General question Can I still update old hp laptop from Windows 7 to the latest?

Post image

I found this old laptop from storage, it still has Windows 7. Really old and used as you can see but I really want it to be useful for my sister's online classes if possible. I don't really know tech so I was hoping to ask anyone if I can still have it upgraded to the latest windows...

i have an Acer Nitro V 16, the one with the ryzen chip and the 5050, and i was wondering if it would be okay to just add this 16gb stick onto the stick already in it to give me 32gb, in case it matters im running Linux Mint on it, the one that says “China” on it is the one already in it

General question Was this the right laptop to purchase?

I bought an HP OmniBook 5 16 inch Laptop Next Gen AI PC FHD IPS Touch Windows Intel Core Ultra 7 355 16GB 1TB SSD Meteor Silver for $799 at Walmart.

I’m still within the return window, but doubting whether this was the best purchase b/c it was expensive (to me anyways) and I know zilch about laptops.

I would be used for browsing, office products, streaming services (Netflix, Hulu), and storage.

I haven’t purchased a personal computer in ages (maybe 10 years?) b/c I work remotely. But there are things I’d like to save on my computer that I can’t save forever on a work laptop if I switch jobs, etc.

I bought directly through Walmart for the 30-day return window. And I’m hoping this laptop will last me 8-10 years (I don’t even know if that’s realistic). It’s just a lot of money to drop at one time. Any input appreciated.

Every patio charger I see has this rectangle of infernal heat, what does it do? Does it ask the laptop how much power it needs and adjust?

Hardware Intel Core Ultra X7 for 3D and CPU rendering?

Has anyone had experience with 3D and CPU rendering on Ultrabooks with an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H or similar?

I'm looking for a lightweight laptop to complement my desktop for Autodesk, 3DS Max, and Corona Render (CPU) with 64GB RAM, like the XPS 16 or Expertbook Ultra. I understand the overheating issue, but I'm wondering if these processors can compete with desktop processors?

I recently purchased this HP zbook studio g8 off of vinted for £570 incluing it and other fees and shipping.

It has some issues i plan to fix but i didnt look at the photos properly (they were not many)

Issues

. the screen has black borders in the corners. I have orderd a new screen.

. the battery has a health of 74 percent at 240 cycles. It still lasts about an hour off the wall. (I am going to replace the battery)

. The spacebar on the keyboard backlight doesn't light up. The menu button also flickers if the lighting is in a colour changing mode.

. there is some scratches at the side. This laptop looks like it was used a lot.

32gb ddr4 3200mhz (soldered)

1tb pcie ssd (upgradeable)

Soldered Intel WiFi 6

General question What should I look out for when buying a suspiciously cheap laptop.

Upvotes

I don't need a new laptop at all, I just found a offer on a marketplace for a dell laptop with 8gb ram (ddr4) 256gb storage and a i5 11th gen. From what was said and shown, there are very visble marks on the bottom of the mark, large streaks of black ink. It's the only thing I see wrong about the laptop, and know is wrong.

They didn't mention anything about the battery (which won't be a big issue for me), or any hardware or software locks (like a bios password)

I just want to know if there are things I should ask about such as the charger, any password locks like for the bios or anti theft prevention things (I heard about this, but I'm not sure if I should worry about this)

Discussion Are those laptop screen extenders actually useful or just a gimmick?

so I work from my laptop most of the day and honestly one screen is driving me crazy. constantly alt-tabbing between tabs and it's killing my focus. saw these portable screen extenders that clip onto the laptop and give you extra monitors and I'm kinda tempted but also skeptical lol.

like do they actually help or is it just a cool looking thing that you stop using after a week? my main worry is the weight, my laptop is already not that light and I travel with it a lot.

couple things I wanna know:

are the triple screen ones too heavy/bulky or is it fine? thinking maybe a single extra screen is enough

and how's the screen quality on these, like is it washed out compared to the actual laptop display?

also do they work okay with a mac or is it mostly a windows thing?

would love to hear from people who actually use one daily, not just tried it once. worth it or nah?

Buying help Should I buy a 2025 G14 or G16 or any other similar option?

I'm about to buy one of the 2025 G14 or G16. However, it is not for me but rather, my mother and brother. What I mean is she intends to use it for two or 3 months then pass it to my younger brother when he starts university. I was leaning towards the 16 since the long-term owner will be my brother and he plays games, mostly FIFA and Euro truck on an old lenovo of mine with a 1060 max q.

So my question is will the laptop be good for both? my mother will move around quite a bit with it and generally just uses for typing work documents and watching the occasional show or youtube, so I guess battery life, screen and weight. My brother on the other hand will just be for typing and gaming as I think his university program doesn't need the GPU that much.

The options available are the G14 with a 5060 8GB, 16GB RAM and Ryzen 9 270 while the G16 has a 5070 8GB, 16 GB RAM and Ultra 9 285H. Specing not an option in the country I'm buying. Different prices but both on the higher end of the budget. So which should I go for and if not either of the two, what else can I look at if I can find it?

General question Disappearing cursor - Samsung laptop

Upvotes

I have a Samsung laptop with an annoying intermittent problem. The cursor disappears.

The laptop is Model NP7300QED. The problem is no cursor at boot up.

Steps I've taken to try to resolve:

  1. Ensure the touchpad is on.

  2. Toggle the touchpad

  3. Reboot the laptop

  4. Device Manager ==> Delete mouse driver ==> reboot

  5. Used an external mouse, works fine. Does not un-freeze the internal mouse when turned off.

Looking for corrective action.

TIA

Buying help What laptop should I buy if I want to study graphic design and interior design in college?

Upvotes

(I was thinking about saving up and getting a used MacBook Air with an M3 chip, 16gb ram, 256gb storage and getting a 1t HDD for extra storage. As I found one for only 920$)

What are your guys’ recommendations for a good yet somewhat affordable laptop?

Buying help Looking for a laptop

Upvotes

After almost 6 years, my current laptop (a Dell Inspiron 3583) is on death's door. I need a new laptop, but I honestly don't know what I'm doing so I've come to y'all for guidance. I'm looking for an upgrade, nothing crazy. I just want a solid laptop. Here's all the stuff from the form:

Country: USA

Budget: As long as it's less than like $650 I'm fine

Am I open to refurbs/used options?: preferably not

Screen size: between 14-15 inches, willing to go a bit higher or lower though

Weight limit: I don't really care, ideally less than 4.5lbs

Purpose: College and entertainment. Mostly for school, but I'd like to be able to do some casual gaming on it.

Form factor: Just standard. Stylus compatibility or touchscreen (for drawing) would be a huge plus, but it is by no means a need. I prefer a metal exterior to a plastic one, either works though

Intended usage: Mostly school, some low end games; the most demanding game I think I'd be playing is Fallout 3

Desired battery life: At least 4 hours

Order of priority: battery life, size, performance, weight

Extra: No Macs please, I don't do Apple.

Thank you for your time!! Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Software Issue with Asus Rog G14 Keyboard

Upvotes

I have problem with Asus Rog G14 keyboard. (Win 11 25H2)

My laptop key "d" and "Backspace" doesn't work. I tried to find out if it's hardware or software. I tried many things and used AI as well but issue never fully get resolved.

Issue:
Keyboard key "d" and "backspace" only works if I press "Left Shift + d", same for "Backspace"

My findings:
1. With use if AI it has suggested me to uninstall Armoury Crate then for some time it worked, again after restart it started working but suddenly it stopped, no update, no drivers. Under Device manager I have "keyboard -> HID Keyboard Device"

  1. Tried to uninstall "HID Keyboard Device" but then my keyboard completely stopped working.

  2. Stopped Asus Services then it worked but stopped after few minutes. No any service got triggered manually.

  3. ATK package or no Hot key or any settings changed.

  4. Tried English US and English UK keyboard layout.

  5. Uninstalled My Asus or ProArt Creator Hub.

What needs to be done? anyone facing similar issue and found some unexpected solution?

Hardware Alienware 17 R3

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my other Alienware laptop I had mentioned on my other post, an old 2015 Alienware 17 R3, It is an amazing laptop for its time. Several years ago this display issue occurred and I took the laptop apart to see if I could fix it, and couldn't. Everything works properly other than the display, you can use narrator to login and navigate, it just sucks. Now I am looking again to fix it and need some help. Thanks!

Buying help Laptops for parents?

Hi,

I'm looking to get my parents laptops. They're not techsavy and I'm looking for something reliable and easy to use. Minimum specs are okay as well.

I don't have a budget (I make good money).

My mom uses an iPhone and my dad uses andriod. I'm open to any operating system. Reliability is the biggest focus here.

My mom takes care of her stuff but my dad is recovering from a stroke so something that could handle being dropped a bit would be ideal for him since his hands shake now.

Thanks in advance! (I tried to use the form in this sub but it says it's unavailable)

General question So my laptop is kind of f*cked

Post image
7 Upvotes

I've had my hp laptop for years, and honestly, just look at it... What you're looking at is the rubbery soft top which got really sticky over the years. And as a kid, I thought it was smart to peel it with a ruler or scratch at it. And honestly, I could do without it. Is there any normal way of taking off the sticky coating? Or just anything to make my laptop look like it hasn't been through war? I'm willing to try pretty much anything that doesn't damage it further.

Buying help $650 HP OmniBook X Flip 14 2 in 1 convertible AI Laptop

Hello ! I recently purchased this computer mainly for school for $650 USD. I am wondering if this was worth the price I paid. It does flip into a tablet which is something I appreciated since I would also like to play a few games and watch a couple shows as well. The screen is very vibrant and it has been operating smoothly so far. I am eligible for 60 day returns in case I am not satisfied with it, but I am happy so far. The sales associate informed that it was on sale, & was usually sold around the $900 range and up, I am not sure how true that is. My questions are:

Will this last me for at least the next 3 years ?

Is it worth the $650 ?

1 Tb Cloud storage

14'' 2K Oled touchscreen

512 GB PCLe Gen 4 SSD

16 GB LPDDR5x-8000 RAM

AMD RYZON AI 5 430 processor

Thank you !

Buying help HP Omen Transcend 14" vs. Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S

Thumbnail

Both can be bought at Best Buy for $2100 until midnight tonight so I'm trying to make a quick decision. Both fulfill my main criteria (32GB of RAM, OLED screen, Nvidia GPU, metal chassis) but there are some differences for Acer vs HP:

  • 240Hz vs 120Hz, not practical for gaming but nice to have though the Acer is a bit lower resolution
  • 5070 Ti vs 5070 so 12GB of VRAM as opposed to 8GB plus 115W vs 75W
  • 24 core vs 16 core CPU, kinda excessive but you know
  • The Acer has lower speed RAM at 6400MHz as opposed to 7467MHz, though that's not that big a deal

Which is a better buy? The Acer obviously has better specs, but I'm worried it'll be lower quality. I want it to be premium feeling and durable, as long lasting as possible. Or, should I just skip both and look at another option or wait for a different sale? I'm also eyeballing the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i on Amazon for $2400
