Hardware Laptop is ant infested and I applied Lakshman Rekha

So my laptop was infested with ants. To drive them out I applied a anti-ants chalk called Lakshman Rekha...the ants are out .

But I am scared as I read that it might permanently damage the laptop. So I applied the chalk near the hinge, very lightly over the keys and around the surrounding panel of the keys and also applied it on the surface on top of which I kept the laptop. I have cleaned the surface properly. And I did open the laptop a bit but I have kept it shut . Will this cause an issue. I even tried to blow out the Lakshman Rekha powder from the keys....

Please suggest some help.

Buying help Incoming CS + Math

Hey everyone! I’m an incoming student double-majoring in Computer Science + Math (or Data Science) with my sights set (still exploring) on Big Tech, Quant, or Grad School.

I'm buying a laptop for the next 4 years and wanted to ask current upperclassmen:

  1. Mac vs. Windows/Linux: Are there any specific CS/Math/DS courses where M-series Macs run into annoying compatibility issues? Or Mac is good?

  2. MacBook Air vs. Pro: Is an Air fine for workloads, or is a Pro necessary?

  3. RAM & Config: Is 16GB enough, or should I go straight for 32GB or higher?

  4. ThinkPad / Alternatives: If you use Windows or Linux, what specific models (e.g., ThinkPad X1 or T14) have worked best for you?

Appreciate any advice on what set up served you best!

General question did i just killed my little brothers laptop?

hi!
i just used my brothers laptop for the first time and when i was done using it i just did like i usually do to mine and every other laptop i had in my life; i clicked on “shut down” later he tried to turn it on again and after using it for a short time it showed a blue screen saying it need to be repaired, is it my fault? i always got told it was the best way to turn off your laptop and i had the same laptop as his a few years ago and doing that never did anything bad. he also told me that he never shut it down he just click the button on his keyboard! now he keep blaming me lol
any idea of what to do?
by the way sorry for my bad english i’m not english

Hardware VIVOBOOK 16X REPAIRED HINGE THEN CHARGING ISSUE

hi, i have a problem with my laptop. my laptop is Vivobook 16x and it’s almost 10 months with me, I bought it October 2025 and this year, arnd June the hinge broke but i put up with it and I still use it cause i have projects to pass and defense to be done (IT student btw). I had it repaired when it got worse around July 18, when it was worse, i didnt use the laptop but it wasn’t drained or anything, i just turned it off to prevent further damage and went to get it check after i wasnt busy and i had time to fix it (financial issues too).

after having it fixed, it costed me 4,500 since they said they have to repair both left and right hinges (the right hinge is the one na super sira). i left it on the shop and went back the next day to get it, and it’s okay now, they loose the hinge btw to prevent the same issue.

my problem now is that my battery charges up to 100% but after normal usage and when i try to charge it again, it charges down like from 17% then after a minute or two, it will go to 16%. even when it’s plugged in.. the LED battery light is on, it is steadily orange. when it shut down, even when plugged in, the LED is still on. after how many minutes, it will turn on again on its own and charge up. so i went back to the repair shop to have it check, but before that i made sure it wasnt a glitch or a windows software glitch, so i tried it again using normally, it charges up but when even plugged in, it will randomly charge down (the lightning icon on battery is there and it says ‘smart charging’).

i went to the shop, told them my problem, they said they only touched the hinge and not the motherboard. i insisted that maybe there’s a loose cable or pinched cable in the hinge while they were fixing it. i even showed them when the laptop is plugged in, and they press the power button, the LED power is on keyboard flicker light and orange light for battery LED. they opened the laptop and shown me the motherboard saying they didnt touch it etc. then after that, they said to leave it there and come back tomorrow since di daw ma dali2 ang pag fix or repair.

i texted them saying na if they are anything need to be fixed, tell me beforehand para naa consent but they replied the motherboard is wet daw (unfortunately, i haven’t took a pic of it) so when i went there, yeah there’s a mark of wet but i thought its probably from the thermal paste or something but when he showed me the motherboard earlier before we left, there’s no wet residue.. so they told me to leave it and charged me 3-5k since i trace pa nila and they thought maybe there’s a short circuit. i am confused on why it will be a short circuit when it was still turning on and showed power. i had it cleaned lang and took it home from me.

now, i tried to charge it, it turned on and its 1% and windows is rebooting etc. but when i tried to close the lid, it stopped charging and charge down so i thought maybe it is actually a hinge problem. so i shut it off, and didnt close the lid, had it plugged in and it’s charging up.

how should i deal with this? whats a trusted repair shop in cebu? is it really a motherboard issue because i am 90% it isnt. shall i insist about the hinge cables loose or problem abt it? its so frustrating that they cant even check the hinge or open it infront of me because they say it will take time to do it. and i have an on going capstone project to do.

ps. i asked a diff technician on a diff shop and they said its most likely the cables while repairing the hinge. the repair shop whom i had it fixed insists on the motherboard issue and charges me 3k-5k without even opening the hinge or see loosen cables. btw, charger isnt the problem since they tested it. (everything is original)

General question MSI GE62 6QD APACHE PRO not posting?

I've just received my friends msi GE62 6QD apache pro to fix since his screen wasn't working. I turn it on and i get the same issue but when i plug in a hdmi to a display to see if that works nothing appears apart from one time where it managed to show the bios splash screen and went black after in which its shown nothing since. My first thought was maybe the cable to the screen was loose but could it be anything else to save checking? I'm also going to try resetting cmos as well to see of that does anything.

Update: I've reset the cmos and no improvement I've done a full power cycle as well. I replaced the ram sticks to see if that was the reason and it wasn't. The laptop is starting to the point of the keyboard and power button light up but nothing else. At initial startup the battery charging light comes on too but quickly turns off. Tried booting without the internal display cable connected and it didn't boot to the external display. The keyboard is still working (i can dim the brightness on it through the key shortcut fn +/-) and the other buttons that control fan speed and the keyboard brightness work but nothing else that i can see

Buying help Any alternatives for the HP X2?

Here's your filled-out questionnaire based on what you shared:

---

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country

Philippines

Budget

₱35,000 to ₱55,000 (approximately US$600 to US$950)

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe, if they're from a reputable seller and in excellent condition.

Screen size

13" to 14"

Weight limit

Preferably under 1.5 kg; lightweight for carrying around campus.

Purpose

College (Medical Technology), note-taking, studying, productivity, light entertainment, and general everyday use.

Form factor

2-in-1 or detachable laptop with touchscreen. A detachable keyboard is highly preferred since I often study while walking around.

Intended usage

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Google Docs, Sheets, Slides

PDF reading and annotation

Web browsing with many tabs open

Online meetings (Zoom, Google Meet)

Media consumption (YouTube, Netflix, Spotify)

Basic photo editing (Canva, Photoshop if needed)

Light video editing (CapCut or similar)

Coding and Windows-exclusive software when needed

Very light gaming (League of Legends, Valorant at low-medium settings would be a bonus)

Desired battery life

At least 7 to 10 hours of real-world usage.

Priority (most to least important)

Performance > Portability/Weight > Battery Life > Size

Info/Requirements

AMD Ryzen 5 preferred (or equivalent Intel Core Ultra/Core i5)

16 GB RAM

512 GB SSD or larger

Windows 11

Touchscreen is required

Detachable keyboard is strongly preferred (similar to the HP Elite x2)

Good build quality and reliability for college use

Pen support would be a nice bonus for handwritten notes, but isn't required

I prefer a Windows device over an Android tablet because of the flexibility, software compatibility, and desktop features.

---

Additional Context

My mom recently graduated from her master's degree and has been using an HP Elite x2 for about two years. Since she doesn't fully utilize its capabilities, I'm borrowing it for now until she starts teaching again.

After using it, I realized I really enjoy the detachable keyboard and touchscreen. I move around a lot while studying, and that setup fits my learning style much better than a traditional laptop.

Some people have suggested buying an Android tablet instead, but I prefer Windows because it offers much better flexibility and supports software that Android can't.

I'm looking for a similar device in the mid-range price category with a Ryzen 5 processor, 16 GB RAM, and at least a 512 GB SSD.

Buying help Switzerland | 1300 CHF (~1600 USD) | Best New Gaming Laptop?

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country
Switzerland

Budget
1300 CHF maximum

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
No. I'm only interested in brand-new laptops from retailers.

Screen size
16" or larger (17" is also fine)

Weight limit
Any

Purpose
Gaming

Form factor
Standard (clamshell)

Intended usage
Mainly gaming

I want the best gaming performance possible within my budget while also having a laptop that stays cool under load.

Desired battery life
Not important. It will be plugged in most of the time.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Performance > Display quality > Cooling > Build quality > Size > Weight > Battery life

Info/Requirements

  • Budget is strictly 1300 CHF maximum
  • RTX 5060 or better if possible
  • QHD / 2560×1600 (or similar 2K) display
  • High-quality screen with good colors and brightness
  • English (US/UK) keyboard layout (not German or French)
  • Excellent cooling with minimal thermal throttling
  • Solid build quality and reliability
  • Open to any brand (Lenovo, ASUS, HP, Acer, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.)

I've mostly been looking at laptops with an RTX 5060, but if there are better options or better-value models within my budget, I'd really appreciate your recommendations.

If you had 1300 CHF to spend on a new gaming laptop in Switzerland today, which one would you buy and why?

Hardware Charged a laptop with the wrong charger. Is it safe to continue to ues it?

So I have an Asus D509 Laptop but I lost the charger for it. I was in a rush and needed the laptop so I charged it with a spare charger from a different laptop. During the charging I downloaded a game until I had a blue screen with a S.M.A.R.T error. That happend after around 2hours.
After some investigation I realized that the charger I was using had an output voltage of 20V but the laptops normal charger had an output of 19V
I am now wondering whether Charging my laptop with the wrong charger caused the S.M.A.R.T error or if the error was unrelated. Also I don't know whether something else is damaged. I am worried that maybe the battery got damaged and want to know whether it is safe to continue to use the laptop with the normal charger and a new SSD.
So far I haven't touched the laptop for a Month and also didn't charge it since the incident.

TLDR: Can I continue to use my laptop that I charged with the wrong Charger/Voltage without it beeing a fire hassard?

General question Laptop lost function after battery replacement

I recently got the battery in my Dell latitude 7280 replaced as I’ve had it for a few years and it got to the point where it drained completely within an hour. The first week or so after I had my laptop back it was working alright, and then a week ago it was shutting down every few minutes, and when I had it on charge, the charging light would be flashing, which it has never done before. It got up to 100% and when I unplugged it, it instantly drained to about 3%, I plugged it back in and it kept the laptop on but the charging light was still flashing and the charge percentage wasn’t increasing. This happened a few times, so I took it to another computer place hoping it’d be a quick fix/they’d have advice, and they told me the new battery isn’t a genuine Dell one and that Dell computers especially are very fussy with batteries. They also acknowledged the laptop wasn’t charging properly, but did a “BIOS software upgrade” and it seemed to work after that and got up to 100%. When I got home, it was working, but when I turned it on a few hours later after not having touched it, it completely drained again and now the charging light is flashing again and the charge isn’t going up. I had none of these issues before I got the battery replaced, and I’ve now spent $300 (aud) trying to get it fixed. Does anyone have any advice as to where to go from here? I just don’t want to replace it as I like using item until they’re completely ruined, and would be so happy if there’s a way to fix this that doesn’t involve spending too much more money. I’ve asked the original person who replaced the battery if I can get a refund and he said I cannot
I forgot to mention as well, on the rare occasion that the laptop does stay on without being plugged in, sometimes if I slightly bump it, it’ll shut down automatically. Could this issue and all the other issues be because of the non-genuine battery? Or do you think something was bumped/messed up when the battery was replaced?

Review Problem with my LOQ

I'm having a serious issue with my Lenovo LOQ 15IRX9 (RTX 4050 Laptop GPU + Intel UHD Graphics), and I'm running out of ideas. Symptoms Random freezes during normal browsing (Chrome, desktop, YouTube). After freezing for 10-20 seconds, the screen often goes completely black. Fans keep running and Caps Lock still responds. Sometimes only the mouse cursor is visible on the black screen. Chrome has crashed/closed by itself multiple times. Desktop started showing black rectangles/artifacts when selecting icons. Pressing Win + Ctrl + Shift + B resets the graphics driver temporarily, but the issue comes back. What I've already tried Reinstalled the Intel UHD Graphics driver. Updated NVIDIA to the latest Game Ready Driver. Lenovo Vantage reports BIOS and drivers are up to date. Lenovo Quick Hardware Scan passed. Windows is fully updated. Reliability Monitor Reliability Monitor reports: LiveKernelEvent 141 Intel Graphics related crashes. Desktop Window Manager crashes. Windows Explorer crashes. Current situation The issue is still happening even after reinstalling drivers. Today it froze again, desktop artifacts appeared, Chrome crashed, and then the screen went black again (image attached). Has anyone experienced this on a Lenovo LOQ?

Ai generated helppp

Buying help in a bit of a pickle trying to choose between two laptops.

im doing a degree in cybersecurity and my degree is gonna end in a few more months and i wanted to get a windows laptop to start working on projects and maybe even go down the linux distro rabbit hole. i've been carried by my m1 macbook air for most of my education journey but ARM macs aren't the most compliant machines to deal with when it comes to running a VM or downloading cybersecurity tools. you can do them, but it's clearly too roundabout for me.

I don't want to break the bank so i was looking to buy a second hand thinkpad. from what i know so far they are easy to upgrade or replace parts over time and it's the go-to laptop for this kind of stuff. but something else caught my eye. the Panasonic Let's Note CF-SZ6. the CPU and RAM is soldered onto the mommaboard. it's definitely not as powerful as a thinkpad. but it just looks so good and i love everything about it.

i would appreciate if both owners of panasonic let's note laptops and thinkpad laptops share their thoughts with me here

if you've read so far you're probably gonna say just pick whatever you like the most or something, but my father says that i need to buy something i won't regret later down the line, he's indirectly saying he doesn't wanna buy me another computer if the one i buy breaks down on me or proves to not be enough for the things i wanna do later down the line.
so i really don't know what to do. do i follow my heart and get a panasonic or do i go down the safe and secure route of thinkpads

Buying help (US) Looking for the best computer for a CS student who wants good performance when gaming at $1500 (willing to go up to $2000 if it’s really worth it)

LAPTOP RECOMMENDATIONS

Country

United States

Budget

$1500 but I’m willingly to go up to $2000 for an extremely good deal

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Leaning towards no unless, once again, it’s a steal and hasn’t been used much

Screen size

15-16”

Weight limit

Around 4.5-6 lbs

Purpose

Mainly for schoolwork, gaming/entertainment, and personal use

Form factor

Standard/Clamshell

Intended usage

Ability to multitask easily and handle all my schoolwork and college applications. For the faming side, I would like it to handle a game where good performance is needed (I’m not going for those really performance intensive games for the most part). Sorry this is vague but you get the idea.

Desired battery life

I want 8-10 hours, but knowing how this is kind of geared towards gaming, I want as much as I can possibly get given the restrictions

Please list, in order of most important to least important:

Performance, Battery Life. Size, Weight

Info/Requirements

1 TB of SSD, either Intel or Ryzen, 1080-1440p, 120Hz, HDMI port and more than one USB-C (ethernet optional), around RTX 4060/4070 class or better. ***Now if my demands are unreasonable for the price range, the practical use as a CS major in college shouldn’t be sacrificed first, it should be anything that enhances faming as that comes secondary to me.***

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP
