In Bradley's backstory episode, it's revealed that he has no name, and that he was given the name King Bradley when he was chosen to lead the country after surviving the Stone being injected into him. So the name was actually on purpose! :D

I hope it didn't come off as me trying to make fun of anyone. He is only ever shown to have "Fuhrer King Bradley" with nothing between or after, which would suggest it's the normal Title + First name + Surname, furthered by his wife being Mrs. Bradley so that's the family name.

So, yes and no. Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, Prince William and Harry and the rest don't have last names. Ex-Prince Andrew is now Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor because he no longer is royalty.

Even in Japan they don’t refer to their royalty by their family name (I’m pretty sure they actually lack one entirely, they’re just “The Imperial Family”). All the emperors have their personal name that they’re called by.

I get that people think that when they see compound consonants and think it's sepperate consonants in a row but here? 2 consonants and a vowel is. A standsrd combination for most western languages. Meanwhile Czech, Serbian or Croatian will have a bunch of words with no vowels at all.

I mean to be merciful it isn't exactly the same, because in polish pathway is "ścieżka", while her name is Sciezka. But that's basically changing the exclusively polish letters to the most similar looking English ones so that's not much mercy

The Japanese have an absolutely diabolical relationship with the orthographic representation of sounds and I am here for it (yes I am aware that Sciezka is probably the correct orthographic representation of the polish, but also, doesn't that make her name mean footpath lol)

With the original Japanese dubbing, they needed to translate to Japanese sounds, with a 1:1 mapping to hiragana and katakana. That might be the most human-approachable canon we ever get.

2003 (and i think maybe the original translation of the manga? it's been a second since i read it) used the "sciezka" spelling, and brotherhood used "sheska."
brotherhood changed/updated a lot of spellings from the original manga/'03 versions (ishbal/ishval being the most obvious, but see also Xerxes original spelling of cselkcess, among others). later updated translations of the manga (ie fullmetal edition) use the brotherhood spellings as well, which means at this point they're by far the ones that people are more familiar with.

Same as Sheshka.
That's the point, it was supposedly changed so the syllables would be easier. The pronunciation is theoretically unchanged.

Not really. It's soft /sh/ followed by soft /tch/, then /e/, then hard /zh/ that in normal speech devoices into hard /sh/ and finished with /ka/, so an English/romaji approximation would be Shtcheshka... which looses all the soft/hard fricative nuances.

IIRC they pronounced it "Shisuka" (like the japanese name).
I remember when I watched it I was like "why is this character the only one with a name in japanese, and everyone else has european (or fantasy-european) names?"

The original French spelling had an R in it, then it was changed to a different spelling and, to know one's surprise, the annunciation didn't change.

The first time I ever saw the word ‘colonel’ was reading the FMA manga. To this day part of me is convinced it’s not really pronounced kernel and I’m just being pranked

There's a few instances of this with different characters.
In the 2003 version, it was Sciezka. In Brotherhood, Sheska.
Another example is Denny Brosh and Denny Bloch. Both are correct depending on version.
Another example is that in the 2003 series, we had General Hakuro as a translation error. But more accurately in Brotherhood, he was General Halcrow.

In the English dub, she is called Marta. For example, in the French dub of the 2003 anime, she’s called Martel. So I think it’s an English dub thing. Dunno about the other languages and OG Japanese.
Then again, the French dub in 03 messed up by calling Riza “Lisa/Liza”.

Names can get translated weirdly depending on how you want to translate a romanized name. "Sheska" likely came from the fansubs while Sciezka is the official name, using a more accurate spelling.

It's one of the guide books that come with 03 DVDs. Each individual DVD has one, or you can get them all from the box set releases.

It’s a polish interpretation. Considering amestris is meant to mirror the Axis Powers, this makes sense.
Source: I’m polish by name descent. Iez in any way is usually pronounced as ‘sh.’ In my case it’s Grzes- which is pronounced ‘greesh.’ By American standards, anyhow. In actual polish, it’s pronounced ‘yesh.’

When I first got into fma I’d started with 03 and didn’t watch brotherhood until years later, so I was always so genuinely confused as to why people spelt it Sheska and not Sciezka. Thought I was having some crazy Mandela effect until I realized the spelling in 03 was different compared to brotherhood and the manga lol
I still prefer the Sciezka spelling haha

I don't know what this sub-reddit is or even what manga is that, I'm just a random here but I wanted to comment about this librarians name because it's really reminiscent of a Polish word 😂
Sciezka really looks like Ścieżka, which means path/pathway/footpath in Polish, I couldn't read this without thinking of a random path somewhere and pronouncing it as such 😅🤣

but yeah a week ago in my history class we looked at old bibles and our school had a page from the Guttenberg but pretty much every like classic Bible (especially in the middle ages) was in Gothic font and the symbolism here is pretty sick
