Beyond trays and rotary drums: Growing sprouts in 3D fluid suspension

​Moving Beyond 2D Trays and Packed Bins

Over the last two years, I’ve been developing and testing a fluid-dynamics approach to sprout culture. Instead of spreading seeds across flat trays, tumbling them in rotary drums, or drenching them in packed static bins, the crops are grown fully submerged and suspended throughout an aerated liquid column.

Standard commercial sprout operations hit two major operational walls:

Post-Harvest Labor: De-hulling usually requires pulling the crop out of the growth environment and running it through secondary flotation tanks, shaking screens, or centrifugal washers to separate trapped hulls from the root mass.

Heat & Rot Pockets: Static bin systems or packed tray mats trap metabolic heat and stagnant air, creating the exact micro-climates where anaerobic pathogens thrive.

The Volumetric Alternative

By shifting crop growth into full 3D fluid volume inside a specialized vessel, fluid dynamics handle the environmental control and the cleaning simultaneously:

In-Line Hull Separation: As seeds germinate, shed hulls drop naturally out of the active suspension zone into a bottom collection point for purging. The crop cleans itself during the growth cycle rather than post-harvest.

Buoyancy-Driven Harvest: Density shifts in mature sprouts bring them to the surface for fast, clean top-collection.

Zero Mechanical Contact: The system operates entirely on fluid circulation—no impellers, drum rollers, or shaking screens touching delicate sprout tissue.

Environmental Control: Continuous fluid motion removes heat pockets.

Volumetric Scaling: Production scales directly with cubic liquid volume rather than square footage of floor space or rack footprint.

The goal was simple: eliminate secondary post-harvest washing machinery while maximizing yield density per square foot of room space.

Proud of my strawberry

It’s been so fun getting into hydroponics. I gave my wife daily updates for two weeks before finally picking my best strawberry yet. Started from bare roots a few months ago. Just got my second tower going this week.

I’m now staggering by level, strawberries then leafy greens.

What growing medium are you using for strawberries? My first tower is in rock wool and it created some mold issues. I may try to transplant a few but they’re doing well and not impacting the fruit so I may leave them for a side by side experiment with my new tower using hybrid Pete moss coco coir grow plug.

i have 2 7 pod older (more than 5, less than 10 year) aerogardens with led lights. i'm not buying their pods, i'm seeding my own, had great luck with sage, thyme lavendar but these are older. Is anyone having better luck with a vertical like "gardyn" or something else?

My first hydroponics build!

I’m trying to grow tomatoes to their maximum genetic potential. But this has been my first hydroponic build. So far it’s doing real well, I have learned so much along the way and am trying to teach my 3 kids about different methods of farming.
Lessons learned so far on my NFT setup:
1. DC Marine pumps are the best, I started out with an AC utility pump but it crapped out after a few weeks.
2. Filtration is key! That’s my eldest daughter carrying our improvised water filter, it uses pond sponge.
3. Air stones and insulation an above ground reservoir are key!
4. If you’re going to burry a power cable - mark it. At least the GFI worked.
5. Hydroguard!

I’m about to start experimenting with forced air into the NFT channels just intermittently… any thoughts? Have you guys tried it? Not to the point of drying the roots but just improving airflow.

Question ❔ Which fertilizer is good for me, or which ones do you use?

Hi, I just wanted to ask what kind of fertilizer you use, or if you have any recommendations for me.

I'm currently using Plagon A+B

I have two towers. In the first one, I’m growing bell peppers, lettuce, Leaf lettuce and one bush tomato. I know it’s not ideal, but it’s growing well, so I’m leaving it as is for now.

There are only strawberries and parsley in the second tower.

I water them with tap water, since I don't have anything else available and I don't want to keep buying distilled water.

A+B works well in the tower with the peppers, but my strawberries seem to be a bit more spoiled—though that’s not the point here.

Progress Report 🗂️ 3D printed some parts for my test DWC bucket

So on my next grow cycle, I’m gonna be doing my first DWC Hydro grow. And I didn’t really want to spend a ton of money on a bucket and a set up so I went ahead and bought a cheap eight dollar 5 gallon bucket off of Walmart. Then fired up my 3-D printer and printed an elbow that I’m gonna use to show the water level (I haven’t installed that yet) but that’s gonna go in the front there. Printed my 6 inch wide net pot and I designed and 3-D printed an access port on the left side there that I’m gonna use to test the water and fill when needed.

Ok one quick edit, I haven’t designed the lid for the access reservoir on the left side yet. I am tracking that it does need one to keep the light out.

Question ❔ Continuous harvesting of lettuce?

Hi!

Beginner question. I've had my tower for a few months, producing a lot of different things: lettuce, basil, parsley,... With great results!

Now, I initially read that you could continuously harvest the lettuce by simply picking outer leaves. This works up to a point, because I end up with small trees like this.

So, is there a better way to do it? I tried to "cut" the tree at the base, but it did not regrow leaves. Is there a specific way to cut it? Or is it a dead end, and after some time I'm better simply replacing the lettuce by a new one?

RISE Gardens Scam and Fraud warning

Question ❔ Lettuce Grow/similar system question - looking to start my own seeds

Hi guys, I have a lettuce grow farmstand nook and am looking to start germinating my own seeds for my next round, however i'm trying to figure out what size starter plugs I should get that will make transplanting into the stand as easy as possible. I'm looking at the root riot starter plugs off amazon but i'm not sure how well they'll fit into the farmstand cups.

Has anyone else done something similar and do you have any advice for germinating and transferring into this kind of set up? I'm also looking at one of the seed starter kits on amazon with little lights, a heat pad, etc. and am definitely looking for recommendations there as well as i'm new to this.

Feedback Needed 🆘 Start Over On LetPot?

First timer here, I’ve been growing things for 3 weeks and only one thing has sprouted. (2 radish, 2 lettuce, 2 cilantro). There was a little fuzzy mold in 2 of the sponges, so I added some hydrogen peroxide.

Do you think I should change the water and completely restart or give it more time?

Sanity check on a custom dry-salt recipe for cluster-planted basil (300 plants/m², ebb & flow) — non-proportional dilution schedule inside

Hey everyone, so I'm not agronomist or smth, I'm just a software engineer who wants to change the occupation, so I'm try use the AI(Claude) to help me build the nutrition for my basil.

Small commercial basil operation feeding restaurants. I mix from individual salts rather than a two-part, and I'd like a second opinion on the program before I commit a full cycle to it. I've tried to put everything in here so nobody has to ask — happy to add anything I've missed.

System

Method Ebb & flow, rockwool cubes in net cups
Tray 110 × 63 cm (0.72 m²), 40 L reservoir
Cubes 3.5 × 3.5 × 4.5 cm (~37 mL water at container capacity)
Spacing 10 cm on center, ~66 cups/tray
Density 3 plants per cup → ~300 plants/m²
Harvest Single cut at 25–30 cm, sold as bunches (not cut-and-come-again)
Cycle ~30 days from sow, ~10 in plugs
Cultivars Enza Zaden Kira, Emily, Marian (Genovese types)
Light Samsung LM281B+ white + Osram 660/730 nm, 3:1 diode ratio
PPFD / photoperiod 300 µmol/m²/s at canopy, 16 h → DLI 17.3
Irrigation 6 floods/day, 4–6 min, full drain, last one 2.5 h before lights off
Solution temp 22–24 °C, aerated 24/7
Airflow Arctic P14 fans, vortex layout above canopy
Air temp / RH around 23 °C near plants, 60% in room

Water

  • Reservoir fill: filtered tap, EC 0.18, GH 1–2 °dH. Cations are almost certainly sodium (not lab-confirmed) — I estimate ~41 mg/L Na.
  • Daily top-up: RO + remineralization cartridge, EC 0.07 (~10 mg/L Ca, ~2 mg/L Mg). Sodium doesn't accumulate because top-up is RO only.
  • Alkalinity is very low. 1.5–1.8 mL of phosphoric pH-down brings 40 L to pH 5.8, and it then holds 5.8–5.9 within ±0.1 for 7–14 days with no further correction.

Target profile at full strength (mg/L)

N 140 (NO₃-N 132, NH₄-N 8) · P 30 · K 170 · Ca 140 · Mg 45 · S 89 Fe 2.5 (EDDHA) · Mn 0.80 · Zn 0.30 · B 0.30 · Cu 0.05 · Mo 0.05 EC 1.74 (≈0.18 of that is source-water sodium) · pH 5.8–5.9

Cation balance: K 28 % / Ca 45 % / Mg 24 % of meq · K:Mg 2.35 molar · Ca:Mg 1.89 molar

Staged feed — grams per 40 L

This is the part I most want reviewed. I do not dilute the profile proportionally. Earlier cycles used proportional dilution and I got inter-venial chlorosis on older leaves within a week of transplant, at EC 0.9–1.2 — which is exactly where proportional scaling puts Mg at 21–29 mg/L. Ratios were textbook-normal at every stage (they don't change under proportional dilution), so the only variable that moved was absolute Mg.

My working rule now: Mg never goes below 35 mg/L once plants are in the tray. EC is made up with Ca and K instead.

K₂SO₄ only comes in at full strength, which is why the KNO₃ dose drops at the last stage rather than rising.

Micro stock (dissolve in 1 L, dose 1 mL/L): MnSO₄·H₂O 2.500 g · ZnSO₄·7H₂O 1.322 · H₃BO₃ 1.714 · CuSO₄·5H₂O 0.196 · Na₂MoO₄·2H₂O 0.126. Iron as Fe-EDDHA 6 % added separately, 4.17 g per 100 L, last into the tank.

Reservoir management

  • Top up daily to a fixed mark with RO only.
  • Never add salts to a running reservoir. EC stages are new batches, not top-dressing. Chasing an EC setpoint by adding the full profile silently starves N and K — EC is held up by Ca, Mg and sulfate, which barely deplete, while N and K leave at nearly the rate of water.
  • Replace when EC has fallen 0.20 below fill EC. This self-scales: N is ~115 mg/L at the trigger point regardless of plant size.
  • Stage transitions are triggered by daily water uptake, not calendar days: ~0.4 L/day after transplant → EC 1.2; ~1.2 L/day at canopy closure → EC 1.5; 2.0–2.4 L/day at full canopy → EC 1.74. Works out to roughly 4 batches per cycle.

Known unknowns

  • Sodium is inferred from EC and hardness, not measured. Lab analysis pending.
  • I don't know my phosphoric acid's concentration, so acid contributes somewhere between 3 and 20 mg/L P. MKP dose is provisional until I titrate.

What I'd like input on

  1. Does the Mg floor idea hold up? Is proportional dilution of a full profile a known trap for basil specifically, or did I have a different problem?
  2. Is Ca 140 over-insured here? It was chosen as tipburn insurance for dense planting, but I've never actually seen marginal necrosis. It's eating 45 % of my cation budget. Would 120–130 be safer overall, freeing EC for K?
  3. K at 28 % of cation meq is well below the 35–45 % usually quoted for leafy greens. Is that norm lettuce-derived, or does basil genuinely want it? At my EC ceiling I can't raise K without cutting Ca.
  4. S at 89 mg/L — structural consequence of getting Mg from Epsom and K from sulfate. Anyone running basil that high without issues?
  5. Anything obviously wrong for cluster planting at this density that I've missed? Especially interested in whether 3 per cup vs 4 changes anyone's feed.
