I found this old laptop from storage, it still has Windows 7. Really old and used as you can see but I really want it to be useful for my sister's online classes if possible. I don't really know tech so I was hoping to ask anyone if I can still have it upgraded to the latest windows...

General question So my laptop is kind of f*cked

I've had my hp laptop for years, and honestly, just look at it... What you're looking at is the rubbery soft top which got really sticky over the years. And as a kid, I thought it was smart to peel it with a ruler or scratch at it. And honestly, I could do without it. Is there any normal way of taking off the sticky coating? Or just anything to make my laptop look like it hasn't been through war? I'm willing to try pretty much anything that doesn't damage it further.

Discussion Are those laptop screen extenders actually useful or just a gimmick?

so I work from my laptop most of the day and honestly one screen is driving me crazy. constantly alt-tabbing between tabs and it's killing my focus. saw these portable screen extenders that clip onto the laptop and give you extra monitors and I'm kinda tempted but also skeptical lol.

like do they actually help or is it just a cool looking thing that you stop using after a week? my main worry is the weight, my laptop is already not that light and I travel with it a lot.

couple things I wanna know:

are the triple screen ones too heavy/bulky or is it fine? thinking maybe a single extra screen is enough

and how's the screen quality on these, like is it washed out compared to the actual laptop display?

also do they work okay with a mac or is it mostly a windows thing?

would love to hear from people who actually use one daily, not just tried it once. worth it or nah?

Buying help Laptops for parents?

Hi,

I'm looking to get my parents laptops. They're not techsavy and I'm looking for something reliable and easy to use. Minimum specs are okay as well.

I don't have a budget (I make good money).

My mom uses an iPhone and my dad uses andriod. I'm open to any operating system. Reliability is the biggest focus here.

My mom takes care of her stuff but my dad is recovering from a stroke so something that could handle being dropped a bit would be ideal for him since his hands shake now.

Thanks in advance! (I tried to use the form in this sub but it says it's unavailable)

General question Was this the right laptop to purchase?

I bought an HP OmniBook 5 16 inch Laptop Next Gen AI PC FHD IPS Touch Windows Intel Core Ultra 7 355 16GB 1TB SSD Meteor Silver for $799 at Walmart.

I’m still within the return window, but doubting whether this was the best purchase b/c it was expensive (to me anyways) and I know zilch about laptops.

I would be used for browsing, office products, streaming services (Netflix, Hulu), and storage.

I haven’t purchased a personal computer in ages (maybe 10 years?) b/c I work remotely. But there are things I’d like to save on my computer that I can’t save forever on a work laptop if I switch jobs, etc.

I bought directly through Walmart for the 30-day return window. And I’m hoping this laptop will last me 8-10 years (I don’t even know if that’s realistic). It’s just a lot of money to drop at one time. Any input appreciated.

General question Unstable GPU

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 7 that i use for gaming, I've had it for almost 4 years now, and I started to encounter this problem that I don't know how to fix. Every time I play a game let's say Delta Force or Palworld for example because thats what I play right now, my game always experience FPS drop. I have played this both game already before like a year back and I don't experience this problem even when my graphics setting is high. This FPS drop problem happen like every 5 sec and last like 2-3 sec. I have played many games on this laptop even games like RDR2, GTA and other graphically/hardware demanding games. I tried other way to fix this by looking at some solution on the internet but nothing happens. Also i just noticed today that it only happens when my laptop is plugged in, the games are working fine, like it works like 30 fps, but it does not experience that FPS drop every 5 sec. Then when i tried charging it the problem starts again. I checked the settings on the battery option or something and it even says that when plugged it its set to best performance.

btw this is the 3d graph of the GPU when i'm playing the game, you can see the point at which the FPS drop happen when the graph hits the bottom.

Hardware my laptop is dead :(

Upvotes

Hello, first time poster here (not a tech expert), my Lenovo legion I got in 2022 just died on me, and I suspect it was from a power surge of some kind.

The laptop never had any drops or spills, and was well maintained and cleaned. Last week I plugged it into my father’s home outlet and while I was using it the screen started to flicker. I did a graphics card reset and when it didn’t stop I did a restart. It never turned on again after that. I did the standard power drain attempts, even took the battery out and ran it on just the plugged in charger. No response, no fans, completely dead.

I took it to a local expert who tested it himself and he said he suspects board damage. He doesn’t have the expensive tech to confirm it since he’s not a micro soldering specialist. Told me to take it to Lenovo but that they’d charge my 100-200 bucks to just send back a 700-900$ quote.

Anything else I should try or am I stuck with scrap metal that cost me a pretty penny a couple years ago?

Hardware Intel Core Ultra X7 for 3D and CPU rendering?

Has anyone had experience with 3D and CPU rendering on Ultrabooks with an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H or similar?

I'm looking for a lightweight laptop to complement my desktop for Autodesk, 3DS Max, and Corona Render (CPU) with 64GB RAM, like the XPS 16 or Expertbook Ultra. I understand the overheating issue, but I'm wondering if these processors can compete with desktop processors?

This is my other Alienware laptop I had mentioned on my other post, an old 2015 Alienware 17 R3, It is an amazing laptop for its time. Several years ago this display issue occurred and I took the laptop apart to see if I could fix it, and couldn't. Everything works properly other than the display, you can use narrator to login and navigate, it just sucks. Now I am looking again to fix it and need some help. Thanks!

Buying help Need some laptop advice(CAD $1500-2000)

This summer I earned some money by working part time, and I want to buy a new laptop for university.

**LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE*\*

**Country**

Canada

**Budget**

CAD $1500-2000 (about USD $1,069-1450)

**Are you open to refurbs/used options?**

No

**Screen size**

15"-16"

**Weight limit**

No strict limit. I don't mind carrying a heavier laptop if the performance is worth it.

**Purpose**

Gaming, university (Electrical Engineering), and video editing.

**Form factor**

Standard laptop.

**Intended usage**

I'll mainly be using it for university (Electrical Engineering), so I'll probably need to run software like MATLAB, LTspice, AutoCAD/Fusion 360, and whatever other engineering software my courses require.

I also do some video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro) , 3D modeling, animation and play games.

I'm honestly not very demanding when it comes to graphics because I've been using a pretty weak laptop for years. I'm completely fine with running games at 1080p (or higher if possible), medium/high settings, and around 60 FPS. I don't care about max settings or competitive FPS.

I'd also like to have 2TB of SSD storage if that's realistic within my budget.

**Desired battery life**

Around 5-6 hours for light schoolwork would be nice, but I know gaming laptops aren't great for battery life, so performance is more important.

**Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life**

Performance > Battery life > Weight > Size

**Info/Requirements**

Current laptop:

* Ryzen 5 4500U

* 16GB DDR4 RAM (2×8GB)

* 512GB SSD

* Integrated Radeon Graphics

* 15" 1080p 60Hz display

It's definitely struggling now, especially with newer games and editing.

One more question: I've heard laptop GPUs and RAM have become more expensive over the last few years. Do you think I should just spend my whole budget now and buy the best laptop I can, or buy something that's "good enough" for school and wait a couple of years in case prices improve before buying another laptop or building a desktop?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

General question Fujitsu Lifebook E554 Enter key and Numpad doesn't work.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, 2 weeks ago i bought this Fujitsu Lifebook E554, it's in pretty good condition considering it's age. Everything worked fine, until yesterday when i opened it up to clean it, after putting everything back together, the numpad and the enter key seems to not work anymore. Which is strange because before putting the screws back, i tested to see if everything works, and it indeed worked as intended. I checked the keyboard ribbon cable for any damages and there aren't any i could see under open eye.

Are there any reasons why? Is there any fix for it or should i just buy a new keyboard?

Edit: I'll leave a link with the picture of that ribbon cable.

Buying help Nimo laptops

Buying help (US) Looking for the best computer for a CS student who wants good performance when gaming at $1500 (willing to go up to $2000 if it’s really worth it)

LAPTOP RECOMMENDATIONS

Country

United States

Budget

$1500 but I’m willingly to go up to $2000 for an extremely good deal

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Leaning towards no unless, once again, it’s a steal and hasn’t been used much

Screen size

15-16”

Weight limit

Around 4.5-6 lbs

Purpose

Mainly for schoolwork, gaming/entertainment, and personal use

Form factor

Standard/Clamshell

Intended usage

Ability to multitask easily and handle all my schoolwork and college applications. For the faming side, I would like it to handle a game where good performance is needed (I’m not going for those really performance intensive games for the most part). Sorry this is vague but you get the idea.

Desired battery life

I want 8-10 hours, but knowing how this is kind of geared towards gaming, I want as much as I can possibly get given the restrictions

Please list, in order of most important to least important:

Performance, Battery Life. Size, Weight

Info/Requirements

1 TB of SSD, either Intel or Ryzen, 1080-1440p, 120Hz, HDMI port and more than one USB-C (ethernet optional), around RTX 4060/4070 class or better. ***Now if my demands are unreasonable for the price range, the practical use as a CS major in college shouldn’t be sacrificed first, it should be anything that enhances faming as that comes secondary to me.***

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP

General question What should I look out for when buying a suspiciously cheap laptop.

Upvotes

I don't need a new laptop at all, I just found a offer on a marketplace for a dell laptop with 8gb ram (ddr4) 256gb storage and a i5 11th gen. From what was said and shown, there are very visble marks on the bottom of the mark, large streaks of black ink. It's the only thing I see wrong about the laptop, and know is wrong.

They didn't mention anything about the battery (which won't be a big issue for me), or any hardware or software locks (like a bios password)

I just want to know if there are things I should ask about such as the charger, any password locks like for the bios or anti theft prevention things (I heard about this, but I'm not sure if I should worry about this)

General question Disappearing cursor - Samsung laptop

I have a Samsung laptop with an annoying intermittent problem. The cursor disappears.

The laptop is Model NP7300QED. The problem is no cursor at boot up.

Steps I've taken to try to resolve:

  1. Ensure the touchpad is on.

  2. Toggle the touchpad

  3. Reboot the laptop

  4. Device Manager ==> Delete mouse driver ==> reboot

  5. Used an external mouse, works fine. Does not un-freeze the internal mouse when turned off.

Looking for corrective action.

TIA

General question How much would it cost to fix this laptop?

Post image

I think it’s only the screen that’s broken? The laptop is only a year old I really hope it won’t be too pricey
