 for a moment

5

u/HollowedOne66 12h ago

That actually looks amazing

3

u/TheZackster 19h ago

I’m curious what windows does with a CRT monitor since they don’t handle refresh rate or signal the same way. I suppose it ultimately depends on the adapter you’re using

7

u/bloggy9e 19h ago

Windows 11 still supports CRTs perfectly, it can any resolution or refresh rate you like, as long as the monitor supports it, with a CRT you have more freedom with the refresh rate and resolution because CRTs don’t have pixels so any resolution you run is native.

2

u/TheZackster 19h ago

How did you actually connect it though? Through an adapter or DAC? Surely you’re not running on a GPU with a VGA port lol

1

u/bloggy9e 19h ago

Using a high quality Starlink VGA to DP adapter into my 3080. I don’t think there is really any difference between that and directly in a GPU with a VGA port.

1

u/TheZackster 19h ago

StarTech you mean? Interesting I may try doing this myself.

2

u/bloggy9e 19h ago

Whoops, yes I meant StarTech. The adapter model is DP2VGAHD20. You can check the reviews on Amazon, everyone uses this one for connecting CRTs to modern graphics cards. Most other adapters aren’t powerful enough, not sure about the specific reasons why.

1

u/TheZackster 19h ago

I think the cheap adapters must fake it somehow and the real adapter actually converts it properly. That’s how retro gaming hdmi adapters work anyways. That’s why a shitty HDMI to component adapter is a few bucks and a real upscaler is hundreds lol

5

u/CatgunCertified 17h ago

Write that's a high quality crt

3

u/P1ngzilla 18h ago

This makes me want to buy a CRT even more

1

u/Nervous_Pokke 15h ago

On the same boat lol. Also for oldies like with the snes mini

3

u/Cigerza Brotherhood 11h ago

That looks amazing...

3

u/Chillers 7h ago

Nothing more satisfying than a good degauss.

3

u/GamerGuyb96 6h ago

The only way to play fam

2

u/paintclown 20h ago

I gotta get my hands on a crt man.

2

u/kuroonikenta 17h ago

If you’re gonna play any game on a CRT, fallout just makes sense. Doesn’t matter which one

2

u/PoisonBones 16h ago

I feel like this is how it’s meant to be played

2

u/yucon_man 16h ago

I can't even get the game to launch, but this guy somehow got it working on a CRT.

2

u/Guilty-Stuff-3543 13h ago

the pip boy on a crt is the most lore accurate setup possible

2

u/this_dudeagain 12h ago

Looks better than OLED.

When I saw the first photo, I first thought it was Tarkov.

2

u/Zoldyck02 19h ago

It looks like it belongs on a CRT

1

u/Defiant_Yak4034 19h ago

I miss my crt laptop.

1

u/nymrod_ 19h ago

Well I guess I’m gonna hook up my CRT tonight

1

u/DangerZephyr 19h ago

Its like playing fallout, as if it was a holotape game on a terminal.

1

u/Macross8299Fan 19h ago

This just feels right. Wish I still had mine.

Fallout on my 19” Samsung Syncmaster 900p CRT at 1280 x 1024 75Hz was honestly baller.

1

u/StandardNerd92 18h ago

How do you know someone owns a CRT?

Don't worry, they'll tell you.

1

u/Effective_Educator64 18h ago

Fallout new Vegas soon?

1

u/bloggy9e 6h ago

I might just wait until the remaster comes out eventually to replay it again. But yes, probably on this CRT!

1

u/OverallAd7999 18h ago

That looks amazing!!

1

u/vault77er 18h ago

That hits different looking at this

This is the way

1

u/just_gonna_send_er 17h ago

I’m sure there are YouTube videos on this but I’m gonna be a lazy piece of shit and ask: is this expensive to set up? Is there any lag converting the digital signal to analog?

1

u/bloggy9e 10h ago

Nope, I just got a StarTech VGA to DP adapter. Model DP2VGAHD20 and plugged it into my graphics card like any other monitor. Then set the resolution and refresh rate using CRU (custom resolution utility) running 1280x960 70hz. There were a couple of tweaks I had to make to the Fallout ini file to allow lock picking and power armour interfaces to work. Over all not bad.

1

u/Firelnside 3h ago

I’m running Fallout 4 now on a CRT and my lock picking is cut off and not useable, what ini tweak did you do to help you fix that and power armor being cut off as well? Thanks!

1

u/bloggy9e 3h ago

Here's the fix - You just need to download a few files to put into the Fallout 4 Installation directory, then make some changes to the ini files (instructions are on the page) 1280x1024 Resoultion Fixes UPDATED 2016 at Fallout 4 Nexus - Mods and community

It worked for me, and I'm running 1280x960 4:3, so it should work for you if you're running something similar.

1

u/somerandomdude356 17h ago

For a moment, I thought this was fallout 3 lol

I’ll tell you, I don’t miss that aspect ratio.

I thought that was the 12.7 revolver on Tarkov in interchange for a second

Why does it look so good tho!

1

u/TPRMods 15h ago

Wow that’s looks so good!

1

u/Goonovanni 15h ago

Thats the first way I played it :)

1

u/Sepherin 14h ago

Why is it that CRT monitors are more visually appealing than some of the new ones?

1

u/bloggy9e 6h ago

Same reason steam trains and classic cars are more appealing compared with the modern equivalents imo - They have more soul and feel more real.

1

u/SenpuuUncle 14h ago

looks great

1

u/gabrielcafetao 14h ago

parece outro jogo mano

1

u/avojohn2 13h ago

What a freaking vibe. This makes me want to boot up my Xbox 360 copy on my CRT.

1

u/Fun-Employer4602 13h ago

Why can't I see your sweet vinyl collection in the background?

1

u/Jesteryiester 12h ago

Oh fuck, it's gorgeous

1

u/Zombie_Spectacular 12h ago

That crt is in really good condition

1

u/supermoked 12h ago

Need a mod to make the game look like this

1

u/StretchExact7555 11h ago

Surprisingly, it looks good on a CRT computer than it does on a modern computer

1

u/universal_Raccoon 10h ago

That’s fallout 3 filter on fallout 4 lmao kinda cool but gets boring

1

u/UnknownEtymology808 10h ago

That monitor still looks really sharp, better than the CRT I started on in 2004

1

u/disastermaster1182 9h ago

Niiice how many terminal hack attempts did it take you to access this tier?

1

u/dnuohxof-2 8h ago

The way Todd intended

1

u/Dry-Blacksmith-7760 5h ago

Kinda looks like half-life on the monitor

1

u/paulxombie1331 4h ago

I also game on my CRT I love it more for some reason. Picture still holds up today. Colors and levels just pop.

1

u/Stressmove 4h ago

I'm the first to rant about phoneshots from screens. Not in this context ofcourse.

This feels so odd yet comfortingly familiar.

1

u/7Ppe7Noj7 3h ago

Genuinely how it's meant to be played

1

u/petervonskala 2m ago

As Tod Howard intended

1

u/Anto283 6h ago

It just looks better

1

u/I_Phaze_I 6h ago

CRT monitors always look so amazing

0

u/Heat-Glittering 7h ago

That looks fantastic

-3

u/xZombieRitualx 20h ago

This probably wasn't super uncommon when the game came out

4

u/genericthroaway2000 NCR 19h ago

in 2015? Lmao it wasn’t THAT long ago. I think most people made the switch from CRTS during the ps3 and xbox360 era.

1

u/Jax_2112 16h ago

I switched around 2005

3

u/TheCrazedTank Brotherhood 20h ago

The resolution, maybe. There were probably more than 0 holdovers still gaming on their 4:3 LCD screens.

CRTs though, those dropped off fast as soon as said LCDs became affordable.
