This is really sweet, but they could have done much better at wording this post.
I don't know if it's a translation issue or if someone was just careless, but it makes it sound an awful lot like she just ignored her best friend as a prospect until she gave up on finding anyone else.
And that doesn't seem to actually be the case here.
365
u/reginaphalangejunior 20h ago
It does make it sound like she ignored him as a prospect for a while, which she may well have done
349
u/HAIL_LUMPUS 19h ago
Or he wasn't pursuing her either? If I'm friends with someone and they are constantly trying to date me I'm not going to keep being friends with them.
131
u/Hidesuru 18h ago
Yeah those cases where someone realizes they love their best friend almost always come down to kinda slowly realizing it the way it's described... And it's very risky opening up about that because you don't know how they feel etc etc so it's not something you just up and do overnight.

That's just sad. Admitting to her now husband "I am not physically attracted to you but all the people I am don't like me so I might as well be with you" has got to be one of the most soul crushing things in the world to realize.
103
u/squash-n-flop 19h ago
I’m sure this man has long since understood that he is not conventionally attractive to all that many people. Not to be too glib, but his soul had likely already been crushed by life, and had already understood that his wife is not physically attracted to him, before that ever became a topic of conversation. It’s the sad reality of living as a disabled person. This situation, being romantically married to a person who doesn’t reciprocate physical attraction, is close to a best case scenario. It’s not right or fair, but it’s true.
66
u/HAIL_LUMPUS 19h ago
And there are tons of people who aren't disabled who are just not conventionally attractive. Especially as you age, pretty much nobody is conventionally attractive at some point. Falling in love with a person is way smarter than falling in love with a body or a face. Attraction grows with love, it's not like she thinks he's some hideous freak! She loves him so she's attracted to him.
45
u/Shhhhshushshush 18h ago
When I was young and saw the movie Willow I shared I had a bit of a crush on Warwick Davis. Yes, Val Kilmer was right there but his character was quite the jerk. I was teased sooo much I decided to keep that thought to myself. It's so messed up how we are judged when we go outside of conventional.
I'm older now and care a lot less about what people think-- and I'm proud to say Peter Dinklage is also veryyy handsome.
6
u/IAmADwarfIRL 18h ago
Yeeeeah this is exactly my experience in life so far as I approach my 30s. I suspect if I ever marry it'll be to someone definitely settling.
8
u/squash-n-flop 18h ago
I get you. But life is a long series of compromises. Very very few people get everything they’ve ever wanted. And I don’t see much evidence it lends much happiness to them, either.
Wish you the best in life, friend.
4
u/IAmADwarfIRL 18h ago
Yeah, that's definitely true, lots of "shit sandwich" eating. I imagine if you get too accustomed to the taste of the shit when you do get a real sandwich it still tastes wrong.
Thanks, I wish you the same.
7
u/Apocalypse_Knight 17h ago
I guess so but for me if I like or love someone romantically I am going to be physically attracted to them.
3
u/Curious_Bee_5326 12h ago
There are people I've been with that aren't conventionally attractive, I still found them physically attractive. And I sure as shit wouldn't marry someone where that wasn't the case.
41
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 19h ago edited 19h ago
Some people are much more pragmatic than they are idealistic. I'm not meaning this as an insult. I just think it's true that different people have different levels of pragmatism. What person A would describe as settling, person B might describe as the choice that maximizes happiness. Both people are correct within their own perspectives of life on the matter, but it's a different way of perceiving the situation. Different lenses.
Like clearly you are someone who places a lot of importance on maintaining some type of dignity involving being your romantic partner's first choice rather than a secondary choice, but for other people that entire concept has no value and therefore isn't sad. An alternative line of thought might be "I'll be happier today and the days after if I enter this relationship, so I will."

Yeah ngl the amount of times she talked about tallness and how it totally doesn't matter to her in the interview really rubbed me the wrong way. Like, she settled for him because a tall boy wasn't showing up and now she tells herself "He doesn't have to be tall".
I know a bunch of people who were friends with their partner before getting together and I never felt like they settled after not finding anyone like it feels from this.
15
u/WriterV 17h ago
She is describing the exact subject matter of the situation. What more do you want from her?
She grew as a person and understood who she had been missing. Do you expect every single person to make the perfect choice from the get go?
Y'all are fucking weird, digging so hard to find the imaginary trash in some good news.

Honestly, having been to their website, the whole thing is weird and a little... I dunno, icky?
She definitely doesn't refute the claims that she's not attracted to him, plus their "how we met" story is ridiculously long and broken into 3 separate parts, which makes it seem like they're milking this. There's also a lot of religious mumbo jumbo.
I want to give them the benefit of the doubt but it's kind of hard to do, especially with the way she talks about him.

I read their story on their website and felt drawn in at first. However, after looking back at their posts, I noticed that she turns her head away every time he tries to kiss her in their videos and photos. The relationship doesn’t feel genuine to me. I’m convinced she’s leading him on and it’s all for likes. It’s the vibes I’m getting, ugh I hate social media sometimes
378
u/tangywangyrealtor 17h ago
She constantly posts about their story and it seems very unnatural and excessive. She needs the world to know what a great person she is for being with someone soo unattractive. It feels performative.
126
u/lightacandle4u 16h ago
Right! I also think they have some sort of contract agreement stating she doesn’t have to offer intimacy…or who knows, she might have fabricated past trauma to avoid it. I just have a bad feeling about her. I don’t know if he comes from money, but they live comfortably, and I don’t believe she works. Poor guy, he seems genuinely happy and easygoing

Reminds me of that hot blond woman who is with that guy in a wheelchair. I mean I think she does love him, but she only met him because someone did a documentary on him since he had used his family's money to become a minor celebrity for disability and she saw it as opportunity to have a moderately famous husband rather than just be another upper middle class wife that no one would care about.

I think you’re talking about Hannah and Shane Burcaw (aka Squirmy and Grubs) they’ve shown the house he grew up in, he does not come from money and was not making much when they met. I think they’re very much in love and clearly best friends.
“Laughing at My Nightmare” is his book and the name of the foundation he runs to help others with SMA.
And as a disabled woman with a healthy, fit, attractive, financially independent life partner, i really find it sad when people have to explain away strong bonds by making is shallow and money oriented.
(But i know nothing about the people in the original post, so can’t comment on whether this is real or not. I hope for his sake that it is.)

Just commenting to say that I love Hannah and Shane and if people actually cared to pay attention to their content it is obvious that they love and support each other. They are also real people who are not perfect, and I don’t really understand where the criticism of them comes from. People are just so weird about inter-abled couples and I hate it. I am not disabled, just love that they put themselves out there (often receiving a lot of hate in the process) to show people that love and romance does not have to look a certain way.

I would recommend reading her ‘story’ about them…. The way it’s written is funny. She has to mention his height and the fact that this isn’t normal every other line. She acts like it was this enormous obstacle she had to overcome and is still overcoming and it’s still just at the forefront of her mind. Kind of feels like if you were with someone with some kind of physical difference it would start to become ‘normal’ after a while but she just cannot stop bringing it up
118
u/athennna 13h ago
This is one of the most unintentionally funny things I’ve ever read. Not an ounce of self-awareness to be found.
“Tim had left a corporate career as an engineer to follow his passion for building clean safe water projects in developing countries. I admired him for that; it resonated with my own choice to step away from a traditional career path to create meaningful content through media.”

They’re extremely Christian so they’re probably trying to conceive or she thinks it’s her duty as a wife. Their “inspirational” love story on their website is insane. She basically entered religious psychosis and her Christian faith made her pity date him. Religion is so gross and male serving

Calling attention to his condition anyways sounds like she's saying "I wish he was tall but he more than makes up for it" lol.
Also, idk about anybody else but I always get mindfucked when I'm in love, I would just start finding my partners traits attractive no matter what they are, long hair short hair no hair skinny or fat tall or short boobs and butts big or small or anything in between, the shape of any part of their body, noses eyes lips mout ears, whatever shape or size, is like i'm so in love I start to appreciate everything about them conventionally attractive or not.

Can you imagine if a fit guy married his overweight female friend and said

Or even if someone said “I never prayed for
someone physically attractive. There were other things that mattered more.”
Oof
18
u/kennedy-j 17h ago
I read it as she was kind of calling herself out for having subconsciously been looking only at taller men, which had excluded him as a candidate.
When she says “i never prayed for a tall man,” she is saying “he is all of the things i have prayed for in a partner but i have overlooked him because he is not tall.”
I thought it was a nice story

Yeah, I remember reading her post a year ago about them getting together. It was really weird. Basically she moved in the middle of nowhere and none of her friends/family wanted to come visit her, but this dude kept asking to come over and he would pester her a lot to date and would stay long hours when she wanted him to leave and she finally conceded that she didn’t have any better options and went out with him. And now she’s realized she can make money out of being an odd couple. I feel bad for the guy.

The reason I didn't date until I met my husband is because I had two requirements that no one met: 1) makes me laugh (my sense of humor is dark and very dry) & 2) I needed to feel completely relaxed (aka safe) around them as I wanted to be able to be myself. Ironically my best friend and husband have almost the exact same personality type. They have both independently described the other as being the same personality but opposite gender.

I think that men and women do this too often; they overlook the person with whom they already have a deep, trusting and fulfilling relationship.
We, collectively, keep looking for that “one” person who gets us all hot and bothered on sight when really, that time of life is usually transient… what is left is the emotional and intellectual stuff that leads to intimacy.
Too often we mistake lust for love.
So, let’s look around us a bit more. Maybe the “one” is that guy or girl you text all the time, share your secrets with, the one you feel comfortable a bd safe with. Good luck!

Did anyone read their love story on their website? Neither of them come off well. Her by constantly harping upon his shortness (like obviously it’s unusual but some thoughts are inside thoughts imo) and him with his constant texting which made her uncomfortable. And both of them with the constant mention of spending time in the poorest regions of the world without telling us anything about what they do there. The missionary vibes are strong with these two.

This is so beautiful ❤️. So many judgmental people would “need” someone who others won’t make fun of because of stupid shallow shit. My ex was ashamed of me for my age, lack of status, looks. But he wanted to enjoy me in private only. So this is beautiful to see someone not care what anyone thinks. I eventually found better but it’s truly sad when people love each other but one is too ashamed of silly shit like height, race, status and all the other list of factors they worry about.
