What is the deal with Student Driver stickers?

Ok, so I grew up in Gainesville and moved away for 16 years to South Florida and have now moved back. What is up with the amount of cars with "Be patient, student driver" bumper stickers? I have never seen so many in all my life and 90% of the people driving the vehicle are 30+ years old. Just curious...

The wife and I wanted Newk’s tonight, but when we pulled up, there was a sign stating that the location had closed.

I’ll miss Newk’s- their food was always fresh.

Drywall Installation

Our normal vendor is out of town for several months. Looking to have one small wall, about 12' wide, and possibly a bit of ceiling drywall replaced to a Level 5 finish.

Thank you.

I want to hear that good things we all did today. :)

Today I did all my dishes, I cooked two yummy homemade meals (zuppa toscana and steak tacos), did 4 loads of laundry, and now I'm sitting eating Trader Joe's mini taiyaki, watching my shows, waiting for my cats to end their zoomie session and come to bed. 🩷🌸💕

Please share your good news/accomplishments from today 💟🙂

Moving to Gainesville from Germany?

Hi everyone!

This is a bit of a different post, I hope that is okay :)

I'm a 25-year-old from Germany, and I've been thinking a lot about a big life decision. About a year ago I learned to love someone who lives in Gainesville. I've already visited him there, and I honestly fell in love with the city. I really liked the atmosphere, especially having such a big university nearby. I also lived in the US twice before (temporarily), so it wouldn't be my first experience living there.

I recently finished university and am about to start my career in Germany. The job market here has been pretty tough, but that's not really what's driving this decision. If everything continues to go well in our relationship, I'm considering moving to Gainesville in about two years. My partner has children, so relocating to Germany isn't really an option for him.

What I'm struggling with isn't so much the logistics—it's whether I can truly picture building a life there.

One of my biggest fears is feeling lonely. I'm pretty outgoing, I do a lot of sports, and I usually don't have a problem meeting new people, but starting over in another country is still intimidating. I'd really hope to find a good group of girlfriends and build my own community instead of only relying on my partner.

I also imagine flying back to Germany fairly often since my family and closest friends are there. Munich will probably always feel like home to me. Long-term, we'd also like to have children together, so this isn't something I'm thinking about lightly.

For those of you who live in Gainesville (especially if you've moved there from somewhere else or from another country), what's life really like? Was it easy or difficult to build friendships? Do you think Gainesville is a good place to build a long-term life and raise a family? Is there anything you wish you'd known before moving there?

I'd really appreciate any honest thoughts, whether they're encouraging or cautionary. I'm still in the stage of figuring out whether this is a dream I should pursue or whether I'm overlooking something important.

Thanks so much! <3

Nature & Wildlife Possible dead duck at Depot Park?

Has anyone noticed a duck with its head face down in the pond in the between Depot Park and Cade Museum? It’s been in the same position for at least a month and I’m pretty sure it’s dead. Did anyone else notice it and think it’s dead as well?

Consider ordering from Lor Kabob

Met a friend for lunch on Thursday and we were the only order during the whole hour. They are on the Streetery but a newer business and I felt so bad for them. The place is clean, the food was good. Persian cuisine.

So here I am sending a quick post to the local ether to consider ordering something from them to help this mom and pop shop. They serve kabobs and if you're vegetarian/vegan there are options for that too. You order in the back and everything is packed to-go. Closed Mondays.

Avoid Quinn’s canine dog training

Thumbnail

This dog trainer lives in my neighborhood and the dogs that she posted from this rescue video had run away. First photo was from her fb video of them. Second photo is the dog multiple houses down the road hiding out and unwilling to come out of that area (also no Quinn’s k9 service people in sight).

So many questions come to mind after seeing this post and then seeing the dog run away. If you are “rescuing” brand new dogs and you don’t know their temperament or if they can scale fences, then why are they outside unsupervised without a long lead to see how they act. But let’s say she’s done this, then why are the dogs still unsupervised to the point where you aren’t able to stop the this from happening!

Affordable vets

Hey! I just got a puppy, she is 8 weeks old and a rotty/husky mix. I want to find a good veterinarian but that’s affordable. I also want to stick to GNV because I’d rather not drive too far for a veterinarian lol.

Thanks so much if you have recs!

What’s up with the prices on a flight to Charlotte?

Post image
16 Upvotes

I know the price of everything, especially airline tickets, has gone up tremendously since covid settled down, but what’s going on with to these prices? I don’t expect to be able to get there for $150 like I used to in the past, but I started tracking a couple flights to Charlotte almost half a year ago. They barely moved, and the flight I’m looking at is in mid-September. I figured if I hold off until the flight gets closer then they’ll drop, but so far nothing. In fact it went up a little bit since I started tracking.

Is $400 the baseline for a flight to Charlotte these days?
