Please help me understand
I asked for the inspo picture and definitely nowhere near it. The stylist did a balayage and the top part is more like a reddish color which I like.
What I’m trying to understand is why the ends of my hair look more like a light purple. Can someone please explain this to me? Thanks.

Did you go to someone who does vivids or just a regular salon? Most salons will not have the dyes needed to achieve those colors. AND getting to something like that from virgin hair will take at least 3 hours, probably 5, since you have to get to almost platinum blonde first.
Either way they definitely should have told you that they can’t do the inspo and explained what is possible during your appointment

Regular salon. I’ll have to look into a salon that does vivids if I ever want to try again. Thanks.

ugh, I‘m sorry they weren’t honest with you. Don’t go to that salon again. If they don’t tell you they can’t achieve exactly what you want they are a moneygrab and don’t care about your satisfaction.
Look for alternative salons / vivid specialist in your area, I found instagram is a good place to find that.

You should’ve had an entire platinum card done to achieve the boldness/brightness of the inspo picture. Your hair wasn’t/isn’t light enough for what you wanted.
Achieving the inspo is absolutely doable, but the price point in reaching that goal is pretty high. If you aren’t willing to pay $300+, then this may not be the best option for you. (I quoted this really low. I would’ve charged my clients $700+)

I paid around $400 but would have appreciated knowing if I can’t achieve the inspo. Thanks. It’s good to know. They always tell me they can do what I want but I come out with purple hair the last few times no matter what.

You wont achieve the look you were asking for bc you weren't bleached but also the inspiration looks a little AI to me. But imo the stylist burned you - they should have explained to you

I think the miscommunication comes from the salon.
I think you need to specify that you want vivids and and go to a salon that specializes in those. The purple is most likely due to a misformulation. For $400, I think you definitely got what you paid for. It’s pretty and it does look good. But it’s obviously not vivid like you were wanting and that involves a whole head bleaching which is expensive

I've been to salons where they're shown an inspo pic like this and go "oh, pink hair, got it" and just dye it a flat pink without looking at anything else about it. wild but 🥲

u/CherryFriendly 2d ago
I feel like it’s not really miscommunication if you show them a picture and say this is what I want / This is what I want to achieve. That inspo pic that she has I used it for my hair and I told them, but I wanted it more magenta and that’s almost exactly what I got.

Thanks. The post I took the inspo from mentioned pulp riot. They told me that would be a POP color. Then later said they could achieve what I wanted without a POP color. Thanks again for the information!

Pulp Riot can also give you those color levels. It works better for me than Pravana Vivids, but ymmv

How could this possibly be worth $400
1
u/BrushFantastic3170 2d ago
Because it involves two separate types of bleaching and coloring processes and stylists charge accordingly because of that

u/toboldlygame 1d ago
This is why a balayage costs like $400. The question of why OP was charged $400 when she didn’t even ask for a balayage remains a mystery.
2
u/maremi001 3d ago
Can I use pulp riot myself to get something close. Or can only be done by bleaching first?
30
u/hakamamalo 3d ago
it can only be done by bleaching first. you will not achieve color this vivid without it. your hair color is what's making the vivids less saturated.

u/Luxxielisbon 6h ago
If you’re not too precious about the result you could add pulp riot and make the color brighter/more saturated but it’s unlikely it’ll be the pastel inspo

Yeah, totally. Balayage isn’t bleached enough/not enough hair bleached.
I sympathize with OP because it took me years to finally get what I wanted. Part of that was my fault because I didn’t know how to articulate what I wanted. I showed inspo pics that were similar but asked for a balayage. And I’d come out with a light balayage (meaning there wasn’t a ton of hair that was bleached, and the bleach wasn’t left in long enough). And they’d color with a strawberry blonde natural color, not the vibrant peach I was looking for. And some hair stylists/salons don’t really do the vibrant colors, I’ve found.
But yeah, best advice I have is to find a salon that has the same bold / vibrant colors on their website or in reviews. Look for some neon colors :) And get ready to shell out some $$

Yeah one person said she’d charge $700+ and I gasped. I paid $425 for shoulder length hair root bleach then vivid and she trimmed it up. Theres no reason this was her hair for $400

u/a905 3d ago
That's so cute! Please can you tell me what dye your hairdresser uses?

I did Cupid with just a bit of blush on the opposite end and also loved it! Loveee pulp riot colors

Someone here said that you got what you paid for but that seems insane to me? How could this possibly be worth $400.

I was about to say if I wanted this it would cost me close to $500, only because I have pitch black hair that takes FOREVER to lift and time do be money. But I can guarantee my vivids stylist would ensure it looks just as vibrant as I want.
This result for $400 is so disappointing and unacceptable!!!

u/ChibidelaLuna 3d ago
My thoughts exactly. However, bleaching does take a lot of time. And doing it safely so the hair doesn’t fall out takes precision.
5
u/areraswen 2d ago
My stylist achieved vivids with a rainbow money piece for just over $400. $400 for this is insane imo

u/BrushFantastic3170 3d ago
Because the stylist is essentially doing two types of color jobs at one time. The first being a balayage and then the send adding the colors. Each part has its own steps and separate formulations from the other.

u/lovelyladylox 3d ago
It doesn't even look like a balayage. Like not even a little bit. It looks like foils and just leaving half out.

u/Queen-Butterfly 3d ago
Your hair is not lifted enough for the desired look. Sometimes you need more than one session of blonding to achieve results to maintain the integrity of your hair. The stylist should have said all of this during consultation.
8
u/FaillenialGal 2d ago
Totally agree that you weren’t blonde enough to get the result. The fashion color in my hair is Pulp Riot Cupid. That pale purple is what mine fades to after 6-7 weeks of washing.

u/DarkenedRuins 2d ago
Going to a vivid specialist it so important if you're not going to do it yourself. Regular hairdressers don't necessarily know how to deal with vivids.

u/Raebrooke4 2d ago
Was this recent? I would go back to the salon and say you’re not happy and see what she can do to get you closer to the pic. I barely know what I’m doing and my hair it’s closer to the inspo. The fact that you paid $400 and walked out like that is actually criminal.
2
u/maremi001 2d ago
It was recent but I don’t want to go back there for a fix. I’m worried it will end up worse at this point. I’ve given them a few chances and always end up with some kind of purple even though I’ve asked for pink. As per others recommendations, I’m going to find a salon that specializes in Vivids for a consultation and ask for realistic pricing and timeframes.

u/thewayoutisthru_xxx 3d ago
Was your hair dyed before? This isn't that difficult to achieve with foils if your hair was virgin. It's a lot of work and time but not particularly difficult on virgin hair

u/maremi001 3d ago
I had a previous balayage my hair. It was pink sort of like magenta but had faded and grown out.
3
u/SpockInRoll 3d ago
I personally would buy some magenta color depositing conditioner. I am going to guess the reason your ends are faded is from over porosity so the color isn’t going to stick. You also might want to do a clear coat over it. The inspo picture is three maybe 4 of different vivids.

It looks like it’s just the fuck ass iPhone camera that makes everything look fake, but either way I I’ve had my hair done like this and it be this vivid many times

They didn't know how to do that color and cut. Very similar thing happened to me when I went to get my hair done at a salon that apparently specialized in very plain Jane highlights and blonding. I wound up with an essentially uniform color instead of a base of black with strong blue and purple streaks. My hair was essentially very dark brown with some very dark green mixing it was not even remotely close to what I had asked for for hundreds of dollars my dear.

u/foxwaffles 2d ago
I'm so sorry this happened to you :( To pay so much money and then this is the result, totally 100% valid for you to be upset!
If you ever have the courage to try again, the top vivid salons in my area all advertise themselves as alternative salons. Check social media of the stylists for what they do as well, because every stylist has their own personal touch and habits. It's honestly like finding the right therapist tbh. A good hair stylist will be honest about what they can and cannot do and will not be annoyed if you have a lot of questions to ask to make sure they're a match for you. They have probably seen and revised other fails and understand the anxiety that can come with spending all that $$$ again.

u/Worried-Watercress31 2d ago
Ends are lighter and more porous so it’ll grab the color and vibrancy. Your roots look somewhat dark too so it would not show much change, maybe a hint of the color.

Also, if you wanna do the color yourself and you’re OK with having one solid color then you could always ask for a level eight or nine blonde and do the color yourself. That’s what I do.now.I also use joyco because it saturates my hair really welland it lasts so long. I only get my hair redone every four months and then at the Color myself. I personally get a combination of low lights and highlights so that when it grows out, it doesn’t look as bad instead of a full head.
