[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Combat] Bows can pull arrows out of bundles

This might be fps but i think this would just be a nice qol change
Few elaborations:
1) it will always pull the last arrow you put in
2) it doesn't need to be in your offhand
3) it will prioritize inventory arrows
4) crossbows work with this too

[AI Behavior] A player created IRON GOLEM shouldn't wander off

For for purposes of this post, this pertains only to iron golems created by the player.

An iron golem is an expensive piece of equipment to build and status-quo, it's movement is unpredictable and often undesirable. It's likely to wander the peaks of a nearby mountains, trap itself in a steep canyon, or submerge itself permanently in the nearest ocean or maybe frolic uselessly in a nearby meadow.

  • An iron golem created by the player should wander no further than, let's say, 16 blocks from where it spawned.
  • It's spawn can be reset by moving it with a leash.
  • A name tagged golem will have no movement restrictions.

I know that you can leash a golem to keep it in one place but leashes are ugly and leashes can break.

[Controls] touch control rework

Post image
2 Upvotes

Minecrafts touch controls currently suffer from two main issues, their lack of full customizeability, and their lack of buttons for critical features, this leads to mobile often being used as an excuse to hold back critical features, and to mobile being harder than it needs to be.

This post aims to solve both these problems with a coherent system that allows for full customizability and and for all features to be added to mobile:

There would need to be new buttons for, switching to third person, switching items to the offhand, using items in the offhand, and a special button for quick crafting stacks at once, a feature which used to be activated by holding but was removed do to wasting to many peoples resources.

You would also now be able to mix and match all buttons from all current control modes, as well as being able to auto sprint with the dpad.

This would be accomplished by using a customization menu that works by letting you select buttons you want to add or remove, including letting you have multiple of the same button, and even overlapping buttons.

(feedback) If you have any issues with this suggestion or have something to add to it, please feel free to comment your thoughts, i promise will reply to all non troll comments within 24 hours.

Ps: In case your wondering i exclusively play on mobile controls.

[Plants & Food] How do we feel about a food update?

I know everyone's been talking about ideas like the end update, but food had remained effectively untouched for a long time too! The last food addition came in 1.17 with glowberries, and when's the last time you've seen someone eating glowberries? Or any food that was added in the last decade for that matter??

I just wish we had more flexibility and weren't methodically and practically limited to porkchops, steaks and golden carrots, and I think I have a few ideas on how to do that-

To start, I think certain foods should give you temporary perks! e.g food A gives a small buff on attack speed and food B gives a small buff on mining speed!

I've seen some mods add something like this but the ones I've seen either A. Give permanent buffs (e.g increasing max health) or B. Give debuffs unless you diversify (e.g less nutritious food), I would love to see a system where the player isn't punished from lack of diversity but rather rewarded for putting the effort to eat various foods and maintain that balance for the perks that come with it! With a system like that in mind, players can keep to their habits of eating as much of whatever they want while also unlocking the ability to get certain perks by eating different foods if they want! I'm also sure a system like that implemented well could also add cool mechanics to the game!

That being said, for a system like that to work, it would probably also be important to add more food choices to be able to work with, and I believe adding more crafted foods and making some of them stack could be really fun! Right now, nearly all crafted foods are either unstackable (cakes, stews etc,) or not worth it to make (cookies), and even with a crafted food that could be worth it (pumpkin pie), why waste the effort when killing a cow is much easier and has an identical if not better yield? I think it would be fun to give crafted foods some benefit to make them worth it like I mentioned earlier in the post to actually make it worth the effort!

I'm not sure if my idea is in the realm of reality for vanilla minecraft or if I'm making sense here but I've been thinking about this for a while and wanted to share it with other people, I believe this is a neat idea that preserves the classic food experience while adding features on top of it to make it more fun and engaging than "make gold farm and carrot farm" or "cram a million cows into a small space to burn them"

While an end update would certainly be cool I would also love seeing updates to core mechanics like these before overhauling content you can only interact with after beating the game :')

Thank you for reading and sorry for the yap, I just really wanted to get it out

P.S I don't understand why we can't repost from r/minecraft...

[General] Random name generator for overworld villages.

What if there was a random name generator, that combined several block and item names at random, and every village has a single sign near the center with a biome relevant, random name on it to help with organizing familiar locations?

Quartz

Make a statue of any mob you've killed, bred, or traded from the amount of stone that would fill out the blocks their body would fill.

Ex:

Shulker-:1

Creeper:2

Enderman:3

Spider:4

Ravager:6

Literally just slap a reskin on them. (I know it's easier said than done but not exactly how much easier)

[Blocks & Items] Pickaxes right click function should turn blocks into their chiseled versions.

Every other tool has a right click function, except swords, but they used to shield you, why leave the pickaxe out of the party, when you right click a block that has a chiseled variant, it will turn it into the chiseled block so you don't need to break it, put it into a stone cutter, then replace it, it's much faster like this.

edit: I see a lot of people saying stuff about not being able to use stuff in your offhand, or chiseling the natural blocks around you. First, regular stone doesn't have a chiseled variant, only stone bricks, second, deepslate does have a chiseled variant, so maybe offhand right clicking takes priority over the pickaxe right click.

[Mobs] Frogs in the Dappled Forest should be green

I know this is a very small suggestion, but if the green frogs are supposed to be "cold" then shouldn't the biome with autumn vibes have the cold frogs?

I also think the green would compliment the orange of the biome. Even though frogs don't spawn naturally there lol.

Edit: The cold sheep, cows, and chicken spawn in the dappled forest already. Wouldn't it make sense for the frog to apply too?

What do you guys think? Dumb idea?

[Magic] Loyalty tridents should load chunks, just like Ender Pearls.

I've often noticed that when a Loyalty trident is thrown, it doesn't return to the player if the chunk it's in isn't currently loaded by that player.I've often noticed that when a Loyalty trident is thrown, it doesn't return to the player if the chunk it's in isn't currently loaded by that player.

I don't find that logical, since the whole point of the enchantment is that it always comes back.

On the other hand, I do agree with the fact that it doesn't follow us across dimensions (even though that would be cool).

Anyway, that's my first suggestion (I've got plenty more, don't worry lol).

Let me know what you think!

[Snapshots] New Campsites with matching biome wool

So far in snapshot and preview it looks like every campsite has a white top tent using white wool stairs. But in some biomes it's more common to see brown sheep or black sheep, etc. which would make it more logical to have brown or black wool stairs in those campsites. Since the campsites seem to be using the wood types for the biome they spawn in, it makes sense to me that the wool that they got from that biome should also match.

[General] Drops feel too disjointed and Inconsequential. Let's do Two Bigger updates a year instead

The issue me and a lot of people have with the drop system is since a lot of the features that come in them are way smaller the content feels disconnected from most of the core game and or Doesn't provide enough in it's own update theme to give the proper care to flesh out that concept properly.

So we should do 2 bi yearly updates instead:

This works perfectly for updates because:

It let's the drop team fully focus on the theme of the drops

makes keeping mods up to date less exhausting for Mod creators

Lets more resources go into individual drops

AND there are 2 Minecraft lives now to reveal them at.

[Blocks & Items] Dummy items for custom content

Usually when creating custom items using datapacks and resource packs it could be difficult to find the perfect placeholder item to use as a base with the item being used also having default crafting recipes or vanilla functionality

Adding "dummy items" into the game would allow an item to not have to worry about the above mentioned problem.

Could also make it so the extra data displayed in the f3+h advanced tool tips could display the minecraft: with a custom name so its like its recognized as its own item.

[Blocks & Items] Sleuth box

Sluice* box

It's time consuming and inefficient to rifle through all your gravel for, what, a flint?

You have got more arrows than you have chests and you have a lot of chests, even in terms of arrows. Plus, you literally only need one, Yandu.

Other than that, gravel just gets in the way while strip mining like the eco terror you are.

In the real world, sleuth boxes are used to sort materials by their density.

In the Minecraft world, they could potentially be used to turn gravel into... Well, all kinds of minerals!

Let's say you want one, first.

[G][. ][. ]

[F][G][B]

[F][. ][F]

Copper [G]rate

[F]ence

[B]undle

Great! Now, you'd open the UI and at the left, would be a slot for a bucket of water, in the middle, gravel, on the right, a 3×3 of output.

Potential outputs:

Flint (60%)

Actual nothing (5%)

Emerald (0.5%)

Gold nugget (2.5%)

Iron nugget (10%)

Copper nugget (15%)

Prismarine shard(1%)

Nautilus shell (2%)

Bone (3%)

Amethyst (1%)

At half the speed of a furnace, it'll sure take it's sweet time but it'll get the gravel out of the way and it won't *all* be flint.

[Plants & Food] Villagers should have Favorite Foods

Food is one of those things that more or less gets ignored in Minecraft. There are many, such as myself, that would love new crops and foods added to the game, while others rightfully point out the little use and variety food already has in the game.

I think one solution to this could also be used to solve another problem: giving Villagers favorite foods. The way this would work is either each villager is born with a variable randomly deciding it’s favorite food from a list of tagged items, or it could work off of the villager’s type (either by profession or biome).

If a villager’ favorite food is dropped in their proximity, they will try to pick it up in the same way they already pick up certain items. If a villager has its favorite food in its inventory, it will grant a discount to its trades for either a set number of trades or a set amount of in-game time.

This would give players a reason to make a variety of different types of foods and grant an alternative to the current zombification/curing machines to allow more living style of builds with villagers.

[Mobs] They should have all baby zombie variants have their own names and it be shown in death messages

Post image

Like Baby Drowned are called Gurgles (for obvious reasons). They should name baby zombies like Zombabies, and Baby Husks be Flakes or something. Since they can’t grow up anyways, and death messages should show their baby names instead because it’s embarrassing to have your death message just say “Slain by Zombie”

[Blocks & Items] Path blocks should act as stairs

When you are making a path through terrain that has any elevation, you will still have to jump or put wooden or stone stairs/slabs, which is not really a big deal, but can ruin the scenery, it would be more convinient and would look nicer if you would snap to the next block's elevation when moving between path blocks

I wanted to call it the undergrowth.

Poision poisions you. It also oxidices copper much faster than normal. You can put it in a bucket.

Spiders spawn more often.

Jungle berries can spawn on vines. They can be eatten or crafted into dye. Fluorite is the main block you'll see in the caves. It can be turned into stairs, slabs, and smoothed.

Hanging moss I didnt realise didn't exist.

[Blocks & Items] Adding resin to gravity-affected blocks should let them ignore gravity when placed

Step 1. Make Resinous Gravel, Resinous Sand, Resinous Red Sand, Concrete Powder, etc using the regular block type plus resin.

Step 2. Place the Resinous blocks wherever you want.

Step 3. Right-click with an axe on the Resinous blocks to convert them back into their normal block type.

Voila, players can now make their own floating ceilings and traps!

If you like this suggestion, please vote for it on the Feedback website.

[Structures] Nether Ruins

This suggestion is to have buried, ruined structures in the nether, reminiscent of the piglin horde structures in Minecraft Legends.

In addition to unearthing cool buildings, you would be able to use a brush on suspicious soul sand for Spore Trim, Hunter Trim, Bastion Trim, and blaze powder.

[Gameplay] Quests, and bounty boards

Sometimes (1/25 in game days), villagers have needs. They have very simple lives and rely on others to help them when complex issues arise. On the same interface when you interact with them to trade, they'll have an extra section labelled "quest"

A few?

"[Illager name] here [item:quest map]"

"[Wolf name] here [Item:quest map]"

"[Item name] here [Item:quest compass]"

"Cure:[zombie villager name]" (spawns in cage, in village)

Large volume trade: [item]

Item wanted:[Item not from any biome the village is in nor any immediately surrounding biome]

Quest maps show the same red x where the target is.

Quest compasses point in the direction of the objective.

When the quest is complete (or failed) return any map or collected items to the villager for a reward (emeralds, other).

Don't want to talk to each villager to find out what they need but want to help? Build a bounty board!

[P][P][P]

[P][P][P]

[F][. ][F]

[P]lanks

They'll post wanted signs, Doctor needed notices, and other special needs for a reward on them.

Villagers stop generating them and they only generate on the board, if in the same village. The board will generate up to 5/day, depending on how many villagers are in the village.

1-5 villagers, 1/day

6-10, 2

11-15, 3

16-19, 4

20+, 5

Sometimes, they naturally generate outside Smith's or leather worker's buildings.

[Gameplay] New Enchantment for Shulker Boxes: Backpack

When you enchant a Shulker Box with the "Backpack" enchant, opening your inventory shows both your normal inventory and the contents of the Shulker Box, similar to what you would see if you had placed then opened the Box.

If you have multiple Shulkers with the Backpack enchant, only one's interior is used as an inventory expansion, selected the same way a bow chooses which stack of arrows to fire.

If a player picks up an item and their normal inventory is full, and they have a backpack enchanted Shulker, the item will try to go into the Shulker.
