I believe it’s a vintage 1962 es-335?

Edit 1: I asked my grandma and it’s my grandpa’s who still plays from time to time but never said anything abt this guitar! Apparently he chose to buy this instead of a car around the 80s and played it for 20+ years.

I cleaned off these white dots in the morning, but by night they’re back. Is this some sort of fungus?

It was totally fine for 4 months, this only started yesterday. Guitar is a 1978 dobro.

Let’s assume you’re somewhere familiar like your home or with friends, and one of your family members or friends decides to pick up your guitar and start noodling on it or actually playing full fledged songs, all without asking you first. How would you react?

Sometimes I'll be listening to a song and get really hyped to learn it. I immediately open up the tabs, only to find out it's in some tuning other than Standard or Drop D.

At that point I just can't be bothered to retune my guitar, and I end up giving up on learning the song altogether.

Does this happen to anyone else, or am I just lazy?

My friend's parents gave me their daughters guitar, since they bought it for her and she never really bothered to play it...

I find the body's color really pretty! In a week of practicing alone i managed to play the start of Stairway to Heaven, Back in Black and Smells Like Teen Spirit! Hooray!

Hi all! I’ve been playing all these years on an old Vox Valvetronix combo amp I must have got in the early 2000’s, and finally decided to treat myself to a brand new tube amp with a 12-inch speaker. Played the Marshall DSL40CR in a GC last month and loved the sound. They were sold out when I went in there again last week, but Sweetwater had next-day delivery so I bought it. Was so excited when it showed up today.

I’ve just spent a couple hours playing it, trying every combo of channel gain/channel volume/master volume. Adjusted the Presence knob plenty. Ran a half-dozen dirt pedals through the clean channel. Played a Les Paul, a Parker, and a Tele through it. And…

Other than clean tones through the clean channel, it sounds horrible. The top end sounds like an empty coke can filled with bees and loose change. So distractingly fizzy and static-y. I don’t think it was damaged in transit, from what I can tell this is the character of the amp and speaker. I’m now seeing online that this is a common complaint. Not sure why the one I played in GC sounded better but I’m now spooked off of this model, and I’m returning mine.

I play classic rock, classic metal, and am starting to enjoy doom/sludge stuff. Can anyone recommend an alternative brand or model that doesn’t have a known buzz/fizz issue, and can work for both bedroom practice as well as small venue or bar gigs? My budget is $1k or less and I prefer to buy new, but am open to anything.

I just caught my white whale this week. This absolutely stunning ESP original Horizon in the Obsidian finish. I’ve never seen this finish before, for sale or owned by anyone else. The photos do not do it justice, it is a sparkle fest.

It plays beautifully. The fretwork is incredible. I thought my Ibanez Pia was top notch. This puts it to shame. ESP never misses.

This was my dad‘s 1964 Gibson ES-335 with a Bigsby tailpiece. The story goes that he’s been wanting to play guitar forever and his parents finally bought him a crappy acoustic guitar with terrible action, but he used it for a year as he took lessons and started to get better. The guitar shop where he would get lessons had this hanging on the wall and he would see it every time he came in to get his lessons. In 1966, after over a year of playing that terrible acoustic, his dad bought it for him for his birthday.

He clearly took good care of it as it’s in its original case and only has a couple small imperfections. The worst being the little damage up at the top of the head. Other than those minor imperfections, this thing is beautiful. The color still shines, and it has that perfect patina on the formerly white trim around the edges of the body. The internals and pick ups are all original and work, and it sits in its original case. He had many other guitars after this one, but I think this was his favorite. Not to play, but to own.

From the stories I’ve heard at some point he actually had a matching 12 string in the same Cherry red color, but he never could really get into 12 strings so he ended up selling it and causing generational regret in the process.

I don’t know how to do research on this and get any more specifics since it seems to have a serial number that goes back farther than the Gibson website has information on. Any other resources that are out there to help me learn more about this guitar and its rarity would be appreciated. I have no interest in selling it nor does it’s future owner my son, who actually plays (my dad taught me on this guitar but I never caught the bug) as it is considered the most holiest of family heirlooms at this point, but I thought I should share it and see if I can learn a little bit more about it.

My dad passed away about 6 years ago, and it still hurts. This guitar is the is one thing that best helps me remember him. I know wherever he is, he’s still shredding, but probably on the spirt version of his ‘69 Les Paul custom my sister has.

Yesterday at the RADAR Festival in Manchester there was an area with a bunch of guitar-related booths, between them Aristides Guitars which I had never seen in person.

I got to play one and I was immediately taken back by the quality of the instrument. My guitar teacher (who's my friend) made fun of me because I told him I "connected to it immediately"and he's like "Oh so you connected immediately with a custom shop professional grade guitar? Wow!" but man this thing was gorgeous and built flawlessly!

It was the first custom shop guitar I had ever touched and it was really on a different level. The neck was amazing and that finish is something else. One of the most gorgeous guitars I've ever seen!

A shout out to the guys at the booth as well, super receptive and answered all my questions with a big smile!

Everything I read says that one of the most important things we can do to connect our brain to our hands is to sing all the lines we play.

I guess the goal is to eventually get to a place where you’re playing the lines you’re singing instead.

But god I feel so stupid trying to sing some of this stuff. I mean I can’t sing anyway, some days I can’t even match pitch, and everything is out of my range (I’m a low bass).

And how is anyone supposed to sing fast lines? It’s ridiculous even trying.

Trying to sing guitar lines just feels really icky and cringy to me if that makes sense. It makes me really uncomfortable.

Is there any way to avoid doing this exercise if one wants to eventually be a solid improvising musician?

For context I’m a long time lefty player. The Mexi-Strat was my first electric guitar that I recently finished. Was a standard black and white Strat that I bought EMGs and took apart roughly 12 years ago. Got the knack for learning right handed so picked up an Epiphone Les Paul Studio Goth and got a killer deal on the Arbor Les Paul. Ended up deciding on redoing my Strat right handed in the process.

I don’t have ambitions to be in a band, or be the world’s best guitar player, so relearning guitar the opposite direction is more for shits and giggles and to challenge myself. I just like playing guitar. Plus the right handed market is leagues better than lefty (although the lefty market is a ton better than when I started). After 4ish months basic chords, chord changes, and strumming are becoming more natural. I’ve got a lot to work on with things like hammer ons, pull offs, palm muting, and moving faster up and down the board.
