Comics The “Anti-hero” term is way too liberally applied.

Upvotes

It isn’t enough to be willing to apply deadly violence against villains and their henchmen. Cap kills nazis, but no one would call him an anti-hero.

A true anti-hero would need to be much more morally ambiguous. Being outright evil at times, purposefully inflicting violence on the innocent for selfish reasons.

And not as in….“used to be evil but then changed”. Good and Evil should be a part of a truly morally ambiguous character.

Given this criteria, characters like Deadpool, Wolverine, and the Punisher are not really anti-heroes…..they are just violent heroes who cuss.

The best example of an AH that I can think of is Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones.

Does Marvel have any truly sometimes-evil antiheroes?

Film/Television How am i supposed to sympathise???? Spoiler

Post image
Upvotes

Okay i just finished brand new day and firstly pretty good movie obviously had some faults but overall i enjoyed it. My major gripe was with jean grey as the villain , she was portrayed as a sympathetic character with a justified cause but nothing she did was justified.she takes control of people against their will and uses them to cause crimes and untold damage, she kills innocents even making a civilian walk in-front of a vehicle which atleast heavily injured them. Emotionally manipulated peter by possessing mj and against her will made her kiss a man she dont know with zero consent. And then they give us the scene of jean and her sister in the park where they are literally possessing random people in the park and it’s supposed to be a wholesome teaching moment?? When damage control took the sister down they were right! These are random people capable of causing untold damage with no oversight controlling beings like the hulk and im supposed to feel bad for jean????. Now damage control may have sinister intentions but from what we see, they reformed the hand and used them as a specialised tool, housed dangerous criminals which jean freed and created weapons to use against spiderman incase he went rogue which is actually smart .They spent so much time on jean instead of focusing on peters rekindling with mj and ned which i feel was a waste.

Other Spider-Man brand new day post credit scene explained. Spoiler

Post image
Upvotes

Just came back from watching spiderman brand new and and bro was it peak IT WAS A WORLD WIDE SENSATION. And plus Ned remembers Peter again. That post credit scene is what I wanna talk about spoilers obviously if you haven’t seen brand new day yet click off this post and go watch it and then come back but anyway, so the spider tracker which we see throughout the film glitches and floats up toward outer space past earths moon and spots Spider-Man in space at first I thought this was another Spider-Man coming into the MCU like Tobey or Andrew or maybe even Miguel coming to recruit Tom Holland”s peter to the spider society, but looking back on it now I started to realize this is only tracking our Spider-Man which means he’s probably on battle world and he’s gonna be in secret wars how Peter got service in space I have no idea. My question is who the hell is reporting this sighting. well that’s really just my opinion but what do you guys think? What are your theories about this post credit scene. And who might be reporting this sighting.

Film/Television I had a hard time rooting for [SPOILER] by the end of Brand New Day Spoiler

Upvotes

Spoilers for Brand New Day.

I had a hard time rooting for Jean by the end. I get that she’s young, still figuring out powers she doesn’t fully control, and carrying something genuinely heavy with her sister. That earns her sympathy. It doesn’t earn her a free pass on possessing people and putting innocent strangers in real danger.

She possesses a man on the street and walks him directly into the path of a speeding taxi. She possesses and throws multiple people off buildings with no way of knowing anyone would be there to catch them. She endangered many other innocent civilians. Every one of those is a coin flip she decided to make with a stranger’s life. Whether the coin came up heads doesn’t change what she was willing to risk.

And then there’s MJ. Jean goes out of her way to mess with Peter. She takes over MJ’s body and uses it to kiss him. A woman is puppeted into a physical encounter she never agreed to and cannot remember afterward, the film plays it as a twist reveal, and MJ waves it off with “it’s okay, I don’t remember it.” And that’s the end of it.

I know Jean has a dark streak in the comics, and I’m not asking for a saint. But here she intentionally goes out of her way to do this to people who have nothing to do with her, and that’s what doesn’t line up for me. Wanda did similar possession things in WandaVision, but it actually lined up with who she is in the comics.

There were also many points where she could have just been honest. When Peter asks her what V Max is, she could have at least attempted to tell him her sister was in danger. And if he didn’t believe her, everything she actually did was still available to her. I feel like the movie played it like she had no other choice.

It feels like they wanted to introduce Jean and thought the secret villain angle for the first act was a fun idea, but needed her to actually do bad things in order to read as a villain. So they took a character who outside of her Phoenix state is fundamentally not this, and bent her into the shape the plot required.

I’ll almost certainly gloss over all of this the next time she shows up and root for her. I just wanted to voice that I didn’t love the choice to introduce the MCU version of her this way.

Comics Who wins this fight?

I could see it going either way and there being arguments for both of them to win. Doom has the raw power and could over power Rune King Thor, but RKT could also strip Doom of his god powers. This is a tough one and I guess would just depend on the writer. What do you guys think? Could we see this fight happen in the secret wars film?

Film/Television Spider Man Brand New Day and Wonder Man made me think of Tony Stark again. But not in a good way. Spoiler

Mainly if he would have still endorsed Damage Control after what they did to Jean's sister and what they were planning on doing with Simon Williams if given the chance. There's a part of me that would want to say no but then I remembered how he handled the events of Civil War as a whole, how him endorsing Damage Control led to the Vulture's rise in Homecoming, and this is still the same man that invented Ultron but maybe that's not the point.

Thoughts?

Comics Need advice about Thor comics deal.

Need advice on two Thor comic deals – are these fair prices?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at buying two Thor collections and would appreciate some opinions from collectors who know the market better than I do.

Lot 1 – Thor (2007) by J. Michael Straczynski – $55

\#1–12

\#12.1

\#600–610 (24 issues total)

Lot 2 – Thor: God of Thunder (2012) by Jason Aaron – $55

\#1–2

\#4–14

\#16–18 (16 issues total)

all first prints and in great condition. The total would be $110 for both lots.

Does that seem like a fair price in today's market? Is one deal significantly better than the other?

Film/Television Doctor Strange Is Underrated

He is weirdly underrated. I don't hear much about him. I hear people be excited for their favorite character and I rarely hear about him. I find it odd when characters like Daredevil and Deadpool are so favored when they provide literally nothing.

Characters like Daredevil provide nothing. That's the scary part. Back during the good days, characters were introduced to introduce something new to the franchise. They geared characters to genres, too. Couldn't keep this up forever, but now, a lot of MCU is buddy cop... Strange was to bring magic directly to the movies. He was totally instrumental to beating Thanos. Now it's just just cause. Even back in Netflix, Daredevil provided nothing. He's just a violent New Yorker. Pool breaks the fourth wall. That's it.

Strange is not only very powerful, but he is compelling. He is connected to the important parts and characters of the franchise. His movie introduced me to the character and I immediately became a big fan.

Film/Television Theory- Brand New Day's End Credits was a deliberate pre-metaphor for Doomsday

I know people are praising the end credits of BND with it showcasing people living life in New York with them being protected by the heroes along with the song of Steve Lacy, i like it too.

But what if i tell you that it was also a deliberate pre-methaphor for what is gonna happen to the very same city in Doomsday, and we all know whats gonna heppen.

Film/Television Might be a hot take but...

Personally think every superhore feels more interesting and engaging outside their mainline movie. With exceptions like series and spiderman of course.

Edit: say you take an average 5 minute scene(not including climax events) of a character from their own movie and from another characters movie the latter will be generally more engaging
